James Father is a former Colonal in the British Army. James himself is a former Captain. At the time of this recording, his father (Charles) seen with him in the video was dieing of Kidney disease. At the time everybody thought he would be dead in a few months. After the Recording was done, all the crew were in tears & sobbing. Charles in his British Stiff Upper Lip tone says "Hey, why is everybody crying, I'm still here." None of James or his siblings were compatible to be donors. Fortunately, after this song was released & the story was made public, a distant cousin with the same name as his father, (Charles Blunt) came forward after hearing the story & was compatible & thus Charles is now alive & well living with James Mother. It was all recorded in one take as James wanted it as it was in it's rawness. I'm an Old Australian bloke, but the first time I saw that, my shirt sleeve was drenched. I haven't cried like that since I lost my parents. I'm 64 years old. Keep going ladies.

As a 21 year old man who has a very close relationship with his father, just hearing this made me cry and wish you the best. We are both very prideful and arrogant man who have only gotten this far because of his knowledge of my age and going through my teenage years. But, as we both get older, it is getting harder to just move past certain things and forgive so this comment made me realize I need to find a way to let my pride go sometimes. A father is living their first life too, so thank you man and thank you for your service sir.

Thank you for your service, and thank you for SURVIVING your service in all the ways that really matter. The military just WRECKS a lot of men, including the ones who come home.
I'll never forget Patrick Stewart's episode of "Who Do You Think You Are?" - all he knew of his father was an awful man who was violent to him and his mother, a bitter old man he certainly never liked. His episode was less about tracing his lineage all the way back, as it was for his friend Ian McKellen. It stayed almost exclusively with his father, and traced him all the way through his military service on the continent during WWII, as he went from village to village, fighting Nazis and liberating French citizens. It put Sir Patrick in touch with all of these ancient men and women in little French villages who remember what he did for them, and told nothing but great stories about how great a man he was.
It was the experience of the war that completely destroyed him, the horror of seeing Nazi atrocities firsthand, that left him brainblown and traumatized and completely unable to carry on a normal life. He was such an incredible man, and it was so important to see and respect that.
A lot of Patrick Stewart's charity work is based on helping people recover from violence. In honour of his mother, for years that was donating to battered women's shelters and protective victims of domestic violence. Ever since he found out who his father really was, his charity work has expanded to supporting veterans who come home as victims of a different sort of violence--and maybe victims of their own violence too. It's such an important side of his philanthropy, and one I wish more people talked about.

I only discovered this song this past year - I was driving as it was playing and had to pull over because I could no longer see. I listen and blubbered like a baby throughout the song, and when it ended, I wiped the tears away, blew my nose, picked up my phone and pressed replay and repeated the whole blubbering incident again.
Loved your reactions! It's one of few I've seen with multiple people watching together, letting their emotions and thoughts bounce off one another, creating an entirely different dynamic.

I noticed the backstory has been explained, but they left out one aspect: James' dad was a kidney donor himself. So when HE got kidney disease, he didn't have an extra kidney to work from. The only thing he was left with was to get a kidney transplant. This song is about as heartbreaking as it gets.

This song never fails to hit hard. Maybe the most emotional performance ever? James is a tough cookie having served with NATO in Bosnia during the Balkan wars and is a monster on Twitter where his put downs of haters are legendary. His most famous song is ‘You’re Beautiful’ which is somewhat less crippling emotionally.

When the camera stopped, story goes, his dad said why is everyone crying I am still here. I SO wanted to ask you ladies to do this but I know you are SWAMPED with requests. What a powerful song though. Seen this literally days after my dad passed from stroke complications and was so glad I too got say goodbye before he left us. I first heard this song when I got in my car after spending the night with my step-dad in the hospital. He had a heat attack and they discovered that he had stage 4 lung cancer while he was there. We both knew what that meant, but we didn't really discuss it, but we talked all night, and I told him how much he meant to me and how much I loved him for treating me like his blood relative, and how much I learned from him him about being a good dad to my daughters.
We were super close when i was younger, but we had grown somewhat distant for a few years in my late 20s due to some issues he had. He got his act together and we had reconciled and become close again by the time he had his haert attack.
My sister came up to take over the vigil, and as soon as I got in the car, this song came on. It fucking broke me. I'm a 6'2" 225 lb man who is normally pretty stoic, but I was sitting there with tears streming down my face while listening to this. The lines in this song fit perfectly fir a step-father and step-son relationship.
He died a couple of weeks later, and I am so thankful that I got to tell him what he meant to me before he died. I would've hated to have not had that time and not talked to him about all of it.

I'm not for sure if it has been written previously but the music video ( because of Jame's Dads condition) was shot in one take. The reason James did this with his father was because the odds were really against him - one kidney ( after he donated one to save someone else) - stage 4 renal failure - and being able to get a kidney at his age that would sustain him (the reason why James is seen wiping away tears. This is a video and song that stays like his hit "Your Beautiful" - Thanks for the reaction girls - yo🥲

James Blunt is great at pulling emotions out of people which I find surprising considering his dad brought him up with that "men don't cry" mentality. His most famous song is "You're Beautiful" which was everywhere in early 2000 so am surprised at how many people that don't know him when I see reaction to this song. "Good bye My Lover" is another sad one if you've ever been through a hard break up.

The Girl that never was is another tear jerker and a recent one from James. You should also check out Carry you home, No Bravery and Goodbye my lover. As for upbeat......not James' strong suit lol.

I could not imagine singing this song for my father if he was dying. This is what James did for his father who was dying of kidneybdisease. Amazingly when thisnsong came out and the story was told a distant cousin came in and was a match for a kidney transplant. I believe his is still loving to this day because of this song. Also if you haven't seen it yet look up Iam Tongi singing this song on American Idol months after losing his father. First see his audition and then watch him play it live with James. If you don't tear up watching it them you might be the monster

Well done for making it through without pausing! Check out his song "No Bravery" about what he experienced in the Kosovo war in the late 90s while serving in the British Army under NATO. It's a song that is brutal and annoyingly still so relevant now. James is a brilliant storyteller, one of the best. He'll always make you feel something, whether that's sadness, joy, or anger. For something of his more light-hearted, check out "Bonfire Heart".

This was the first time he'd sung it to his dad, who had only recently been diagnosed with stage 4 kidney disease and was not expected to survive, although they did eventually find a donor and he made it. Both James and his dad are former officers in the British military. First time I heard this was 3 days after my Dad passed away and it broke me I lost my Dad 4 years ago this August after he fell and hit his head sadly he didn't survive it caused a bleed on his brain I sadly never had the chance to tell him I loved him and that hurts but i know he is at peace now.

James Blunt (real name Blount) is an extremely talented singer/songwriter. As you've seen in the comments below, he served in the military as a British Army officer in Kosovo... Eventually served in the Household Cavalry. He also apparently stood watch over the Queen Mother's coffin. An interesting side note - there's a chapel within the Tower of London called 'St. Peter Ad Vincula', see it if you ever go there. In there is a memorial to two Blounts, James' ancestors, dating back a few centuries. I was surprised to see it and be shown it myself, by a Yeoman Warder, because something else was closed (yes, even I as a Brit still go to places like the Tower!). The family has a long history.
This song hits hard. I think back to several years ago, when I watched my own father slowly ebbing away in a hospital bed. Blunt's back catalogue is well worth a listen. He is terrific.

I saw the video in 2020 about 2 months after my dad passed away. He died from a stroke and heart attack 2 weeks after covid shut down everything. Mom was alone with him when he passed away and we had to wait for a text in a parking garage. This song hits hard for me. I'm a nursing assistant and I know I couldn't save him but I fight those demons and monsters in my head everyday. I just wish I could have done more. I miss him so much.

My thoughts are with you, Alicia❤. My father suffered a stroke and heart attack in February 2020. Miraculously, he survived and I was his caretaker for three years. He suffered another stroke this April and sadly passed a few weeks later. I’m so grateful for these last three years we had but I miss him so.

My apologies for the delayed response, only stumbled upon your channel this evening. I don’t comment much but feel compelled because I’ve heard this song and watched reactions countless times but never have I witnessed the dichotomy of life experience shared so raw. Lil cutie in the middle posted up at a near 45 degree angle at 2:19 into the song. Anyone who has been through it knows what his simple lines mean. When they turn off all the lights, when you fold their clothes on the chair. When someone outside of your circle kindly lets you know it’s time and they aren’t coming home. Not judging in the least for those who haven’t been there, simply expressing respect for those of us who have. Best wishes in the journey for you all.

James doesnt do 'upbeat' in his songs, although in real life you cant get him to be serious about anything, even this song. in an interview he said that he had joked with his father saying "you know if you die this will make me millions". Yet theres no doubt the emotions in his songs are absolutely real and raw. when youve taken some time to recover you might want to check out 'goodbye my lover' from him. his biggest hit you have almost def already heard even if you didnt know the artist or recognise the title. its 'youre beautiful' and i'm sure you would know it if you heard it. thankyou for this beautiful reaction to a song very close to my heart. i watch every reaction that i can find to it. the best comment ive ever seen is "this isnt just music, its therapy".

One thing I haven't seen in the comments is a little info on the kidney transplant that saved his father's life. James wrote this because they couldn't find a donor match, but the power and publicity surrounding the release of this video caused a distant cousin (who happened to have the same name as James's father) to get tested, and was a match. The surgery took place only 22 days after the video was released. This demonstrates the power of social media!
