Too unconditional to his aesthetic to be thought of as a traditional bassist. Sluffed the 1 to the 2 too much for that. Playing mostly second and third octaves. Inventive? Oh hell to the yes! But definitely non traditional bass. No more than Bobby played “normal” rhythm.
Underrated by those who don’t understand talent so well. Phil can play. Very Well. 🎉 was at the Friday night Watkins Glen sound check. His wharf rat intro shook the ground. 😂. Imo his approach ( well known to be steeped in jazz) is like a big band backing up a soloist. Listen to early Count Basie behind Lester Young. Swing.
Oh all the players in the GD story, I think Phil gets the award for never playing it the same way twice. There really aren't any GD bass lines in the traditional sense (sans Fire, Dark Star and a few others) - he just plays what he feels is right for the moment. Genius and impossible to copy.
I've always loved his playing but I've learned to appreciate it even more by listening to this track in particular and trying (and I do mean "trying"!) to play simple rhythm guitar along with it. He rarely comes down directly on the beat, so I find myself playing along with him and losing track of where I actually am in the basic rhythm of the song. A great exercise in locking in on the beat without having to think about it! Also - in the first chorus he hits a clam in the walk up from C to D and it doesn't phase him. When a f'up live it usually throws me off my game for at least a beat (or a measure) or two. You can hear Garcia and Weir occasionally do the same thing when you listen to their isolated tracks. It's one thing to listen to a well rehearsed band (that never deviates from the script) play perfectly without ever mssing a note. It's another thing entirely to hear musicians like these guys just play and make great music like this without robotically playing a note for note, beat for beat, well rehearsed version, and keep right on creating the magic when someone does an 'oopsie'. I seldom notice it when I'm listening to whole band and being completely captured by the music. Even when I do it's still magic.
Hey now ! This is just beautiful ! Phil is killing it, He’s all over the fret board ! These are not basic Bass Lines he’s playing Lead Lines and highlighting the Chord Tones. Phil is way underrated and should be recognized as One of the Best Rock and Roll Bass Players!! Peace ☮ from Hawaii 🌺🏄🎸🤙🏝🍄🐠🐬🍺🎸
You gotta hand it to Phil for making the bass sound so interesting and joyful. This is very simple song in terms of chords -- G, C, Am, D. I don't know all the technical terms in terms of music theory of what he's doing, but it's clear he's developed a unique artistic style. He makes you want to learn bass, doesn't he? I've always thought Phil was second only to Jerry in making the Dead sound, which I've listened to my entire life and still love.
No man will teach other bass players how to dance around in octaves better than Phil. Those notes he finds in those octaves, rarely if ever the same way twice... You can hate GD, or hell, jam music in general. But can you make thousands dance in the octaves with you?
The Most Highly Underrated Bassist in Rock n Roll !! 🎶

does he change up a bit once Jerry starts soloing?
@@gabrielortiz4921 I listened for that but didn't detect big change.

My Thoughts EXACTLY Brother 👍👍👍👍
@@Fictius Right on Man ! They were a special band to see live and left a full 30 year catalog of music to listen to ☮
Love how he varies things up and uses all the registers of the instrument. Truly brilliant!
I love you Phil, solid ground.
Thank you for putting this up. Instructional and a pleasure to listen to.
Bass Great! Lesh Philling

Phil has been my favorite musician for decades, yet I'm surprised by what I hear in this isolated track - both the good and the sloppy.
😳😳😳🔥🔥🔥
The best!! GOAT
This is great! Please more!
The GOAT!
RIP Phil Lesh.
The mark of a truly all-time great artist can easily be measured by how impossible they are to copy. Who embodies that in music more than Phil Lesh?
RIP PHIL
This is fun to listen to. Some tasty ear candy 👂🏽🍭

Hi. What is the brand of strings that Phil was using? Thanks
i think he used pyramid gold, they’re kinda expensive
plays bass like a lead guitar
Pretty good at 3:14
2:14 Phil wrong note
It happens when you actually take chances
Still got it 99.9999% right...
He's the King of making wrong notes sound right though
Always nice to know a pro can do it!
Not a ton of notes but really bad ass.
boy this just doesnt groove at all
Wait until you here any other bass player. You're going to be severely disappointed. Phil is one of the grooviest to ever do it.
Think they might’ve been kidding what a groove
So good
