I had a high ankle sprain like this back in high school a few years ago while playing a basketball game. Couldn’t put any weight on it for 2 weeks and couldn’t start running till about a month later, the fact that Pat is still playing with this shows his toughness. This injury is no joke

During his press conference, he said it didn’t feel too bad. He’s had one before, so I trust him to know if it’s particularly bad. I mean, he took the time (10 minutes) to stand & talk with reporters after the game. I’m sure adrenaline helped him & it will be pretty sore tomorrow. The biggest issue is the risk or re-aggravating it. Props to him for wanting to be back on the field, but his play understandably suffered due to the ankle. Most times, he's good enough that a small drop off isn't consequential. But it will be interesting to see if his game is modified and the ankle inhibits him aside from re-injuring.

If you go back to 2019 opening day, he had a similar thing happen and likely the same injury. It was inside the pocket, but he got rolled up from the side.
He didnt miss a start, and did play well in spite of obvious hampered mobility. You could tell even weeks later he was playing on a bad wheel. This one seems worse. He was injured. This isnt going away before the superbowl. He either sits out or plays hurt.
You know who they played when he got injured in 2019? Jacksonville.

The guy's not much for setting his feet anyway and he can make a pure arm throw with more zip than probably 80% of NFL QBs using perfect form. If anyone can adjust to being essentially one-legged, it's going to be a guy like that. He made some fine throws in the second half. He's a fast healer and tough as an old prize fighter. Bet he's back and ready to roll next week, at least 85% of his typical mobility.

    • Sin Dilacion
      Sin Dilacion 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

@Professor Wiggins Lectures you're giving a him a floor of 85% mobility on a high ankle sprain in 7 days time and that's without physical contact. Is that better for you?

    • Professor Wiggins Lectures
      Professor Wiggins Lectures 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

@Sin Dilacion I'll clarify. I didn't say his ankle would be 85%, I said his mobility overall would be 85%. There is fortunately more to his physique that his ankle and he will likely be jacked up on pain killer, tight wraps and pure raw adrenaline. In any event, I'll bet my expertise on the physique of one of the most flexible and athletic quarterbacks in history after eight day's rest and rehab is just as good or bad as yours. BTW, yes, I have had a high ankle sprain when competing in sports.

Hey Brian, first time caller long time listener. I’m just wondering how taping his ankle effects the structures in the ankle? It looks like he can put much more weight and pressure on the ankle with it taped so heavily. Sort of just wondering the medical science behind that

It helps stabilize the ankle, keeps it all together when taking in weight.

    • TheDeadp00l
      TheDeadp00l 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

With the high angle Spring the main pain is from the 2 bones trying to split away from each other and that can happen if you plant your foot too hard onto the ground that force can push apart the bones but with the tape it holds them in place and then the ligament feels more stable. There is definitely a worry if you twist or roll your foot when you have it taped up because you could still be twisted that could be catastrophic.

    • pretzelhunt
      pretzelhunt 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

Same as putting chocolate shell on an M&M. It holds it all tightly together, and doesnt allow for further flexion, and, hopefully, no further injury (stabilizes it in an encasement). all that swelling compresses away from the injury so it doesnt impede movement more than existing swelling already did.

All reports said that he is not ruled out. He will probably play because of the magnitude of the game. We also saw that his sidearm throw became ineffective in the second half but the forward throws were good. Does that indicate an MCL strain of some sort, combined with the high ankle strain? It is a very serious injury for sure.

Mahomes has come out and said he is definitely playing next week (which we all assumed he would regardless of the injury because he is that much of a player), but that ankle definitely impacted his play throughout the rest of the game. Great Video! So helpful to understand the biology of sports! I'm a huge Disc Golf fan, BTW, and an active player, too! At 63 years old, I'm really enjoying how the back-hand-right-hand throw, when done smoothly, generates incredible speed and power and is a smooth as silk to all the physiology (muscles, ligaments, yadda yadda yadda :)). The sport is wonderful in that it is so universally accessible - any size, share, age, can generate power immediately.. with that smooth, whole-body motion. Would love to see a video on disc golf... ! 🙂

I understand why he did. I think if they were up 2-3 scores and defense was dominating, then maybe he sits for a bit and feels it out. But he knew that on one leg, he’s still the best QB on the field. Dangerous, but I get it. They probably don’t win that game if he sits out. That’s the “team took care of me” kinda grit. I hope he’s alright and that he does what’s best for the injury, but I’m sure he’d go out there in a full cast before he misses the Bengals game.

Fell from the top of a wall in a bouldering gym, there was a girl standing underneath me, I had to adjust my fall in mid air to avoid landing on her head so I was focused on not hurting her and not focused on my landing, ankle landed first and bent exacly like how his ankle bent in the video, bent out and up, felt pain all up my shin, couldn't walk right for months.

The concept of saving the athlete (pro or not) from themself should always be a priority. Unfortunately, that's not always the case. Competitive people want to stay in the game even if there will be more damage done because they don't care in the heat of the moment. Essentially "pain is temporary, glory is forever" especially in the post-season. Also, many people in society have this belief of being tough, a badass, etc when playing through an injury as a badge of honor. The problem is that it's only praised when you win. If you lose, people will just think you're dumb.

He’s lucky not to suffer broken bones like Tony Pollard or Dak Prescott. When you watch the video of the tackle you have to wonder if the defensive player was doing it intentionally to knock Mahomes out of the game. Then when the backup quarterback came in they immediately took a head shot at him.

@The Fresh Prince of No hair That is typically a 4-6 week injury. He will be very compromised next week. And whoever they play will know it.

I understand that Mahomes wanted to keep playing, but it seems like he was putting himself above the team. It's like saying that even playing when injured he felt he could do a better job than the backup quarterback. I kept expecting the coach to bench him.

Its ok Doc, quarter backs don’t need their legs. Philip Rivers and Others have proven that. They need their arms and upper body mostly.

    • MrDufDaddy
      MrDufDaddy 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I think it actually shows you how much variability there is to everything that happens on the field. The forces in play may look the same but could be wildly different. The angle of which the defender impacted each ankle, the force of impact would change based on the size of the defender and the speed he was moving, the individual's bone strength, etc there are so many micro factors in play. I mean, just look at the hit that nearly killed Hamlin...thousands and thousands of players have been hit the same way, but that one in a million shot turned his heart off.

Finally someone is saying it, even as chiefs fan, I think Mahomes is being stupid, yes it is his body, but he has a family and this injury is not career threatening, but if he keeps playing with it he could end up with irreversible damage, that could end up being career ending

  • Rell

It’s not a bad idea, lol. It’s what you do when you’re in his position. He’s going to be fine and probably still win it all based on who’s left.

  • JB II
    JB II 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Andy Reid already said that Mahomes was going to play. Not surprised they would throw him out there to win the game. After all this is the same Head Coach who after his son overdosed and was in the hospital decided that the next day it was a good idea to coach a PRE-season game with the Eagles. So we can see where his loyalty lies.
As for those saying he gutted the 2nd half out, he was most definitely shot up with a pain killer, you could see as he was moving much better in the 3rd quarter but by time the mid 4th quarter rolled around he was in obvious pain and had limited mobility.
This is the same thing they’ll do this week, painkiller before the game then another shot or two at halftime. Is it really worth the man’s long term health?

What I am confused with it why they didn’t make wear a knee and ankle brace as an extra precaution. And instead just taped the outside of the shoe I feel like a brace would have given more support and prevent further injury.

The fact that they didn't rule him out just shows how messed up the NFL is... First it as Tua's "back injury" earlier this year. I'm sure the Chiefs will give him a steroid shot, a localized pain injection, and tape the heck out of that joint for the rest of the year. They'll lose next week against either the Bills or the Bengals though. Just hope it does ruin his next year by trying to play on it.

I also thought it was a bad idea they continued to play him. Even more so after Henne just took em down the field and scored. Then to see him in at the end of the game when they're up 10 with under 3 min to go, they're just being Dumb!
