Danny Carey has a way of throwing in some amazing little bits that are easy to miss if you are not paying attention and makes it all look so easy. His posture is always impeccable. In my mid 50s, I am finally getting to knocking off learning the drums from my bucket list, and he is a drummer I have been looking too for style and structure.
I have had the absolute honor of seeing them do this live🤤You have no idea how intense they are live! Yes, it is an experience. It's not a concert it is an experience! I need them to come back at least one more time before they finally retire, although I hope they never do. They can keep going till they're on stage with walkers and oxygen machines, and I know they would still kill it!🤘🖤
Well done! best reaction video of this i have sever seen...love the time signatures and the tempo changes...awakenings by unleash the archers....worthy of a reaction ro :)
During the long toms section around 6:30, watch his left foot keeping time on the hi-hat. It's not simply lifting and pushing down on the beat. I think he's making it hit itself during his foot lift. Witchcraft.
Unnecessary cuts but good reaction anyways. As I have mentioned on a lot of reactions to this I work at VF here in the Boston area and was on the set up crew for this video. (!the cam he looks into was my set up). We had another view directly to his left but it was glitchy so we left it out. Yes he uses Paiste, which we gave him 💩 about because VF is partnered with Zildjian. Thank you for helping to promote our video( unwittingly as it was)
@joelyjamz cutting out the first 1:20 ? Adverts wouldn't have affected the length of the performance. 🤪 You.showing our video is advertising. Thanks for the free promotion 😃
That was a treat! I like Fear Inoculum and Invincible as well as this one. I am a new Tool fan and I have not listened to their older music yet. I am sure it is killer tho.
Good stuff! Great reaction. I struggled with the time signature until I saw a reaction a while back by another drummer and he said it was 33/8 or 33/16 if you like. That will always get you back to the 1. How you count it out can be sets of 5/8's and 6/8's. So like 6/8 - 6/8 - 5/8 - 5/8 - 6/8 - 5/8 or similar.
Indeed yes, there are a number of correct ways of conceptualizing that main bit. I usually think of it as being in "11" with the beats subdivided into triplets, but the groupings of sixes and fives that you put forth are actually better... as they contain more information about how the piece is actually supposed to sound... or be felt and heard. I don't know if it's easier to read with the time signature changing back and forth, but it's more faithful to the music sooo... tough titty. Besides, it isn't that bad... Some people might actually find that way easier to read... Peace and love be upon you, sir.
@@primateinterfacetechnologi6220 I agree with that. I thought at one point that it was 3 sets of 11/8, but it felt off. That was why I struggled with it. Splitting it into 5/8's and 6/8's seemed to fit, once someone pointed it out.
Tool army reporting for duty. I'm pretty sure you will find "tool folks" as a group to have few if any dicks, pricks, or twats... except perhaps in the literal sense. Just a rather diverse group of music-munching mammals who share an intense enthusiasm for the snarling, majestic, and meaningfully messaged badassery, that is the very unique band "Tool". You are among nice folks, I can guarantee this. Listening to Tool can be kind of like a math lesson sometimes... perfect listening fodder for a drummer. Peace and love.
My constructive advice is don't skip through the songs, pause it instead to avoid copyright issues. Skipping makes the song disjointed and interrupts the flow of Tool massaging your brain. Imagine listening to the radio and the song kept skipping and you were missing sections of the song, you'd just change the station. Best of Luck, Danny is a best, the Tool Army always loves seeing people enjoy the Octopus
Have you tried taking each limb and counting the beats an trying to work out timing and how he puts each limb together?. Anyone who slags you off about not knowing drummers just reply, asking if they know instrument players from every genre of music. P.s you are very brave displaying that shirt given current current situation 😉
It's diaappointing you cut stuff out. I understand why, but it's still disappointing. The transition from double strokes to single on those pads is something worth commenting on in and of itself. In case you're wondering, the pads he uses with the tabla sounding sample (what he starts the interlude with) are custom pads he personally developed in collaboration with the makers of them. They're called Synesthesia Mandala Drums, and they've got 128 individual strike position elements along with 127 levels of belocity detection, allowing for a ton of flexability in how they're programmed. The whole interlude is an absolutely wild demonstration of limb independence. Not to mention how he builds it up in complexity.
I had ads at the start and didn’t want to cut it. Ad blockers now don’t work on TH-cam and I’m being honest here I’m not paying £15 a month just do not have adverts
He’s wearing wrestling shoes because of the thin soul gives him better feel on his pedals. He said he used to wear Converse and wear the soles down on his motorcycle that he found wrestling shoes and fell in love.
My first Danny Carey reaction!!!
What did you think of this performance.
What shall I react to next?

It's not my favorite TOOL song, but I've seen it multiple times, and every time, it is the best song performance.
