- Ever since "Game of Thrones" showed that there was a surprisingly large market for big budget fantasy television shows, studios have been looking for the next big hit. Netflix found its own with "The Witcher," and now Amazon is staking its claim on another massive fantasy series touchstone. And no, we're not talking about "The Lord of the Rings" prequel series that's currently in development; instead, we're referring to "The Wheel of Time" series by authors Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson. The hugely influential series is also simply huge, and Amazon's providing a worthy budget to bring it to audiences. Here's everything you need to know before "Wheel of Time" starts.

Are you excited for "Wheel of Time"?
No. As a fan of the books there is several issues I have. Mostly with casting. Why add more diversity to the cast when the characters already have so much diversity? Why change it for woke culture? It’s all wrong. There will be no consistency to this shows casting. Each region has a specific culture and look. The line “one of you five will be the one to defeat him.” Is bullshit and unnecessary foreshadowing. Moraine had no idea. The show seems to stray away from what the author wrote. Why change the story when there is so much content from Robert Jordan you can’t possibly put it all in the show anyways.
@@julienwood577 You should listen to the show creator, who has been a fan of the books himself since he was a kid. They chose casting based on acting ability, rather than based on looks They figured the show would be better with betters actors, rather than actors who looked more the part. I happen to like this approach.
The line with "one of you five will be the one to defeat him", is most like a voice over for the trailer only. People who watched this scene at the London Comicon said that Moraine does not say this in this scene. Lastly, in the books, Moraine more or less suspects which one of the "five" is Dragon after that person channeled into Bella when they left Emond's field.
Given that we will only have about 7 to 8 seasons of 8 episodes each, some content will have to be cut. The show will need to explain to the viewers certain concepts at a significantly faster pace to make the story coherent. This means changing scenes to fit this medium. As Brandon Sanders said, think of it as another telling of the same story.
please don't mention Game of Thrones ever again.

@Spharaoh Honestly it's pretty reasonable that rand isn't as tall as in the books as I doubt there are many 2m tall actors

This is one of the main inspirations for GOT in fact in the first edition of GRR martins book 1 of the series, jordan wrote praise on the jacket.

It's actually why I first picked up Game of Thrones, because of Jordan.
No it's not. I say that as a long time WoT fan. But the scene where Robb and his soldiers are waiting to attack I think the riverlands reads similar to a scene in WoT.
Other than that, two separate series completely. WoT being my favorite by far.
The role of Elayne was announced last week. Could have been the week before. Ceara Coveny is our Elayne, and the feedback from cast and crew is the Ceara IS Elayne.
It was leaked months ago though.
Looks like a great show by Amazon productions. Just hoping Amazon will finally come up with some kind of announcement of what they plan to do with Stargate series now that they are buying the rights. A lot of fans are eager to find out, including me!

they didn't buy the rights to stargate directly... they bought the parent company.. there are no clues what so ever - as far as I know - that they are planning anything with Stargate, except release the show on their platform maybe.

This deserves all the budget amazon can do.
Elayne didn't really play a "crucial role" in the EOTW, to be honest. She was there for one scene. "Hi, I'm Elayne. I'm a princess, but I want to be more. This is my brother Gawyn. He's charming and down to earth, but a little irritating. This is my other brother, Galad. He's a tattle-tale so I don't like him very much. Let's go see my mom!" I love Elayne's character arc throughout the books, but to say she plays a "major role" in book one is a stretch.
And her primary role in the later books was tedious political stuff - I LOVE the books, but if they pare that down I'll be far from disappointed.
Lady Elayne Trakand is a character in The Wheel of Time television series, first appearing in season 2. She is portrayed by Ceara Coveney.
There are many characters in the show whose casting has not been announced though. Bayle Domon and Elyas Machera being two notables. They may have been cut, or simply moved to later series, as Elayne was. Though Elayne wasn't that much in book one.

As much as Elayne irks me, her quick meeting with Rand is vital in my opinion. Somewhat disappointed by that.

I have a feeling that they are going to add the Elyas storyline to Stepin's (played by Peter Franzén) character.
According to IMDb Ceara Coveney has been cast as Elayne Trakand.
Books came with glossaries and I loved them!
It will be interesting to see who they eventually cast in the roles of the Forsaken, especially Ishamael/Moridin.

I have read every book of the Wheel of time. I hope they stick to the story like HBO did with Game of Thrones.
HBO did not stick with the story lol. I was throwing hissy fits because they ignored magic for multiple seasons.

I haven't re-read this series and have all the books in hardback. No time to read the first one now before the series starts. Me and my best friend at the time, both fell in love with this series and would talk for hours about them. I even had a blue dress that was kinda-sorta Aes Sedai-ish. I can't wait!
I’m so stoked for this series. I have read the whole series more times then I feel is healthy. But I love WoT
I have it on audiobook, the entire series with the prequel. Since I drive regularly, about 12 hrs a week, it takes almost a year to make it through the entire series. I have bought all the books on CD and ripped them to my MP3 player bought just for this. Judging by the trailers I've seen, the source material is there but off just enough to make a constant listener like me a little upset. I will watch the first episode to see if I will continue the TV series or just ignore and stay in the books.
I just realized I've only internally heard/said Aes Sedai. Either way, that is definitely not how I had pronounced it this last decade.

Brandon Sanderson only help finish the Wheel of Time series after Robert Jordan died. They didn't write it together.

I have some of these books, but haven't read them. I was mostly drawn to the book covers, and there's gaps between the books I have, so I wouldn't know what is going on.

After the two seasons of game of thrones by tolerance for fantasy shows has waned.

The one thing you need to know is the books are great wonderful. The movie is a Portal Stone world. All the names are the same . The storyline is totally changed. It's got things from Lord of the Ring scenes. From game of thrones. Mel Gibson's Patriot, Even the scene from Galaxy quest, and The hunger games so this is not Robert Jordan story. Local channel station CW had a wonderful sci-fi movie. Outpost it's ending this year. So sad . One of the actors from Outpost is playing in the Portal Stone wheel of time. So they have a scene from Outpost to. Outpost is way better.

Idk I’ve never read the books, so idk if it’s mostly all women. The tv shows makes it look that way, so idk how long I’ll watch it but I’ll give it chance. Game of thrones followed women and men not just women, well see 🤷🏽♀️
The book series is pretty evenly split between men and women; almost 50/50. Even from the very start, it’s going to be 3 women and 4 men that leave the Two Rivers.
The Aes Sedai are all women. Not the main characters.
There are plenty of male and female badasses in the series. But it is funny seeing these comments when we've been stuck watching mostly male shows for ages, especially when they're fantasy stories.

Episode 1 When Moiraine says the Dragon Reborn could be a BOY or GIRL.... WTF!!!!!! That goes against everything that makes the Book Series such a good read - there is a 2000 year Tension between Men and Women with an Iron clad Distinction between Male & Female Aes Sedai - The Dragon was a Man and the Dragon Reborn is a Man - This is not sexist but part of the plot involving male Aes Sedai going insane .... The possibility of a Girl being Reborn as the Dragon goes against the Lore COMPLETELY

Don’t compare this thing with the classics (lord of rings), never ever reaches any where near the Hobbits too. Seems to be like a Chinese amateur product with some buttery butterfly characters and overwhelming feminist slow-paced crafts. It can be compared with subclassed fairy tales like Last air-“bender”.
Looking forward to it, like really looking forward to it, just hope the casting fits and an overwhelming sense of wokeness doesn’t prevail. Call it racist if you want, I don’t care, i just prefer it when my favourite characters don’t get re-writ as a different race or sexual proclivity just for virtue points, going by the trailer i’m kinda getting that feeling...

Only 8 episodes?? If they arent 5 hours long, they are about to cut out a lot of shit... I cant see them betting on 1 book per season. 14 years is a long time, and cats will age out.

Yeah, the first season covers book 1 and part of 2, while also having many scenes from other books.
They already started filming season 2 this last summer so I’m betting there will not be a full year in between seasons. I’d guess that is their plan. Otherwise people will get really tired of the wait. I mean 2 1/2 years for the last season of Thrones (and it was shyte to boot). No, I think Amazon will go maybe 9-10 months between.

This show deserves far better than this superficial and occasionally wrong-on-details overview from Looper. I mean, do they just get lazy and look up some Cliff Notes version on the internet, when it comes to discussing the plot, characters and world? And could they stop with all the Game of Thrones comparisons? Ugh.

I gave up after book 7. It just took too long to go nowhere.
I would still give the show a try (at least first 2 seasons). Seems to me that they are improving the major faults of books.
Anyone who's read the books knows that a measly 8 episodes isn't enough to cover the first book properly, let alone the first book with elements of later books. Not a good omen for the series...
It'd take 30 episodes per season for 14 seasons and no one is going to do that.

Haha, that WOULD be amazing! But even increasing to 13 episodes/season would make a pretty big difference. The fact that they're not willing (or more likely cannot afford) to do this leaves me with very little confidence in their ability to provide fans with anything close to a satisfactory adaptation of the series.
