Really enjoyed this video! I replaced my X-T2 with an X-T5 6 months ago. Initially I set up the custom settings for Landscape, Wildlife, and Portraits, but didn’t give enough thought to what I should include. It was a bit frustrating. Plus, the “new” Fuji x app wasn’t working. So, I reset it to the default recently. I’ve assigned different functions to the buttons outlined in this great video. What a game changer accessing the D pad for turning on/off IS when hand held or on tripod. And, assigning the button in front for image review. I’ll revisit this video again to see if I should assign functions to other buttons. My little pea brain can only handle so many changes at one time! Oh, and after the reset the Fuji app transfers images to my phone now. Don’t use it a ton, but is nice when I’m traveling without my laptop. Thanks again!
The last one regarding the command dials is definitely as you say a pain, and now I know how I can get to it, with the C&T settings Great I don’t know or haven’t worked out why in the menu for command dial, it gives three settings for front and one for rear, I’m probably being thick, but it’s not logical and I don’t understand it!? Good if not fast tips, but I can look and pause again, loved the one you did With mr Gough in London and I do follow Roman! DG
wish lossless compression worked for me but for a while I edited on my iPad and it only supported uncompressed so I've been using it since. I should check now and see if that has changed.
They have shoot without card for at-the-store demo purposes. Customers like to handle cameras and shoot some sample photos and stores don't want to put random SD cards in their merchandise.
Maybe they had too many complaints that the camera is not working straight out of the box, so it was easier to set it up to shoot without card by default.
For release/focus priority, I do the opposite and always make sure to have it on release priority - I usually focus with the AF-ON button (X-T4) or AEL/AFL button (X100F) and the last thing I want is for the camera to decide that I can't take the photo just because it has changed its mind (or I shifted the view a bit) and now believes the subject is no longer in focus - not to forget those occasions when a slightly out-of-focus photo at the right moment is preferable to a perfectly sharp photo of whatever happened later. So while I disagree on the preferable setting, I agree completely that people should be aware of release/focus priority, and make sure it is set appropriately for their button setup and handling style.
Agree 💯 but only if you using back focus button if not then could be set for focus priority. Setting to release priority its even better if you shoot in burst mode as I notice that if using back focus button and your priority is focus its kind of confusing camera
THANK you! I've had the XT5 a couple of days and had worked out most things, but there were one or two I didn't know about, like using boost. Nicely and clearly presented. BTW I use that little top button thingy near the shutter to change metering mode.
I know this is an Old video, but as a studio photographer, and for event printing and presentation, three of your recommendations I don't use. (I agree with most) Sounds - I leave focus confirmation beep on, this is to aid with speed when time constrained to photo and when engaging with models when everything is framed etc. you know you have got focus without looking at screen again - keeping model focused on you not looking down etc. Focusing Light - Leave on for 2 reasons, shoot in studio in almost pitch black and try to focus without it (granted it may also come from using cameras with Contrast based Autofocus in the past, which can not focus in as low light as PD autofocus) and second reason is as as tally light for video so people know when the camera is rolling, or when self recording. Camera Backup settings - Normal mode is mirroring (data backed up to 2nd card) however, RAW on one card, JPEG on other I use during event photography (not weddings) as during the event instant prints are made from jpeg files and sold to clients (think similar to fair ground ride photos, they need to be ready by the time you leave the ride). having camera set to Raw on slot 1, jpeg on slot 2 allows you to remove the slot 2 card, hand to person working printer, place new card in slot 2 and continue shooting. This also works for events that want photos fast to put up on screen
Hi Gareth, I'm new to fuji. Haven't touched a camera for over 20 years! And when I did, it was auto all the way. I recently purchased an XT4 and realise I have lots to learn. I have really enjoyed your technical videos, but this one has been one of your best. Your tips have been so helpful. Thank you ever so much for all the work you put into your videos.
Hey thank you so much. That’s very nice to hear. Yes the further from auto you get the more you’ll learn. One you know how to (drive a manual car) you can then buy an automatic. Smash the histogram tho! So important. 😁
Xt4 is a fantastic camera. You won't regret it and it's future proof. First thing to do: READ THE MANUAL! The auto mode is the best there is to discover a new camera and get used to its overall functioning. Then go semi auto whether it's iso, SS or aperture priority, understand the jpegs, the raw, the relationship between settings and bit by bit you'll understand everything. One tip though: TAKE NOTES at every steps of your camera/photography discovery. It'll help you make correlations and help you remember every setting or technique and you can always go back to the notes in case you forgot something.
@@REMY.C. Thank you for words of wisdom. I do have a little black book where I am taking copious notes as I have graduated to using the triangle and the exposure compensation dial. So I am feeling so much more confident than I did many years ago shooting film on auto. Through this, I am discovering my particular aesthetic. I have a few favourite TH-cam presenters that I often watch, sometimes several times, and take a tonne of notes there too. I am truly indebted to people like Gareth. Thank you again for time and your advice.
@@rhondanadasdy7390 you're welcome. If you're looking to find your aesthetics, I have only one advice I always give: photography is about sight and you already have that sense, vision on the other hand takes training and time, just look at thousands and thousands of photos of the "masters" or very good photographers and your brain will start putting things together and you'll develop a taste for this or that style, even unconsciously. Copying is part of the process and it'll lead one day or another to finding the path to your own aesthetics. Also if you want to be the best of yourself, don't be of those who think they're born artists, be very hard on yourself and criticize every single photo you see and take. If you manage to do that, you'll be the best judge of your own work and the single photo you choose from the 10000 you shot will be the best and the one you'll be proud to show. Wish you a very happy photography journey.
Nice video. Lately I have had pre-AF on and find that I have more keepers in point and shoot scenarios. I turn the camera on just before I shoot and turn it off afterwards and find that the battery doesn’t appreciably drain.
Hi Gareth, I always have Pre-AF OFF, except when I'm doing wildlife photography where hunting for the subject with a lot of telephoto reach is a bit easier.
@@GarethDanks Very interesting. So I can hand the camera to my wife without having to explain how to focus... I'll play around with it. Thanks very much, sir!
Hi Gareth. I really enjoyed your presentation and am inspired to comment! Just setting up my XT5 in my very amateurish way, I've now watched several excellent TH-cam guides, all very illuminating, but strikingly different. One tells me that the Q menu is super-useful, while another never uses it! Several recommend saving data to RAW + JPEG, while you dismiss that as useless. I could perhaps produce several more examples, but I think much depends on whether you are appealing to a professional or (like me) a hobbyist. So far I've come across very little about the use of the custom settings (7 savings banks) - I seem to remember reading one review in which they were regarded as the best invention since sliced bread, but presumably those (like you) who omit them are not that keen on them. My main enthusiasm is as team manager of 20 cadet table tennis players, keen on having action shots taken - so, indoor light, fast action, hand held. I've done okay so far with XT2 and XT3, shutter speed around 1/500, 11 fps, enough keepers to do the job, all JPEGs, sequential. I mainly use the XF 50mm f2 lens; once got fine results with 90mm f2. Wondering whether to try the new 56 mm 1.2 or 33mm 1.4. But first I'll stick to 50mm and see how the XT5 performs, maybe trying RAW, but will the buffer cope?
An outstanding video. He moves fast but covers a great deal of information. Even if I don't mirror all his settings, it's good to know why he chooses what he chooses. It's also an extremely well-lit video so that one can clearly see all the buttons and menu choices he's talking about. Thanks
Hello Gareth. Greetings from Colorado. Thanks for all the great videos. You convinced me to buy the X100V, and I was lucky enough to find one at the first boutique camera shop that I searched for one in January. Love it! On the Nikon Z7ii there is a setting called exposure delay mode (max of 3 seconds), which I use instead of the timer for landscapes. I put it on my “i” menu, and it stays persistent from session to session even when turning the camera off and on. Maybe it is available on the Z7 also???
I think PRE-AF can be handy if you are looking for and view, and it automatically focuses on the spot you want it to focus, the one you set your focusing region (single point, zone, etc. area on the camera). Otherwise if I zoom it, everything is blurry and I need to press AF ON button or half press shutter button for it to focus, but with PRE-AF ON I don't need to press anything, since most of the time if the objects are clear, basically while it isn't a clear sky where camera can't understand it, then it will focus automatically on objects or the scene. So it is handy. Otherwise it's all blurry. The front right button near the lens that you had for playback, I changed it to Image Size, and left the playback to its original button, which is next to the trash bin button.
Reposting because it seems like it disappeared. A handy shortcut I always use is the long press 3 seconds on the recycle bin then just a click on the rear dial and it will take you straight to the FORMAT MENU where you'll see your card or cards. Way faster than going through menus. It works on many Fuji's.
I have an X-H2, I'm loving it generally, but the front and rear command dials no longer have a 'push' action. This really annoys me! I have years of muscle memory from X-T2, X-H1, X-E3 and X-T4 and find myself continually trying to press those dials for the functions I always used to set to that action on my previous Fuji cameras. It's been months now and I still get caught out every time I use the camera (especially as I still have the X-E3).
The lack of that button was a major reason why I didn’t consider it. I need an xh2 for a job I’m doing today but I use that on all my cameras all the time for checking focus. Such a silly move.
@@GarethDanks Moody weather Sunday and I've been out in City of London today for architecture shots. Cursed the loss of the command dial push buttons endless times when it caught me out! It's mechanical, so no firmware fix is possible. Like an amputee, when the limb is lost, but they still feel sensorly that it is still there. The X-H1 has push button command dials and the X-H2 is a linear upgrade. They should only add fundamental features, not remove or restrict them! No one ever complained about the extra feature of push button command dials on Fuji cameras. We all loved that extra function button configurability. A loyal Fujifilm user, I feel a bit mugged to be honest.
A setting I always enable is something like "don't delete files on the backup card when they're deleted on the main one". It avoids any mistake because when you delete files by pressing DELETE, it will only delete them from the main SD card and you won't even see them anymore by pressing play button but they'll still be there on the backup, lurking in the shadows. It's also very handy and sneaky if someone asks you to delete the picture so you can show that person that photos are gone*. *Well... From the main card only but that's our secret 😂
Ahhhh I like that..! I didn’t know you could do that. Yeah the playback of card 2 is frustrating. Also why it records video to card 2 by default too. I’ll look for that mate. Thanks 😁
Another great video Gareth. Could you please explain the natural live view feature a little more? I try to use the histogram while shooting but I didn’t quite understand this point and it’s use. Thanks.
Thanks sas. Yeah sure. It’s just a way of displaying a flat view more like what the raw would see. Instead of seeing a profile which would then effect your histogram. Like going from eterna to classic chrome.
Solid recommendations there G. Applies to cameras from many manufacturers. When you mentioned turning off the beeps it reminded me of a time on Skye where I was sharing a spot with someone who was shooting exposure bracketed, panorama, and on a timer.....beep, beep, beep, beep..........fecking beep! lol
Great review of these items Gareth. I'm wondering if you have a video or if you can point me to a good video you know of that really explains the Fuji app in simple terms. Have a great day!
I first learned taking photos in the late '70s. Yashica 1. Not much opportunities then because I was still in school. Picked up the bayer sensor xa5 again after 40 years. I'm learning a lot from you. Thanks for sharing. Am adjusting my expectations against the shortcomings of the xa5. But I'm happy with it. Hope you can point me to where I can get info specifically on the bayer. Cheerio from Malaysia. 🙂
Yeah well, my Yashica cloth shutter crapped out during a month long road trip Yellowstone National park. Should have stuck with an old leaf shutter camera.
Hello, I have a question! In the process of changing the menu settings, you can feel a little heat in the camera body within minutes. Is this normal? But I don't feel it when I take pictures.
Great video and thanks. Is there a way to Save all those settings and bring them back in case you get all lost and prefer resetting completely the camera then recall all those ? Cheers !
On the X100v, I have the joystick switched off so that I can’t accidentally move the focus point which taking images. Yeah, it means I have some difficulties but I’d rather get the shot than not.
I like to use any new Fuji camera for a while , then I’ll start to tweak things to suit how I like to use certain buttons. As you know I did have some issues with the cf express card and reader ( sorted now , I’ll tell you tomorrow) . Lots of useful info and tips in this video GA .
Great video thanks Gareth. I've watched a couple like this but many of your tips were new, and well worthwhile. I also liked how you didn't muck around explaining where to go - knew we could find out. Some of my preferences differ, but it's just how each individual shoots. I'd be interested to se how you set the camera up for colours, sharpness and exposure - I found I needed to tweak it a bit to get the look I wanted.
I use the front fn button for manual focus assist. Holding the button down lets you toggle through the mf assist options so it is like two shortcuts in one.
@@GarethDanks lately I've been shooting old and some modern manual focus lenses as well as I've resorted back to the legacy xf glass for my X-T5. I no longer shoot professionally so I want to enjoy the process when I go out. The LM lenses are great for professional work but they just turned me off from the enjoyment of making photographs.
Hi Garethm, X100V user here... It's really nice to see how different people customize their camera in their own way depending on their shooting type. I use the AEL/AFL one to lock exposure. The one next to the shutter release button on the top plate, to lock focus when using auto focus. The front one (inside the OVF and EVF switch) to cycle the different view modes while shooting, viewfinder...lcd...etc Holding the front switch to the right to toggle focus check. When in manual focus I press the rear dial for back button focusing. Front dial is useless for me. And in the Q menu I only use the custom settings, film simulation, Dynamic range, and face/eye detection. Touch screen always off unless in playback. hope my 2 cents help somebody :)
My XT-5 does not go straight to My Menu when pressing menu button. My XT-3 did. The XT-5 goes straight to the last menu. Hopefully an update will fix this.
"DONT CHIMP" -Then come to find out you put that PLAYBACK right on that front button lol. SO easy to chimp that way lol. Just kidding man, this video was great ! So many helpful tips and settings, just wanna say thank you for the vid, thanks for taking the time to share !
New subscriber from Canada, glad I found your channel, good stuff. Just sold my X-T3s and the replacement XH2&XT5 combo should be in this week, so this was really useful for the added menu hints and tips.
Gotta love Fuji's buisiness model, they seem to bring out new cameras far more regularly than other manufacturers, each one an 'improvement' on the last. Kerching£$€!
I agree mate. Tho I feel they’ve hit a wall now. The iso needs addressing (6400 is not 6400) and the af is still not good enough. I do love their cameras tho. The new lenses are amazing.
Thanks Gareth, a bloody brilliant tutorial, real arse covering ! It was with your encouragement in the reply’s that I got the X100v, and has worked out fantastically. A gem among TH-camrs !!
Your videos, but has anyone ever told you you have the same mannerisms out of that dude out of the office show. He just reminds me of you I know you don’t look anything like him but oh my gosh it makes me laugh anyway back to the school I think the reason the camera has shoot without lens is for cleaning the sensor. Would that be right?
Haha. Hilarious yeah I get that a bit. My mate thinks the same. And I’m an idiot off camera 😂 that mode is for vintage lenses and lenses like the Samyang 12mm mki without contacts. 😁👍🏻
@@GarethDanks Yes that’s right … now I remember because I have that adapter where you can use the Nikon lenses, and I use the vintage Nikon lens and initially it didn’t work, but then it did after changing that setting from memory. You could get a second job as an auctioneer, you go so fast!! Sheesh man.... Nah, I just bailed out on this video, because I couldn't keep up. Sorry.....
It is a shame. Sadly there were too many problems chasing people, language issues and people wanted free copies if they were featured. Brexit postage costs and problems and production prices were main factors too.
Fuji drives me crazy with their false and truly confusing nomenclature like the Eco / Normal/ Boost power mode. The so called boost is just the TRUE NORMAL mode in which AF works as it's programmed to do and the evf ovf have their native refresh rate, definition and luminosity. It's exactly like their crappy -5.0.+5 choices. The 0 doesn't necessarily mean "does nothing" like it should and it's not even consistent in all menus.
Just bought that X-T5.
It was interesting to see how you customize yours. Thank you. 🙂

@@GarethDanks I believe its more to do with the level of weather sealing they wanted to achieve with that body.
Thanks mate. No I don’t. And most hate the app as it’s sooooo unreliable! Tho initial impressions of the xt5 via the app are ok.
Apple Photos app does not support compressed RAW. What are you using if not Apple Photos?
Hello, I have a question! In the process of changing the menu settings, you can feel a little heat in the camera body within minutes. Is this normal? But I don't feel it when I take pictures.
im not sure mate.. i do notice heat sometimes but its never bothered me. def never caused a problem. thanks for the comment :-)
Please explain what back focus is… I’ve no idea what it is, thanks
Great video and thanks. Is there a way to Save all those settings and bring them back in case you get all lost and prefer resetting completely the camera then recall all those ? Cheers !
Yes!!! Actually there is! And I need to do this too! You can export them as a file. I’d have to google (manual) it tho sorry
On the X100v, I have the joystick switched off so that I can’t accidentally move the focus point which taking images. Yeah, it means I have some difficulties but I’d rather get the shot than not.
Hey mac. Don’t think I’ve ever knocked mine. I love them tho. Couldn’t be without
Focus lock and re-frame FTW! No need to select focus point with joystick.
I like to use any new Fuji camera for a while , then I’ll start to tweak things to suit how I like to use certain buttons. As you know I did have some issues with the cf express card and reader ( sorted now , I’ll tell you tomorrow) . Lots of useful info and tips in this video GA .
Thanks John mate. Be interested to know what you changed
X100v rules! 🥸🏴
Thanks!
I use the front fn button for manual focus assist. Holding the button down lets you toggle through the mf assist options so it is like two shortcuts in one.
Ah right! That is a good idea. What do you shoot then? And in mf I assume?
The front one (inside the OVF and EVF switch) to cycle the different view modes while shooting, viewfinder...lcd...etc
Holding the front switch to the right to toggle focus check.
No!!! I know!! I can’t believe this. Why do fuji change things for the worse. No back button dial and odd menu changes.
Thanks for the sub! You’ll love them! 😁
The new lenses are amazing indeed. What you mean about the iso not being right?
I happen to like the bep, but not the light
Thanks Gareth, a bloody brilliant tutorial, real arse covering !
It was with your encouragement in the reply’s that I got the X100v, and has worked out fantastically.
A gem among TH-camrs !!
The X-T3 loses the self timer mode when it powers down too, bloody annoying.
"shoot w/o card on" is for cameras lying in the shops, where people want to try.
yeah so they should have to turn it on.. not us turn it off
Your videos, but has anyone ever told you you have the same mannerisms out of that dude out of the office show.
Anyway, glad you took that in the right spirit it’s one of my favourite shows. We should do one called the photographer. It would be hilarious ha ha … Have a good day
Absolutely! He’s a hero. Especially since the golden globes speech 😂👏🏻
@@GarethDanks yeah 100% mate I watched a few more of your videos as well and I really like your style. I'm in Australian and the American guys just annoyed me because most of them shout when they're doing videos. Why did they shout when they are doing TH-cam videos we are sitting 2 inches from the screen ha ha
Perhaps YOU need to change these, however not everyone needs to 😎
Which is exactly what I said at the beginning of the video
@@GarethDanks I am referring to the title.
Ok.. sadly (and it pisses me off) everyone seems to be doing clickbait vids now. Annoyingly if your title doesn’t compete then you suffer big time. Hope it didn’t put you off watching
@@GarethDanks No worries, Just bustin' :)
You could get a second job as an auctioneer, you go so fast!! Sheesh man.... Nah, I just bailed out on this video, because I couldn't keep up. Sorry.....
Sorry for that. A lot to go through. Assumed people might pause if needed.
So is F8 magazine no longer a community based zine? Now it's just you and your stuff? Shame if it is as I loved the sentiment.
It is a shame. Sadly there were too many problems chasing people, language issues and people wanted free copies if they were featured. Brexit postage costs and problems and production prices were main factors too.
I think the fact you have to do all these things shows how flawed fuji cameras are. Returned my XT5 because the af is too unreliable.
Good review but can’t hardly understand you, ( fast/monotonous/indistinguishable sounds 🤯) hate having to read the transcription.
