Hi Brendan I had the very same issue today as you describe. Ive changed the fuel filter many time but this time it wont start. I listened for the lift pump noise on priming but, yep, no noise. I started chasing fuses and relays but they were all fine. I thought the lift pump was on the way out last Thursday as on the way home the Terry started to hunt on an off ramp, I thought it was the strong gusty wind, then it went away. Further down the road I turned left off the 100 kph road and hammered it, it seemed starved for fuel as it was hunting again. Today I changed the air and fuel filters, now, no start. I spent ages looking for the fault, but no lift pump noise. Then I turned to TH-cam looking for the answer and found your vid, Im glad I did as its saved me from pulling out what little hair I have left looking for the problem.
Came looking for this TAT video today as I knew it existed. Exact problem presented today, however I smacked like the tank like it was an old Commodore and away it went😂. Customer replaced his own filter and the car would not prime/run. So I would say his pump has been dead for some time.
Vehicle towed in, no go. It just had a brand new pump assembly that had been fitted by another shop come in. We cut the trigger wire at the ecu after testing and finding it was a closed circuit. The vehicle then started and ran. It turned out that the new in tank assembly had a faulty switch (closed circuit, meaning empty tank.) Great video by the way Brendan
If this ever happens, disconnect fuel return line under vehicle passenger side and use a vacuum bleeder to bleed the system. You may want to bleed the system at the filter first then return line under vehicle. Make sure you leave the ignition on. Job done. That’s what I did.
I've put in a new fuel intank pump, plugged the plug in & thought I'd see if it would pump diesel out. It doesn't pump a thing out nor make a noise! I've checked fuse & relay. Can't seem to find any other relays or fuses.
Had exactly that problem with my 2013 diesel SZ. It used to surge intermittently at motorway speeds and then one day it died on the motorway at 100km/h, very exciting, the dash indicated it still had 50 km to empty. When the car was new I got down to 5 km to empty while on a country trip so I knew it shouldn’t stop with 50km of fuel left. The breakdown truck arrived and I said it seemed like it ran out of fuel so he through 5 litres in it, we primed it as per the operation manual and away we went!! Took it to the Mechanic who did a scan and discovered a low pressure error code and replaced the tank lift pump. Maybe asking clients about surging at lower fuel tank levels may be a vital clue.
Great video, I agree totally. My 2013 Territory diesel fuel pump started to get noisy and would surge intermittently on the motorway. Then one day it ran out of fuel on the motorway even though the gauge read 48kms to empty. The breakdown man came along and put 5 litres in the tank, we went through the start procedure and off we went. Took it to the mechanic and they found error codes for low fuel pressure, the pump was replaced and it runs much better now. I don’t know if it’s my imagination or not but, it feels smoother. I’m not sure if diesels can have a “miss” but with the low fuel pressure it certainly felt like it ran rougher. Your points in this video are all very valid.
Thank you so much for putting this up. Like the other commenter, I got stung after doing preventative maintenance by replacing the fuel filter. Ended up disconnecting the hoses and found no fuel was moving. It all clicked into place remembering I had an engine code a month prior telling me there was an issue with fuel regulation/control (forget exactly now).... That triggered during a highway overtake. Anyway, waiting on the tow now. Cheers.
Hi Brendan, I've got a 90,000km diesel Territory that sometimes when warm, cranks but doesn't start. No error codes, and runs when cooled enough to start. Low pressure fuel pump okay, fuel pump relay okay. No signal voltage to the injectors when it doesn't start. Any thoughts?
Hey Brenden.I have just been through the ordeal of changing the fuel filter on my diesel territory and then been left with a car that wont start. Now after finding and watching your video I can sleep at night knowing the real reason being that the lift pump was dead at the time of the filter change and not what I was told that once they lose their pressure they wont go,didnt make sense to me.The car had to be picked up and taken to the garage to have a new lift pump installed, but at least next time I will know what to do.Thanks
Great video Brenny have had 2 of these now with low fuel pressure codes and limp mode. Have been able to swap the filter out and refilled the housing with diesel to get it going but have replaced the in tank pumps aswell.
Hi Frank Do you mean you got it working with the failed pump What housing did you put diesel into ? Short of it is I've just spent a bit on suspension service and radiator replacement so I'm a bit hard for cash basically need to make it work together work to lay for the new limp I was thinking on using a fluid priming pump to draw into the filter and trying from there Any suggestions?
All you need to do is plug in all your lines back into the fuel filter, leave one line off, then get a jerry can of fuel or diesel and get a fuel primer off a boat and pump till fuel filter is full, reconnect line and your away 👍
What are the symptoms please? Ours misses and hiccups, like there’s a blockage in the fuel line, mechanic and auto electrician have tried SO many things and nothing has worked, the car computer is not showing a fault nor is the diagnostic computer at the mechanics and auto electrician. We have a ford territory Gaia 2009. The car has been away for almost 2 months and it’s driving me crazeeee! Hubby not mechanically minded so would so appreciate some advice here, could it be the pump as you describe here?
Hi, My battery light came on and the car just stalled. wont start. mechanic says no codes. sprayed diesel in intake car starts and runs until spray stops. Battery light still on. fuel tank pump sounds like it is working. Any solutions
Hey mate, my 2012 sz diesel territory is stuffing up every couple of days. DSC fault and cruise control unavailable, then it disappears after 2-4 locking unlocking and sometimes I've to move the car in limp mode a bit, then park at a new spot, lock unlock.. Then it goes back to normal. What do u think it could be? Fuel pump or some DSC sensor
@@danieladvantures8555 dont know man, sort of. Changed to a new battery, then replaced the throttle pedal after ultra tune mob scanned it. it working well atm, its gone back limp twice but fixed itself right away. so i dont know. lol
Thanks mate for the vedio, i changed my lift pump and after i changed it it seemed to be running all time,,after the engine has started,is it normal for them lift pumps ro do that? I thought it's mean to do rhe priming only
Lift pump runs all the time. Diesel fuel runs thru the engine and what's not used is returned back to the tank, so there is a continuous cycle of fuel round and round from tank to engine and back to tank of whatever fuel isn't used by the engine.
I would be ringing Ford and saying they have a service issue with the fuel pump. Does Ford know there is a problem there. By the way how much is a new fuel pump?
I have a 2012 territory Diesel and mechanic said keep fuel tank above 1/4 full and won't be a problem. He failed to mention all the other filters and pumps .

Either faulty pump or more likely faulty low fuel cut switch.... switch is incorporated in the L.P pump assembly.

How much did this cost ypou to replace the fuel pump

how much to fix the territory fuel system failure?

Possible bad connection@the master fuse in the relay/fuse box.

How much does it normally cost to change the fuel filter and pump on 2011 diesel territory??

great bit of information thanks mate
Hi I have 2011 ford territory diesel and there is warning said water in the fuel….
Is it a tank out job to change the lift pump or is there an access hatch under the seats?
Just got 🔥. Really got tips mate. Thanks heaps.

I'd try disconnecting the low fuel cut wire.
Did my filter on mine with 180,000 n she was fine but i do run ‘fuel doctor’ if thats any help to the pump?
What is the process to "reset" the fuel level sensor after putting the diesel in? 😂 I have just come to this hurdle

Same thing today, call out to bleed fuel system after customer ran out of fuel

sounds very logical all.

after reading all the comments, my advice would be DONT change the the fuel filter. simple. the kiss principle still applies.
Mate my died now won't start lol
