My daughter had a meltdown about cleaning the other day and it was the same conversation, you aren’t going to love every single thing you have to do in life. Sometimes you just have to do it so you can get on to the things you like better and some days school is like that too and that’s ok, get it done then go have fun.
❤🙏 1 million times yes! We have a 27-year-old daughter, who looks different than our 11 and eight-year-old sons… All have had different seasons of loving to learn and specific subjects versus others but definitely as they get older things change. You are 100% correct on some days will be good and some days not so much, but the conversation lately has been that we are to find joy in all things according to the Lord and God created learning so even in hard times we need to find a positive and something that encourages us as we learn. Also, knowing that you get to do the extra curricular learning from sewing and crafting with our daughter to woodworking and Legos with our boys has been a motivator as well.😉 thank you for being 100% honest because this truly is what homeschooling looks like especially as seasons change and children grow and the difference between boys and girls. Blessings, sweet mama!💗
Oh gosh thank you for this! I have literally made myself sick over feeling like I’m missing the mark in homeschooling! You hit the nail on the head that we aren’t going to always love all the things, AND THAT’S OK! It’s actually the way that it is, even as adults! Thank you so much for this! It has given me so much more grace for myself!
I sure needed this! I’ve tried to diligently follow a curriculum but this year, my grandson has not wanted to really do any of it. I’ve switched it up and started doing a lot of problems on the whiteboard. Or just get a pile of change and create different scenarios, learning how to count it. Not the workbook and that simple change, has helped. He seems to be retaining it better. He asks to do his work that way. I’m literally learning as we go. And sometimes, I feel like I’m the problem and a horrible teacher. I’m so thankful to have you to remind me that there will be times like this!
I hope you sweet mamas who reach out in desperation...feeling drained....felling like you're doing everything wrong because your kids don't "love" learning...I hope you're are encoruaged!!! Maybe we need to change the way we view "learning?" I know I've had to over the years. Too much to say in a short 14 minute video...but just know not everything is as it seems. Some kids will love learning...math...science, etc. Some won't love those subjects in the "traditional" way...but we show up faithful. We walk alongside them and explain the importance and work through these things. Learning can take on a million different forms and let's open our eyes to see that! ❤ Some subjects just stink...but we diligently walk it out and and teach our children how to persevere and rise up when challenged.
I love this so much. I had the mom of one my of best friends tell me that yes, it’s super important to interest based learn but sometimes you just have to pull the mom card. Sometimes they need to sit and just do something because you see them growing and being successful- even if they don’t see it in the moment.
My girls are high school.. and it’s the same. They know they have to do Math even though they don’t enjoy it we do Gather round units and I let them pick and we bring in the books and videos and they love that part!!! But one of them loves to sew and her dream is to open up an Etsy shop of different time period clothing which leads her down the rabbit hole of history!! And the other loves photography and wants to do that!! so my husband and I decided recently that we are going to really let them explore that over the next three years and push for them to build their own business. Because those are things that they really love so they want to learn and also it is a job for later in life if they decide to have a family, they could still do those and raise their children. To us that’s the most important thing!
Absolutely. Let them concentrate on those things (love the historical clothing idea!) For the majority of the time, and if they need to do a spot of maths a couple of times a week, they won't mind as much because they know the majority of their time is doing what they love.
@ we’ve been talking a lot about math and how it will help them run their business… it really has changed their mindset on it!! It’s taken years of homeschooling to get to this point :)
Mom of three boys here too, they learn SO much more by doing what they love so much more than any book work we do. Others give me “the look” when I count it as school. I just say okay let me see you rebuild a snow blower, chainsaw, and clean & tan a deer hide like native americas did….
Man I wish I saw this video when we were starting out 7 years ago! It’s so true. I spent too much time beating myself up over my kids not enjoying every lesson. As if it was a reflection of my own character. In turn, my kids felt defeated. I’ve now come to a place where I am accepting that it’s OK if they don’t love everything they’re learning!! They’re happy too now that I’ve chilled out a bit about it. lol Thank you for your video. 💛
It's probably pretty common fir kids not to want to sit down indoors and learn or do worksheets, like you say, some do, but most it's not the type of thing most kids want to do. I totally agree that letting kids get into things THEY are interested in is the big game-changer. My kid needs to be in the mood if I want her to sit down for a while, but there are so so many things that she keeps herself busy with that she learns so much from, even much more than I might know about it! The creativity, the passion, the lewtning and enthusiasm that she gets frkm these things (ie, gardening she does and loves it). I can't wait to hear what you're studying yourself Jamie! I hope it won't be long before you let us know! Love from a mumma in Australia 🇦🇺
I was unschooled myself and I vividly remember my dad having me help him figure out exactly how much hay and grain we needed for all our farm animals for the winter and how much that would cost. Thats quite a complex problem with a lot of different animals! Figuring square footage of a shed we built and all the angles, measurements involved. Calculating the mpg of our car. Did I do some advanced algebra... No. But I don't need that for my life. And if I ever do, then I will learn what I need to when the time comes. I think we forget that humans have been learning things as we needed to for most of history and we don't need to have everything figured out by 18 for a piece of paper. So many things in life become fun later on when you have more context for it, or the interest blooms. Could I force my kids to do some history book for school just because we are "supposed to"? Sure. Will they actually retain any of it if they hate it? Probably not much and that just feels like public school at home. I think I have a unique view as an unschooled adult because I haven't missed out on anything in my life because I wasn't forced to do things I wasn't interested in. I fostered the interests instead because that's how you discover what you want to do with the rest of your life and what your strengths are. You can always fill in a gap in knowledge or skills when you need too! And then you will have an interest or need for the information so learning it will be enjoyable ❤
I am very happy with finally reading this. I go back and forth with what to teach and what to let go. I sit and look over the choices and wonder why. Why should we force a child to listen to how to diagram a sentence, I can't recall I ever learned that. I do remember how embarrassing it was when I was called up front to go against another fellow student and answer questions and states and capitals. I want to see what a day is like in a true unschooling place.
@@tobytobin6786 I always share this video with people that interested. I don't watch their channel regularly or anything but they have a few unschooling videos and I agree with their stance for the most part and it has really been close to my experience. 😊 th-cam.com/video/DxfeJxyi8Ls/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ubL50z2TVUXx_aLe
On our 10th year of homeschooling with 3 girls and 1 boy. I have 2 girls that love the sit down work and one girl and my boy who would rather do anything else😂 But we get through the math and the English lessons and we dive into the subjects and topics that interest them and focus on their strengths. I read a quote early into my homeschool journey that said something like, “most people if their child struggles with math but excels at tennis would hire a math tutor, but I would hire a tennis coach” and that quote has always stuck with me. Of course I make my kids do their math lessons but it’s not the end of the world if they hate it, they will have other things that they are good at that they will love.
I can’t thank you enough for making this. I have an 8, 7 autistic child, and a 4 year old. My 8 year old hates it but I have wondered if she has a learning disability. My son is autistic non verbal so that’s another story but my 4 year old seems to love learning. I’ve been struggling so you have no idea how much this helps me !!!!
My middle hates all things school. Reading, even if it's a topic he loves, NOPE. He hates it. But he has stopped fighting it. He understands there are legal requirements that have to be met. He spent 6 years in public school. He knows homeschool is preferable. He still doesn't want to do any of it. Now that he is more mature, he will do the work without complaining. Maybe, by the time he's ready to graduate, he might actually like it. Maybe it's just a normal thing most kids at 10-13 go through. All I know is that being consistent and firm, no matter how much they complain, eventually will pay off with better attitudes.
Thank you for this video as I needed to hear this! I have three boys all littles and the two school age hate school but love learning interest based things (which is really everything else). Teaching them that we have requirements that have to be met is certainly challenging and most times unpleasant and exhausting to say the least as they are 8 and 6. I hope in time that they will understand that we have to do XY and Z without the tears/fight in order to get rewarded so to say. I have seen tiny improvements but man it takes all day to do our subjects (thanks to New York State requirements 😉) as they just drag their feet when it comes to school 🤦. Thank you for opening my eyes as I need to be more "sympathetic" and "patient" as well as being gentle towards their feelings. To keep explaining why we have to school so that we can do the things that are of interest to them and hope that their school attitude changes for the positive ❤. Thank you so much 🤗!
My kids do it just so they can go outside and build, hunt, fish, or just read a book in the cow field. Everyday life is learning, once families realize that it is SOOOOO beautiful!

This describes my 14 year old to a T. Doesn't care to do book work, but give him something to build or a motor to work on and he's all for it.
Good lad. He'll learn so much by being hands on. Don't worry. He's doing fine and so are you ❤

Hey Jamie! Asking for advice on reading and spelling curriculum... I have a 3rd grade struggling reader. We have tried The Good and The Beautiful and now AAR and AAS but it is a bit overwhelming. What curriculum did you use for phonics/reading and spelling?
Hey friend! I'm sorry it's been a struggle. We did enjoy AAR and AAS but I never did them as suggested. Early early on we used Abeka (our own way) to teach reading. Once they grasped it, we played around with other options.
Hi Jamie. Any suggestions for spelling for elementary and middle school grades? Thank you.
Hey friend! Hmmm...depends on the kiddo! We've done phonetic zoo from IEW...we've also done old school list style because one of my boys thrives that way!
We also used and had great success with Abeka early on in our homeschool. K4 through 3rd...then we switched it up.
Thank you so much for all the suggestions. Do you give your boys book reports to do, and what are your thoughts about it?
