Hey, David, fellow counter here! 😉 This is why MP (and of course Danny Carey) are one of my favourite drummers. Speaking. of counting, that's what is so great about music. You can study music from so many different angles and often I just listen to an album just focusing on 1 instrument (If I am familiar with that album that is) That's why I really love bands like DT who know their fanbase so well and what they'd like that they have released special editions of their albums with isolated Drum/guitar/bass tracks to make it easier for people who want to study a specific part of the music 😊

I remember trying to cover Crawl Away From Me (much less complicated song) our drummer woul throw his sticks walk outside a curse existence after each take. He did get. It and played it perfect eventually, but it was an experience.
Mike breaking down the 6's into 2 sets of 3 is not only exactly what I did to learn this song (I play guitar, not drums) but it's what I tell people to do because it helped me focus more on the accents in the song. The guitar (and I think bass as well) are using a set delay pedal throughout that main riff. So breaking it into 2 sets of 3 helps figure out timings much easier
David, I love it when you do these Drumeo videos because of the fact that you play bass. You know all too well about the rhythm section. I hope you do more of these.
@@THEDavidHeretic If i were in charge I would throw you a total mathematical nightmare of a song. Not to be mean, I would know going into the session that you are OCD with counting and I wouldn't be able to resist giving you something ridiculous. LOL.. Don't sweat it, you would shine. 😊😜
53:32 all these people dont realize they love Tool BECAUSE of Tools weird timing too.... Not yet aanyways. Also speaks to how well Tool is at making them smooth and groovy
You are definitely vindicated on counting with this reaction. I am a feel player too, but if you can't count it, or in other words know the pattern of the flow, then how are you going to incorporate feel? If Mike tried to learn this on feel alone there is no way he would have been able to do it in less than 6 hours. Knowing the blue print let's you be free to add your own color over it. If you are in odd time signatures the count is a must. Can you learn to play by ear or feel of course you can, but you are going to be listening to the track for hours and days to get that feel down. If you are in a studio time is money. Learn to count and it will save you a lot of time and money.

That look he gets at 43:20 is the same look Danny gets on his video. Somebody said Danny gave the look because he messed up an accent. I think he is just happy he made it through that section.
And what a great ad for Drumeo. One of the greatest drummers in the world genuinely requesting the notation. Makes me want to pick up my sticks again. And play a Foo Fighters song-Pneuma's crazy!
You know it’s an insane song when it makes one of the best drummers in the world look like amateur hour, if Mike Portnoy of all people has a hard time grasping the time signatures, it would make you want to quit the drums.

You are totally in the right! Don't dumb yourself down to satisfy people. You know bands of that caliber would want you to look under the hood, to see how the motor runs. Maybe give your, "Just feel the music" fans a little more clarity on what your doing inside your head, when you are breaking down the numbers. I learned something on this video, with the accents and fills part.
I grew up learning various woodwind instruments in school and guitar and bass at home. I agree it's a trillion times easier to see someone do it. Especially with guitar and bass because I learn a lot of it by ear.
I knew this would be a fun reaction! And if Danny Carey does take up The Dance of Eternity, I'd have no issue with you adding that in yourself. 🙂 I'll have to revisit Stone In Love to listen for the bassline. Always liked that song, and it hasn't been played to death.
I do find it interesting how you usually take the whole phrase and don't break it up. I usually take the accent as the identifier as to how the actual signature is determined and broken up.
This is such a fun video. Mike is great. It was a longer video, but I knew you wouldn't mind in the end because it was worth it. But I gotta say. You're not vindicated about time signatures. He was expected to play the song, so of course he had to work out the time signature. He obviously heard the song before and it was one of his favorite albums that year, but he seemingly didn't work out the time signature prior to this. You're not learning the song to play it. You're reacting to it. With that said, I don't have a problem with you working out the time signature. The issue i have is when 95% of your commentary is about it and seem to ignore so many other aspects of the song as a result. I watch and support to get a reaction to the song as a whole, not just the time signature.
I respectfully disagree. Yes, he's reacting to a song rather than learning to play it, but he is also a professional musician and still goes on tours. So staying sharp in his counting would help. And as I think he's mentioned before, he's done it enough that it's not something that's easily turned off.
@zephyr835 like i said, i don't have a problem with him working it out, only that he spends so much time on it for some songs and ignoring giving his reaction to many other aspects of the song that he would normally have an opinion on.
