  • Testing the Hornady Critical Duty ammunition in 10mm and .357 Magnum through my 4" S&W revolvers (model 686 & 610) into a 10% Clear Ballistics gel test. The .357 Magnum is a 135 gr FTX bullet rated at 1,275 FPS through an 8" V barrel and the 10mm is a 175 gr FTX bullet rated at 1,160 FPS through a 5" barrel. Always appreciative of any channel help :) www.patreon.co...

    If anyone was curious, my 5.3" Glock 41 10mm conversion ran this 10mm ammo at 1,134 FPS. BTW I have noticed that people stopped complaining about my 10mm handgun malfunctions. It's almost as if the S&W 610 is more reliable than a Glock. Nah nah nah, "revolvers malfunction too and when they do, you are out of the fight, Glock 20's don't malfunction, but when they do just tap rack bang".

    I recently brought some of these in 357 mag and 45 acp. Got some in 40 s&w ordered.
    I think you could probably put the 357 mag version in a lever gun and go hunting with it. I know that's not the intent of the design but being a tough bullet like it is I would say it might do okay out of a rifle on a deer. I would prefer hardcast for a hog but it might still work for that too.

      Velocity change depends on overall casefill percentage. If you have 100% fill or even a compressed load, then a little bit of bullet creep will make significant pressure variation

      @@michaeldoe4805 That's what we were all told ! I guess the 610 didn't read the book . Not to get too far into the weeds , I don't think this round is 100% or compressed . If the ammo was hand loaded for a 4" barrel = faster powder , not a long barrel 8" or a rifle = slow powder Sam thinks is likely used in the 357 & 44 mag common loads . They might be more user friendly in a 4" . It looks like with mid range loads , seating depth may not be too much of an issue . Same with the Gap ! Not a Huge issue .

    I've tested .357, .45+, & both 9mm + loads. I think the .45 and 10mm Critical Duty are pretty good, the rest meh. As civilian I prefer HST, for Duty/Security Gold Dot, but Critical Duty is good if you carry a reload or extra in car if fmj isn't used. If I do carry a 3" .357 then I think the Critical Duty is a nice reload & goes into chambers smoothly for speedloader or strips. I Tested it vs old Underwood 125 Gold Dots from 3". I compared the two 9mm +ps both short & long barrels: one is better for pistols, one is better in longer PCC PDW type stuff IMO. Time for FBI to go back to 10mm 😊

    • @GunSam

      The Critical Duty .45 ACP is actually more powerful than the .357 Mag and 10mm Critical Duty. 503 ft lbs energy in my 5.3" Glock. The 10mm in the same Glock was 500 ft lbs energy.

  • @davefinfrock3324

    Couple of things. The two cartridges are roughly equivalent in ballistics, with the advantage going to the .357 because of case capacity. The main issue with 10mm in a revolver is the moon clips. These will always negatively affect trigger pull--it's going to be heavier just to ensure ignition with the clips. They will improve reload speed. That's a judgement call depending on what is important to you. I'm not a fan of moon clips. I learned my lesson with the S&W 625. Auto rim cases were far superior for any use other than action shooting. Somewhat ironically, I found half-moon clips more convenient for field use.

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I never noticed a trigger pull issue, in fact my 10mm here has a lighter and smoother trigger press than the 686.

    • @davefinfrock3324
      @davefinfrock3324 21 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      @@GunSam It's a matter of having to deal with the moon clip. All other things being equal, the clip will require more force to ensure reliable ignition. Individual guns vary a lot, but when it comes to trigger jobs this is something that has to be accounted for. My own 625 had a pretty good trigger, but it wasn't as good as any of my M57s.

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I have shot this model 610 with the moon clip VS my 686. Even brand new, the 610 has a lighter and smoother trigger than the 686 I been shooting for 7 years. There's no reason a moon clip would require more hammer strike force. With or without the moon clip in place, the primers sit at an identical distance from the breech face. The 610 is not cut for moon clips.

    • @davefinfrock3324
      @davefinfrock3324 20 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      @@GunSam There's every reason. The clip is spring steel. It flexes. They may or may not sit flat on the cylinder face. You need more force to ensure ignition. It's going to vary from gun to gun and even from clip to clip. It becomes really apparent when you get a bent clip.

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  21 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I don't mean to be rude, but your comment doesn't seem experience induced. Specifically with this ammo, it performed perfectly. With the hard lead alloy, more power would not have caused greater expansion, rather it would have made them over-penetrate. One might say, well then make the bullet less hard - but that would defeat the purpose of it being able to defeat hard barriers, hence the name "Critical Duty". At the end of the day, the power levels are spot on if you know why they need to be at the velocity they are at!

    • @nicholasroberts9618
      @nicholasroberts9618 21 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @GunSam I understand the purpose and in the extremely rare occasion LE will use them against hard barriers they definitely do well however, like all Critical Duty ammo, their expansion is literally the bare minimum on non handed targets and that's where almost every other JHP or SJHP out performs Critical Duty. It's also one of the reasons the majority of LE users dropped this ammo.
