As someone who is pursuing a career in medicine and who also has an ADHD diagnosis, I want to address some potentially dangerous implications about how physicians view this disorder based on this video. (NOTE: this info is based on my own knowledge from my B.S. in Neuroscience as well as personal research and discussions with my pychiatrist).
I would be careful to say that you can summarize the ADHD experience into the gif presented at 1:53. In fact, much of the time this typical “bouncing off the walls” energy is not immediately apparent in ADHD individuals, and is one of the main causes of under-diagnosis. ADHD typically presents in 3 distinct manners: Hyperactive-Impulsive, Inattentive, and a Combination of the two. Inattentive types are much less prone to hyperactivity, and thus these individuals are often looked over in the clinical/educational setting.
These diagnostic trends are especially important to consider for women, as we are socialized from a young age to suppress our ADHD symptoms or impulsive behaviors while young boys are free to be as hyperactive as they please. Due to this, and due to the fact that there is not enough research on ADHD presentation in women, it is also dangerous to imply that men are more prone to this disorder 3:14 (diagnosis is more readily given to men, thus it LOOKS like they are more prone. But this conclusion neglects to consider the confounding variables I have mentioned above. More research MUST be done on this.)
In terms of causes, while it is highly improbable that we will ever identify a DIRECT cause to a disorder like ADHD, there are factors that do increase the likelihood for one to develop the disorder. For example, there is evidence to suggest that ADHD does have a genetic component. On top of that, many children with ADHD are actually born premature (I myself was 1.5 months early). In my personal opinion, this makes sense as premature infants would be less physically developed than their to-term peers, allowing for the development of neurotransmitter deficiencies/synaptic dysregulation.
Lastly, despite all of this, I really wish the video would have emphasized one of the most important components of this disorder: impaired executive function!! The human brain’s executive functioning system can influence impulse control, emotional regulation, organization, attention/focus, task initiation and task prioritization. Ask any ADHDer and they will tell you that they have a problem with at least one of these components to executive function.
Sorry for such a long comment, but I am very passionate about this issue. Inaccuracies to how ADHD is viewed in the medical field is what led me to suffer for 22 years of my life before I got my diagnosis. I understand that it would be hard to squeeze all this info into a short video, but I’m sure there are ways to slightly modify or alter this explanation so that we can avoid these inaccuracies. At the end of the day, it will not only improve overall patient care/satisfaction, but it will work to dispel the huge stigma that ADHD still has in society today.

heres the thing, fellow ADHD medical professional, this isn't meant to be an explanation of ADHD. this is asummary of ADHD points for the USMLE. those are two different things. The exam does not accurately reflect real world conditions 100% of the time. Also, this is a 10:54 video. There are all literal thousands of pages published each year regarding ADHD.

@@BleachBrownie that’s because science isn’t always fact, science changes like politics for the worse or the better but of course you could never convince a doctor this who was brain washed into believing everything they read in college (these doctors exist) and have no experience with their medications, almost none. My confidence in my knowledge comes from my experiences, not a degree. Once you become a lab rat you get enlightened

The info from this video is almost directly out of the first aid for the usmle step one. If you have anything that you feel is inaccurate you should tell the people that print the bible of medical school because all our practice questions are based of this exact info.

@@BleachBrownie That's so sad... how they wouldn't reflect the real world ADHD even in such simple things such as... it's so misleading to word it as "difficulty paying attention" when it's more of a difficulty to control your attention. The term "hyperfocus" that's coined was the first argument my head came up with against me potentionally having it. I was like "bro I can't have ADHD, I'm often enough the most well focused person in the room and am impatiently bored here waiting for eveyone else to FINALLY arrive here mentally"

You mentioned stimulants increase Dopamine and NE activity but later you mention Dopamine and Serotonin, so is it all 3 neurotransmitters that are being increased ?

Dopamine and Norepinephrine levels are not increased, but decreased in ADHD. It would be more accurate to say their level is dysregulated - their level is not enough. That is why the treatment is CNS stimulants like Adderall, Ritalin and etc... content of the video needs improvements.

Love these vids bro! Salam from a college student studying Neuro. Quick question, im an emt and applying to some clinical tech and scribe jobs. I also volunteer a lot non medically. Im looking for research with my professors. Are there any other extracurriculars that I should do for med school in order to have a good shot of getting in? Thanks brother

Yo! Haha thanks for the support my man! I appreciate it a lot. I think you’re doing a pretty good job at the moment. Medical schools like to see someone with a good amount of volunteer experience, which clearly you have and research experience, which I know you’re gonna end up getting. And the fact that you’re also looking for a clinical experience right now really looks good. And EMT or clinical tech position let you get really good meaningful medical experience so I think that’s a great idea. I think if you can get some leader ship experience that would definitely help. Now of course you don’t want to do too much too fast so one thing you could do is take some time and work at the EMT position or the clinical tech position and then try to move up and become promoted as a team lead or a manager if you can. Another way you could do that is if you’re involved with clubs on campus, try to become a member of the leadership board. All of these things showed that not only do you have all the experiences but you’re also a leader, which is something that is very important when it comes to Being a physician. I also want to stress that if you can, kill two birds with one stone. What I mean is try to knock out your requirements by doing two things at once. When I was an undergrad, I volunteered at a free medical clinic. Because of that I was able to not only write about my volunteer experiences but I was also able to write about my clinical experiences from one experience. In fact, I also did research at that free clinic and I ended up leading a team in that research so I got lucky because from one experience I was able to talk about clinical, volunteer, leader ship, and research experience. That might not happen for you to that extent (I got REALLY lucky lol) but if you can find something that checks multiple boxes, then do it! I’ll make your undergrad a heck of a lot easier
