  • Mark Rutte, who has been the Netherlands' Prime Minister since 2010, is set to take over as as Nato’s secretary general in October.
The current head, Jens Stoltenberg, will be stepping down on 1 October after holding the position for nearly a decade.
Rutte's support for Ukraine helped win him the favour of key Nato countries including the UK and the US.
On Thursday, his only opponent - Romanian President Klaus Iohannis - pulled out of the race.
Rutte is expected to be confirmed as Nato’s next secretary general over the next few days.

Just want to tell what a lot of Dutch people think of Rutte.
He has left the 🇳🇱behind in a complete disaster.
With his sweet smile, bike and apple, hi here and hi there and his smooth talks, he has fooled a lot of people.
Why do you think Wilders got lot of votes? Out of protest being sick of all the Liberal years under Rutte! His party lost the elections big time.
Rutte never had a vision, certainly not for longer time than just before and after the elections. He was even proud of it.
According to all the newspapers who are to lazy to look into things quoting stuff of Rutte his own party....
Rutte once said "No" to Trump visiting the WH😂😂😂 Trump didn't even notice. Check it!
Trump asked Rutte if he was gay because he never married.
Rutte denied that, just to busy working, he said.
I think that's a better qualification and he did a great job after MH17 the most important thing of his career, he said.
A lot of the Dutch people love 🇺🇦 which he supported because of MH17 too.
He went to the WH. Biden said than he would like Rutte to have the job and lateron the government collapsed.
After one year the excuses where a lie too.
But if someone is able to kiss asses, to get what he wants, it's him. 😅

How can people say Rutte did a good job on MH17? Didn't anyone in the Netherlands know that safety over ukrainian air space was the responsibility of ukraine and they could not not guarantee that over the rebel held areas? Four days before MH17 was shot down, the rebels shot down a ukrainian military cargo plane at 22000 feet, proving they had the capability of shooting down airliners at 37,000 feet. Ukraine knew it wasn't safe to fly over the rebel held areas but they did not close their airspace and that brought about the shooting down of MH17. Ukraine's criminal negligence in not closing their air space resulted in the loss of MH17.

A lot can be said about Mark Rutte as a person and as a PM. Positive and negative. He was PM during the financial crisis, the Euro crisis and during the corona pandemic. We came out at the other end pretty solid. With 15 political parties in our house of representatives and with 27 countries in the EU he knows how to build coalitions and consensus and knows how to get things done. Which is more than can be said for most PM's/Presidents in other countries over the past 15 years (especially in the UK). On defence spending: the Dutch population in half that of Poland and our GDP is 1.5 times that of Poland. The Netherlands now spends 2% of GDP on de defence. Poland would need to spend 3% of GDP to match that in absolute Euro/USD terms. Poland would need to spend 6% of GDP to do the same on a per capita basis

Nonsense. Rutte has always clearly said that Trump was right when he emphasized that member stated should meet their obligations. What foreign people don't seem to understand is the complex nature of Dutch politics. Rutte has been PM (not president) of four different coalition governments, consisting of 3 to 5 political parties with hugely different agenda's. His job was to keep the governments together and functioning, not to take final decisions on defense budgets etc.

The only reason why BBC gave such a negative viewpoint of Rutte, is cause Ben Wallace was denied the position, but that was cause USA wanted somebody in the EU to take over. not our call to be made, Ben Wallace was good too for NATO head. infact I wouldn't have mind at all if Ben Wallace was NATO head either, but Brexit threw a screw into that too.
And by the way, Netherlands already hit the 2% NATO spending this year, infact it set to surpass the 2% in the next year with CV-90 being made in the Netherlands as a joint venture with Sweden.

Wilders only won a plurality of seats, so he has to form a coalition first. That usually takes a long while in the Netherlands because there are so many different parties in their parliament, many of which are very uncomfortable with Wilders becoming PM. For the meantime, Rutte is still the acting PM and will remain until Wilders or someone else forms a new coalition and is appointed by the King.

    • @Joey-ct8bm
      @Joey-ct8bm 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

Probably around 5 weeks. Geert Wilders is not becoming PM. A coalition has been made and the VVD party from Rutte is also in the government. Dick Schoof is gonna be PM. He is ex MI6( called AIVD in my country) and has no affirmation with any of the coalition parties. A compromise between party's. Geert Wilders will never be president of my country. He's just too far right. Workcamps as prisons and that kind of stuff. His election program outside immigration is pretty crazy. Even using army on the streets and no right to a Lawler. Luckily other party's keep him in check.

    • @MTMF.london
