Hey guys.. apologies, for some reason the photo overlays haven't shown up in the video. I'll get them added in later today so check back for it tomorrow!
Nice to see you're out shooting sports again :D
Yes finally another vlog video of you photographing sports again. Those video's were the ones who got me subscribed to your channel so keep them coming ;-)
Nice video :-)
I really appreciate the extra work that you put towards making a vlog while also shooting for a client. Amazing job!
What a dream set up! I have the R6 but will never have a 400 lol. I would be interested in seeing results from the R6 with a 300 or 400 f2.8 using ef to r adapter at a night game. I am looking at the new RF 16mm f2.8. What would you use that for if you plan on getting it?
2 football matches in 2 days? Luxury! Tomorrow I’m shooting a cricket match, a rugby league game and a football match in one afternoon. In summer, I regularly shot 4 cricket matches in one day. Seriously. That’s the life of a sports photographer on a regional newspaper in 2021. Too many pages to fill and too few photographers so we have to shoot part of a match and then drive to the next one, then the next etc. etc. Sad state of local /regional papers today. Love the channel - keep up the good work.
Can’t top that in terms of workload but have been dragged out of bed at 2am to go do an emergency job by the picture editor of a leading National daily newspaper!
Nice! Not sure why I havnt seen these vlogs but they are good.
Hi Rob,
Thanks for the sideline commentary it was certainly enlightening to someone who doesn't know what's involved in sports photography. I had no idea you have to be on the ball constantly. No pun intended! Great point about crowd cheering who would have thought that gives you your que. Cheers Great Vlog Malcolm Newcastle Australia.
Interesting compact hood on that 70-200. That isn’t standard now is it?
Great video mate, I'm one of two photographers at a league two club. I'm not the best obviously, still learning but stuff like this helps me enormously
Excellent video. We got to see the small details of what you do and how you must prepare and coordinate in different situations.
I wish you could have shown a few of the photos you were explaining about in the video. Thanks again from an amateur photographer.
Why the orange tape(?) on the 70-200 and the monopod? For quick identification of your gear from a distance?
Hi Rob. Thank you for the video. Are you shooting sports on the EOS R6 using the electronic shutter at 20 FPS? Or do you shoot sports with it on the Mechanical Shutter? Cheers, Ross
Yes electronic for loads of it. Check out the video I made about testing rolling shutter. I tend to use mechanical shutter for faster things like basketball now
Hi Rob, did you notice any drop in the fps of the R6 with the 400 ( is this the MKI-heavy you use?) and the 70-200/2.8? Does the R6 slow down when you use a 1.4TC? What the noise like at ISO 6400? I have the 1Dx MKII and 1D MKIV and thinking to replace the MKIV with the R6 ( I will also sell the 6D MKII if I buy the R6)
Great video, Rob. A perfect warm up for tomorrow when I will take pictures of my daughter's handball team as they are playing a cup. Finally we can photograph some sports again! Will be dreaming of that faster fps rate in the R6 though while shooting with my Eos R.
Really useful as always Rob thanks. I’m in the market for second camera to go with my 1DX Mkiii and watched with interest your videos on Canon 7D Mkii and likely to go with that. I believe that it doesn’t have WiFi - is that a factor pls? Keep the vids coming sir - so helpful 👍📸
Hi Rob..great video as always. Ive used the optech ones a few times, do the job and pretty cheap...was the one you put on your 400 also optech? it looked grey or silver in the video.
have a cracking week!
Great vlog Rob, several questions, for the basket ball shoot, did you let the ISO float, did you adjust white balance for indoor or do that in post? Do you find straps and tripod to cumbersome while outdoors shooting? One more question, it would appear that really high iISOs don’t scare you, do you use Topaz to clean up noise? I’m going to be out shooting bears in low light (R5) soon and wonder as to how high I can go on my ISO and still have worthwhile images?
Thank you. Iso and WB I set in advance for indoor sports because I know the light won't change. I don't use any noise reduction really but I have heard that Topaz is fantastic so it could help you definitely
Hi Rob. Another interesting video (as usual) and good to see you getting more sports work again.
Out of interest have you considered getting a second body that is the same as your main body, whether you consider that to be your 1dx, 7d, r6 whatever. I have always used 2 bodies and have striven to have two identical bodies to assist muscle memory in using the relative controls. At my age and with technology advancing so rapidly I find it more and more difficult to instantly recall which controls are which when using different bodies.
I truly appreciate that cost is a big consideration for most of us (certainly for me anyway) which is why we (I) usually end up with a cheaper second body as back up. In fact the last time I could afford two identical pro-bodies was my old EOS3 film cameras.
I no longer make a living with photography so it is less essential for me but I have to say that I would love to be running identical cameras. Now that I have taken the plunge into mirrorless it is one of the reasons why I chose the R6 as I should hopefully be able to sooner afford two of them rather than the R5. Needless to say, cost was not the only consideration when purchasing the R6 as I believe it does everything I want of it and I don't need those massive R5 files.
Any thoughts?
Keep up the good work, your hard work in keeping us entertained is appreciated. All the best.
Great video Rob.
Hello, I am from Mexico and I have little time watching your videos, I have found them very useful. I would like to ask you for a video where you talk about the use of the lens stabilizer. I know they are there to be used in low shutter speed conditions, but I have doubts as to how to use them when shooting on a monopod or tripod. Thanks
Top vlog Rob, always a fascinating insight into the effort and workload of covering games
Such a Great Video. Superb for me as i am actually getting into Professional Sports photogrpahy
Glad you enjoyed it!
Rob, hello, I am using Canon r5 on soccer games. How do you add text to your pictures if you send them wit Canon connection app from your IPhone? I am using Photo Mechanic on the laptop, of course that’s no problem. Doing soccer matches almost 35 years now! I send them now with ftp program on IPhone, but do not know how to add text with the picture!? Do you have a solution?
Greetings, Martin Mooij the Netherlands
I'm afraid I can't help Martin I've never done that - only through Photomechanic
Thank you Rob, still working on it!
Rob, do you favour your R6 over the 1DX mk II?
Nice detail video rob-I’ve always been curious, obviously getting the shots comes first, but do you also get to “enjoy” the match while you are at it? When I shoot events I find the focus it takes enhances some aspects, and deminishes others, but I’ve never shot sports
This might be a stupid question, but what do you do about sending the photos to the content team when it's raining for the whole game? Do you have a cover for your laptop too? @robsambles
Yeah I use a cover. Check my channel I've done a video on it a while back
Rob, what lens hood do you have on the 70-200? TIA!
Rob, really interesting video. I assume you shoot in jpeg to be able to send images so quickly. Would be very interested to see what setting you use for jpegs (picture style etc) and your metering settings to get consistent images.
Love these kind of videos. Great job! I’d love to see a video of your process of sending photos during a game and how you do it. Curious if you look at photos on your camera during a game? If so, are you deleting and/or tagging as you go along so you don’t have so many photos to review?
Hi Rob, where do you download your player list for use in photo mechanic, or do you like me make your own list before the match?
Mostly I make them myself mate. There are websites you can use for it though
great inisght
Thanks Nik
Where did you get your photographer 101 vest?
That's just the media vib given to me on match day by the club. You could make one up on most clothing print sites though
Great video thanks. Who do you sell to?
A whole variety - especially the images distributed via the agency
@@RobSambles thanks for the reply. Maybe a topic for a future video? I enjoy the shooting but often have difficulty in selling.
2 in 2 days EASY! Ive done 6 in a weekend before haha
How much do you charge a soccer team for one game? ❌❌❌❌❌❌❌❌
Pity there were no pictures of the games
