As the proud mom of @stephsewn and the recipient of that lovely kantha jacket, I can vouch for the delightful softness of the fabric. It adds a bit of warmth without weight, and it's so colorful!
As a quilter of over 30 years, thanks for saying something about not using heirloom quilts. Give them to someone who does care about them, along with what you know, I.e. provenance, of the piece. It matters. And I’ve always loved cotton velour……glad to know it’s back, but I’ve worn it anyway! Thanks for the vid.
I'm wondering if you have any suggestions regarding old quilts. I have one that was my grandfather's. Some sections are in good shape, but other places are very worn and there are even a few holes. I'm not sure what seems more sad: cutting it up to use the good parts or leaving it in my cupboard for another 10 years. It's really not in good enough shape to display 🤷
What ruined velour for me was Futurama, I can't see or hear the word without hearing Zapp Brannigan's voice saying it 😂 I LOVE the cord tote bag, as an engineer I fully approve of clever design with fabrics like that! Might need to make one like that myself now...
Ministering to my soul right now, I LOVE Futurama 😂 You may also be please to know that I showed Josh your compliment and he is clearly feeling quite pleased with himself.
I'd make pajamas from that velour! You'd get to wear them lots and feel very fancy at bed time. Also the corduroy have you thought about a coat or jacket? I made my eldest a coat with a cape out of green corduroy and interlined it with some woolen wadding and added a satin lining into it and she loved it - it is now my youngest daughter's coat ❤
Love the idea of a lined jacket. One of the UK fabric shops (Sew Me Sunshine I think) just posted about having some shearling lined corduroy which is very tempting as well...
I imagine you’re getting ready for your wedding. Sending positive energy for all of your preparations. I’m starting my fall sewing and this was a good video with a lot of tips especially cut this fabric in a single layer tips that I will be using. Happy sewing!
Love that green velour fabric. I think if it was me, I would make a duster type jacket with big sleeves. I live in Denmark where the winters a grey and dark, so I often find that wrapping my self in colour help me get through those grey days. About the quilted items - I'm here for it! I've made several quilted jackets and vests both in new and second hand fabrics. I always quilt my fabric myself, so I know what quality product I'll end up with. I'm not a great fan of those poly - battings that are often used in pre-quilted fabrics. Instead I use a mix of organic cotton and soy fibres and for this winter I'm contemplating wool if I can find it. I'll look forward to seeing your quilted jacket. It looks like a lovely pattern and I really love the print on your fabric.
Thanks so much for the idea! A duster jacket could be really, really cool. I also hear you on the poly batting- Merchant & Mills luckily gets their quilting made with cotton, but I can imagine the poly ones feeling pretty sticky. Would love to see your quilted makes- definitely tag me on insta if you ever post them!
Wrap me in corduroy and call it Christmas! Yum. Your leftover yellow/fuchsia kantha would make a nice throw pillow cover or vest. You could make a sleeveless kimono pattern. Making things with your fabrics is fun for us viewers.
I love the bag. I am about to make a SewOverIt Amelia jacket using deadstock corduroy and lined with deadstock viscose. If I have enough scraps leftover I will make a version of the bag. I always look forward to watching your video.
Thank you so much! It always makes me smile when I see him use it. I love the Amelia jacket- I made one in a striped leopard print wool and got loads of wear from it. Really great over dresses!
Loved the video - an interesting take on autumn fabrics. Re the green velour. I’ve made the Tammy handmade mila jumper, and a hoodie in velour, which are items you can wear more than party trousers or a dress. Looking forward to see what you decide.
Thank you, I love your videos! I discovered your channel and now I am bing watching lol! I specially love your tips about fabrics, where to find them, how to use them... and also when you were talking about vintage patterns (60s!!) 🥰
Your vlog was so interesting. I learnt so much! I’m looking forward to seeing what amazing ‘properly wearable’ items you make. I’ve never heard of kantha fabric but it’s beautiful and I love that it has had a previous life. IF I ever have a definite plan to make a quilt type jacket, that’s what I’ll be using. But until it’s a definite I won’t be ordering them I promise. I loved your Mum’s jacket. 😀
I definitely will. I’m being much more focused this year in using the fabrics I have or refashioning existing garments and then wearing what I make. It feels so much better. But I do love a cosy jacket. So maybe as the weather gets cooler (less wet! 😱), a quilted jacket in kantha could be the answer.
I know this is now an older video but I just HAD to revisit since I just got my hand on some crushed velour that I am DYING to make something with! Thanks for the inspiration!❤
I would never think of buying velour but the green one you have is lovely. What about a wrap top , cardigan see Pearl cardigan by Tilly and the buttons or a kimono style jacket. You could wear it more that way.
Not sure how your beautiful green velour would work for it, but how about a kimono-type robe to wear around the house in the evenings? You could get lots of wear out of it. I was looking for a bright printed design based on a lovely green, and haven't found one I like yet. Never thought of looking at velour. I love your videos.
My mum has had the same quilted jacket for 30 years, which is now sadly too small. I was going to surprise her with a new one for Christmas, and that Merchant and Mills fabric is just the most beautiful fabric I’ve ever seen! Thank you for showcasing it - already can’t wait to sew with it
Always playing catch-up on TH-cam, but I just watched this one and had to comment. Really enjoyed the video, but I was especially interested to hear about Kantha quilts. I was not at all familiar with these. Such a great option for a quilted garment that isn't too thick and warm. They look crazy cool, and I am going to be busily researching. Also that Merchant and Mills quilted block print fabric is the fabric of dreams. I look forward to seeing what you make!
OMG that green and yellow floral velour is sooo gorgeous!!!😍 I would probably make a wrap top with epic flare sleeves out of something like that so that I could wear it in as many combinations with different bottoms as possible and feel like a princess with droopy sleeves. It's so beautiful, I can't wait to see whatever you choose to make out of it, I'm sure it will be absolutely stunning!
Loved this video, even if most of the fabrics you mention aren't really my thing. I'm not ready to return to the swishy soundtrack of corduroy trouser legs brushing past each other as I walk, acting like an advanced warning system alerting anyone in the vicinity to my approach 😂 I made a velour faux jumpsuit three or four years ago (I affectionately refer to it as my Juicy Couture tracksuit, even though the top part is a cami). The answer to how many times am _I_ going to wear wide leg velour trousers was many, many times. The trousers were my favourite secretly comfortable thing to wear to the office in the Beforetimes, so they got a lot of play. Mine are in black though, so they are a little more stealthy than yours would be if you did use that lively fabric.
I used John Kaldor Carlotta Panne Velvet fabric given to me by Minerva and wrote a fairly detailed post on it; they don't seem to stock it in black anymore, but it looks like it's still available elsewhere. I hardly ever wear anything poly but I really rate this fabric.
Hello, lovely vid, both informative and inspiring. I had a pattern pop into my mind when I saw your printed velour, the Ruby dress by fibre mood. I look forward to seeing what piece you end up making with that gorgeous fabric!
Awesome video. I found some corduroy pants at the thrift store that I need to resize and I am excited the cooler weather is coming. I live in Northern VA, and we get half crunchy leaves half damp rainy autumn! 😂 I actually made the AllWell cardigan quilted cardigan/coat in a quilted fabric and I am so excited to wear it soon. I also used bias binding on the pockets and outside, but I serged the individual pieces and topstitched them down as a design choice.
Hello, I am glad to hear you are feeling better and happy first day of autumn, too! I love all of your fabrics you have chosen for the fall season. I have bought quilted fabric from Estate sales and used them for sewing tote bags, since it is never enough to make a jacket. But I am hoping to score some more in a larger yardage to make a pants and button up shirt PJ set. I think that would be so cute and comfy for the winter. Look forward for more to come with your sewing plans!
Hi Steph, I love your velour fabric, how about a square neck crop top with big balloon short sleeve and a straight skirt with elastic top and big split up one side ..
I love the Kaja dress, what a great idea for corduroy! I adore pinafores on others, but I feel like i'd look like a toddler in them. Now to finally buy that corduroy fabric! Btw, would you consider linking the patterns you mention? I finally figured out how to spell Shultz lol, but there's 300 dress patterns to scroll through on Fibre Mood
Yes! Thank you so much for the reminder- was definitely an accident that they were left out. Here is the Kaya dress, but I will see if I can edit the video caption to add them all: www.fibremood.com/en/patterns/845-kaya-dress
I actually like to make my binding. I use the continuous binding method, which let's you get a load of binding out of a relatively small square of fabric. A 10 inch square can give you about 100 inches of tape depending on thickness! Here is a tutorial: blog.seamwork.com/tutorials-tips-tricks/continuous-bias-tape-tutorial/
I have a fabric query I hope maybe you can help with: I'm finding it really hard to find a heavyweight (300+ GSM) cotton French Terry fabric in brighter colours (especially like saffron or teal). All the fabric stores I have found online have very limited colour ranges, usually dark colours or light pastels, which are not my style. I'm hoping to make a cosy autumn hoodie (using Chalk and Notch Page hoodie pattern). Do you know any fabric sellers that would have this kind of heavy French Terry in bright colours? 🙂🙏

Whenever I see what are CLEARLY old folk quilts hacked up on tiktok to make a vest that is worn once... makes me want to cry!

You look so pretty in this outfit! Shirt is cute, necklace really pops, and makeup on point 👌😊
That beautiful green valour would look cool as a bomber jacket with striped ribbing on cuffs and waistband or some combination of an alternate fabric

Great video. I'm a child of the 70s and corduroy is the quintessential fabric of that era 😅
I'm working to convince Josh to let me make him a corduroy jacket with a giant 70s collar, but so far he is not taking the bait.

Great idea!! I actually hadn't considered homewares but that would be really lovely.
So cute the sewing together😊

Corduroy is the best- seriously underappreciated.
Suggestion for the emerald velour - I think it’s called the lounge dress by pattern emporium. Great video. Thank you
