“Nothing wrong with wanting a home as long as someone else isn’t living there.” There are… things in Season 5 that are painfully similar to some things going on in the real world right now. One of the things I love about this show, and about science fiction generally, is that it can discuss hot button real world topics indirectly. Since it’s indirect, people’s partisan blinders often miss it and then they have to actually think about it. The show transits from entertainment, to art, to education, and it does it following Twain’s maxim about teaching and preaching covertly.
That's one of my favorite things about Star Trek The Original Series. I love the sci-fi filter used for the Vietnam War, Civil Rights, etc Great stuff, my friend! Thank you for watching!
@actorI always take the opportunity to use one of my favourite quotes in regard to this: Science fiction is an existential metaphor that allows us to tell stories about the human condition. Isaac Asimov once said, "Individual science fiction stories may seem as trivial as ever to the blinded critics and philosophers of today, but the core of science fiction, its essence, has become crucial to our salvation, if we are to be saved at all." points if you know where it is from.
Awesome reaction as usual! That noodle place is an actual ramen restaurant (they changed the lighting though) ... Always makes me happy to notice the Toronto locations in this show... Great, now i want ramen 🤤
Thank you for the kind words and for watching, my friend! So many people have made similar statements. That's why I am drinking in each and every episode. I refuse to speed through...though I DESPERATELY want to :)
Oooh, noticing the nod to Blade Runner... Nice! Yes, at least one of the original writers is a big fan. Frankly, it's refreshing to see someone who can recognize all of that. Well done! ;-]
Thank you for the kind words! Blade Runner is a favorite of mine. I thought 2049 was one of the best movies of the last few years and the TTRPG by Free League is fantastic! Thank you for watching, my friend!
One of the things that I like about this episode is how the briefing by Captain Shaddid, is so very different than the one in episode 3. At that time corporate policy was paramount and they needed to keep peace for the profitability of the station, now the reality of 'the street' comes into play. This means that we see the Star Helix for the mercenaries that they really are. They are there to make the station work for their corporate masters. If you want some guidance as to who Fred Johnson really is then look at his face while he is being congratulated. Lastly, welcome to the Roci.
Bro, the 'Human' emotions in this series are Hardcore man. This show does such a great job of portraying the 'sides', but an even better job of showing all the emotions that run through our collective human experience. I hope we can all learn something about where our future needs to go from these stories.
The thing to keep in mind when watching the show is the background of the characters as the writers are very consistent with their characters and motivations. It was natural for Naomi to be the most skeptical about going to Fred who has a reputation for killing a bunch of helpless belters, after all, she is a belter herself. Alex who served 20 years in the MCRN and was honourably discharged wanted to go and surrender to them, while all three guys from the inner planets (Earth and Mars) were willing to give Johnson a chance as Fred Johnson's history was nowhere as personal to them as Naomi.
Here we get a few hints that the Roci is a highly advanced AI. It figured out Naomi was an engineer and, without being asked, showed her diagnostic information about the ship on a wall panel. I'm guessing it had access to the dossiers on them, but it still needed to figure out it needed to read them and then interpreted what their content means to it.
I have never watched a show as well written as this one, I don't think. There are elements introduced in the episodes so far that have reverberations and follow through going all the way through the end of the series. Man.
Man, the beginning of season 1 is so good; the entire series is awesome, but the setup in these first few episodes does such a good job of spinning the viewer through the mystery.
Besides the 9 main Expanse novels there 6 or 7 novellas and at least one is incoporated into each season as a subplot. "The Butcher of Anderson Station" is one of the novellas. I'm enjoying your theories.
I am so pumped to read absolutely everything after I'm done the series! Starting to flesh out a TTRPG campaign as well. Thank you for the info and for watching, my friend!
@@kirkdarling4120 If we call them all novellas (some, including the Butcher, are officially called short-stories) then there are 5 of them incorporated (plus a very small bit of a sixth). If we go by the official term, it's 2 short-stories and 3 novellas that made it into the show. @billross7245 Its total 9. 6 novellas and 3 short-stories. Although one of the shorts is not really part of the book series but the RPG.
As you like Amos here's an interesting bit of (non-spoilery) trivia. When Wes Chatham's agent told him about the show being cast, and how he should go for the Holden "lead" role as it would be a good career move, Wes had already read the first novel and basically said "No, I want to play Amos!".
I had watched Havelock being spiked maybe three times before I noted the Belter who was taking the video on his hand terminal. The ship knew Naomi was an engineer and presented engineering info to her without needing her command. It can read the chips in their necks and it knows their backgrounds from the same information Lopez had when he interrogated them. It can understand commands specifically for it among conversations and despite accents. Artificial Intelligence is all around, but understated. "Ask the clerk for a sherpa." It took a couple of rewatches before I noticed that the faux Bizi Bitiko's space Tinder tagline was "I'll be your sherpa." Your thought about Dawes using Kothari to distract Miller from Julie is veeeeerrrry in...ter...est...ing. The prostitute Gia made a particular gesture to Havelock: She touched to fingers to her lips, then to his chest. Two fingers to the lips is Belter sign language for a kiss. Notice that in the video where Julie knocks down the dock worker, that dock worker gives her the same gesture as she walks away. Everyone is the protagonist of their own story. That's how this story is presented from each character's point of view. That is how the novels were told: From the points of view of different characters, so we saw their stories from their points of view.
I noticed the Belter sign when Juliette knocked down my guy on the docks. It confused me a bit because it looked like he did a variation by 'wiping it away'? I wasn't sure if he was moving to get up or if it was part of the sign. Great stuff, my friend! Thank you for watching!
you know, you are someone I'd love to watch and discuss this show with :) love hearing your thoughts! About Fred Johnson: yea, pretty much everyone knows about that he killed Anderson Station (Naomi seemed to be sure the rest of the crew knew exactly what she was talking about). Naomi is a belter of course and apparently a lot of belters died by Johnson's hand that day 11 years ago as an act of oppression by earthers. maybe that has something to do with it? might be something else in Naomi's past of course. Looks like she doesn't know the man personally but she lets on that she's known people LIKE him "men with causes that get people killed" and apparently, she tries to stay away from people like that. It's also interesting to learn more about her and Amos' relationship with each other. So far we only saw that Amos follows what she says no matter what but this time we learn, that he doesn't just do so blindly. Amos trusts Naomi to do the right thing and follows her lead because of that but this time he couldn't figure out what her big problem was with going to Tycho when they had no other apparent option available to them. Also, at least for us, the evidence that Julie had something to do with whatever the Canterbury and Donager were killed over thicken more and more and of course it's very likely that Dawes knows more about this, too. Remember how often the Martians mentioned Phoebe Station and Lopez explaining to Holden what he knew about that. Now Miller found out that apparently Julie's ship (the Scopuli) was apparently sent out to intercept a sihp that was headed to Eros from Phoebe. Hardly a coincidence, right? She was nowhere to be found on the Scopuli though, neither dead nor alive but apparently, Miller is getting closer (as evidenced by all the eyes on him as you said). Johnson knew about the Tachi/Rocinante leaving the battle around the Donager because he had the powerful scopes of the Mormon ship he's building pointed at the battle. Apparently he had eyes on the situation the whole time AND he is a big name in the OPA. Question is: what does he have to do with anything? So far, we only know that he knew where to look and that he's willing to take a risk by offering the survivors safe harbour.
I just want to do my "Like, Comment, Subscribe" thing. You are the first reactor that I have watched who really sees the forest and the trees. You are going to be angry that it wasn't more recognized for the masterwork that was missed, and only survives because fans. Thank you for diving in, you won't be disappointed.
Your reactions to this amazing show are fantastic. I SOOOO look forward to each installment. If no one has mentioned it already, the actor who plays Amos (Wes Chatham) and one of the two authors of the novel series (Ty Franck) have a podcast which can be watched her on TH-cam. It is called "Ty and That Guy" - the "that guy" is an Amos reference that is revealed later on. Together they discuss the series, episode by episode, often with guests (such as Thomas Jane who plays Miller). They also discuss other movies they love, doing deep dives, one of which is Blade Runner (you are spot on about the homages), so there is loads of fun content aside for spoiler episode discussions. The two are great friends and very entertaining. Highly recommended.
fun podcast, but they will mention stuff from later in the show even in their episode by episode material, so it presents a spoiler risk. Better to get 3 or 4 seasons into the show before starting with the podcast, maybe more.

While you have a lot right about Miller, you're missing something. 🙂 How much of Miller's perception of Julie is based on what he *wants* to believe about her, and how much of that perception influences his interactions with other people when talking to them *about* Julie? 😉 You also learned the name of yet another place that happens to be real. To Ceres, the largest asteroid in the Main Belt; and Saturn's moon, Phoebe; you may now add Eros. Hint: It's another asteroid, but its orbit *does not* lie in the Main Belt. Mostly. 🤔

This show has to offer so much more than pretty accurate physics, density of details and excelent cinematography. The Expanse is a masterclass in charcter writing brought to liife by an outstanding ensemble cast down to the smallest speaking role. I am looking forward to your journey into the expanse, especially concerning Amos ;) PS.: others might tell you how much they like the character growth of Amos to which i have to disagree. The Amos we saw in episode one remains exactly the same as he progresses through the story. We just get to learn more and more who he is and why, which makes him one of the best written charcters in TV history.
I both agree and disagree. The first 2/3 of Amos is pretty much him being the same and us learning more about him. The last 1/3 includes definite character growth. No details. Spoilers.
If you decide to try reading the books and want to delve into this there is a short story called 'The Butcher of Anderson Station' about Fred Johnson that is more nuanced and shows his conflict and what finally made him go 'fuck this, I'm getting out of the UNN and going independent/OPA' The short story is rather compact and the audiobook is only an hour long
I'm curious about something. You're wearing a hat and it appears to be a nod to Miller and his hat. You don't have a hat in videos for other shows. But you're wearing it from episode 1. I'm not suggesting you aren't being honest when you say 1st watch, but how did you know about Miller and his hat? I do really like your reactions, as you seem really sharp. As a fellow sharp person I hope you'll appreciate that this is an just observational question. I love The Expanse because it makes us think... and I was thinking..."how did he know about Miller's hat, before starting the show??" And yes Miller threw away the device Dawes gave him. Dawes wanted a Belter cop in his pocket. He says as much, but just not in an overt way. That's what makes the writing and acting so brilliant!! I love it when Dawes says in a off hand manner manner, that "he's not even remorseful" At that point my ears shot up like a rabbit. Wait!!!... how would you know? Again brilliant writing 😁 BTW, Season 1 is fantastic but will pale when you see what is coming
HaHa Whenever I pick a new show/movie to watch, I always check its promotional materials (to avoid spoilers). From there, I pick someone to cosplay. Since the only actor I recognized from The Expanse's promotional material was Thomas Jane (I knew him from Punisher and Hung), I decided to go with him.
I love the sci-fi filter used for the Vietnam War, Civil Rights, etc
Great stuff, my friend!
Thank you for watching!
@actorI always take the opportunity to use one of my favourite quotes in regard to this:
Science fiction is an existential metaphor that allows us to tell stories about the human condition. Isaac Asimov once said, "Individual science fiction stories may seem as trivial as ever to the blinded critics and philosophers of today, but the core of science fiction, its essence, has become crucial to our salvation, if we are to be saved at all."
points if you know where it is from.
@@WarpReactor Great sci-fi talks about us without ever talking about us and expose the uncomfortable truths that we try to hide from ourselves.
Go Screaming Firehawks! :D
Awesome reaction as usual!
That noodle place is an actual ramen restaurant (they changed the lighting though) ... Always makes me happy to notice the Toronto locations in this show... Great, now i want ramen 🤤
That's awesome! Now I want ramen too :D

The series gives nods to many SF classics, movie and literary. Even the term "Belter" is a nod to author Larry Niven.
Man.
Loving the engagement. Now you have some context for why the fanbase refers to itself as the "Screamin' Firehawks."
HaHa I love that!
I'm adding that to my work bio just to see if anyone picks up on it :D
Thank you for watching, my friend!
@@WarpReactorAnd later in the show, the producers nodded back to the "Screaming Firehawks."
Three of the novellas are incorporated. At least.
"Ask the clerk for a sherpa." It took a couple of rewatches before I noticed that the faux Bizi Bitiko's space Tinder tagline was "I'll be your sherpa."
Your thought about Dawes using Kothari to distract Miller from Julie is veeeeerrrry in...ter...est...ing.
Julie's space tinder pseudonym is interesting too. Will make more sense later.
you know, you are someone I'd love to watch and discuss this show with :) love hearing your thoughts!
You are following the stuff that most reactors miss, and you will only get out more of this show for it. I give almost any reactor to "The Expanse" a chance, and most get hooked by the big moments. You got one in s1e4, but most reactors really miss the complexity of the series.
There's a very personal reason for Naomi to react to "people like Johnson" the way she does. You'll see.
So many small moments in season one can be viewed differently when you know what is to come.

Surprisingly you have been in the Amos character corner. I couldn't stand him at first. But I'm forever in his corner with you!
Star Wars has the Millennium Falcon, Star Trek has the Enterprise! In this episode we get the name of our ship, the Rocinante! And we love her very very much ❤
Also in this episode we claim our fandom name " Screaming Firehawks!"

While you have a lot right about Miller, you're missing something. 🙂
How much of Miller's perception of Julie is based on what he *wants* to believe about her, and how much of that perception influences his interactions with other people when talking to them *about* Julie? 😉
You also learned the name of yet another place that happens to be real.
To Ceres, the largest asteroid in the Main Belt; and Saturn's moon, Phoebe; you may now add Eros.
Hint: It's another asteroid, but its orbit *does not* lie in the Main Belt. Mostly. 🤔
I've gained a little more perspective on Miller's 'view' of Juliette and I smell what you're cooking ;)

I don't have anything new to say not already said elsewhere in these comments. if you like Amos now then please continue with the final 3 books once you finish the show. also, the actor who portrayed Amos as well as one of the writers of the novels have a watch-along podcast that is well worth checking out. Ty & That Guy - they have a YT channel
"The expanse" is basically a 6 season story about a man and his quest to get the perfect cup of coffee😂
(Sorry if that's a spoiler)
HaHa Awesome :D
Thank you for watching, my friend!
I adore Amos.
This show has to offer so much more than pretty accurate physics, density of details and excelent cinematography.
The Expanse is a masterclass in charcter writing brought to liife by an outstanding ensemble cast down to the smallest speaking role.
I am looking forward to your journey into the expanse, especially concerning Amos ;)
PS.: others might tell you how much they like the character growth of Amos to which i have to disagree.
No details. Spoilers.
If you decide to try reading the books and want to delve into this there is a short story called 'The Butcher of Anderson Station' about Fred Johnson that is more nuanced and shows his conflict and what finally made him go 'fuck this, I'm getting out of the UNN and going independent/OPA'
The short story is rather compact and the audiobook is only an hour long
My biggest regret for the show is that they couldn't get Jared Harris in a bit more
I'm curious about something.
I love The Expanse because it makes us think... and I was thinking..."how did he know about Miller's hat, before starting the show??"
And yes Miller threw away the device Dawes gave him.
Again brilliant writing 😁
BTW, Season 1 is fantastic but will pale when you see what is coming
HaHa Whenever I pick a new show/movie to watch, I always check its promotional materials (to avoid spoilers). From there, I pick someone to cosplay. Since the only actor I recognized from The Expanse's promotional material was Thomas Jane (I knew him from Punisher and Hung), I decided to go with him.
My biggest concern when blindly picking cosplay is that I'll choose a real @sshole :D
So far I lucked out with Miller :D

@@WarpReactor 😆 That's COOL! I do see that you have different costumes for various shows. I like that you animated yourself for Star Trek Lower Decks thumbnail.

Like Superman's S, he just isn't Miller without it
Besides, he needs it to "keep the rain off my head" ......in SPACE?....ummm... okay... sure 😄
