No, the asteroid breakup was not intentional. That's why Marco sent Phillip to attack the science station. They took the data cores to try and cover it up.
The asteroid breakup was absolutely intentional. That's the same asteroid that you see in the last episode of the season that messes up the ships guarding the ring. What's strange is that nobody plotted the fragments' course to learn that's where they'd end up, but maybe they didn't have enough info after the destruction of the Asami.
@@JDMunoz-ct9xn that makes no sense. The fact that Chrisjen was able to analyze the data means they were tracking the debris. Also, The Ring is out past Uranus. A sun grazing asteroid would take years, DECADES, to get out there.
@@rodentnolastname6612 Yeah, there was never any hint that the debris in that episode was from the first asteroid. Also it was high speed gravel, not chunks. And needed to be timed for the attack. Getting into spoiler territory though.
@blackpaw29 well, I know he's much further ahead than what he's posted on TH-cam, so I wasn't worried about any spoilers. As far as the asteroid goes, since they never show that it is addressed as a hazard, yet it was clearly important enough to Marco that he'd send Filip to destroy the Asami, I think it's safe to assume it's the same debris that hit the ships at the ring. Why would Marco throw an expensive, stealth-coated rock at nothing? It seems a reach to assume he missed without it being spoken about.
Small piece of Expanse foreshadowing, wayyyy back in S1E3 when Naomi was being interrogated by Lopez on the Donnager, we got a glimpse of his datapad, it listed Cyn (and Marco) as known associates of Naomi. Incredible attention to detail and plot.
There was one reactor obsessed with pausing and reading every screen and sign. Tons of stuff put in there. Anyone remember that guys name? Something with a z or x, right?
Damn...never noticed that (it is a quick piece though). Only thing I picked up on was Inaros being mentioned early on in a conversation but even that was only after a few rewatches! Love this show for all the details that are actually used down the line! No wasted stuff here like many shows!
One of the things that I love is his her Belter accent comes and goes depending on who she is with. The same as many of us who suppress our regional accent when away from home.
It hurt Filip to hear his mother, who abandoned him, try to convince him to essentially walk away from his father and his responsibilities. To him, it's like "is that the only way you know how to solve problems?" His actor not only looks like Naomi, but also like Marco. It's uncanny.
Regarding the sets, some are custom-built (like ship interiors) and others are existing buildings. Fun fact: if you look closely, you can see that the interior shots of the UN headquarters are filmed in the same building used for the interior of Vought Tower in The Boys.
_"regular pour - regular gravity..."_ Yes, regular for Mars... There is no weirdness to the gravity of a planet, but there was on Ceres because of its artificial spin-gravity. Yet the gravity on Mars is just over a third of that of Earth, so although the wine is not performing acrobatic tricks, it'll get you drunker in the end... Because on Mars, every pour is a 'light pour'. ;-]
Just on appearance, I totally buy Jasai Chase-Owens (Filip) as Naomi and Marco's son. I also once saw someone comment that he'd make a pretty good live action Miles Morales.
If you look closely at the display in front of Marco from the end of last season to now, Marco had thrown 9 rocks at Earth. The one we see brake apart was unintentional. That's why he throws 9, to maximize the chances of at least 1 getting through.
4:14 - the internal makeup of the asteroid would be difficult to ascertain without loads of test drilling - Marco rolled the dice on the rock staying together
With regards to Nancy Gao being a belter; you could not disguise the physiology of someone who went through gestation in less than a one G environment. There would definitely be physiological markers that would show up.
We already know from the last episode of last season and the first episode of this season that Marco has sent at least 9 rocks. I guess Alex was vulnerable to Babbage's enticement because of his failure to reconcile with his family. It hadn't occurred to me that she had likely taken the focus drug. The other significant woman on Drummer's crew, Oksana, is Drummer's "ankawala," which means "anchor person." Or at least she's supposed to be. IMO, Naomi didn't do a good job of explaining herself to Filip. Marco's henchwoman Karol called Filip "Boslet" instead of "Bosmang." While Marco is an experienced slingshotter, he couldn't know all the factors involved in random asteroids chosen to toss at Earth (such as composition). I would think he'd work with a number of trajectories, and the fastest (the first to strike Earth) would be the one(s) with the closest trajectories around the sun. And there are always perturbances caused by other system bodies that will affect trajectories in incalculable ways. Jupiter all by itself affects the movement of _everything_ in the solar system in some small or significant way. My point is that no matter how good a slingshotter Marco is, his calculations can't be perfect. That's why he's got several rocks on several different trajectories heading for Earth. If only one or two strikes the Earth, it will make his terrorist point. The first three episodes of this season were originally dropped at once. Knowing how these folks love their cliffhangers, I immediately figured the third episode would end with the first rock striking Earth.
@@kirkdarling4120 ankawallah is more accurately translated as "anchor lover" as "wellwallah" means "gravity well lover". Though Miller describes it's connotation as "traitor to my people" or loving those who are planet bound rather than belters, which is also accurate.
I concur doctors, the appropriate title of this episode is "Mother****er" for the scene at the end. And yeah, when the rock passes the spotter, I get shivers.
The irony is that they picked the episode before Marco and his smug bitch face really started doing his thing. It would have been better to call next week's episode "Mother" to include him in the list of things "mother" could refer to.
"I worry about people who throw rocks...." Indeed - remember the stealth tech and Mars in S01? Was this"just" Protegen building warships? *They* seemed to have no need of apropriating Martian tech.... Best regards Raoul G. Kunz
It was a Protogen misdirect at the time. They did not need the tech but they needed the powers that be to chase wrong leads. They needed the mistrust and the war to be able to operate without fear of being discovered. Mars always had higher aspirations but never dealt with the Belters until the Ring provided them with alternatives to their terraforming project. The seeds were planted for this in S01 but the belter that Avasarala interrogated was not one of Marco's because pre-Ring Mars would have never trusted belters with stealth tech. Who else did have access to that tech and stood to gain quite a bit with the belter misdirection? Only Protogen. It's entirely possible that they negotiated with Mars for this tech as part of the Caliban project but Mars itself did not give belters that tech and that is a 100% guarantee.
@@earth2saka I'm not convinced. Maybe we've discussed this before on another channel. I don't recall. Belters didn't need to work with Mars to get their stuff. Theft (and salvage) was an option too. In this episode (I think) we learn that the Tynan had Martian PDCs - the best guns in the belt. He wasn't given those, not even in a quid pro quo deal. The mentioning of Belters smuggling Martian steath composites in S1 was likely a misdirect - but for us, the audience. I don't see Heikki Sabong commiting suicide to preserve his secrets just for some money that Protogen gave him to play a role. That kind of commitment comes from deep ideology. In my opinion, the implications of the Ring Gates just provided a quicker and more likely to be successful route to enable Marco's plans. We know from Naomi he was doing very nasty stuff plenty long ago.
@@MattNolanCustom I agree. We know from the background dialog in the "Mateo Incident" that Belters were already working on a way to pelt Earth with asteroids. It's not inconceivable that Marco was already trying to steal Martian stealth technology for that reason. Also, Avasarala made the specific comment that Heikki Sabong was "well-spoken for a Belter," which suggests (as a clue to the audience) he wasn't merely a dockworking hireling, but someone deeply involved in an ideological cause.

The way orbital mechanics work it's quite hard to throw things from different directions in the way you think. The most effective way is the one depicted in the graphics where you're chucking them so that the Earth gets to the impact point just before the rock. Earth's rotation would allow them to hit different points on the planet when they get there. It's a bit like committing suicide by train, you're not going to manage it throwing yourself at the back of the train.
