To be fair, he has the mindset of a Klingon. As in, combat minded. Clearly, the rest of the crew is going to be less enthusiastic. I thought it was funny when he recommended shields because of a probe, Picard initially turns him down, and then has to admit the probe isn't there for friendly reasons.

That's why this is hilarious. He'll say something completely reasonable than be told to shut up. Picard (or any other captain) will do something insane, and everyone is like "...ok sir."

Worf's role in the series was to suggest the obvious, pseudo-primitive reasonable reaction (generally defensive, suspicious, or preemptively violent) so he can get shot down in an attempt to make the main characters look more 'evolved' when their more enlightened approach succeeds.

funny thing is, ive watched nearly every episode of tng and and rember much of these and worf actions would have saved them alot of trouble nearly everytime.
It's like, "Nah, we don't need that aggressive Klingon mentality. Let's go about this the hard way."
That, to me, was the most damning thing about Star Trek: The Next Generation. There needed to be something of the Original Series in the Enterprise-D's method, and yet they'd rather be self-righteous pricks to... What? Pad out the length of the episode?
It's not so much of them being self-righteous pricks as it is trying to solve things diplomatically and also put as few people(or any other living beings) in danger for that matter.
Yes, most of the time listening to Worf would have saved a lot of trouble in that blasting anything suspicious with full power phasers and photon torpedoes will ensure that there is nothing around to give trouble, but one of the big points of the show is to try and do things diplomatically.
Also, the if the flagship of Starfleet which is supposed to represent the Federation goes around just blasting everything willy nilly, then that's gonna cause hell to diplomatic relations.
You don't understand diplomacy, then. There are plenty of situations in the show where acting in self-defense, and showing that the Federation is capable of exercising strength, is the best possible solution. The Enterprise-D bridge crew has a rather inconsistent moral compass, and sometimes treats its clear allies like enemies. "Talk softly but carry a big stick" is more sensible policy than "Our replicator-recycled waste don't stink" in the frequently unknown and mysterious situations the Enterprise finds itself in. The former allows for violence. The latter is just asking for you to get your butt kicked.
Granted, maybe I'm just cranky because there was no "A Taste of Armageddon" scenario for the Enterprise-D crew to address.

Oh, no I understand diplomacy and fully support the "talk softly and carry a big stick mentality". I've trained in martial arts for years and any good police officer, soldier, or martial artist should have that mentality in being polite and respectful, but at the same time be ready to kick ass in an instant if the situation demanded.
And of course in a lot of these situations if the Captain did just listen to Worf and was like "Alright Worf, then fire phasers full power" it would indeed "solve" that particular situation, but once again, depending on who or what the other guys were, there could be a lot of political fallout.
Part of it may also have been due to Q in that when popped in, he also like to comment on how "stupid and barbaic" humans are especially the times when Worf suggests just getting the shields and and PREPARING the phasers,( not actually firing, just making sure they're ready if needed) and even though he would hate to admit, Picard did want to show that humans can be thinkers and problem solvers to try and get out of these situations without just blowing everything else up.
And even if you set the god like entities just trying to have some fun for a bit aside, there could still be political ramifications.
Like with the Romulans or the Cardassians. Yes, those 2 races often do shady shit and the Romulans even were doing some secret research mission in federation space and maybe in cases like those the "big stick" policy should some into effect, but that "big stick" policy can also start a war and the Federation would much prefer to NOT fight in wars with races like the Romulans or the Cardassians.

Sometimes he never thinks things through because his Klingon side comes bubbling to the surface, Klingon's need to be told no when needed because as we see Worf still often speaks before he thinks things through, he wasn't ever passed off or ignored, just Klingon's are very difficult to handle and as we saw in DS9 he can't handle huge senior Commander or Captain roles, Sisko tried to give him that chance remember? but he ended up going all battle frenzy then killing lots of innocent people. Tacical and Security is where he belongs but you have to keep reminding him to think things through, you need to keep on top of him because missions require tact and complex politics, he has to tread carefully.
I agree with the entire TNG crew, it wasn't like he didn't have a commading role though, he trained in Operations Divition in Tactical and was in charge of Lietenants right from the start and this training counts in all roles below Senior roles, he plans missions too and helps guide them, why Riker always asked "What do you think Mr Worf? how should we procceed?", then he ether made suggestions or agreed with Riker and the team :) so he was like a smaller type commander but that is all he is able to handle. He always had 3 types of roles, Operations Divition, Tactical and Security, it's enough me thinks. Sisko finally came to the same conclusion he is where he belongs after him killing people, but even if he was given time off he would probs go quite insane also, Klingon's have a lot of energy so you have to keep them busy, think of them as an adult child where they need to run off their energy.
+FlyingMonkies325 That is unfair stereotyping. Sure the show may use ridicolous stereotypes sometimes, but there are plenty of points of counteragument.
-On Klingons in general: Look at Martok. Look at Original Series Klingons. Look at the Duras sisters, who if evil were certainly cunning. And finally remember that we can't infer too much about Klingons from a single example who wasn't even exposed to Klingon culture.
-On Worf: Worf may have his flaws, but many times especially in Season 1 his advice was very prudent. Failing to follow it put the crew in unnecessary danger time after time. A bit more caution would have done a world of good.
Where do you have evidence he would go insane from time off?
Finally, he did make ONE critical mistake, but that doesn't mean he can't handle more than he does. He did okay on the Defiant every other time, implying that he can handle more than he has or the bare minimum can grow into it. Not necessarily Captain, but more than he has.
(Disclaimer: I know Deep Space Nine far better than I do TNG, of which I have at best a very basic knowledge)
He just can't handle bigger roles, it's how it is... as i said Sisko gave him a shot at the big chair and he blew it, his Klingon nature gets in his way all the time and is on a daily basis very conflicted between his Klingon nature and what he was taught his whole life about how he should think like a human and because he grew up on earth he always tries to think like them but he can't always... he has to be reminded a lot because he often speaks before he thinks and as you saw the further along his journey he gravitated more to his Klingon heritage, but most Klingon's jus can't be trusted in higher up positions where they have total control over an entire crew when he cannot be relied upon to always think clearly... and that is part of the job, you need to think clear 24/7, there is no room for mistakes... and every situation always needs to be dealt with, with a complete objective and clear mind, creatively, with total tact becase you have to... your entire crew relies on you to keep them safe and not make mistakes, to think things through entiely, Warf isn't always capable of doing that i'm afraid..
His involvement in the Klingon community and his influence on it, suddenly getting up and going on a mission for maybe days on end to deal with very dangerous Klingon missions then at times where he becomes SO frustrated and his Klingon side takes over or stubborness and difficulty with change, it makes him a liability in top positions like that, he's just not right for it... I like Warf too he's amazing but i understand why he isn't meant for it, you don't understand his character as much as you think then if you feel he would be able to handle such a high position. I explained why he would go insane from time off, Klingon's by nature have a lot of energy, they are VERY active and become bored very easily too, they keep to be kept busy to run off that extra energy, remember he's actualy refused time off because of this, you see his eyes widen in worry lol it's because he can't sit still for 1 min, Klingon's are very hyperactive, it's just their nature and who they are, we can't change that.

It had an excellent premise, but it seems like eventually they would second guess their default decisions due to bad gut feelings and constant deja vu. You’d think eventually Picard would start to get doubts about the decisions he needs to make at critical moments. Even without cracking the mystery I think he would eventually second guess his judgment before the collision and decide to decompress the shuttle bay. I think this suggests that people are locked into their decisions and don’t have the capacity to change their mind. Thus isn’t true as so many factors come in to play. A realistic approach would be Picard resolving the loop the 3rd or 4th time around. But this wouldn’t fill an entire episode, though it would’ve given more time to see the aftermath with getting the Bozeman crew accustomed to the 24th century, which I always felt was needed in the epilogue.

This is especially the case considering the captain usually _shouldn't_ be part of the away team. The captain should remain on the bridge and oversee the situation from there. That way, in case something goes wrong with the away team, the captain isn't in any direct danger and the ship can easily get to safety without having to wait for the away team's return.
@@HunhowsShadowStalker I mean, at least part of it can be explained by playing off of Boimler's speech in Lower Decks; wierd-ass stuff happens when starfleet pokes around places and everyone needs to learn suck it up and work through it, since they might not get a briefing about it until after it's over. The senior staff are the folks with the most experience improvising when reality stops working in some new and novel way, therefore it makes sense to have them be the ones poking their noses in.
That said, having that party be very nearly the entire command chain of the ship is... perhaps an unwise choice, yeah...

It's kind of a plot device, Worf always wants to do the sure thing, the safe thing, he's slow to trust and believes a fight is around every corner. Worf is a bit of conservative thinking in a hyper-liberal world and helps to make the show more watchable by all us 21st century folk who would, if it came down to it, shoot first instead of being like Picard and lowering the shields to de-escalate the situation. He's there to voice the audience's tension and provide a counterpoint to the idealistic Federation policies and procedures which are perfectly embodied by Picard.

I liked Worf's attitude regarding security. He seemed more realistic about how threatening certain powers are, and how said powers won't listen to treaties. Given, sometimes he goes a bit overboard, but he is otherwise a fine security officer.

You missed one of the best: Season 3, Ep. 13--"Deja Q"--at the end, when Q becomes human again and wants to share his happiness with the crew, he makes two beautiful women appear next to Riker. Riker doesn't want them, so Q gives them to Worf. Picard commands Q to knock it off, so he makes the beautiful women disappear. You can see the disappointment all over Worf's face, tho he says nothing.

I've seen every episode a thousand times so I'm well aware of why worf was about to punch an old woman in the face at 0:40. With that said, seeing it out of context was way funnier than it should be.
