    Notice that Amos initially agreed that waiting for Holden was a bad idea. It wasn’t until Sematimba pulled out his gun and threatened Naomi that he decided to act. Says a lot about the way he approaches violence and conflict in general

    • @kirkdarling4120
      @kirkdarling4120 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think Amos had been evaluating Sematimbe as possibly someone to follow...he had been going along with Sematimbe to that point and certainly wasn't firmly behind Holden yet. But of course, Naomi is firmly someone to follow and someone to protect for him, so when the gun was drawn, the story was told.

    I love what you said at 5:22, you hit the nail right on the head. I’ve seen plenty of sci-fi, but the Expanse is just a little different and so well done. That’s why it isn’t just my favorite sci-fi show, it’s my favorite tv show.
    Also the reason that Chrisjen has all of those fantastic outfits is not so that girls can like sci-fi, it’s because it’s a central part of her character. It helps her project real gravitas. When you see her, you know that she’s not someone to be messed with. You never see her wearing the same thing twice. It’s one of my favorite parts of the show.

    Yeah, they can treat cancer.
    Dunno if you've read/seen The Martian by Andy Weir, but he's done interviews on his thoughts on humans going to Mars as a long term thing. His idea for dealing with radiation in space is that we'll just get better at treating cancer - which is a wonderful / horrible engineer's "solution" to a problem.

    Re: Dawes, i think he did get the message from the anubis. It's insinuated that he reached out to Fred Johnson to go rescue Lionel Polanski, since the destruction of the Canterbury allowed for his goals of overtaking Ceres to accelerate. Julie was OPA, and useful, but he wasn't going to pass up the chance to create a home for belters just to rescue Julie after her mission. Fred had more resources, and was better equipped to handle that

    • @wetfishbits
      @wetfishbits ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No sure about that (regarding Dawes). Julie’s message stated she’s going to Eros so getting Fred to send a ship to chase after a code name not at Eros doesn’t seem right. My unsubstantiated head canon is that Dawes probably got all sort of shady ops going on and would wash his hands of any that goes wrong.

    • @kirkdarling4120
      @kirkdarling4120 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@wetfishbits In the flashback, we see Julie watching video of Dawes and Miller meeting for the first time on the docks. That would have been a news report not much later than that moment, so Julie had sent her message at the same time or even before Dawes was trying to pump Miller for information about her.
      Had he already decided to discard her, given that her mission had failed? That seems unlikely, inasmuch as she was still an active operative who could still be useful...or a loose end if she decided to turn on him. It doesn't seem likely he'd simply abandon her either way.
      Or, since he didn't know anything about the Protomolecule and her infection, was he simply waiting for his own convenient time before retrieving her?

    • @Sinewmire
      @Sinewmire ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It was too hot after the construction of the Canterbury, and Dawes didn't want to be tied to it. He fed it to Fred Johnson so he could have a couple of degrees of separation.

    30:29 oh the sweet innocence of that realisation

  • @kirkdarling4120
    @kirkdarling4120 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Every time we saw Frank DeGraaf, he was always writing with a pencil into a paper notebook...in a world where everyone used hand terminals. Avasarala knew her old friend wasn't merely eccentric. The information she got from DeGraaf corroborated Fred Johnson's statement, so Avasarala knows Johnson is telling the truth and that Errinwright is lying.
    The reason Mao said, "We got lucky" is because they'd lost track of the Anubis and the Protomolecule sample. Finding a stealth ship dead in space is nearly impossible. But "fortunately," Julie carried the Protomolecule to Eros, right where they wanted it.
    There are some characters that pretty thoroughly evil...but they always have reasonable rationales. They just do unreasonable things to attain them.
    Remember that before now, even Miller had only shot one person before. I don't think Holden actually shot anyone even in the melee escaping Eros. I think Holden is still a homicide virgin.
    You were right about the difference between Holden and Miller. Miller was a street rat on Ceres, breathing bad air, drinking bad water, and malnourished. Holden is a test tube baby with perfect genetics, raised in a pristine environment on an organic farm.
    You are also right about Amos, and you're noting specific things very insightfully, connecting the dots. Yep, you watch Amos' eyes. Wes Chatham plays that part to perfection. BTW, Wes had been a fan of the books before the series, and his favorite character had been Amos. Wes also conferred with a psychologist to perfect his representation of the kind of person Amos is.
    As a reminder, the first book ends at the middle of season 2.

    • @AngeloBarovierSD
      @AngeloBarovierSD ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I believe Holden did shoot people in the melee. Probably mostly suppressive fire but he was also using a "low" velocity (safe for space vessels) gun against medium grade armour.
      He's a good enough shot that he'd go for centre mass, thus similar to hitting people in a bulletproof vest. Hurt/stun but not kill.
      On the other hand, Miller is Mr. Headshot. Not only is he mad/unbothered due to grief, he knows who he's shooting. They were ruthless even without the bio-conspiracy and mass murder. "You get a headshot, and you get a headshot, and you get a headshot..."

I'm not standing up for him - it's been a while since I felt that insulted by something not specifically addressed to me - but he was definitely kissing your butt along with the analysis. The distinction just made it that much weirder and more condescending. I still can't even. As I said in the thread... if you're going to pretend I'm that shallow, at least just accuse me of watching for the hot guys. That's way more realistic than for a single character's wardrobe!

    It's a little touch, but Miller touching his lips as he's imagining Julie, that's actually a belter handsign. It's used several times in the season by that prostitute to Havelock as he's in the hospital, Bosch, the guy that Miller interrogates and asks if they were fucking, he does it unconsciously as well.
    It's really cool how they have stuff down to friggin' hand gestures that is ingrained in the belter culture. Supposedly they're for long distance communication in space, and that "touching lips" gesture means "I love you".

    Armchair psychoanalysis of Amos seems to be a second career for lots of fans of the Expanse. He doesn't require time on anybody's couch. The most obvious explanation for his mode of handling life is that he has learned, probably the hard way, that brute force and killing is a highly effective method of dispute resolution. That realization does not make him a monster or a brute or somebody in need of time on a shrink's couch.

    Yeah, that's another great aspect of The Expanse for me, they don't shove race or sexual orientations down your throat like many shows try to do, which in my eyes is just making people resent it more and puts it more as something special (positive or negative)... Which it shouldn't be, it should not be present as something special but instead just shown without any elevation. That makes it appear as something more normal.
