Scarlatti: Sonata in e minor (K. 291)

  • With so many Scarlatti sonatas, it is necessary to have a catalog so that you can find what you're looking for. Saying "the one in e minor" only narrows it down to thirteen pieces, which is one of his less common keys. It doesn't help that there are three systems which are based on different criteria, by two Italian and one American musicologist, so this sonata can be L. 61, K. 291, or P. 282! It is a more intimate minor key sonata with a bit of a wandering top line which more than one writer has said seems like it could have inspired Schubert's "Der Leiermann" from "Winterreise" though I am not at all sure that Schubert could have known Scarlatti's works in his lifetime.
    Domenico Scarlatti wrote 555 keyboard sonatas in one movement each. While they were written for harpsichord (except for a handful that explicitly state "organ") they are played and enjoyed by keyboard artists as diverse as Kenneth Gilbert, Vladimir Horowitz, and many, many more.
