    I’m a grandma and homeschooling my 12 yr old granddaughter. This is our fourth year. By the grace of God and that alone we go forward! Here are some things Charlotte Mason teaching style. I have subscribed to the channel on you tube. I just love listening to your passion! We do teaching g textbooks as well. Pace, daily grams, explode the code, writing strands possibilities for launguage. For science- pace, natures explorers, campfire, generations, moving beyond the page. History-pace, Tuttle twins, homeschool in the woods. It takes me a month or so before next school year of research. And by the way, you’ve said what many haven’t. ❤

    We've been on the homeschooling journey since my son was in mid-kindergarten, and he is now 14, so I can definitely relate to what you're saying about different things in different seasons. I come from a traditional school background, as well...and, I was even a teacher in the public school system for a handful of years. The freedom of homeschooling is such a blessing. May the Lord continue to lead and guide us all, and help us to recognize His grace in all of the areas we have fallen short. The welding class sounds fun. My son was curious about that, as well!

    Have you looked into Campfire Curriculum? They are unit studies as well, and have quite a few interesting topics many boys would like, including trades and very cool professions. 💛

    Even for my high schoolers, I try to keep things as light as I can. This leaves my kids plenty of time for their own interests. They read books, play volleyball, clear trails in the woods, build ten-foot tall snowmen, design and print things on our 3D printer, build with LEGOs, fix all of the broken things, (lawn mowers, drones, rc cars, etc.), make jewelry and dresses, train the puppy, write computer programs, and learn to play guitar. There are so many things that my kids love to do and they would not have the time to pursue them if they went to public school or even if we had a full homeschool schedule. These don't become a part of our school. I just borrow books from the library and buy supplies for whatever interests them, but they get to choose when and if they do it.

      How do you ladies approach Picking the unit studies? I love this idea and we’ve done a few little rabbit holes but when leaving it up to my son he has no specific topic he cares to dive inton

    • @SimplyLivingIt
      @SimplyLivingIt  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just read the options off to the kids and let them pick what sounds interesting! Or...if it is something that applies to our lifestyle in some form, we will do it! Not all of them are always interested and not every unit study is our favorite. But, we do what we feel is important or interesting!

    • @amygrant4915
      @amygrant4915 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lonegamers7826 I start off by asking them if there are anything they want to learn. Right now I have a second grader obsessed with Jurassic Park and DNA. So we are learning DNA, yes a second grader knows DNA. It isn’t Jurassic Park but it pulls it together.
      They are all going to be different and right now it is east because I have little ones so we may need to pull it I to a family style later but for now all my kids get what they want.
      Maybe just start with something and maybe that will developers. Just don’t give up. You’ll find what he is looking for.

    Our read aloud time was our families favorite this past year, I can't wait to continue them 💗 Also I love how you always reassure us that just because it works for you doesn't mean it will work for me. I think that is one of the most beautiful parts of homeschool, we get to choose what works/fits best for our own family.

    5th year wrapping up and we are completely changing our "normal". We felt overextended and like we were going through the motions. So as much as we loved our curriculum for the last 2 years my mindset has completely shifted. I have had them sit with me and start picking things they want to learn and enjoy. More reading, more life experiences and skills, more time with devotionals and taking our very full days and completely doing it differently going forward.

    Jumping back in to mention that I appreciate how intentional you're being and how honest. Oh my gosh!!!! This is me. I've been struggling with feeling guilty about starting and not finishing any curriculum choices. Going into our 5th year and I'm realizing that we are a little bit of Un-schoolers, gamers, fly by the seat of our pants pull the books out homeschoolers. Definitely not a box checker or scheduler. I've tried and tried but it just doesn't work for me. So, thank you....thank you ......thank you for letting me know I'm not alone.

      You’re not alone! I’m a mom of 10, ages 14-1 and I have 7 school aged in that mix. I’m more of a relaxed homeschool mom who likes to try different together things while letting my independent readers work on the core subjects at their own pace. I don’t function well with stuff that makes me feel like I have to be the security guard, making my kids do every little thing so I can check a box. I prefer to gently conduct while everyone plays their instruments at the right moment!

I’m putting it in God’s hands and what He thinks is best. I can tell you if she goes back I’m going to be so lost! I’ve loved every moment of this past year and a half. I wish id always homeschooled! On the more formal homeschool front, I've found that we prefer science textbooks by late elementary school, but living books to enjoy and (mostly orally) narrate for pretty much everything else. We do also use curricula for math and language arts. As much as I'd like to do more together as a family, it works better for me to just teach 1-2 kids at a time. We are still in the planning phase. I have bought most things, but still have several decisions to make. Back in the beginning, I had the next year planned out by mid-April, but now it takes a lot longer to figure it out.

Any suggestions for spelling in 4th and 6th grade? My boys are not strong spellers. I need something fun too because they hate spelling. I have a lot of trouble fitting everything in. It's like today 4 of them got done but 1 didn't get math done or these 3 got done but these 2 didn't do their reading/spelling lesson. How do you fit it all in? I'm just talking about the core subjects reading, spelling and math, then of course cooking, cleaning, laundry and for us loads of therapies and home health aids coming over to help with our son. I always have gather round sitting there ready to go but it ends up going untouched from us just trying to get those core subjects done. I need a visual of how much time each thing should take. They do so many things one on one with me that we just run out of time.

    • @SimplyLivingIt
      @SimplyLivingIt  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh mama, we very rarely get all the things done just as I had hoped! That's why we reverse record keep. We go about our day and write down what we accomplish instead of the weight of the schedule on my back. That helps us out greatly. I do k ow everyone does things so differently which is why the amount of time each subject should take, is SO hard to even say! But I am curious, have you ever tried or looked in to a loop schedule? 💗

      @chanellergful 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SimplyLivingIt yes I tried a loop schedule but I'm thinking I didn't do it right lol it seemed like there were days during the week we wouldn't touch it so we would do the same subject each week because the only day we could get to it was a certain day? Maybe I should do a weekly loop instead of each day of the week? This fall I will have a freshman, 7th, 5th, 2nd, and Pre-K. Being out of the home is killing us. I know we can't stop the out of town medical trips but maybe we need to transition therapies to home health as well? We spend about 8 hours a week sitting in the van outside therapy trying to school.
