Eyes of the World jams are the best Dead jams ever. Those gigs in early 1973 stand out. Jerry and Keith are really working great together and you can hear the excitement in Phil's playing too. He had gotten VERY tired of the cowboy songs and loved the jazzy bits.
I have listened to 2-15-73 hundreds of times since I discovered it in 1987. I love every note of this Phil solo, and when Garcia comes in, it’s one of my single favorite Grateful Dead live musical moments.
Every member of the band was a part of the whole but it was truly Phil Lesh who was the ''weird'' of The Grateful Dead. Without him it just wouldn't have sounded the way it did.
10-25-2024, 1:31 West coast time.. fare thee well, 🎸🔥👂💓… Heart of gold band.. off to the big Terrapin Station in the sky… larger VIBRATIONS… Peace and love to all….❤❤
I love how the separate strings were mixed left and right in the first '73 solo. That must have been the Big Brown bass. It must have been other worldly to hear all that coming out of the Wall of Sound.
The best thing about Phil is that he’s still at it, having fun, enjoying playing, and making people happy. Amazing guy who is loved by a countless multitude.
We all definitely go through Jerry phases. I absolutely have my Weir phases. My Lesh/Billy phases are so very frequent. Phil is such complementary member. I’ve recently been going to the last of the opening’92 shows (2/21?) The first performance of Corina is just Phill going absolute bonkers. With good playback equipment it just knocks your socks off. In Phill we trust
As an aspiring Bassist for 6 years, its not that Phil had the virtuoso skills of say Wooten. But he had a method of minimizing exactly what he wanted. I'll never have the skills of Geddy Lee because I'll never ever be that dexterous. But ill never be as good as Phil because he's a Mad Genius. 😠 😃
He played delicate and melodic or launched 💣. Sometimes it seemed as if he was stalking the band with his thunder 💣's Other times he danced along with Jerry.
@@FerniFF so could it be a possibility that Phil started playing around with the quad in this time? I recall reading on Alembic forums that the quad pickup was ultimately scrapped, due to the complication in setup/reliability.
I think more Miles Davis - not as much show of technical ability as even some of the people under his employment throughout the years but sheer vision and note choice/improvisation ability (and composition) shine through in spite or because of that
Huge phil fan, never have enjoyed any of his solos, not because i thought they sucked, they were interesting.......to me they took away from his true strength which was being an ensemble player, a collaborator and foil in the band. With Bill in full swing, each limb dedicated to a different player, Phil could quickly jump from limb to limb, as it were to either compliment that player or run a counter to their line all while keeping it with in the context of where Jerry was going.. in one interview he admitted that rhythmically, he liked to screw around with the dancers. I can remembers shows where the6 had a oulse going, everyone is bouncing to it, doing their thing and suddenly just as we are settling in, like ok, this is the groove, phil would jump the pulse by an 1/8th, or intentionally fall back a 16th si he was now answering the pulse instead if being the pulse....it continues to shock me that he didnt stick his tongue out at the crowd during those moments teasingly as to say, “ha gotcha fuckers”. Ive always loved the almost samba way he travels thru chord changes, often hitting the next chord on the last 16th beat of 4, holding it over the bar but not hitting the first beat and instead responding to it an 1/8th or so later
May he fly peacefully into the cosmos.
Gone but will NEVER be forgotten.
❤Rest In Peace Phil ❤ Thank you for the music.
Godspeed and good journey, Phil Lesh.
RIP to the legend. We will miss you dearly
Dropping some love for Phil. He always had the best tie dyes of the band
he really did I loved his shirt with the dolphins on it
I remember reading somewhere that Bob and Jerry hated tie dye

Percussion style keyes Jer too hard tappers
One drummer period was always the loosest for me, too
I pretty much like everything…
2/9/73 was one of the first tapes I had and lived in my car for a long time.
When I die bury me deep
Put two speakers at my feet
Place the earphones on my head
And always play the Grateful Dead
RIP PHIL LESH ❤️💙💀
Godspeed Phil. 😪
@@timothymorris2128 Miss him so much already.
Daaang… bigger VIBRATIONS into the Universe

Thank you for posting this. Incredible stuff.
Gonna miss him. My favorite musician in the world

Right!? I think he was the 2nd oldest after Jerry. And he's still rocking out.
He was the oldest of the band. @@FerniFF
Still is! :)
Was….😢… damn righteous fellow, was a great human!!
Part of the heart of gold band
Bless his memory. 😢

Phil you made all of my trips beautiful and all my normal days awesome

He was extremely unique. It's always fun to listen to him no matter the song
His note choice and placement was brilliant and integral to The Dead's music, cerebral and far out at the same time.
He played delicate and melodic or launched 💣. Sometimes it seemed as if he was stalking the band with his thunder 💣's Other times he danced along with Jerry.

Pretty neat. We always shot for seats in the Philzone, but couldn't get there. Thanks for this, cat !

Standing on the 🌙
With
Jerry
The Eyes of the World of 2/9/73 has a great solo too
Requiescat in pace with Jerry and my cousin Kevin, the greatest brother I never had who introduced me to the Dead
RIP Phil Lesh.
RIP to this legend
It seems during the first solo, Phil engaged the quad pickup?
As in the Wall of Sound 4 Speaker Stack??
73 was Proto WoS. The complete WoS debuted 3/23/74

BASS GREAT!!!
Fare thee well... 😢

Good Bye My Old Friend.
I feel like Phil is the John Coltrane of bass players. Clearly talented, but relentlessly reaching.
Abso-flutely write

awesome write-up
Rip Phil 😢
The beyond just got a hell of a lot louder.❤❤⚡️💀⚡️
I lived watching the oscilloscopes when the bombs were dropping.
They didn't play Eyes on 2/27/77
2/26/77. My mistake
❤
He had a bass tone similar to Geezer Butler of Black Sabbath. Two totally different bands but two amazing bass players. Phil > Geezer in my opinion
Hi. Whats the brand of strings that Phil was using? Thanks
I want to say he said he used/uses half round strings.
Tell Jerry and Pig Pen I hello.
Well he wasn’t jako but who was?
@@andrewblack7852 What's the purpose of this comment exactly? That two different bass players from two different genres play differently?
Damn the 1st one just sounds like a guy playing by himself in the basement
Hi. Whats the amp and cabs that Lesh is using? Thanks
This isn't a question anyone can really answer. I mean in 1974 Phil had 4 x 30 foot tall coulumns of speakers with the Wall of Sound
