How do you do this so fast? 😭 So much respect Dr Sutterer
Wdym? It’s super easy
@Frank Yammy Do it yourself then
Exactly with all the edits I wonder how he does it
Think he uploaded this when the initial injury happened but just changed the title to fit that he’s playing again.
I had a high ankle sprain like this back in high school a few years ago while playing a basketball game. Couldn’t put any weight on it for 2 weeks and couldn’t start running till about a month later, the fact that Pat is still playing with this shows his toughness. This injury is no joke
And painkillers....
@Chrisgtoman the shot
may be ... just may be ... this isn't a high ankle sprain?
@asterx_obelix there’s a chance that’s true. But it won’t grab you views.
Also shows that he has no idea how much of a mistake it is to keep playing
Thanks for being such a lightning fast medical analyst (& responsible doctor for injuries like the commotio cordis)
Well he wants that money, thats why he posts
@Frank Yammy I don’t care
@Pancho wdym? I’m a big fan of his. Man is incredibly smart and successful. Projecting much?
@Frank Yammy He is not making any meaningful amount of money from these videos I'm afraid. TH-cam isn't what it used to be
Still led them to victory off adrenaline and will alone, but he’s definitely going to feel this in the morning..
During his press conference, he said it didn’t feel too bad. He’s had one before, so I trust him to know if it’s particularly bad. I mean, he took the time (10 minutes) to stand & talk with reporters after the game. I’m sure adrenaline helped him & it will be pretty sore tomorrow. Hopefully it doesn’t stiffen up too much on him. 🤞
@Golden Age of Dinosaurs yep..I know when I played through an injury, that morning after is a bitch lol hope he’s ok though!
Drugs.
This happened to me from bboying. I was able to walk normally for the rest of the day, and then the next day it swelled up real bad. It was throbbing so bad I couldn’t sleep at nights lol. It took like 4 months before I can run confidently again
@Elly Richardson how did u injure it?
I had similar feelings just from having one myself and then playing soccer on it. I was great the day of…didn’t walk right for over a month. I was 26…but also just a rec-league soccer player with a job in an office. I hope he gets better, OR the Chiefs are smart enough to trust their team and backup QB!
An an anatomy professor, I knew a video on this would be posted before the game even ended. Good job!
Quiet
@Marcus welby ? what
what does you being a professor have to do with the timing of a video being posted?
As a customer service agent I knew the same thing would happen.
@M probably more about the "anatomy" than the "professor"
Why acting so insecure?
I love your videos Brian. It’s always good to see some explanation on the bad injuries we all see in sports
Football players are notoriously bad at thinking long term about their health.
They think about it, but bones heal. Muscles heal. BY the time they get old, we will probably be bionic anyway.
Of course they are. If they were good at it they wouldn't be playing.
I blame the staff
@Itheuser First Maybe, but there is no guarantee modern medicine will be that sophisticated to include bionics that erase years of damage from playing football.
He actually explained how Pollard from the Cowboys suffered a high ankle sprain but also broke his leg on a similar tackle. Great job, Doc!
You've got one of the best things going on TH-cam. Great, great channel. Your speed is amazing and sets you apart from so many other commentators. One of the networks should put you on retainer as a sports-medicine doctor/commentator, even if it was to purchase and use your content in their broadcast.
No, the networks would want THEIR spin, resulting in a poorer product; so-to-speak. Doc is great as is.
I played through a high ankle sprain in high school, I played surprisingly well with it but it definitely made me more vulnerable. Probably came back a bit too early too, only missed one game after, but luckily I didn’t mess it up more and it healed
MaHomes is a wonderful Quarterback, and seeing him hurt, breaks my heart!
@Dewknow He's going to be fine! The Chiefs might have to rotate Quarterbacks next week to make sure he doesn't break it or gets an even worse injury
Nah he’s good. Let him play 😈
Start Chad henne
The biggest issue is the risk or re-aggravating it. Props to him for wanting to be back on the field, but his play understandably suffered due to the ankle. Most times, he's good enough that a small drop off isn't consequential. But it will be interesting to see if his game is modified and the ankle inhibits him aside from re-injuring.
I had one of these a few months ago. Still not 100%. Hurt it playing basketball for my school. I couldn’t play for 4 weeks, this just shows how tough Mahomes is
If you go back to 2019 opening day, he had a similar thing happen and likely the same injury. It was inside the pocket, but he got rolled up from the side.
He didnt miss a start, and did play well in spite of obvious hampered mobility. You could tell even weeks later he was playing on a bad wheel. This one seems worse. He was injured. This isnt going away before the superbowl. He either sits out or plays hurt.
You know who they played when he got injured in 2019? Jacksonville.
I remember that game pretty well Nick foles broke his collarbone in that game
@dead zone312 Yeah, that did happen!
Tyreek hill dislocated his collarbone and had to be taken to the hospital before the game ended as well.
I broke my foot last summer and didn’t know for almost 3 weeks 😅 had an avulsion fracture but it really wasn’t that painful. Hopefully he avoided any bone breaks or ligament tears. Go Pat!
He prepares a video for every possible injury to every player. That's how he gets these videos out so fast
Nah but dude probably has the camera, lighting, computer, and business clothes ready to go every game 😂
The guy's not much for setting his feet anyway and he can make a pure arm throw with more zip than probably 80% of NFL QBs using perfect form. If anyone can adjust to being essentially one-legged, it's going to be a guy like that. He made some fine throws in the second half. He's a fast healer and tough as an old prize fighter. Bet he's back and ready to roll next week, at least 85% of his typical mobility.
Id say 65% at best it’s the right foot
85% on a high ankle sprain in 7 days? 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 if he didn't play qb he would have not finished the game nor would he be playing in the next one.
@Sin Dilacion I think the quality of a person's comments is inversely proportional to the number of laughing emojis they have to post in a pathetic attempt to make their "point."
@Professor Wiggins Lectures you're giving a him a floor of 85% mobility on a high ankle sprain in 7 days time and that's without physical contact. Is that better for you?
@Sin Dilacion I'll clarify. I didn't say his ankle would be 85%, I said his mobility overall would be 85%. There is fortunately more to his physique that his ankle and he will likely be jacked up on pain killer, tight wraps and pure raw adrenaline. In any event, I'll bet my expertise on the physique of one of the most flexible and athletic quarterbacks in history after eight day's rest and rehab is just as good or bad as yours. BTW, yes, I have had a high ankle sprain when competing in sports.
Hey Brian, first time caller long time listener. I’m just wondering how taping his ankle effects the structures in the ankle? It looks like he can put much more weight and pressure on the ankle with it taped so heavily. Sort of just wondering the medical science behind that
good question, I wonder if its just a placebo effect or it actually does something
It helps stabilize the ankle, keeps it all together when taking in weight.
With the high angle Spring the main pain is from the 2 bones trying to split away from each other and that can happen if you plant your foot too hard onto the ground that force can push apart the bones but with the tape it holds them in place and then the ligament feels more stable. There is definitely a worry if you twist or roll your foot when you have it taped up because you could still be twisted that could be catastrophic.
Same as putting chocolate shell on an M&M. It holds it all tightly together, and doesnt allow for further flexion, and, hopefully, no further injury (stabilizes it in an encasement). all that swelling compresses away from the injury so it doesnt impede movement more than existing swelling already did.
It basically just makes the ankle and foot a solid block to run around and walk around on, prevent bending
Let it get better, I love watching you play! You are a great quarterback!
Who are you talking too?
Whenever I think of players playing with a significant structural injury I think of Robert Griffin III. He never really recovered from his ligament injuries that he tried to play on in that Wild Card game against Seattle. Mahomes does have to think of the long fantastic career he has ahead of him.
So he's played in the 2nd half. Would there be an update to this depending on the development throughout the coming week?
We came here as soon as he got hurt 😆
Will you do an update video since he returned relatively quick?
Hopefully KC will release something useful about that injury
Doc Brian is the best, always on time giving useful info for all of us as sport fanatics🤞greetings from Chile 🇨🇱
I played through a similar injury back in highschool it hurt really bad but I didn't quit then I did powerlifting for state title and lifted through multiple tears I took pain pills or made it hurt until it was numb then got surgery during the summer when I did this i was 17-18 now I'm 20 have healed and gotten better
All reports said that he is not ruled out. He will probably play because of the magnitude of the game. We also saw that his sidearm throw became ineffective in the second half but the forward throws were good. Does that indicate an MCL strain of some sort, combined with the high ankle strain? It is a very serious injury for sure.
Really shows you how much of a drug adrenaline really is. Also mahomes is a WARRIOR
My bet is that adrenaline is not the only drug involved. My bet is that when he went back into the locker room they gave him a shot of pain killer.
Shows you how good Toradol is.
More like percocet in the locker room lol
@NWI Steel paging dr cortisone
Yep x-ray confirmed it is a high ankle sprain. Mahomes has come out and said he is definitely playing next week (which we all assumed he would regardless of the injury because he is that much of a player), but that ankle definitely impacted his play throughout the rest of the game. Will be interesting to see how impactful the injury is next week!
will it be 100% in a week?
Z ray can only confirm it's nor broken.
@S P Absolutely not LOL but he will still play through the pain. Luckily he doesn't rely on his legs that much so he can still be insanely impactful to his team
@roudyman777 he definitely relies on his legs to extend plays or scramble for long first downs
@roudyman777 the game plan is to literally keep him in the pocket.
I’ve had a few sprains as a kid and teen in sports. And both left me on crutches for weeks. How these guys are playing right after us nuts…
Pain killers and anaesthetics
I can only imagine the pain he feels once those meds wear off.
You’ve never had an ankle sprain?
Every ankle sprain I've had, low or high, seemed like the pain was very bad right after the injury, and more awkward, less mobility 24 to 48 hours out. Once you find out there isn't any fracture, it's all about treatment and stretching. You gotta tough it out to do what you can do.
Yeah it’s gotta be rough! It’s not like he plays for an NFL team with dozens of athletic trainers and the best on-site medical facility money can buy! oh wait 💁🏻♂️
As always, thanks for the clear concise information sir...no better channel for sports medicine information I guarantee it!!
In my experience the classic inversion sprain when fairly severe is most likely accompanied by a high ankle sprain also.
Great Video! So helpful to understand the biology of sports! I'm a huge Disc Golf fan, BTW, and an active player, too! At 63 years old, I'm really enjoying how the back-hand-right-hand throw, when done smoothly, generates incredible speed and power and is a smooth as silk to all the physiology (muscles, ligaments, yadda yadda yadda :)). The sport is wonderful in that it is so universally accessible - any size, share, age, can generate power immediately.. with that smooth, whole-body motion. Would love to see a video on disc golf... ! 🙂
I’m sure the NFL will be completely transparent with us and do what’s best for Patrick!
Thoughts on him being considered probable for next week after the high ankle sprain diagnosis?
I understand why he did. I think if they were up 2-3 scores and defense was dominating, then maybe he sits for a bit and feels it out. But he knew that on one leg, he’s still the best QB on the field. Dangerous, but I get it. They probably don’t win that game if he sits out. That’s the “team took care of me” kinda grit. I hope he’s alright and that he does what’s best for the injury, but I’m sure he’d go out there in a full cast before he misses the Bengals game.
As a Radiologic Technologist, I really appreciate these videos and the detail. Thanks, Doc!
I've had a sprain on one event and a break off another on a very similar rotation. The sprain hurt worse than the break for me.
High ankle sprain, that's a nasty injury. I got one once. Fell from the top of a wall in a bouldering gym, there was a girl standing underneath me, I had to adjust my fall in mid air to avoid landing on her head so I was focused on not hurting her and not focused on my landing, ankle landed first and bent exacly like how his ankle bent in the video, bent out and up, felt pain all up my shin, couldn't walk right for months.
Can’t convince me bro not living 3 hours ahead of the entire world
Dude he is toast as far as mobility goes. He will not be what he could of been had he just gotten off the field. Trust me because I got a high ankle sprain playing in high school and I feel the stability is worse on my right foot because of it when moving side to side fast
Nothing stopping this man he’s on a mission he will be ready next week
I hope he'll be ready next week, I don't want the Chiefs fans to have any excuses when they lose.
@Josh Allen needs an o-line dw u wont make it to next wk
@Ali You're saying I'm going to die before next week? That's pretty dark.
@Ali Yup we played like trash on both sides of the ball I ain't even gonna lie.
The concept of saving the athlete (pro or not) from themself should always be a priority. Unfortunately, that's not always the case. Competitive people want to stay in the game even if there will be more damage done because they don't care in the heat of the moment. Essentially "pain is temporary, glory is forever" especially in the post-season. Also, many people in society have this belief of being tough, a badass, etc when playing through an injury as a badge of honor. The problem is that it's only praised when you win. If you lose, people will just think you're dumb.
I am surprised the Cheifs let him go out there again. The team is heavily invested in his future with his 10 year contract. I get the team, and Pat wants to win now, but if he further injures himself to the point it shortens his career, it won't be worth it.
The chiefs training staff is regarded as the best in the NFL so if they thought he shouldn’t play they wouldn’t let him back in the game
Donovan McNabb played on a broken ankle in 2002. I’m curious to know how badly that could’ve gone for him.
Hey Doc , can you cover Novak Djokovic hamstring injury in Australian open now. Very interesting case as Gebiss still playing with it and it’s a grand slam to become the most decorated player of all times in Tennis
They gotta have this man work for a network, commentating during games so that a wider audience can know these finer details. Kind of like gene steratore with crucial calls during the game.
I've more than my share of these injuries. And I have no idea how he got back on the field. Like the doc said, just the stiffening alone should've kept him on the side line.
I'm pretty sure just about everyone is seeing that we are halfway through the third and he's on the field. Interesting decision, let's see how that works out for him
Pure respect for PM. That Fn hurts a lot.
This is so sad but right now he’s playing and doing great
Doing great a bit of a stretch, dude can barely hand it off
He ain’t doing great he’s limping😂
He needs to be resting and taken off for this season. Otherwise he is risking his football career. Next games will be painful if he plays them.
He had a higher completion rate of 10/12 after the injury than previously, so uh yeah he is playing great amidst injury 😂
@Rafa Calvo his mobility wasnt doing great, but after that first drive back, dude was on it. After the game, he had no boot and was walking without any assistance. Like i said, the dude is gumby.
Hey Doc I heard he's back in the game but definitely gonna feel that when he's 50
And lol
Exactly what happens to people who serve in the military.
He’s lucky not to suffer broken bones like Tony Pollard or Dak Prescott. When you watch the video of the tackle you have to wonder if the defensive player was doing it intentionally to knock Mahomes out of the game. Then when the backup quarterback came in they immediately took a head shot at him.
Those injuries that you work/play through when you're young are really a pain when you get older .
McHomes is still out there playing without being to use his plant foot. Still getting it done. He is the man.
Yea, may as well tear it the rest of the way.
Till the Toroidal wears off anyway. Be bawling like a baby then.
that "run" in the 3rd quarter was not a good idea!
He looks very comprised
@The Fresh Prince of No hair That is typically a 4-6 week injury. He will be very compromised next week. And whoever they play will know it.
And he won’t have that adrenaline rush to help him. He’s going to be a hurting unit.
Hope he can well for the start of next season!
Dr. Quick to post. You a real one sir. Appreciate all the high quality content.
He’s playing. Like a boss.
I've seen your reviews too many lol. The moment I saw this I worried high ankle and knee(MCL,ACL) based on the fashion it got twisted.
Same haha I turned to my girlfriend right away and said “that’s probably a high ankle sprain”
After watching this I deserve an honorary doctorate. Shoutout to you doc.
I understand that Mahomes wanted to keep playing, but it seems like he was putting himself above the team. It's like saying that even playing when injured he felt he could do a better job than the backup quarterback. I kept expecting the coach to bench him.
The fact he is playing, holy smokes. Way to grind
Its ok Doc, quarter backs don’t need their legs. Philip Rivers and Others have proven that. They need their arms and upper body mostly.
Running or anyone else are out for the game. Pollard just left the game for the same injury (ankle eversion), I hope it is not broken.
He doesn't care if it's a bad idea. it's the playoffs. This is what they work their ENTIRE LIVES for. He can be the judge of his ability to play if it isn't head-related.
What are your thoughts on Mahomes coming back to play out the rest of the second half?
This video shows how Arden Key actually tried to shift a bit before landing and there was nothing dirty about the tackle
I wanna know how/why there was a bigger injury sustained in the identical play today with Tony Pollard. How something happens to one person and doesn't to another is wild.
I think it actually shows you how much variability there is to everything that happens on the field. The forces in play may look the same but could be wildly different. The angle of which the defender impacted each ankle, the force of impact would change based on the size of the defender and the speed he was moving, the individual's bone strength, etc there are so many micro factors in play. I mean, just look at the hit that nearly killed Hamlin...thousands and thousands of players have been hit the same way, but that one in a million shot turned his heart off.
Mahomes is a tough dude, i don’t know what they shot in to his ankle at half time but it looks like it at least somewhat worked
Take a look and please report on the Tony Pollard injury. Thank you for great content 🏈
Thank you for explaining this injury
Never even been to college and thought he should've been ruled out, especially since henne proved competent enough to win the game.
Thanks for the info Doc. Probably made your day when Pat got hurt…
By any chance can you break down a soccer players recent injury where he suffered a leg fracture during Melbourne City vs Adelaide United, minutes after being subbed on. The player’s name is Juande Prados
Confirmed high ankle sprain. Still give him props for his fortitude
Finally someone is saying it, even as chiefs fan, I think Mahomes is being stupid, yes it is his body, but he has a family and this injury is not career threatening, but if he keeps playing with it he could end up with irreversible damage, that could end up being career ending
It’s not a bad idea, lol. It’s what you do when you’re in his position. He’s going to be fine and probably still win it all based on who’s left.
Andy Reid already said that Mahomes was going to play. Not surprised they would throw him out there to win the game. After all this is the same Head Coach who after his son overdosed and was in the hospital decided that the next day it was a good idea to coach a PRE-season game with the Eagles. So we can see where his loyalty lies.
As for those saying he gutted the 2nd half out, he was most definitely shot up with a pain killer, you could see as he was moving much better in the 3rd quarter but by time the mid 4th quarter rolled around he was in obvious pain and had limited mobility.
This is the same thing they’ll do this week, painkiller before the game then another shot or two at halftime. Is it really worth the man’s long term health?
You should cover Mikey Musumeci's leg lock of Gantumur Bayanduuren at One Championship from the other weekend.
Continued to play and was looking a bit better by the end of the game
So in a billion dollar league the "Dr's" have no clue what a Knee/ankle injury is or a concussion. Well done Roger well done
Mahomes still the best QB in the league on 1 leg
Yes he came back and played the entire 2nd half !!!!!
What I am confused with it why they didn’t make wear a knee and ankle brace as an extra precaution. And instead just taped the outside of the shoe I feel like a brace would have given more support and prevent further injury.
Patrick Mahomes is the one legged man that wins an *ss kicking contest.
When it happened it jumped off my couch and said: that shyt was on purpose, and further examination of the video confirmed this. The DL collapsed down onto Mahomes’ ankle intentionally, even looked for it when he was fallen. What a filthy-azz play. Disgusting. 💀
My man always has a shirt and tie ready to roll at a minutes notice lol good on ya Doc!
They should have Brian Sutterer live with the commentators !
I hope, hope, hope, you’re wrong about a high ankle sprain. Sorry, Doc. We need Patty Pat! Thanks for your generally spot on assessments, though.
And still throws a TD in the 4th quarter
He played the game, refs helped him but I don’t know how he’s gonna play against the eagles. No clue if 2 weeks is enough after how much pain he must of felt
He’s a fucking warrior. He never quits..
Everyone knows that at halftime he must of had injections of painkillers - it wasn’t just adrenaline and grit.
Interested to hear the follow up since he did go back out
@ArtandArchitecture But played on it, and was later seen at a St Louis Blues game later tha tnight. It clearly isn't a very BAD sprain if he's able to walk on it unaided.
@ArtandArchitecture yes clearly he's not going to be at 100%. But I'll take mahomes at 75% over almost anyone else at 100
Damn that's exactly how I broke my leg
The fact that they didn't rule him out just shows how messed up the NFL is... First it as Tua's "back injury" earlier this year. I'm sure the Chiefs will give him a steroid shot, a localized pain injection, and tape the heck out of that joint for the rest of the year. They'll lose next week against either the Bills or the Bengals though. Just hope it does ruin his next year by trying to play on it.
That’s what the great ones do, they play!!!
How can he play next week, as he states, and what kind of ankle protection could be used?
It’s true he could be really hurt but is it true that 2 players could be hit the exact same way and 1 could be hurt and the other might be fine
As a Chiefs fan I was saying "Just put Henne in!"
I also thought it was a bad idea they continued to play him. Even more so after Henne just took em down the field and scored. Then to see him in at the end of the game when they're up 10 with under 3 min to go, they're just being Dumb!
