    Riker: Captan, with your permission I've decided I'd like to stay on the Enterprise.
    Picard: Any particular reason for your change of heart?
    Riker: You're 70 years old with an artificial heart. Being a poker player, I really like those odds. Besides I think I can bang Deanna again.

      @UCMzsdsn7JGL70n-CbYBk6bQ Nah, he was just secretly in love with Picard, and was too scared to leave all his friends for a command of his own, despite being ready for it.
      The whole idea of being a first officer, is to groom someone for a command of their own, sitting on the envious position of first officer of the flagship is rather selfish minded, against the ideals of the federation.
      Also he threw a massive tantrum when Picard was captured by the cardassians and Jellico was acting captain, just because be made Troy wear a uniform, and made the others actually do some work.

      @shafta99 Spock was chief science officer, which is usually a terminal position. command duties secondary. riker was executive officer which is solely a leadership position to learn the skills needed to run the operation themselves one day. huge difference.

  • @oregonflatland

    Riker was smart, he knew it was better for his career to be the first officer of the federation flagship, than the captain of some more or less unknown vessel. He wanted his choice of command, not taking what he could get. It was a better idea to hold out for the Titan.

    • @oldtwinsna8347
      @oldtwinsna8347 6 ปีที่แล้ว +45

      Hard to say for sure. Riker was always an ambitious person, moving his way upwards. I'm sure he could still have done the same after a short stint on the Aries and having the benefit of the captain rank. By the Dominion war, he could have well been commanding his own Galaxy class vessel.

    • @davfree9732
      @davfree9732 6 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      The Enterprise D was the flagship at the time so... it's not silly. As for Riker, Best of Both Worlds tackled this topic of Riker's ambition. And as Troi noted, he was happy aboard the Enterprise. Peter David's New Frontier books delved further into Riker's mind through the eye's of Shelby... to some insightful and comedic effect

    I've always headcannoned it that Riker was banking on Picard being promoted up into the Admiralty at some point before Season Five, this would then allow Riker to become Captain of the Federation Flagship by default. He must have assumed that after 25 years as a starship captain and pushing close to 70 Picard would welcome a slower pace. I think Riker changed his plans when in Season One Picard was offered promotion to Rear Admiral and to take the post of Commandant of Starfleet Academy and turned it down flat. Even when it was offered by a very senior four star Admiral who had been his friend for decades and Riker knew Picard would have loved that job. He decided to stay as XO of the Federation Flagship and bare in mind the plan ALMOST worked when Picard was assimilated. From the Season Seven episode "Parallels" we know that most of the alternate Picard's in the multiverse died when Riker destroyed the Borg Cube over Earth in "The Best of Both Worlds" so after the battle he kept his field commission as captain and took permanent command of the Enterprise. So when taken as a whole (all the universes) Riker's plan to wait out Picard and grab the Enterprise worked.

    • @TheBigExclusive
      @TheBigExclusive 6 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Riker should have been given full PERMANENT command of the Enterprise after the "Best of Both Worlds". At the time, Starfleet knew very little about the Borg. So even with Picard getting rescued, Picard should have NEVER been given command back (especially not right away in the same episode) of the Enterprise. Picard needed a full psychological evaluation, and even be quietly retired by Starfleet command.

    • @koalabrownie
      @koalabrownie 5 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      That's not how promotions work. You ever wonder why Riker was being given command of the Ares instead of the Ares's own XO? Similarly if Picard was promoted (or retired), Star Fleet would promote a senior-ranking Captain to take his place, not promote the ship's Commander.

    • @oldtwinsna8347
      @oldtwinsna8347 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@koalabrownie true to the word. the Enterprise was one of, if not the biggest, space faring asset the federation had. it's going to the best and most skilled leader out there. look at how Picard got the job, he had decades of captaincy of the stargazer on his resume. someone of equal calibre would get the job. Not some first officer only candidate.

    • @BadWolfSilence
      @BadWolfSilence 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      koalabrownie But when Picard was captured by Q in a shuttle and was far away from the Enterprise with no hope of getting back without Q’s help, Picard said the Enterprise would continue with Riker as captain, so if anything were to happen to Picard then Riker would captain the enterprise.

    • @koalabrownie
      @koalabrownie 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BadWolfSilence Sure, but I wouldn't put too much weight to that. I think in that situation, Picards response was the one most understandable to the audience, rather than him saying "then starfleet will find an appropriate replacement".
      Realistically we can't say for certain because the show doesn't spell out it explicitly, but Riker's various offers suggest they follow modern military practice.
      Also Shellby in Best of Both Worlds wanting RIker's job suggests that even his position could come from outside the Enterprise crew.

    Starfleet clearly has a military command and control structure. Historically, turning down a promotion is usually a risky endeavor. It raises questions, fair or not, that is generally frowned upon by the senior officers and Admiralty.
    Obviously, "Number One" means "Number Two", and turning down a position that is a promotion to a billet that needs to be filled, that fulfils one of the prime reasons of Star Fleets existence and rejected by the man they had singled out as their choice to assume these duties can easily be taken as a slight towards that endeavor.
    "Selfish self-interest" is NOT career enhancing. It's not necessarily a career death sentence, but the promotion boards will not forget it, either. Their view is 'better the (real) Number One on a Number Two ship', than a 'Number Two on a Number One ship', because you are considered serving in a lower position than qualified for.

    • @oldtwinsna8347

      Agreed. Being a first officer is just a bus stop to moving forward to greater positions. Resources were carefully spent on molding Riker to become a great leader of his own, to fill that job once he was ready. Well, he was clearly ready sooner than normal, being a quick learner and having all the qualities needed. Then to just thumb your nose and turn down something that the agency has just spent years of resources on you when they could have chosen someone else to fill the same roll does not bode well at all.

    I really like how they show the Rikers history with his father, who competed with him and pushed him down versus Captain Picard, who gave him respect acceptance and praise. No wonder Riker wants to stay on board the Enterprise. Also his attachment to Counselor Troi was deep. @Scott.Sandifer 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    I remember thinking the Riker career storylines were kind of silly when they first aired.
    Riker is an accomplished officer, well deserving of promotion, but this was an episodic show. Every episode *must* end with each character in the same situation they were in at the beginning of that episode. There can't be any real change. Consequently, writers have to come up with silly reasons to keep everyone exactly where they are.
    Yes, it's comfort food, and you feel warm and fuzzy seeing Riker take his seat and boss Wesley around again, but turning down a promotion in a military organization would be devastating to your career. It's clumsy writing at best.

    • @b-chroniumproductions3177
      @b-chroniumproductions3177 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      But considering the prestige of being an officer aboard the Enterprise-D, it's a promotion by rank only. I'm sure Riker already wields more influence than he would if he became the captain of some science ship in the middle of nowhere.

    • @oldtwinsna8347
      @oldtwinsna8347 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@b-chroniumproductions3177 But he was on the fast track. Meaning, he did not have to sit long before advancing further. This happens in the real world. I believe though Riker may have had to sit on an obscure science vessel for perhaps two to three years, he'd quickly be then offered a Galaxy class vessel of his own that would match everything and anything the Enterprise did. By the Dominion war, he could've easily have hit the senior flag officer ranks, perhaps have been where Admiral Ross was.
