  • Another installment of .32 H&R Mag VS .38 Special in snub nose revolvers and today I have the Buffalo Bore +P ammunition. The .38 Special is a 125 gr+P Gold Dot bullet rated at 1,072 FPS in a 2" barrel and the .32 H&R Mag is a 100 gr+P XTP bullet rated at 1,054 FPS in a 2" barrel. I am testing for actual velocity and accuracy and terminal ballistics with my Taurus 605 2" barrel for the .38 Special+P and the Ruger LCR 1.875" barrel for the .32 H&R Mag+P. Always appreciative of any channel help :) www.paypal.me/...

    I wanted to point out that Buffalo Bore says DO NOT use this .32 H&R Magnum+P ammo in any revolver that is an H&R BRAND revolver. This ammunition is safe for all other .32 H&R Magnum and .327 Federal Magnum chambered revolvers such as Charter Arms, S&W, Ruger or any other modern production .327 Federal Magnum or .32 H&R Magnum revolver.

      @@robertfarris9357 Actually the S&W long can be pretty effective. Remember it was the standard police caliber for many years. Do not expect jacketed bullets or hollow points to perform well at all though. You want lead (preferably soft) with flat nose. Wad cutters at the highest practical velocities and go for the vitals as always.

      It seems to me that given the effectiveness of buffalo bores 32 h&r +p and the fact that modern revolvers can handle it, there may not have been a need for federal to develop the 327 magnum after all. A +p saami spec for this round may have been enough to revive it as a good alternative for 38 spl +p

      The charter arms tech man, Nick, said you must not use any buffalo bore ammo in their .32 revolvers even tho the revolvers say magnum on them. Both BB .32 s&w long and BB .32 magnum jam tight in the cylinder after firing. So tight I need to pull them out with a wrench. But then Fiocchi .32 s&w long also jams just as tight in the Charter Arms.

      It would be nice. Definitely worth hand loading as actual material is low, less lead for bullets, less powder etc. Funny how factory ammo is more than others.

      It raised up a bit once Henry made the lever actions in the caliber. But then it kind of dropped back down. I think if companies would apply the typical benefits of a .32 to more revolvers they would rise up some. Like how in a 5 shot .38 you can hold 6, well now we got 7 and 8 shot .357's so why cant we get an 8 shot .32 or a 9 maybe even 10 shot one?
      I think my ultimate dream gun would be a Chiappa Rhino in .327 Federal Magnum. 7 shots in the Rhino would be perfect. Would be nice if they made a .44 Magnum Rhino too, as that could open the door to an 8 shot.

      @@elsullo2 There's a 4 barreled derringer in .32 H&R Magnum out there on the market or there was a proposed idea of one. Trying to remember who made it but think it was along a similar idea to one of those volley fire type guns, one pull fires 2 barrels kinda deal.
      I'd rather NAA revive the .32 NAA and bring it in a package like the SIG P365, that would be a serious contender.

      Thanks for watching! I have a good feeling about these .38 Special rounds as they seem perfect. I can't wait to test them in the 4" barrel as I have no doubt that 1,250 to 1,300 FPS+ will be what I see. I have never fired a .38 Special round that was within normal weight range (125 to 158 gr) that was also jacketed that was close to the 500 ft lbs range, any .38 Special+P rounds I have tested in that energy range were either so light they fragment and won't penetrate, or are pure lead and also fragment, or are hard cast and overpentrate. These 125 gr bullets should fix all of those issues. Out of the 4" barrel these 125 gr+P's will exceed the .357 Mag Gold Dot 135 gr in the 2" barrel by probably 75 ft lbs energy, so I am exited to see that test when I do it.

    Relatively new gun owner, here. When I bought the first guns of my current era (I had a rifle as a kid, but it got lost in one or another of my moves...), 9mm semi-autos seemed the easiest to acquire and feed. I have a few 9mm CZ products, and there's a P365XL in the arsenal, and an M&P Shield 9.
    My hands are fairly large, and the Sig doesn't feel right (too narrow). The only reason I still have the Shield 9 is that shortly after I bought it, the Shield Plus came on the market, and nobody wants the older one. I also keep it for its concealability, but I am not over-fond of the thing.
    Out of curiosity--and succumbing to the N+1 thing--I recently bought a CA Undercoverette in .32 H&R Magnum. My prior experience with a revolver was a S&W Airweight in .38, and the felt recoil was unpleasant. This .32 is really nice!
    Seeing the muzzle velocities from BB ammo out of a snubbie is astonishing. I don't have wherewithal to do the testing you and others do, so have to rely on watching a range of video feeds to choose my carry ammo.

    I was told to go with this caliber 5 years ago. It took time for the idea to sink in. Man, I am so glad I finally saw the light. No more bruised hand with .38s out of my airweight. Now I can shoot .32ACP, .32 Long, all day long at the range and then carry the Buf Bore Mag +P for SD. What a GREAT caliber. I just ordered the CT green laser for my Ruger 327, and cannot wait to add that feature. If you're on the fence, JUMP on this one.

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I lot of people will tell you that it shoots 5 cartridges, and this is in a sense true as people do it, but keep in mind that Ruger recommends the use of only .327 Federal Mag, .32 H&R Mag and .32 S&W Long from their .327 Federal revolvers because unlike the .327 Federal, .32 H&R Mag and .32 S&W Long that have a rim thickness of 5.5/100th of an inch, the .32 S&W(Short) and the .32 ACP have a rim thickness of 4.5/100th of an inch, so there will be more wobble room behind the rim against the frame, which _can_ cause the cartridge to jump back, essentially causing the firing pin to hit the primer harder, causing a pierced primer, also the .32 ACP is a bullet diameter of .3125" as where all the others are .3120". So the .32 S&W(short) and the .32 ACP while being compatible enough to usually get away with shooting them, are not _truly_ compatible. I would say that since .32 S&W Long is just as affordable as .32 ACP, that this is probably the better economy cartridge to run through it instead of .32 ACP. Thanks for watching!

      I honestly don't remember requests but I did see it online and decided to try it. If you requested it and I forgot I apologize, either way here it is! What I like with .32 H&R is the same thing I like with the .38 Special. If you noticed I used the .357 Magnum Taurus and .327 Magnum LCR as the way I see it, you can go as hot as you want with .32 H&R Mag+P and .38 Special+P and still be very far below what those revolvers are rated for. Ammunition companies might not all stick to SAAMI or CIP specs, but they have to at least try to be close so they don't blow up guns and get sued. So in reality the .327 Mag revolver is rated at 45,000 PSI and the .357 at 35,000 PSI, but even these cartridges are probably 23,000 and 20,000 PSI so very very safe.

      @GunSam  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! I know that at some point Taurus had some revolvers for it, including Charter and S&W and others but for some reason they quit. I think maybe the creation of the .327 Federal might have killed revolvers chambered in .32 H&R because who's going to want one when they think that company should be making a .327 which Taurus, Charter and S&W don't make either. Sort of how a lot of revolvers in straight .38 Special in some respects disappeared until recently because why not make it in .357 Mag sort of thinking. All in all the the semi auto popularity is probably the biggest reason to not go with it, the .380 makes more sense to a company trying to make money.

    Late to the party, here!
    A video from Chris Baker at Lucky Gunner got me to thinking about a wheel gun in .32. I didn't find one in .327, but I did find a Charter Arms Lavender Lady in .32 H&R Magnum, and after a little practice, I find it as accurate for me in "rapid target acquisition" drills as my beloved CZ 75D PCR, and easier to hide in summer clothing.
    I don't know whether I'll buy any Buffalo Bore ammo. An online contact is trying to talk me into reloading, especially for my .32 stuff, and I'm pondering it. At the expected muzzle velocities, I'm not sure JHP projectiles will expand to do the damage that SWC projectiles would do, but I'm thinking carefully about the differences.

    I handload the 100 grain XTP in 32 H&R to "Ruger-only" levels which is almost identical to those BB rounds (both, incidentally, very close to original black powder 32-20 from a rifle). I haven't tried them through clothing to see how they perform, but I use them for predators, so no need in my case. If one were considering it for a carry load, it might behoove him to test through cloth. Buffalo bore is fantastic ammo. I personally prefer it over Underwood and many of the factory offerings for their performance in advertised velocity, quality control is also great (I’ve never had any of their ammo not perform as advertised) and their selection is great also.
    Great test, Their advertised velocity is usually spot on. Their website also gives the actual firearm used for testing for a lot of their loads which is nice.
    Any plans on testing Buffalo bores standard pressure .38 special 158 grain Lead SWCHP? I know their plus P offering in that load is wicked, but in my limited testing so far the standard pressure is meeting advertised velocity and also expanding for me out of a 2” snub. There wouldn't be any reason why there would be two different .312" 100 gr Gold Dot bullets as far as I can think of, and the Speer Gold Dot .327 is using the short barrel bullet, not the deep curl HP bullet.

      @@GunSam Given that info, I would definitely like to see how the Gold Dot would have performed in that BB load. My general impression of the XTP bullets is that they are made for, and require, high velocity to work and have a bit more emphasis on penetration over expansion. I think they have been used in loads that were simply not pushing them fast enough to perform as intended. I'm sure you could rattle those right off as you've got more experience than I do with the different XTP loads out there. You know I'm a big fan of the Gold Dots. So you can imagine the wee bit of awkwardness I feel defending XTP bullets. LOL.

    In snub nose revolvers, this is where the .32 caliber tend to shine. They offer similar power, flatter trajectories, less felt recoil, and an extra round vs the .38/.357/9mm revolvers. When you step it up to 4 inch barrels, they remain fairly comparable with the .38/.357/9mm pulling ahead usually however but often not to such significant numbers.
    Major downside can be sourcing ammo... finding .32 H&R is becoming harder and harder. Even online many sources are only carrying Cowboy load stuff or Federal LSWC loads for target practice. But... .327 Federal however seems to be a bit easier with more variety AND it can fire the .32 H&R and .32 S&W Long or .32 S&W Short if you can find that.
    For commonality purposes, I dont blame people who want to stick to .38 Special. However, most people I encounter dont realize they need to push their .38's to a certain velocity to get reasonable expansion AND penetration. They just assume they will open up and do just fine. Where as I've seen plenty of .32 caliber JHP's that open up good in snub nose barrels from the factory or they at least open up moderately well.
    I guess the major take away here is if you want the advantages a .32 brings to the table it's worth investing in. But if you dont see any of those reasons as being an advantage then just stick with the more common .38's.

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      In my opinion it's really not a gigantic step to go to something like a .32 H&R or .327 Federal as all of what's needed is easily obtainable for slightly more money, and anyone serious about this stuff knows there's a lot of money involved in the shooting sports. I mean, I do understand why guys buy a $300 9mm and only 9mm ammo, but once you step into .38 and .357 territory you might as well take one more step to .327 lol

    • @Predalien195
      @Predalien195 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GunSam I think there's a lot of people who are just infatuated with numbers on paper and see only that. However, I will say this... for hunting application I do believe the .357 has a potential edge. With the ability to run hard cast loads with heavier bullets is a big deal to a lot of people. But the number of cases that are increasing of people killing things like bears using 9mm hard cast loads are slowly proving that the need for larger calibers and heavier projectiles to be a bit false.

    It seems more like you are firing buffalo bore 327 100 grain. They rate that version at 1300 out of a 3inch barrel and the 32+p is 1100 out of a 2 inch barrel. I could see the 327 falling to 1200 in a 1.8 inch barrel but gaining 100+ft is a stretch considering most manufacturers claim the best performance numbers on the box and what you get in real world is equal or less

    Wow! That .38 round seems to be pretty amazing for what it is. I have a couple questions, if you ever answer questions (I don’t know, I’m a new subscriber).
    My carry round is the Underwood 125-grain +P Gold Dot. I know it’s sufficient and then some. It does kick almost .357 hard (both my carry revolvers are .357 snubbies, and I have tried the ‘real’ stuff in them), and it’s .357 deafening and blinding to boot. You said it didn’t feel anything like .357 usually does, and I didn’t see a tremendous fireball. No way to know how it sounds, because I know recording equipment quiets loud sounds and boosts quiet ones.
    Have you tested the 125-grain Underwood Gold Dot stuff? If so, how would you say it compares? Obviously, in a self-defense situation, I’m not going to feel recoil or notice immediately if my eardrums rupture, but the flash genuinely is kind of a problem, and if you can enjoy practicing with a cartridge, you’re ALWAYS going to hit better with it. I might want this as my new carry load, it seems almost a bit good to be true. Thanks for the awesome work!

  • @MegaAppleshit
    @MegaAppleshit ปีที่แล้ว

    Personally, I don't see the point of 32 H&R. 327 basically gives you 9mm+P power in a Snub nose plus an extra round in small frame revolvers, and 32 long gives you low recoil, high accuracy, and enough power to drive solids deep enough to be usable for defense. 32 H&R doesn't have enough power to expand most hollow points and too much power to use solids. If you have to use a boutique load like Buffalo Bore +P to get expansion, there is a problem with the cartridge. Same as the 380, but unlike the 380, 32 H&R doesn't really benefit from the new tech bullet designs.

    You know how .38 Spl is heavily marketed towards women, for example: the Lady Smith line of model 60 snub nosed revolvers. I think it would be better if they switched that up to .327 Fed Mag or .32H&R Mag, which would improve sales of the .32 line. I will end by adding that I do not believe revolvers are a female only firearm. I am just pointing out that there are entire lines of revolvers targeted towards women in sales. I know part of the reason for this is limp wristing jams, which revolvers do not suffer from, plus purse carry and revolvers may fire while inside a pocket or purse. Anyway, marketing for .32 needs to be better overall. Edited to add I do not own any .32s. I do rock a S&W model 60 3” barrel .38spl.

However, despite the fact that my second back-up gun, the S&W Model 638, is rated for .38+P I do not carry +P ammo in it because when I have fired that ammo in it at the range I've experienced way too much recoil. There's just something about the .32 caliber that has always appealed to me. I have a J-frame S&W 30-1 in .32 S&W Long that I've long considered having the cylinder reamed to take .32 H&R (it was made in the '70s so steel is good and I've seen others done this way that seemed fine). That would give me another, more powerful option for carry, other than warmed handloads in .32 S&W Long (not really a whole lot of room in that case to boost it much before you start seeing flattened primers, in my experience). Or .. hey .. maybe I just need to budget for a new gun? :D

      When I was looking at Buffalo Bore ammunition last night I did notice that there are a a couple good options for .32 S&W Long. I don't know the barrel length and yeah they are not hollow point, but they are in the .32 H&R mag energy range.

      I currently carry a 115 gr Lead Flat Point (hard cast I'm pretty sure) that seems to be what Buffalo Bore is offering now. I bought mine a while back from a now defunct company and when I run out I'll likely be buying some of that Buffalo Bore 115 gr HCLFP ammo. I may have mentioned this before, I don't remember, but shooting water jugs once that 115 gr. LFP I carry penetrated more jugs (3 liter soda bottles, which are tough and therefor pretty much meaningless, I guess) than even .40 S&W JHP (which actually penetrated least. Most "good" JHP rounds would go into or maybe through the 2nd water bottle (like I said, 3 liter bottles are tough) but that .32 S&W Long made it into the 7th jug and did so pretty much sideways the whole way, making some pretty impressive (for caliber and power) holes. Not sure if that has any correlation at all to your water jug or ballistic gel (that was the last time I used soda jugs, too), but I figure it'll at least break bones that get in the way and reach vital organs, and it does that with quite low recoil, relatively low noise, and with the panache of a .32! ;)

      @GunSam  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Once cases expand they won't shrink on their own. The heat on the brass is hardly any, its a split second and not enough heat to expand them its the blast that expands them from pressure, not heat.

    Great video! That Taurus is all still. What do you think about the 125 +p Buffalo Bore in a light weight 442 or 642 regarding recoil and stress on the frame assuming limited shooting?

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stress on the frame shouldn't be an issue as it's still .38 Special+P. Recoil would be a bit much, so I suppose the distance used would matter. Up close recoil isn't going to matter if the shots are all over, 7 yards+ it will start to matter if you can't get good control of the recoil.

    • @WalterDavidRiffmon
      @WalterDavidRiffmon 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GunSam Thanks. My main concern is the wear and tear on the gun. I will test out recoil and how accurate I can shoot this round. I appreciate your revolver videos. I've owned many handguns over the years but I find myself constantly drawn to revolvers. They just feel right and provide confidence to me over semi autos.

    How can Buffalo be so far off. If they advertised 1200+ fps it would be to their advantage. Perhaps some follow up testing on BB to see if this the norm.

      20,000 PSI is the max pressure for .38 Special+P and 21,000 PSI for standard pressure .32 H&R. That means for sure the .32 H&R has some higher pressure, but probably a little less powder.

    Can you describe the difference in recoil? 32 less ???

    • @GunSam

      The .32 H&R is a little less recoil with this ammo. With standard pressure in both the .32 H&R is a lot less recoil than .38 Special.

    Do you like the LCR in 327 federal ?

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, it's a nice revolver. I been reading a little more into ammo that it can fire as some people say it's 5 caliber .32 ACP, .32 S&W, .32 S&W Long, .32 H&R Magnum and .327 Federal Magnum....however under closer reading about cartridge dimension and along with Ruger's manual, the only cartridges it can reliably safely fire are .327 Federal Magnum, .32 H&R Magnum and .32 S&W Long. The .32 S&W and .32 ACP have thin rims and slightly different neck and or base diameters. They will fit and fire, but not 100% reliably or safely. But back to the answer, yes I like it lol.

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's not for everyone, but there are two main advantages. One is that you get a 6 shot revolver with the same size cylinder as a 5 shot .357, .38 or 9mm. The other advantage is that typically .32 H&R Mag and .327 Federal Magnum have less recoil than their .38 Special and .357 Magnum counterparts. Such as this ammo, the .38 Special had 342 ft lbs and the .32 H&R had 340 ft lbs, but the .32 H&R felt like less recoil to me even with the LCR revolver being 4 oz lighter than the Taurus.
