oh Dennis bless your heart with this one. have a tissue handy, James's dad had stage 4 kidney failure and they couldn't find a match. They didn't expect Blunt Senior to survive, James made this song as a tribute to his dad. Every shake and crack in his voice is real, he wouldn't let them use any auto-tune to correct it. Luckily after this video hit a distant cousin got tested and bless the lord was a match. He spent most of 2020 in quarantine and healing but he's doing fine now. My heart is breaking for you and I'm crying right along with you. You weren't ready for this video. Yes that was Blunt Sr

So thaaaat's what it's about! I donated a kidney to my dad about 7 years ago. His dr recently told him it's working about 50% better than the average guy his age without kidney probs. Hurrah!

Just to add, this was recorded exactly as you see it. One take with no 'Auto-Tune' James wanted this to be 100% real and authentic. This was the first time he'd sung it to his dad, who had only recently been diagnosed with stage 4 kidney cancer and was not expected to survive, although they did eventually fine a donor and he made it. Both James and his dad are former officers in the British military. I don't know how James managed to keep himself together so well, but it was so damn powerful and obviously deeply emotional for him.

After this song was released a distant cousin came forward was tested and found to be a match. The last I heard his father was doing well. They were both military men and the words were told by his farther the other way around when James was about to deploy... I'm not your farther your not my son we're just two men saying goodbye.

It's the emotive "it's my turn, to chase the monsters away". That gets me.
Not only makes it a full circle - life and death, but, emphasises the vulnerability of you as a kid, and your dad afraid of death. It's just sad, but a beautiful lyric.

his dad got diagnosed with terminal kidney failure. His sister wrote a poem about it. James took the poem and wrote a song saying goodbye to his dad. Real emotions for sure in this one.

I don't think anyone is ready for this one. It's hard hitting for many poeple. I've loved James Blunt for many years but this was a game changer. There are few men who can put so much emotion into a song. James was a captain in the British army. a tank cammander who served in Kosovo, and his father was a Colonel in the army & helicopter pilot. Another very moving song he made was about his time in Kosove, called No Bravery. I think many men would be able to respond to it. A little titbit for you : James effectively deflected WW3 by refusing to obey a command from higher up. A very brave man.

When I was slowly returning to ‘normal’ my one son played this song to me over and over. I’m slowly healing, I’ll never recover, and this song has become our anthem. Today my son walked into our home singing Monsters, everyone stopped, and that was my cue to join him, a great way to stat my day, I attended my rehab a new man!

This song of James Blunt’s, “Monsters” was a heartfelt tribute to his father. The emotional track reflects the deep bond between them and a touching farewell. In the music video for “Monsters,” James Blunt sings directly to the camera, his eyes welling up with tears...The video is so powerful because sitting beside James Blunt is his real-life dad, Colonel Charles Blount. who was a former cavalry officer, battling stage 4 chronic kidney disease. The song captures the raw emotions of facing mortality and saying the things one wants to say to a loved one before it’s too late 💗 I can never get through this, without crying..........real men do cry darling ❤

I actually feel a bit sorry for anyone who can watch this without shedding a tear. Either they’ve been schooled so rigorously not to show their feelings, that they’ve lost the ability to, or they’re broken. Obviously they’re are many people who didn’t have a good relationship with their father, but as humans we can all put ourselves in James’ position and it hurts!

I do not know why I keep watching reaction videos to this song. I have used at least half a large box of tissues in the process of torturing myself. I guess I find some kind of comfort in the tender hearted reactions of others since loosing my husband less than two months ago. This song resonates especially in those who have lost someone close to them. Even those who don't know the feeling are touched. Another song that gets to me is Joey and Roy's song When I'm Gone.
