- "The Carnival Is Over." Just the title conjures a bittersweet pang, a memory of childhood wonder fading into the dusk. And hearing Judith Durham's voice soar through that 1968 BBC Special performance is like stepping right back into that twilight moment.
The Seekers, bathed in the warm glow of the studio lights, weave their magic. Athol Guy's Double Bass plucks a gentle melody, Keith Potger's bass thrums a steady heartbeat, and Bruce Woodley's guitar adds a touch of melancholic shimmer. But it's Judith, her eyes shining with unshed tears, who truly owns the stage.
Her voice, clear as a mountain stream, carries the weight of a thousand goodbyes. Each note hangs in the air, heavy with the bittersweet knowledge that every joy must eventually fade. Yet, there's a quiet strength in her delivery, a gentle acceptance of life's inevitable cycles.
The lyrics, simple yet profound, paint a vivid picture of a carnival packing up, its laughter replaced by the rustle of packing canvas and the creak of departing wagons. It's a metaphor for life itself, reminding us that nothing lasts forever, and that even the brightest moments must eventually give way to the shadows.
But even in its sadness, "The Carnival Is Over" holds a strange beauty. It's a lament for lost innocence, yes, but also a celebration of the memories we carry with us. The song reminds us to cherish the fleeting moments of joy, for they are the threads that weave the tapestry of our lives.
And as the final notes fade, leaving only the echo of applause, we're left with a bittersweet ache, a longing for the carnival's return. But we also know, deep down, that the true carnival lives on within us, in the memories we hold dear and the laughter that still rings in our hearts.
So, thank you, Seekers, for that poignant reminder. Thank you for capturing the bittersweet beauty of life in a song that still resonates decades later. "The Carnival Is Over" may mark the end of the merrymaking, but it also leaves us with a profound appreciation for the precious gift of time we've been given. And that, I believe, is the truest magic of all.
❤️ it sure is 😢
Judith, one of the best voices in musical history
She was the best
Truly one of the best female vocalist ever - thanks Judith ❤
My top 4 female singers , Deborah Harry , Karen Carpenter , Judith Durham and Agnetha Faltskog.
@@mrbojangles977 … hmm Frida was a better singer, voice user then agneta… but peace whit that…
@@BertMerlin57 I wasn't comparing frida against agnetha i was stating my personal choice of female singers mate..
It was all about music with them. No gimmicks, scant cladding, nor prancing all over the stage. The vocals and harmony were as good as it gets. The accompaniment was acoustic and simple. A truly great group and I experience a great deal of nostalgia when I listen to their music.
You got it
Perfect harmonic......wonderful to hear and listen to
Nice
Can't you here and see the orchestra behind them 😅😅😅😅
I grew up with theses songs. Still love them

beautiful girl with the voice of an angel RIP Judith.
Judith's voice - pure and beautiful.
Voice of an angel. To paraphrase the words of another Seekers song, "there will never be another you". RIP, Judith.
I just loved Judith's voice. Crystal clear and as pure as a mountain stream.❤
You could really see the sadness in Athol's face. He is heartbroken. I remember watching this on TV in Australia but was too young to understand what was happening. Thank you The Seekers for all of your great and wholesome music.
I’ve just watched this in Jan 2025 with tears running down my face.
Crying now hearing this
Beautiful souls ❤❤❤

George Jones(country singer)once said in a song,(The world is full of singers but only a few are chosen to tear your heart out), this lady sure does.
This was number one in the British charts on the date I was born, and it will be apt to have it at my funeral...means so much. The family have been told!!!!!
Judith had the most amazing voice - pure, emotional, pitch perfect. And she was gorgeous!
And great to hear Athol Guy at the start!
Her voice will thrill over the ages. What a memory she evokes.
The seekers music will live forever.
This song was played at my Father's funeral, 15 years ago! 😥😥😥😥
THANK YOU, Judith Durham- may you RIP
Perfect
This song will never be over . . ..
Sounds like angels singing!
If you think that's angels singing you best get a hearing aid , I think they were boring to the extreme

I love the sound of Judith's Voice, it's iconic, just like the voice of Karen Carpenter R.I.P. Judith, 🥰💔❤
In 1965 I was 6 years old, I fell in love for the first time. That sweet, clear voice, angelic face with long hair swept to one side captivated a young boy completely. Such happy memories of a bygone age.
Hey Kevin I was 9 in 1965, my dad loved this song. Judith and Karen Carpenter the greatest femaile vocalists of all time.

the voice of my life..over multiple continents the Seekers helped me feel at home..unless you have been alone overseas.. it would not resonate.. i am 67 now.. must be close to 60 years.. back in Australia now.. the gift that keeps on giving.. thank you....💝
I was 8 years old. Remembering very clearly hearing it for the first time. She was so classy, and the french words captivated me. Days when Ireland was a very closed country. Every time I hear this, I am right back to being aged 8.
I had a massive crush on Judy Durham.❤️
Join the club!
Who didn’t 😂😂😂😂😂
You weren't the only one
Spellblindingly enchanting.
R.I.P Judith 🙏🏼♥️🏴
This song still makes me cry. So sad. I have lived a long life, and love this always.
Thank you so much Roy for the beautiful words in the description. I've known The Seekers, and their music all my life...just 13 when they sang this farewell. You brought a tear to my eye. 😢 ❤
And mine x
God bless you Judith who I think is the greatest voice of all time! of course the band blending with her made them the super band that they were

Just love listening to The Seekers even after all these years ❤
I love Morning Town Ride, it reminds me of opening my presents one Christmas morning probably mid 60s and it was playing on the radio. I’ve learned the words again ready to sing to my first grandchild due this year ❤
That voice....
No prancing about in scanty clothing..no autotune
Beautiful song, incredible voice, brings tears to the eyes.
What a voice, what talent, WOW!!!
I count myself lucky to have heard them from the start of their phenomenal career.
Thank God the carnival was not over. They were to continue delighting us for another 50+ years lead by Judith's unique voice. In later years she was not as good as her younger self but she was so good that, even so, she was streets ahead of most other voices.
Love their music.
Rest in peace Judith thank you so very much for the wonderful gift you gave the whole world Australia will love you forever ther will never be another voice like yours 💗💗💗💗
Beautiful Face ... Full of Grace And Voice to match ... Classy Band !!
Omg. What memories. Amazing.
Thanks for your thoughtful notes Roy. Agree 100%. Can't recall a better narrative to accompany a video on TH-cam.
There will never be another Seekers.
Great song.
Beautiful
אישה עם קול כזה צריכה לחיות לנצח
Leurs voix sont magnifiques. Super. Î love it
R.I.P Judith
Only one way to describe the Seekers the greatest vocal group to come out of Australia our fit to the world 💕💕
Her voice 🎉🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤..
The Seekers represent the optimistic edge of the sixties. Their breakup reflects the loss of that ideal.
Thank you The Seekers Thank you Judith Durham thank you Roy for your beautiful words. How this song resonates with me down the years xxx
Absolutely superb !!!
Wonderful video I love ❤️ it I rember it being nu 1 in UK 🇬🇧 😀 I had to run 🏃♂️ 😀 home from school 🏫 to hear it❤
A truly arresting voice. It was hard for people to hear a Seekers song on a radio, in a multi-act show and not wonder WHO that young small woman was. The tone, the crystal & long held notes and a sense she was singing from her heart. They aren't that common. Karen Carpenter. Dusty Springfield. Patty Smythe, The tragic Sinead O'Connor, Dolores O'Riordan of the Cranberries. Whitney Houston. . . And don't hate me....Miley Cyrus. Others, but those come to mind..Female soloists that drive the populations in multiple countries after hearing a bit of heaven brought to earth - become fans. To seek through their music - you and them chasing other bits of heaven.
What a voice
What a group
❤
Its just the most beautiful thing ive ever listened too 🎉
voice of an angel
She can sing to me anytime, feels so good.

Awww.....Meine super talentvoller Freunde aus Österreich. Werde euch jede wirklich in meibem Leben sehen?
That was the biggest mistake she did in her career but saying that she was amazing. The whole band was still today. People watch her videos on TH-cam and listen to the boys play their guitars and sing with her.
Can't remember for sure which High school music teacher taught us Seekers songs. Either Miss Pam Houghton, Or mebbe Helen Newtton
Sublime.❤
To the rubbish that calls it self music today watch listen and learn RIP JUDITH ❤
So many comments on who were the great female voices of popular songs. Here’s my list of the top (not in order): Marnie Nixon, Judith Durham, Julie Andrews, Shirley Jones.
Sadler missed such talent.
Colour TV transmission wasn't introduced in the UK till July '67 on BBC2. This was televised in black & white.
To colourise tv transmission is difficult, much more than film. Film can be upscaled to 4K, which enhances the visual experience immeasurably.
Thanks for the comment - check out the superior colourisation of LOST IN SPACE (film) compared to VHS Video ..... sorry no sound due to copyright th-cam.com/video/00OLIpFxb80/w-d-xo.html
The blurb says it was 1968 so colour was available
Broadcast and recorded are two different things. The BBC where recording things in colour before everything was broadcast in colour. A similar thing later happened with stereo.

There is a lot of history to this group.
She was very young when the group set off on a cruise ship initially for 6 weeks, which turned into much longer. They found success….but, She eventually got married and I suspect husband was not comfortable with her being in this situation.. so she left the group…, Judith and hubby produced music, but he became ill with something. He sadly passed, and some time afterwards she resumed recording and performing with the group until she had a serious car accident & subsequent stroke.
I have a gut feeling that Athol loved her… might be wrong… but whatever… her pitch perfect voice, their music, was divine.
I always remember the black & white film Georgy Girl with Lynne Redgrave…James mason and Alan bates…
Fond memories.
No effort required she sang like an angle
He was a great singer R I P
There was a video of them years later when they were much older singing together
It was the last song on the fairground before they left to go to a new town
