As a french sewist I'm so happy that you talk so well about our designers ! There are so much more that I love : Atelier Bernie, Appoline patterns, Caledonia Dreamin', Bélène paris, Lysimaque sew... I also love the Russian ones.
Your delivery is a pleasure, thks for a professional vocabulary, concise info, Jedi humor, good grammar, it does matter to us older viewers. Five stars!
You are the channel I never knew I always wanted! I love your breakdown of pattern detail and really appreciate learning about international designers/patterns. I used to be in fashion design but have since left it for textile design and found you by searching for new patterns. I am for sure loving the Hussard jeans! As a Latina, I also wonder about the booty fit. You've gained a new fan in me. Love your work!
Yes!!! I was thinking the same…THIS is the channel I’ve been wanting!! And needing! I’m doing a No Buy Year for clothes (I’m a thrift shop fanatic) yet I want to curate a closet I love! I started sewing again pre-pandemic and this has inspired me to take the time to figure out what I love and want to create.
I actually do have a request. I'm looking for a pattern similar if not identical to the one shown on Boden's website the Carla Linen Midi Dress, I'm eyeing some linen on Closet Core. I'm in the US. thx! @@StephSewn
South Europeans are mostly more petite than those in Northern Europe. I’m Spanish but live in England. I’m 5ft 2” and 8 st. I make my own clothes but it’s often a struggle to find things that fit me. When I had my first son 21 years ago all the maternity clothes in England were huge on me. Luckily, my mother can sew and made me a few clothes as well as buying a couple from a Spanish maternity clothes retailer. People talk about size inclusivity but they often forget about the smaller sizes. We can also struggle to find patterns that fit us well. This video was really helpful. I had heard of Maison Fauve but not the others so thanks for sharing. 😊 I have also found the patterns from Estelina Bordeaux very nice. They come in English too and sizes 34-50.
agree ! as someone who's half spanish and half french but born + raised in australia, my height stunted at 5ft; BUT sewing my own clothing has saved me so so much. women's clothing in australia tends to be more narrow/shapeless and very elongated, fitting more toward northern european genetics. i think the word "short" to some people is in their mind, 5'3" - 5'5" but for the rest of us ladies that're actually quite petite (considering we also tend to come with a slight bit more curvature to our hips and chest too), what're we meant to do ? even like you said, even just trying to find simple patterns. there's definitely a lot of inclusivity that still needs to come in the fashion industry for sure
Learning how to make your own pattern block is an absolute life saver. Pants block, shirt block, dress block, etc. Once you have those finished you can make any style of garment you want.
Thanks for doing all the research for this series. You have found patterns that I never would have known about and really look forward to trying. This made me wonder why some companies get sooooo much exposure and then that there are others that are relatively unknown. I suppose language could be an issue. Anyway, I look forward to your future videos in this area - and others as well.
The Jedi jacket should be the universal example for the sewing community in what a difference fabric choice makes. Holy cow! 🙄vs🙂. Thanks for highlighting some non-English patterns to help broaden the influence. I hope this is a series. Well done 👍🏽
Thank you! And yes I totally agree. Pattern photos aren't everything. Glad you enjoyed it, and let me know if there are other roundups you want me to do.
You are such a darling! I have been sewing since I was a girl, but was too busy with college and raising kids. So I've jumped back in with a vengeance. I love your advice, "Don't make things just because they're a trend. Make what you love to wear." That is such wise advice. I adore your approach and look forward to many more delightful videos.
Thanks for creating this video. Immensely appreciated 😊. I'm always on the lookout for unique patterns from outside the US. It seems to be more difficult to find interesting designs. When I was a kid, the big four had variety. I used to buy many of the Vogue Individualist patterns. Sadly those went the way of the dinosaur. The big four are now the big one... I still check them out for costumes and historical stuff. Now in my 50s, I don't want to give up on fun clothes. Most everything I wear and sew is black and I take the time to make it all the same shade of black. Still holding onto Goth a bit.
Adding a BIG DISCLAIMER. I just purchased a pattern from Atelier 8 and it's only printable in A0 or A4 paper size which is not the standard 8.5 x 11, so unfortunately I am not able to print properly in Canada on a standard printer. I am attempting now to trace onto exam room paper using my laptop screen, although it's slippery and not 100% accurate, I'm hoping with my tiny bit of experience I can straighten and fix my drafts enough to get them workable. I also had to figure out how to disable the touch screen to do this. It's now become a 5-6 hr project just making the pattern. I'm not hating it, it's teaching me a lot, and if I get a wearable garment out of this I will be super pleased, cause I'm loving the European designs.
Ok, wow, the content of this video is amazing. This is the first time one of your videos has come up on my TH-cam feed and it's about time! I'm so glad I found you. I've been sewing for 3 years and to be honest, over the last 2, I've grown tired of the over-sized, loose, flouncy designs that so many of the UK/US indy designers have been offering. It's not a look that compliments my body type at all - and I am forever having to make so many adjustments. The designers you've showcased here look like they offer more in style, fit and interesting lines and I look forward to trying some of their patterns. I just hope that their instructions aren't difficult for me to understand. I'm still new enough that sometimes even the US patterns are challenging for me understand what exactly it is they want me to do! Thanks for opening up the sewing world for us!
Just discovered your channel and the series on international sewing pattern companies (I watched the Scandi ones first). Love it! Great way to discover new companies and their patterns. Thank you!
Now your 3rd video I’ve enjoyed today. Your investigation of pattern designers from abroad is epically on point. Are you planning interviews with designers to discuss their perspectives on personal style and what their personal or national approach to style, fashion and clothes are?My goodness, I could see you developing this topic into something many areas! Like a panel of designers from different countries discussing the next season, wardrobe challenges/aspirations or me made objectives.
Hello! I’m so happy I just found your channel. I really enjoyed this pattern roundup. And I love your style. I’d love to see you sew the jacket in the fabric you shared with us. It’s beautiful. ❤
This is such a wonderful idea that has introduced me to so many new designers! I am obsessed with French style and this is the perfect way to kick off my autumn sewing. Thanks for sharing.
Woah! Great choices, thank you so much for doing this research and sharing. All of these designs have so many details that I'm not used to seeing in the English speaking designers I'm familiar with. I can't choose which of these French designers I like best because they all bring something super new and interesting to me. I will say that I'm loving the diagonal seam details. They open up so many creative possibilities.
I felt the same! It really seemed like there was WAY more variety in the shapes and details. Less beginner-friendly of course, but definitely more interesting!
Thanks for sharing. I have been sewing for 4 years and adore sewing vintage patterns from Renaissance/ Colonial/Victorian/ Edwardian Eras for myself. I also sew for myself 1920s - 1970ss for myself. I have about 450 Factory Fold patterns that date back to 1875-1960s. I wear all my vintage makes every chance I get; especially on vacations outside of the USA. I am interested in Japanese patterns in casual designs.
Hi Dear, thanks for sharing this with us, I am French and knew 2 of the designers you mentioned (Maison Fauve and les lubies de Cadia). I would recommend also the following one: Atelier Bernie, Bélène Paris (pattern also in english), Atelier des premières, lefoudecoudre (male designer - patterns for male so), methode mathilde and barapatron (this is an unsual one as with this brand you are able to create a pattern based on your own measurment - not yet tested though but will surely test it in future as I love the idea)
Steph, theses designers are phenomenal. The attention to detail each one has in their patterns is so beautiful. You’ve definitely opened my eyes up to some incredible new possibilities. Thank you for sharing!
This was great Steph 😍 Would love to see you do a part 2 and even beyond - there will of course be other wonderful designers out there in non-English languages, would love to see what you would come up with! Something I’ve always noticed and wondered about is the plethora of really unique and beautiful clothes for sale on Etsy that are designed and made by designers in Eastern European countries like Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and others. And people from these countries so often speak English that I wonder now if they might also have patterns available not only in their native tongue but maybe even translated? Could be worth a look! Also - that check fabric for the cape? Chef’s kiss 🤌🏻 And with so many colours in the check I imagine it being fairly versatile too.
I love French patterns, it’s a great way to practice language skills. Some other designers I enjoy are Étoffe Malicieuse (lingerie) and Just Patterns. So glad your vid popped up in my feed, I love your taste! ❤
I have a few of Cadia’s patterns on my radar. Thanks for sharing new to me pattern makers! That plaid fabric would make a gorgeous cape! I hope it’s a good choice. Re the Hussard Jeans, I share the concern about that curved yoke. It is a nice touch tho.
I didn't know these creators but I loved many of their patterns, I recommend atelier des premiere and belene paris, they have a variety and patterns in English.
Thank you for this. I want to support more indie brands. However, I'm very selective because they're more expensive. I try to choose styles I can't find in more mainstream brands.
Great video Steph! You should have seen me jumping from my cell phone to follow them on Instagram to these designer links while at the same time listening to your reviews. I am very inspired! It's my guess that all these style lines, pleats, interesting shoulders are most flattering to the generally slimmer population of French women. Little did they know there is a hungry market for them here in America too ha ha! I have always wanted to try some of the German patterns but am hesitant to spend my money - I would eat up a German Pattern Edit if you did one. Thanks!
Where have you been ll my sewing journey !!! So glad I ve found your channel, Can't wait to see what you will do with the cape and the pants !!! If you do à sewing along..I ll try to sew them too (no pressure 😂)
Thank you so much for all your hard work and research! I particularly LOVE the patterns by Atelier 8 and Maison Fauve. I've been living in France for over 20 years and had no idea about these pattern designers. I'm excited to try the dress (Atelier 8) Place des Arts and the jumpsuit from Maison Fauve. You've put some air under my wings. I've been wanting to make my own wardrobe for quite a while, but had no idea where to start. So THANK YOU!
The Hunan jacket with the shoulder-y bit is 💯 giving Jedi vibes and I 💯 love it and want to make it (but it doesn't come in my size 😢). I laughed out loud and startled my sleeping dogs when you speculated whether the back of the jeans would be gentle contouring or a 🔍. 😂
I have sewn a couple of French patterns and have loved their additional details and unusual style lines. Thanks for the video, you've given some new names for me to explore.
Just found you and clicked the subscribe button. Thank you for this informative and authentic video. I’m German and my experience with French patterns is, that one has to think two sizes below your normal size. Often the bends are to feminine means soft for me.
I recently found out about Maison Fauve and I love their designs. I also really liked the top stitched darts and bought the Pilar Jacket, which has them at the neckline. Nice and fun details!
Great video! I'm French living in Australia so I keep my eye on both english and french patterns, though I tend to sew more english patterns - I find that the french style is too fancy for me haha. Have you looked at Make my Lemonade patterns? There are so many! Atelier Bernie and Belene Paris seem to be all the rage with the french sewing community! I'm really curious about other non-english designers. I can imagine Italian or Norwegian designs being very different.
This was so interesting and inspiring! I loved the detail in each piece. It just raises the bar. Maybe it’s time for me to venture out of my safe sewing 😊
Thanks for the lovely patterns. I had not heard about some of these brands before. Some pattern companies make a lot of shapeless sacklike dresses, which do not suit me, since I’m already short and round. 😅. I need structure.
Hi Steph. I’m new to your channel. I enjoyed your video about French pattern designers. I know Maison Fauve and Cadia but not the others so thanks for highlighting them. Diana
I really enjoyed this video. I have just made the Maison Fauve Zenith blouse in a white embroidered voile and it is a beauty that really shows off the sunburst darts around the neck. Next on my list is their Salto top. They have some really lovely patterns.
Ooh, the "jedi jacket" (we just rebranded it) looks so cool. I really want to make it now. I made the Maison Fauve Pilar jacket last year, and it was one of my favourite makes of 2023.
You're chanel is great!! I'll be getting back to you as soon as I investigate all these great resources. But, I really liked Atelier 8 Avril at first glance Thank you so much
I love these suggestions! What a wonderful video :). I also love the shirt that you're wearing! Did you make it and if so, can you share the pattern? :)
Thanks for sharing, I've never heard of any of these designers! I love the French aesthetic. I recently stumbled upon Apolline patterns. I haven't made anything from them but I have my eye on the Manarola dress. Some if not all patterns are also available in English and go up to a French size 48.
Love these, adding to my wish list! I have just received some patterns from French Poetry, which will be my first French Indie designer patterns to sew with. English instructions and videos.
Thank you so much for sharing these brands. I usually end up shopping the big 4 patterns on sale because most Indy brands release such basic patterns for astronomical prices. I am always looking for a fashionable pattern with a new technique that keeps me interested in sewing. The Oxana pattern at les lubies de cadia checks off all thos boxes for me. Merci et au revoir!
Now you’re giving me motivation to finish the dreaded purple jumpsuit. You could actually work your way around Europe: Italy, Spain+Portugal, Scandinavia, the Baltics, Eastern Europe?, Germany/Austria/Switzerland…
Thankyou for this, introducing us to brands that have interesting unique details. I like the leslubesdecardia patterns and want to make the jacket you highlighted. I do have a couple of maison fauve pattens the Chelsea blouse, and the salto top which I want to make up.
I love the cape but I have so many jackets already :( I've been wanting some trouser shorts for dance, so I might make the Olek shorts from Les Lubies if I can add a half-elastic waistband.
I just stumbled upon your channel. What a 😊 delight. I also love the European pattern companies. I know the last two of your choices. Have you heard of Apolline Patterns and Joli Lab? Two of my favourites. As a German living in Canada, I also like some of the German pattern companies 😊. Schnittmuster Berlin is one of them.
Please make the cape in the check fabric because there is a time to break the rule of versatility. This cape + your happy tweed is that occasion. Because it is such a distinct, fairly unusual cold weather topper, a one of a kind piece such as you envision would make you happy and proud. And because you have the neutral bottom rule, it will go with those pieces.
Some great information on French sewing designers. I’ve heard of a few but never tried them … yet. That cape fabric was perfect and exactly what I was imagining when I saw the pattern. Would it be possible to create a reversible cape using that fabulous check on one side and a plain on the other side? Might make it too thick and not sufficiently drapey though. Just a thought.
Living in Quebec I can attest that most French Canadian people are quite short and have very petite bone structures with narrow shoulders and hips compared to the rest of the Canadian population. Being a Quebecois import I always feel huge next to everyone around me, and resort to making my own clothes in order to wear things that actually fit me. To be clear I am 5'5" and wear a 36" bust, and I cannot find clothing off the rack, because I am too large compared to the rest of the population.
That is fascinating, and also must be frustrating! Whenever I visit Paris or elsewhere in France, I definitely notice that people seem both smaller and shorter as well. And then if I'm in say, Sweden, suddenly I am the shortest person in the room 😂
@@StephSewnit’s a thing!😅 going from average height to smaller or taller than the average in a region can be quite jarring. In terms of fashion, for practical purposes, I look to Spain, Italy and even south of France for fashion inspo, because the body shapes are more similar to mine despite living in Northern Europe.
Hello Steph ! Thanks for sharing the different designers ! Hope you don't mind me commenting, but I would like to let you know about my own brand, also French, called Ose Patterns ("ose" means "being bold" in French). To tell you about my background, I changed my career to study at a fashion school and in a maison for two years. I learnt pattern making with the draping technique so this is how I create my designs. One of the patterns that encapsulates my aesthetics the most is the DELANO dress, with its statement sleeves. My patterns, instructions, videos are in English (and French obviously). Happy summertime !
@@osepatterns hello!! I don't mind you commenting at all and am so glad you flagged your brand to me! I've pinned this comment for others to see, and will definitely add you to the list for future roundups. Off to check out your patterns now 💕
At least once in every video you will make me laugh. Like tap to go back 10 seconds to laugh again type stuff. With your skills, perspective, and personality, you should have a lot more followers than you do. Hopefully soon. Keep up the great work. Looking forward to your French inspired makes.

I'm so glad you enjoyed it, and thanks for the suggestion ☺️
Where have you been ll my sewing journey !!! So glad I ve found your channel,
Can't wait to see what you will do with the cape and the pants !!!
I really enjoyed the round up and look forward to exploring these pattern designers. Thank you for sharing all your research!
You are so welcome!
Another awesome video, thanks Steph! Will definitely be checking out these gems! thanks for sharing 😊
Amazing comments.if you are faching sewing pattern making problem. just scarch in google " pattren139 "
I have sewn a couple of French patterns and have loved their additional details and unusual style lines. Thanks for the video, you've given some new names for me to explore.
Hi Steph ! Thank you for this video. I think you should have a look at my two fav French patterns makers : Deer and Doe and Ready to sew !
Thank you, Steph! This is my first time seeing one of your videos! :)
Amazing comments.if you are faching sewing pattern making problem. just scarch in google " pattren139 "
Just found you and clicked the subscribe button. Thank you for this informative and authentic video. I’m German and my experience with French patterns is, that one has to think two sizes below your normal size.
Often the bends are to feminine means soft for me.
oh! Thanks for this tip!
I recently found out about Maison Fauve and I love their designs. I also really liked the top stitched darts and bought the Pilar Jacket, which has them at the neckline. Nice and fun details!
Thank you Steph, you have piqued my interest, especially the Madison Fauve. I love your video style!
Thanks for sharing! I know MML fabrics, but haven't checked out their patterns yet ☺️
This was so interesting and inspiring! I loved the detail in each piece. It just raises the bar. Maybe it’s time for me to venture out of my safe sewing 😊
Totally agree! I love that they are taking more risks with their designs.
Thanks for the lovely patterns. I had not heard about some of these brands before. Some pattern companies make a lot of shapeless sacklike dresses, which do not suit me, since I’m already short and round. 😅. I need structure.
I am in the same boat. And if I see one more gathered tiered tunic...
I really enjoyed this, I thought it was a bit different! Who doesn’t love to look at new pattern designers!! Thank you 😊
I'm so glad!
White is such a good choice for a blouse with those details!
But, I really liked Atelier 8 Avril at first glance Thank you so much
Thanks for the great new pattern companies. I have done a few of Maison's patterns and love love love them so can't wait to try the other ones
I'm so glad to hear this- I'm definitely going to be purchasing some!
Thank you for sharing!
That was so useful yet entertaining! Thanks for the great vid
Glad you enjoyed it!
I love these suggestions! What a wonderful video :).
I also love the shirt that you're wearing! Did you make it and if so, can you share the pattern? :)
Thanks for the video. I love your suggestions. What pattern are you wearing?
Thanks for sharing, I've never heard of any of these designers! I love the French aesthetic. I recently stumbled upon Apolline patterns. I haven't made anything from them but I have my eye on the Manarola dress. Some if not all patterns are also available in English and go up to a French size 48.
Thanks for sharing! I really like her work as well ❤️
Apolline patterns has my heart 😍
Love these, adding to my wish list! I have just received some patterns from French Poetry, which will be my first French Indie designer patterns to sew with. English instructions and videos.
I really love French Poetry. Made her Pleiades dress over lockdown and it's still a fave 💕
@@StephSewn awesome! I got the Pleiades 1 and 2, so I can see lots of hacks in my future😊
Yay so happy to hear it was useful!!
Some interesting shapes!
So glad it was useful! Definitely report back on your experience with the Maison Fauve patterns ☺️
I got that beautiful Maison Fauve free blouse after seeing all the great makes on Instagram
Hooray!! Hope you enjoy it.
I love the cape but I have so many jackets already :( I've been wanting some trouser shorts for dance, so I might make the Olek shorts from Les Lubies if I can add a half-elastic waistband.
I love those shorts as well! But London is already getting chilly 🤦🏾♀️
I have heard of Apolline but not the German brand! Sounds like I need to do a German pattern investigation 😍
Whoa that is SUCH a cool idea! The check is actually pretty lightweight, so if I got a black wool flannel I think I would work.
@@StephSewn oh great. I’d love to see your final creation. Good luck. 🤞🏻
I loved this video and your channel. ❤😊
Thank you so much!!
really enjoyed the video! I was wandering, how did you find the designers?
Thank you! I usually follow/search sewing pattern related hashtags in a few languages and then see what comes up.
@@StephSewn Cool!
Thank you 💜🇨🇦
In the 70"s I had a similar camel wool cape
this is so amazing, what about Italy?
I will try and search Italian patterns next!
Off to check out your patterns now 💕
@@StephSewn Thanks a lot Steph ! I was so pleased yesterday that you noticed the brown DELANO dress ! Have a good day !
Interesting video, thank you. Atelier Scammit is another French company.
I will check them out next!
@@StephSewn They have my favourite jeans pattern - the California Pants. I think they would look great on you. 😊
If you have capacity to spotlight some Japanese designers, I would love that!
Yes! I am working on that and can't wait to share.
Do any of these designers do menswear patterns? 🧐
Hmm good question! I'll have a dig.
At least once in every video you will make me laugh. Like tap to go back 10 seconds to laugh again type stuff. With your skills, perspective, and personality, you should have a lot more followers than you do. Hopefully soon. Keep up the great work. Looking forward to your French inspired makes.
Thank you so much!
Oh wow! New subscriber here! This is EXACTLY what I was looking for. 🥰
