    I just love the deep, rich colours that the 1DX produces.

      Thanks for watching. The colours do look great from the 1Dx, with very little editing needed either👍🏻

    I was a rugby shooter for ten years. My approach to the shoot is very much similar to yours. I like the way you document the scene prior to the match. You may never need them but sometimes having one boring shot of an empty pitch is exactly what that art director was looking for as a cover shot. You can have a great shot of players frozen in the air with facial expressions worthy of Hollywood and the editor choses instead an empty pitch for the cover so he can overlay text. Chagrinned, I'll take the check anyway and sell may "masterpiece" down the street. 🙄

    Great story Mark. And, yes, insurance is vital - not just on equipment but for personal injury. A few years ago I dropped my 1DX with 24-105 attached onto the concrete stands while stupidly trying to clamber over the advertising hoarding at Bath FC. The lens separated itself from the body - it's always the lens that suffers not the body. Anyway, insurance sorted it without any fuss or bother. Great advice!

    I can understand pro shooters using jpeg because of the faster image processing in camera, file sizes and the need to send images off. As a keen amateur I have the luxury of being able to use raw to enable more flexibility in post processing.

    • @chankwanting

      You also need to consider the possibility of hitting the buffer. If there's scenarios where you're going to need to keep bursting for extended amount of time like the goal celebration described in the video, waiting for the buffer to clear is not what one wants to be doing. If that's not an issue, great.

    • @MarkKerton

    I saw a news teams outside the local steel works. A camera man had put down his 400mm on the ground on a central reservation of the works entrance. A works lorry drove up and a rolling cloud of road dust funnelled right down his lens. That stuff is a mixture of dirt, concrete, coal dust, ironstone and rust. Sure it must have sandblasted his lens.

    Insurance. I cover Wessex League for a local paper and paid. Wessex is 5 & 6 in non league or 9 & 10 in football leagues level. The league know I have a £5million Public Liability, but a few years ago, a player got injured. Photographer never had any insurance, and the player lost money through his injury of hitting the photographer and kit, so then onwards, no photography pitch side for Wessex matches. Also, worthwhile, to have legal cover on the insurance as well. Had a claim last season when my 70-200 was damaged from a strong gust of wind, blown from a low stool onto a concrete path and £800 worth of damage to the lens. Now on village cricket for the summer for the paper.

      Some great examples, there of why insurance, public liability and legal insurance is a must for all photographers really, not just sports photographers. Thanks for watching👍🏻

    I've been shooting for nearly 20 years, and working in IT for over 30. Turn it off and on again fixes almost everything!! Awesome video Mark, love it, jobs a good'un! On a note that you may not want to answer - do you get paid to go and shoot, and then make more if you make the paper, or just fixed rate? Thanks for these, love them.

    • @MarkKerton
      @MarkKerton  ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great video Mark as always. PLI important for that reason. I noticed you always use 2000th f2.8 A-ISO on both bodies? I find it a nightmare when a player has white in the strip and in bright sun. 🫣

    • @MarkKerton
      @MarkKerton  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks John, sorry for the very late reply! Yes, I will always try and keep up as high speed as I can. I like to use auto iso as I work quite a lot in exposure compensation and continuously increase/decrease the compensation to keep the exposure as right as I can. Like you say, though, sometimes High white balance areas can be tricky!
