Why, after all this time, do people still look at Lulu as a Metallica album? It's NOT Metallica! It's Lou Reed, whose backing band just happens to be Metallica! It's so easy to jump onto the hate bandwagon regarding Lulu, just like with the Load album. Metallica have never been afraid of thinking outside of the box, unfortunately, a lot of fans have! Music is art after all.
Nothing but respect for you and your thoughts. Metallica is just a feature on this album, and is incredible how hard it has been to understand by "the fans".
The reaction to this was over the top at the time. It was basically a lou reed album with metallica as his backing band. You could simply take it or leave it. People were behaving like it was their new album when it clearly wasn't or even marketed that way. Its not my cup if tea but a lot of Lou Reed fans really rate it. Bowie said it was one of his best works. It was more a Lou Reed project but people had fish in a barrell and couldnt resist shooting. Metallica do deserve criticism for various things but this was at the very least, the first thing they had done in quite a while that disregarded the mainstream, image of the band and a potential profitable venture. If nothing else it was pretty uncompromising.

Exactly, most other bands play the same style of music for decades without changing their sound or going out of their comfort zones, and no matter how good their new music is, there older albums are better. Metallica on the other hand have changed their sound with every few albums, gained a lot of newer fans, who in turn looked back and opened up to their older albums and loved them. Some people don't understand that a lot of fans wouldn't have listened to kill em all if they didn't hear the black album, load and reload first.
I remember reading an interview with Kirk hammett around the time master of puppets came out. I don't remember the question but I do remember Kirk's answer: Who know's we may make a reggae album some day.

I love all the music of "Lulu." This was as original as anything out there. There was an intangible and really strong chemistry with the five of them that really shows in this WDR Studios Germany performance.
I ve heard many bad comments and opinions about this album... Man I don't know, but to my ears this whole thing with such catchy riffs, and with Lou reed's voice, all over the songs... I founded it very interesting, and unigue, I like that reed is not following the music, if I can say that,instead he is like reading some how his lyrics... I Don t know but for me it is an awesome album, that I love to come back and hear it, it is still amazes me, great album!
This album truly is some abstract stuff. Two styles that clash hard and makes for an uncomfortable experience. Which I think its the purpose of the album. Even the artwork makes you feel like that. Props to Metallica for making such a artsy album given their fame and status.

Well to be honest I know Lulu isn't the best album ever but I really preciate that Metallica gives the opportunity to experiment a lot of new things. Lou Reed can sound weird in the album but I believe thats the spirit of itself. As a Metallica fan I encourage people to listen carefully all tracks of Lulu's album. This song is part of a 4 part epic song story, this first track tells the tale of a menacing creature, aptly called "Dragon" The second part explores into the the mysteries of our universe which is titled "Bophadese" which is named after the Bophadese constellation. The 3rd part focuses on mans delicate grasp with sanity, aptly titled "Nuts" which tells the story of a man struggling with mental illness. And to close it out, the final track tells the story of legendary boxer, Joe Frasier and his rise to fame. It is called "On your chin" with thundering base and machine gun riffing this is a great closer to the four part story.
The main riff in the background and instrumental part of this song is really good and sounds awesome, but Lou Reed just having a conversation into the mic with himself just absolutely ruins it

People forget/ignore that Lulu is a Lou Reed & Metallica album. Approaching it with the expectation of another 'Lightning' or 'Puppets' was always going to leave people disappointed. It's not unusual to hear NOISE on a Lou Reed album, but it wasn't the place for RIFFAGE! \m/
