Can these cheap Honda Goldwings make it 4,000 miles to Key West and back?

  • GoPro, you let us down... We left from Iowa and headed out to the southern most point (Key West, Florida) during the winter. Battling cold weather, snow, rain, wind, and more cold our GoPros failed on us consistantly throughout our trip. We scraped together what we could salvage and made one big @$$ video out of it! Even though it didn't turn out as planned I hope everyone still enjoys our "Old wing" challenge!!!

I live in Boise, Idaho. A few years back I bought a '85 Goldwing Interstate 1200 w/71K miles on it that had sat in a garage for 2 years. 2 weeks later, after some minor preventative maintenance, I rode it to Portland, Oregon. Stayed a week for work. Then up to Mt. St. Helens before returning back to Boise. That bike purred like a kitten getting its back rubbed. I still have it. Great bike.

As someone who just bought a goldwing 2 weeks ago, in the short time I've had it, I can safely say, 95% of the remaining goldwings (88+) can make that trip regardless of mileage

I had a 1985 Aspencade got it with 60 000 miles on it put another 60,000 miles on it, took it motorcycle camping loaded to the max always handled great 40 mph up hill down hill head wind tail wind great bike, one thing to watch for is the stator connection to the wiring harness next to the battery they corrode and take out the stator I eliminated the plug and just hard wired it.

It goes to show you don’t need to buy a crazy expensive motorcycle to take a long road trip and enjoy yourself. As long as it’s been maintained. I did that same trip solo on my Honda 750 Super Sport back in 1976. No windshield,
No credit card, no cell phone, no GPS, no camping gear. Just a sissy bar with extra clothes, a black leather jacket, leather boots, jeans and a $19 dollar K mart helmet. I avoided Georgia as much as possible going through South Carolina and on to Florida east coast then down to the Keys back to Illinois. About 3500 round trip.

@@NuvolariF1 Actually I remember getting my red metal flake helmet and clear face shield on sale that day. But it wasn’t a blue light special! Lol
I was a mechanic for Honda, so I got my motorcycle at a discount too!
I literally broke it out of the crate on my lunch hour, put it together and did the service. My boss asked me why I didn’t work that fast on his customers bikes…lol. Ended up quitting that summer for a better paying job. Worked that one long enough to save money for my motorcycle trip. I actually got the job back when I returned three months later and 27 pounds lighter! I saved my money for fuel and ran out of money for food.
Came back with only $14 left in my pocket. I calculated my mileage and fuel cost for my return trip extremely close and slept in rest stops all night next to my Motorcycle. A nice lady felt sorry for me and gave me a paper plate with pork and beans in the morning before I left Jacksonville Florida”s rest stop. That paper plate of beans had to sustain me all the way back to Illinois. I still remember that nice lady to this day!

@@Michael-st1hl Thank you for sharing your story. I could relate as a similar scenario happened to me and my brother on a skiing trip up in Mammoth Mountain and running out of money. We under-budgeted our trip. With the grace of God and with the help of kind people we made it home. We were just teenagers back then 😆😆😆. I do remember one particular man that asked us if we were Christians which we were and still are (Catholics) and gave us a prayer and gifted us 20.00 dollars which allowed us to get enough gas to get home. Gas back then was .85/gal. It was an adventure that I will never forget. I miss those days in the 70s and 80s.

I'm from one of those small towns like you see abandoned. 90% of the time the story behind those, is they are industry towns, where most of the population was employed by a major factory of some sort in that area. Those places close down for whatever reason and most of the population moves out. The south is a blue collar industry. My hometown died off like that because they built a bypass hwy around the main center of town and it relied a lot on travelers income. The main factory that employed most everyone ended up getting bought out by an outside company and in a matter of 5 years the town went from population 10,000 to about 900. You usually hear stories like that from the early 20th century but it still happens in this day and age. Especially in southern towns. My hometown for instance died off between 2006 and 2012. Even the school closed.

Goldwings are incredible, I have an electra glide now. It's a turd. It's just an antiquated design there is no getting around that fact. You can polish all you want It's still a turd. But goldwings are not without flaws. But hauling ass is not one of them . All the buttons fail to a degree. They always need maintenance. But overall bullet proof. Maybe a valkyrie next time. No plastic, all engine.

Missouri native here I live pretty close to Illinois and do know a little back story to those towns on the Illinois side, they used to be booming industrial towns that supplied barges. But as St. Louis got more popular and the industry’s moved through more populated towns. There wasn’t really any good paying jobs on the Illinois side. People either worked in missouri and lived in Illinois or found good paying jobs in Illinois which is not so common. Illinois has some pretty high taxes so people either moved to northern Illinois or surrounding states.

Honda’s are bulletproof. Made my mega trips on a naked 750 but I was 21. At 67 I ride my Valkyrie now and then to the beach with no problems at all.

If we proved anything it’s that you can take even the cheapest motorcycle across the country. Don’t even hesitate to tour with that thing!

It's amazing how my Yamaha 1900cc Raider only gets 25mpg yet a 1800cc loaded down goldwing can double that mpg

Everyone go yell at GoPro for letting us down! Not even these ‘action’ cameras could survive what we went through!

Wouldnt have those problems with a Drift HD. Ridden through tropical storms in Florida with those and they worked flawlessly. Not sure about the new stuff though.

The only time I ever went thru Atlanta without traffic was in 1973 on a non stop run from Key West to CLE., Ohio in a 1972 Vega. We hit the city limits around 3AM if I recall.

The second you opened the trunk on the 1800 and I saw the Team Strange sticker, I knew that bike had been on rallies. Very possible it has been on one or more Iron Butt rallies, and the Ed's Last Resort (RIP Ed!) means it was on one of the Georgia 12 hour rallies. That bike has seen a LOT of highway miles in short amounts of time.

Seems like we just got absolutely hammered this year with snow. Awesome video though. I got to give it to you guys I don't have the heart to be riding around in the cold

Man, that 1200 brought back some memories.... And it looks like you discovered the biggest complaint with the 1800: smallest luggage since the original GL1000.
