Not so surprising, the difficulty scaling is completely ridiculous in this game (which is otherwise great). This can make some battles a serious PiTA especially if you go for the XP exploit. For example, once you reach a certain level, run of the mill bandit archers will suddenly acquire the ability to shoot arrows with splash damage (scattershot), and missions where you're up against a lot of them will become a living nightmare.
The best part is there is an xps exploit when Duncan tells you to get dsrkspawn blood, you can keep talking to him for free up if you haven't seen morrigsn yet
TruthNerds play a two handed warrior with good armour, or a battle mage, and keep a healer in your party. You win the game. The only problem I ever have is one of the end game fights in denerim, the one in front of the fortress with dragons, a lot of archers and mages, and the only problems that I have are the party mage and rogue killing themselves by walking into aoes or getting oneshotted by archers

If you gather the three vials of Darkspawn Blood but not the treaties when you return to Ostigar, you can talk to Duncan and he will tell you to go back and find the treaties, but you get 750 XP. However, you can do this an infinite number of times.

@@timraup4888 Don't forget the pain from the fires around your feet. It will take a little while for the smoke to replace all the air in your lungs and make you pass out. Nowhere near as long as it would take to burn alive, but still a decent enough time to hurt like hell.

Also Skyrim's story is much shorter and not very interesting in all honesty. It never feels like there is any threat and nothing even changes when you complete the game.
@Furisin Maybe they fixed most bugs after I tried the game out. After release it was a total sh**show, and I'm not exaggerating my experience... It might be hard to trust given TH-cam comments, but I swear to you the game was total and utter bugged out sh*t on release... To such an extent that I gave up on the main storyline and only finished the mages and thieves guild quest lines.
It's one of the best games I've ever played. Fuck Bethesda, I can't stomach their games for more than a few hours without spending half a day downloading mods to make them playable.
I wished they would make more sequels like Origins, but they arent popular enough. Bioware forced the 'high speed action' into the series. I would pay anything to have both the Dragon Age and Mass Effect series remade to be like the gameplay of the first games in each series.
I'm just gunna come out and say it: you're the first person i have ever heard call Origins a Skyrim spinoff and Oblivion clone. I'm not joking. You are the only person i have ever heard of that has said anything remotely negative about it that wasn't "its old." I'm just here so i can stop struggling with annoying money.
I find the best example for comparing the quality of Skyrim to Dragon age is the romance. *Dragon age with Morrigan:* A very slowly developing relationship where she moves from a cruel cold person who does not even think of you as a possibility, to a one sided toxic relationship where she considers you as temporary physical pleasure, to her awkward and confused realisation she really cares about you, to admitting her love after saying the whole game that love is a weakness, showing that she has finally come to understand what love is really about, and that she would do anything for the warden, as he would do for her. *Skyrim with Uthgerd the Unbroken:* You have a fistfight then get married. Skyrim is fun to fuck around in for a while doing random grinding and side quests, but I find that enjoyment comes from the connection one can make to a game. Which is hard when all the characters in Skyrim have completely one dimensional personalities, with the exception of Ulfric and Serrana who are decent characters.
Then she has your evil demon baby who is actually the only way you can save the world from cooler Alduin (at least that's what I remember from the ending since I haven't played it in 10 years)
@DarkEternal6 without using feastday gifts it takes some effort to increase her approval. Also the romance with morrigan in dao can actually affect the games story ala the ring she gives you that she can track you with. No romance in skyrim matters in any way.
@Todd Lerfahndler oh yeah I totally see that, the combat sucks. For me I just use a bow and some mods and call it good enough. I rarely play the game to play the game, if that makes any sense. Skyrim is one of my favorite games for the art, colors, music and ambiance. It's a much needed comfort for me I guess. Nothing better then hearing Far Horizons and chasing butterflies and rabbits through the woods.

Been consuming a very unhealthy amount of spiffing brit videos and this is the first one I was triggered on. I guess I just assumed everyone knew DA:Origins was one of the best rpgs of all time. Might and Magic 3, titan quest, and Age of Empires barely did anything other than make me laugh and enjoy the video but AN OBLIVION CLONE??? Something extra had to be put in that tea of yours.
What's killing me is that it's closer to Morrowind than Oblivion mechanically. Can you even WHIFF in Oblivion without like, PHYSICALLY failing at combat?
Yeah, this is the weirdest take I've seen Spiff make, it's barely even the same genre of game. DA:O is a lot closer to games like neverwinter nights, baldurs gate, etc. Its far closer to an isometric tactical RPG. The combat is far more interesting than oblivion and Skyrim which, while they're good games, Imo have really basic and uninspired combat.
@@ss5gogetunks As a fan of Oblivion, Skyrim and DAO at the same time, I would have to admit that Dragon Age Origins do have a better combat than Oblivion. But I will deny that DAO has a complete overall better combat than Skyrim. First of all, the AI in DAO completely sucks. My mage warden had to cast spells on his own while Alistair and Sten pretends like the enemy doesn't exist, and stay completely still while my spells are interrupted by a bunch of walking corpses. You'd have to micromanage each of each of them and have to absolutely pause on many occasions, which makes sense considering the combat genre of the game itself. But the AI standing completely still while my spells are interrupted is just frustrating. If you're a fan of isometric tactic, pause and micromanage combat, then DAO would be a heaven for you. But most people, and as much as I like RTS game, a lot of us would prefer adrenaline paced action oriented combat like Skyrim. When it comes to the complexity of the combat itself, I think DAO would overall win over Skyrim. I can't say much about Oblivion, but I'd say DAO is much better than it. DAO makes you think on every combat encounter, Skyrim is just sword slash and stealth archer goes brr with a few tiny bits of thinking on a few occasions. But a lot of people do love sword slash goes brr.
@@figboi The AI won't do stuff if you don't set up your tactic slots. You really don't have to micromanage much and pausing is minimal unless you just don't know how things work like if you're new to it. For the most part, basic attacks are perfectly capable of clearing most areas. The only thing I find better to micromanage is the occasional powerful spell or talent for tough enemies, or an AOE for groups. Otherwise micromanaging the simple stuff is just an inefficient use of your time. For spells getting interrupted, that happens if you are attacked enough while trying to cast, and there are skills to prevent interruptions. And if you aggro a tank properly while the DPS kills everything, then a mage getting interrupted is basically moot anyway.
@@BradTheAmerican that's the thing honestly. I find that Tactic Slot are just too conditional to use and I'm too lazy to set it up to suit my needs. I know that there are templates provided for immediate use but I don't think it is more than enough and I find myself micromanaging in a time where I could just enjoy the battle. Still a great game though.

I remember an infinite xp glitch by doing the tainted blood quest. Just get the darkspawn blood vials before meeting Morrigan and head back to Duncan. just talk to him over and over and he will keep giving you xp for completing the first part of the quest.
It is my favourite game ever. I have put in around 2000 hours on multiple computers and copies. 5 of my playthroughs were literally the exact same character because he was just so damn awesome.

But if you're not against using a save editor to rescue a kingdom management system that has you f*ing up your entire game without knowing it (REALLY no way to know if you're doing well until you've blown up your entire kingdom halfway through the game) I'd recommend Pathfinder: Kingmaker to any fan of BioWares older titles.
@DarkEternal6 I think the sequels are good, just not Origins good. Dragon age 2 suffered from a shorter less complicated story with fewer companions. Inquisition's main issue was that it wasn't a Dark Fantasy like the previous games. It didn't have any of the spine chilling moments like The Dead Trenches or All That Remains. And it didn't have a brothel :'(

@Java Monsoon Narratively, compared directly to Skyrim, it's superior. Narratively, compared directly to Oblivion, it is superior. In terms of exploration, it might be inferior, but only because exploration is literally all Skyrim has ever had going for it. What games *are* like it? I don't think there are a particularly huge amount of games that capture what Dragon Age Origins tries. None of the sequels come remotely close to recapturing it. Perhaps the closest spiritual successor would be something like Tyranny.

Arcane Warrior is stupidly powerful as long as you don't let your mana run out, the right build letting you beat the final boss of the DLC without taking any damage, even without any actual exploits.
I think it's Windows 10. I just downloaded it recently and it keeps crashing as well same with other games like Arcanum. I just don't think Windows 10 is very compatible with old games.
Your video actually inspired me to bother installing this game, and I have to say it's actually really good. A bit janky, but infinitely better than Oblivion in terms of story telling and character interaction (in that there is some). It falls into the old Bioware tropes 90% of the time, but it's still a nice change of pace to most "open world" bath water experiences you see these days.
its better than oblivion in every way. i could never play oblivion again after figuring out how dumb the leveling system is and the annoying oblivion gate levels... it makes me shudder to even think about. this game is basically single player world of warcraft classic but with the actual rpg part included

Inquisition was my favorite. However, I am biased too because I had to play origins on my janky old PC, while inquisition was the very first game I got on a shiny new PC back when that came out. I sank so much time into that game!
Origins is the best of the Dragon Age games so far. It has proper Combo Spells. All hail the Storm of the Century! Also Spiff, you should have gotten the Ultimate Edition.

Perfectly fine to do this show 10 years after the game released. Would only wish to see a contineous live stream of this at some point. Also not 100% sure where the server outages come from, because as we all know bioEA servers work without a hickup.

Archers in front of the infantry line was quite common. Lack of risk of pelting your own men with arrows, clear line of sight, and with proper positioning your main front line can get in front of your archers. But no, artillery you leave behind your lines.
yeah, even in total war. you position your archers at front first and let them eat the enemy arrows then let them move back once the enemy front lines comes close
...archers could also be sat on one of or the flanks protected by infantry and Cavalry. Arrows are most effective shot at very close range straight at a target. If an enemy is heavily armoured you've only got a chance of causing damage at close range (although longer range fire can disrupt or occupy.) close ranged fire also incapacitates enemies much better reducing their combat effectiveness. They always have to worry about the possibility of arrows penetrating as well as feeling the smack of close ranged arrows collecting them while they're trying to focus on an opposing formation of infantry.
@@7dayspking could yes but you have to realize that humans aren't that fast to get to an archer before they start firing and when they release a few volleys. Archers tend tend to be somewhere where you want to keep on a battlefield, the crest of a hill, high ground, and so on. You normally want to keep that and have archers stay there. My actual issue with where they were is that there were walls just near them they could have been and that would have been best. My original note was at the comment against them being on the front, if it was that they were in the front instead of the walls then I wouldn't disagree.
@@roberthill5805 I don't quite understand, are you criticizing placing archers on the flanks? Famously that's what they did at Agincourt for example. If archers are left in front of infantry and are then 'moved' when enemy formations close the distance to protect them...you're not getting any close ranged fire which is where archers are very effective. If they're up on walls behind formations of infantry, they might be again quite far away from the enemy and at the risk of hitting your own infantry. Same with sitting them in isolation on the 'crest of a hill'.

@@saqwana25 thats what leliana is for. The only chests you miss out on are in Ostagar. And the loot therein is pretty bad anyway. You miss out on about 3 chests by not picking a rogue. A small price to pay for ultimate Power.
Before listening to much of the video, I liked it. Sadly, it was soon evident that I would have to unlike the video, as DAO is, in fact, one of my absolute favorite games. It is far superior then every game you mentioned. Sorry, not sorry. Great tips though 👍!

To such an extent that I gave up on the main storyline and only finished the mages and thieves guild quest lines.

I wished they would make more sequels like Origins, but they arent popular enough. Bioware forced the 'high speed action' into the series. I would pay anything to have both the Dragon Age and Mass Effect series remade to be like the gameplay of the first games in each series.

I find the best example for comparing the quality of Skyrim to Dragon age is the romance.
*Dragon age with Morrigan:* A very slowly developing relationship where she moves from a cruel cold person who does not even think of you as a possibility, to a one sided toxic relationship where she considers you as temporary physical pleasure, to her awkward and confused realisation she really cares about you, to admitting her love after saying the whole game that love is a weakness, showing that she has finally come to understand what love is really about, and that she would do anything for the warden, as he would do for her.
*Skyrim with Uthgerd the Unbroken:* You have a fistfight then get married.
Skyrim is fun to fuck around in for a while doing random grinding and side quests, but I find that enjoyment comes from the connection one can make to a game. Which is hard when all the characters in Skyrim have completely one dimensional personalities, with the exception of Ulfric and Serrana who are decent characters.
Then she has your evil demon baby who is actually the only way you can save the world from cooler Alduin (at least that's what I remember from the ending since I haven't played it in 10 years)

@DarkEternal6 without using feastday gifts it takes some effort to increase her approval. Also the romance with morrigan in dao can actually affect the games story ala the ring she gives you that she can track you with. No romance in skyrim matters in any way.

@Todd Lerfahndler oh yeah I totally see that, the combat sucks. For me I just use a bow and some mods and call it good enough. I rarely play the game to play the game, if that makes any sense. Skyrim is one of my favorite games for the art, colors, music and ambiance. It's a much needed comfort for me I guess. Nothing better then hearing Far Horizons and chasing butterflies and rabbits through the woods.

Been consuming a very unhealthy amount of spiffing brit videos and this is the first one I was triggered on. I guess I just assumed everyone knew DA:Origins was one of the best rpgs of all time. Might and Magic 3, titan quest, and Age of Empires barely did anything other than make me laugh and enjoy the video but AN OBLIVION CLONE??? Something extra had to be put in that tea of yours.
What's killing me is that it's closer to Morrowind than Oblivion mechanically. Can you even WHIFF in Oblivion without like, PHYSICALLY failing at combat?
Yeah, this is the weirdest take I've seen Spiff make, it's barely even the same genre of game. DA:O is a lot closer to games like neverwinter nights, baldurs gate, etc. Its far closer to an isometric tactical RPG. The combat is far more interesting than oblivion and Skyrim which, while they're good games, Imo have really basic and uninspired combat.
@@ss5gogetunks As a fan of Oblivion, Skyrim and DAO at the same time, I would have to admit that Dragon Age Origins do have a better combat than Oblivion. But I will deny that DAO has a complete overall better combat than Skyrim. First of all, the AI in DAO completely sucks. My mage warden had to cast spells on his own while Alistair and Sten pretends like the enemy doesn't exist, and stay completely still while my spells are interrupted by a bunch of walking corpses. You'd have to micromanage each of each of them and have to absolutely pause on many occasions, which makes sense considering the combat genre of the game itself. But the AI standing completely still while my spells are interrupted is just frustrating.
If you're a fan of isometric tactic, pause and micromanage combat, then DAO would be a heaven for you. But most people, and as much as I like RTS game, a lot of us would prefer adrenaline paced action oriented combat like Skyrim.
When it comes to the complexity of the combat itself, I think DAO would overall win over Skyrim. I can't say much about Oblivion, but I'd say DAO is much better than it. DAO makes you think on every combat encounter, Skyrim is just sword slash and stealth archer goes brr with a few tiny bits of thinking on a few occasions. But a lot of people do love sword slash goes brr.
@@figboi The AI won't do stuff if you don't set up your tactic slots. You really don't have to micromanage much and pausing is minimal unless you just don't know how things work like if you're new to it. For the most part, basic attacks are perfectly capable of clearing most areas. The only thing I find better to micromanage is the occasional powerful spell or talent for tough enemies, or an AOE for groups. Otherwise micromanaging the simple stuff is just an inefficient use of your time. For spells getting interrupted, that happens if you are attacked enough while trying to cast, and there are skills to prevent interruptions. And if you aggro a tank properly while the DPS kills everything, then a mage getting interrupted is basically moot anyway.
@@BradTheAmerican that's the thing honestly. I find that Tactic Slot are just too conditional to use and I'm too lazy to set it up to suit my needs. I know that there are templates provided for immediate use but I don't think it is more than enough and I find myself micromanaging in a time where I could just enjoy the battle.
Still a great game though.

I remember an infinite xp glitch by doing the tainted blood quest. Just get the darkspawn blood vials before meeting Morrigan and head back to Duncan. just talk to him over and over and he will keep giving you xp for completing the first part of the quest.

Dragon Age was one of my favorite games for a while.
It is my favourite game ever. I have put in around 2000 hours on multiple computers and copies.
5 of my playthroughs were literally the exact same character because he was just so damn awesome.
@@thejohnhopkinscompany9599 There are a few games that outshine it imo. It's sad that the KOTOR1 engine has aged so poorly to be honest... But if you're not against using a save editor to rescue a kingdom management system that has you f*ing up your entire game without knowing it (REALLY no way to know if you're doing well until you've blown up your entire kingdom halfway through the game) I'd recommend Pathfinder: Kingmaker to any fan of BioWares older titles.
@DarkEternal6 I think the sequels are good, just not Origins good. Dragon age 2 suffered from a shorter less complicated story with fewer companions. Inquisition's main issue was that it wasn't a Dark Fantasy like the previous games. It didn't have any of the spine chilling moments like The Dead Trenches or All That Remains.
And it didn't have a brothel :'(

@Java Monsoon Narratively, compared directly to Skyrim, it's superior. Narratively, compared directly to Oblivion, it is superior. In terms of exploration, it might be inferior, but only because exploration is literally all Skyrim has ever had going for it.
What games *are* like it? I don't think there are a particularly huge amount of games that capture what Dragon Age Origins tries. None of the sequels come remotely close to recapturing it. Perhaps the closest spiritual successor would be something like Tyranny.
*eyes the DLC heavy plate that is in my inventory from the beginning but can't be worn until level 12*
*sees that it costs over 4 GP, and realizes the infinite money cheat goes exponentially faster with more expensive items*
*falls into a mad fit of maniacal laughter as my level 3 character gets 50 GP in two minutes*

Arcane Warrior is stupidly powerful as long as you don't let your mana run out, the right build letting you beat the final boss of the DLC without taking any damage, even without any actual exploits.
1200 hours in DA:O and I never had a crash. Don't know what witchcraft Spiff is up to.
I think it's Windows 10. I just downloaded it recently and it keeps crashing as well same with other games like Arcanum. I just don't think Windows 10 is very compatible with old games.

missed opportunity of making tesla into TEAsla which aims to grow tea in space.
Your video actually inspired me to bother installing this game, and I have to say it's actually really good. A bit janky, but infinitely better than Oblivion in terms of story telling and character interaction (in that there is some). It falls into the old Bioware tropes 90% of the time, but it's still a nice change of pace to most "open world" bath water experiences you see these days.

Inquisition was my favorite. However, I am biased too because I had to play origins on my janky old PC, while inquisition was the very first game I got on a shiny new PC back when that came out. I sank so much time into that game!

Arcane warrior let's you solo that dlc flesh golem on the hardest setting. It's crazy broken.
Spirit healer and blood mage is a weirdly good combination. And Blood Wound is probably the second most overpowered spell in the game.

It had a VERY positive reception back in the day. Granted, I think it’s a bit overrated, but definitely still a good game.

@@ohyeahyeah3052 Hey, DA2 wasn't that bad. It was actually rather good considering the time constraint. Origins is by far the best in the series (at the very least in lore and character-building), but I really enjoyed DA2.

Archers in front of the infantry line was quite common. Lack of risk of pelting your own men with arrows, clear line of sight, and with proper positioning your main front line can get in front of your archers. But no, artillery you leave behind your lines.

yeah, even in total war. you position your archers at front first and let them eat the enemy arrows then let them move back once the enemy front lines comes close
...archers could also be sat on one of or the flanks protected by infantry and Cavalry. Arrows are most effective shot at very close range straight at a target. If an enemy is heavily armoured you've only got a chance of causing damage at close range (although longer range fire can disrupt or occupy.) close ranged fire also incapacitates enemies much better reducing their combat effectiveness. They always have to worry about the possibility of arrows penetrating as well as feeling the smack of close ranged arrows collecting them while they're trying to focus on an opposing formation of infantry.
@@7dayspking could yes but you have to realize that humans aren't that fast to get to an archer before they start firing and when they release a few volleys.
Archers tend tend to be somewhere where you want to keep on a battlefield, the crest of a hill, high ground, and so on. You normally want to keep that and have archers stay there.
My actual issue with where they were is that there were walls just near them they could have been and that would have been best. My original note was at the comment against them being on the front, if it was that they were in the front instead of the walls then I wouldn't disagree.
@@roberthill5805 I don't quite understand, are you criticizing placing archers on the flanks? Famously that's what they did at Agincourt for example.
If archers are left in front of infantry and are then 'moved' when enemy formations close the distance to protect them...you're not getting any close ranged fire which is where archers are very effective. If they're up on walls behind formations of infantry, they might be again quite far away from the enemy and at the risk of hitting your own infantry.
Same with sitting them in isolation on the 'crest of a hill'.

@@saqwana25 thats what leliana is for. The only chests you miss out on are in Ostagar. And the loot therein is pretty bad anyway.
You miss out on about 3 chests by not picking a rogue. A small price to pay for ultimate Power.

@@Skumtomten1 me too, ive played over 6 playthroughs and keep going back for more. the writing and characters are so good, combat may be a bit clunky at time but its more tactical and fun than oblivion or skyrims hack/slash then enchant/make custom spells to one shot everyone. i love skyrim and oblivion too tho
