I just released my active drum transcription of Invincible! Follow along with Danny Carey's 7 over 3 polyrhythm throughout the song: th-cam.com/video/I8iqbeVnndU/w-d-xo.html
He was until this album. It seems like he was holding back for their swan song. In Fear Inoculum he clearly shows that he is one of greatest guitar players of all time
I got to see them perform this song live back in January. It was such an incredible experience and this song in particular moved me. Being in that audience was such an honor.
I saw this live during this tour. I had no idea that the solo at 14:37 was Justin on the bass. Always thought it was just a 2nd guitar recorded in studio.
Great Reaction, David. If you enjoyed this, then you'll love "Descending" and you should probably do another reaction to "Pneuma", just the audio...loved your reaction you did with Danny's drum cam, but would like to see you analyze the song more deeply
they can make a great groove using 7/4 because there is space between the notes, nothing is overplayed, it fits, also the melody of maynard does a great job with the groove.
Your reactions are always so good, and now you have made my day by rating one of my favorite Tool songs. Can't get much better than that. I have lived in Seattle for the last 40 years, yes I'm old, Moving on. I have seen some amazing music come out of this city though out the years, Alice in Chains, and Soundgarden two of my favorites, RIP Chris & Layne. There is another band however that seems to have been forgotten, although I don't know why. They are called Candlebox, the lead singer is Kevin Martin he has an amazing voice. I would love it if you could give me your opinion on what I consider one of their best songs (YOU) please it is important that you do the lyric video because the others have been cut to the point of losing the message they are trying to convey, and the message is so necessary.........
At 20:58, does anybody else get the vibe of the pocket watch tune from a Few Dollars More when Justin is playing that haunting part just before they all drop into that perfect, head-banging jam session?
Adam Jones is my favorite guitarist mainly because he does drive a LOT of Tool songs. I know people praise Danny Carey the most, and I love him too, but Tool has always been all about Adam Jones's guitar for me.
I’ve listened to and enjoyed TOOL since the early 90’s and David and others similar to him have helped me appreciate their music even more! Thanks David!
can you imagine Maynard sitting in a car listing to this and singing and making up the words, he always finds a way to fill each song just enough to never over do it.
That entire album is a masterpiece, well worth the wait. I know many people love Lateralus. And why wouldn't they, it's a great album. But for me, Fear Inoculum completely blows it out of the water. This song ranks slightly below Pneuma and the title song in my book though. The 9.1 fits well, I think, which is kind of crazy for a song that isn't the best on the album. But it's Tool, so there's that. I loved your remark about how melodic Danny's drumming is. That for me is a key to why I love Tool despite there being only 3 instruments, which I'm usually not a fan of. Danny basically plays for two.
I like that the songs seemed to focus more than ever, full composition, rather than worrying about hooks and making big hits...I can see where some people complained a bit, but for me, i agree with it being called a masterpiece.
@@DanielM796 It's easily their worst album for me. Pneuma is their most boring song and the whole album is samey and pedestrian, apart from the bit of rocking at the start of 7empest. Even the little interludes are nothing we haven't heard before.
@@TerribleEnglishto me, every track sounds completely different from one another. I dont really give a shit about the interludes like with any tool album, but the actual songs in the album stand on their own. Pneuma isn’t the best at all from the album but it sure isnt boring imo. Invincible and Descending are basically the pinnacle of tool’s whole discography.
Nothing like DH gushing over Tool and pointing out weird details noone else would ever notice. Great stuff as always, and I can't wait to see Descending and Culling Voices...
This was the last song they played in the show I went (SLC) and the only one they allowed to record, and I’m not into recording but I kind of glad I saved a piece of this song played live.
I've seen some people who love this song and people who've don't it a little dull. I think I fell a little more in love with this task because of a mix of the powerful lyrics and being at that age where the powerful lyrics hit me in the chest hard. Tool has been one of the few bands who have been able to hit me with extreme emotional reaction. There's a lot of other bands that hit me on an emotional level, but tool is on a different plain and just hit in a different way
I would have never noticed that they actually sped up, if David hadn't marveled over it. when you think about it, it makes sense, because of the section at the very end. speeding up the tempo ever so slightly and then dropping into a halftime feel, as David said, creates the illusion of having slowed down, then, at the end, when they go back into regular time, the ending has that extra energy because of the increased tempo. Fricking brilliant! Thanks, David!
@DH here's a clip i recorded a couple years ago: th-cam.com/video/GG0Es5LK1Lo/w-d-xo.html I first saw the technique during a live performance of Jambi, but they go full bore in Invincible. I've been playing guitar since ~1997 and while I can't for example replicate all of what what Steve Vai or John Petrucci play, I can at least recognize their techniques when I hear them. The first time I saw this it ruined me. I'd never seen it, and what I was seeing didn't match what I was hearing. Until it did. And now it's apparent across several TOOL songs. I can't think of any other band that does it, but I'm fairly myopic in my media consumption.
Had a kinda depressing day, stumbled upon your reaction of my - at the moment- favorite song by Tool. Felt better afterwards 😀 I didn’t understand why the ‘slowing down’ made me so excited and now I do. Thanks for explaining this, you’re the first person I ever heard about that. Thank you 🙏☺️🌀
Tool, masters of using instrumental delay effects just right. They have kind of a feel for when to use it, and how to not overdo it. You discribed it just right. The delay on the bass is so great, because it's not so much, that it becomes the main focus for the listener, it's just right.
That vocal effect was actually Justin playing the same notes and giving the illusion of it being the vocals having the effect. That's at least according to live videos and covers I have watched as well as my ear and knowing that Justin's pedal board rivals Danny's set up in pieces. It could have been done in post on the recording but that's how they do it live.
Another good video, thanks! I don't know if you know, but check into what all Justin does in this song if you don't know yet. Danny, as well. You may change your rating.
It cracks me up that 9.1 is a “low” score for Tool - whenever you go over 8.5 I’m amazed. And tbh, then I forget the number almost immediately. But I always remember your commentary. Seeing you connect with a song that actually challenges you and delights is just too much fun. Wonder if you’ll ever get to (more?) Jane’s Addiction. Some great live stuff out there. Either way, rock on David, Thanks for the joy.
For sure!it's wonderful...a journey through music...Even if most people didn't appreciate this last album,I think there are many pearls...after Descending,Culling voices too...Good morning here from Italy Tool Army!hope to see them live once in my life...unfortunately,this year, they don't play here...

I love TOOL but his song is giving me almost nothing emotionally. Technically it is great, but I feel nothing.
