The Ultimate Windows XP Gaming PC - Possibly!

  • Hello again!
It feels like ages since I uploaded a video.. Well, all that time hasn't gone to waste! I have rebuilt my XP machine to be top dog (possibly) for XP gaming, and I lay down the gauntlet to you to find a faster one!
    System Spec:
    CPU: I7-4790k
    MOBO: MSI H81M-P33
    RAM: 4GB Kingston HYPER blu 4GB (2GB x 2) DDR3-1600
GPU: MSI GeForce GTX 980 Ti Gaming 6G
    O/S: Windows XP SP3
Benchmarks galore in this video which is fine and good, but I haven’t included any actual gameplay - just benchmarks.. I have around 60 games now setup and working on this pc, but some of these games take up to 4 disks to install, then they had to be patched, and then - because i’m a glutton for punishment - had to have cracks applied on the games to run without disks. I would happily have included gameplay, but as this video comes in at precisely 16 minutes long, I think actual gameplay will need to wait for another video, as chances are some of you will have got bored and wandered off by the end of it..
I hope you enjoyed the raw power demonstrated by this build? Leave a comment on what you might like to see next - any gameplay you might want to have shown in a new video? Thought on improvements I can make to how I do things? I'll take all comments & suggestions on board!
As mentioned, I need to credit Karl Casey @ White Bat Audio for the tracks I’ve been using which were:
The Dead Zone - • Cyberpunk Electro Indu...
    Ultra Meta - • Cyberpunk Industrial D...
Licence To Kill - • Cyberpunk Industrial D...
Hunted By Machines - • Cyberpunk Industrial D...
There are literally hundreds to listen to on his channel, and from what I can tell, the vast majority of them are free for use! Amazing!

I also have my dream XP PC completed. Running an I7-980X 4GHz with NH-D15 on MSI Eclipse SLi, 12Gb Corsair XMS3 2133MHz, Two Asus DCU2 GTX 570s, RM850W and 512 Crucial MX500. Man is that machine a beast. I know 12 threads and 12Gbs of ram for XP 32bit is absolutely overkill but I love X58 platform.

@@RetroKomodo Well the SLi experience is a mixed bag. Some games run really well like 1.8x scaling, some nearly no scaling and some have graphic artifacts. No water textures in CoD MW and WaW, in 3DMark 03 everything has a yellow filter, FarCry weird textures flickering and so on. Its my first SLi setup and I understand why that technology had to go away. Now using a Titan X Hybrid (drivers installed thanks to your video) instead of those 570s

My XP PC is multi-purpose so it doesn't end up gathering dust in a cupboard. Its an ITX system based on the Asus P8x77i-Deluxe, i7 3770K@4.9GHZ, Corsair H80i, The same MSI 980ti, 16GB Kingston HyperX Beast 2400, 512GB Samsung 850 Pro SSD and 500GB Seagate SSHD, 24x DVD writer and USB Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Surround 5.1 Pro (v1 as that's the only one with XP drivers, the others work but no official drivers for EAXHD as I found with the v3 I originally bought for it), all in a coolermaster Elite 130.
I Triple boot XP and XP64 along with Windows 11 and its smaller size and windows 11 means it doubles as a HTPC as well. I did originally go with an ATX built in my nice blue Xaser III, but its size meant I just kept it in the cupboard most of the time and would just not bother 9/10 given the weight and hassle of setting it up in a space I could use it. So this ITX version that has more everyday use means it always available should I need it. Also using my old Ideazon Merc keyboard as it only seems to work properly under XP, along with my Sidewinder Force Feedback 2. The USB audio makes the complete package with that full EAX support, with its remote adding to its functionality as a HTPC.

This is a Vista/7 pc in my opinion, but of course that's MY opinion and opinions are worth nothing when it comes to nostalgia and personal preference :D My perfect XP machine is standing right next to me; a Pentium 4 3.60 Ghz with 4GB of RAM (XP only sees 3.25GB of it but it's all stable and useable) a 1000W Enermax psu (overkill) and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 (4GB). The reason I'm using a single-core cpu is because some older games don't like running on a multi-core cpu. Yes, I know about setting cpu-affinity in task manager but I own a couple of games that even crash occasionally when running on just one cpu, the only solution being a badass single-core like the P4. But I see what you were aiming for in this video and you nailed it! Awesome video man! Never forget our beloved XP :D

    • @RetroKomodo
      @RetroKomodo  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thanks! Yes - it would be a beast of a Vista/7 machine as well - I agree. My next attempt at an even MORE over the top XP machine will be using an LGA1151 I7-6700K machine I currently use as a media centre, which is completely wasted for it's given task. My perfect XP machine would be based on my old Athlon XP 3200+, and i've been trying to do something with it in 2 motherboards and a mix of hardware, but no matter what I do on the build, the PC always restarts during the 3DMark2001 Advance Pixel Shader test. It isn't the ram, the GPU, the PSU, the storage or the motherboards, as with a 1700+ it completes the test just fine.? It's super confusing. I have yet another motherboard on the way - an ABIT NF7-S V2.0 - and with luck it'll complete the test. But will it run Crysis?

    • @consciousmushroom

Since I can't safely go online with the xp part but need the chipset drivers installed, I put a physical toggle switch in line for the router so I can just disconnect access by turning it off on the line. You may want to look into it, if you don't need much in liu of internet access and/or many Microsoft or Apple specific apps. It's very lean on system resources and quite versatile, though there is a bit of a learning curve. You do still have to manually do some stuff but they've even developed a gui installer now to handle most things.

It doesn't go into a panic if you take the drive out of one machine and put it in another, or swap a cpu or other stuff. To get the ultimate XP PC (much faster) you need to use the x64 version of XP. It was always sad to see people use 64bit processors and then installing the 32bit version of XP, and it's still sad, especially when people are trying to create an "ultimate XP machine" etc. They have no idea what they're missing, or missed. Many people's memories or impressions about XP being slow or bad are largely due to them having only ever used the 32bit version, despite them often having had 64bit processors (so it didn't have to be like that for them), and of course also because they didn't use it with an SSD (usually not even a 10k RPM Raptor/VelociRaptor HDD). I've been using the x64 version since early 2006 and haven't installed a 32bit XP on any computer since then other than some very old 32bit-limited laptops. The x64 version supports 128GB of RAM so even if one is using old DDR2 mobos from the Core2Duo/Quad era one can use the full 8GB they offer. By the way the last update for x64 XP was released in May 2019, five whole years after XP """support""" was "ended". By far the best (the fastest and most secure and most bloat-free) x64 release is the one called "Superior Windows XP x64 Edition (64 bit) revival 6 2009" which is a very cleverly tweaked version of x64 XP, quite unique, faster than even the standard x64 XP and a lot of nonsense removed. Looks a bit odd at first just after it's installed (the arrow and colors) but a few minutes of basic customizing fixes that. When installing any version of XP remember to pre-align the SSD to 4k before installing (easiest way is a via a Win7 install disc). Of course with x64 XP you can run all the Maxwell cards using the same method as for 32bit XP. Only downside to x64 XP is that on-board mobo "HD Audio" doesn't work so you need a soundcard. If you really want to go all the way and make the truly ultimate XP machine then boot x64 XP (Superior Edition of course) from an NVMe SSD from an x99 or similar era mobo, I think x299 boards work as well; any board with a "Legacy boot" mode in the bios works, although keep in mind some of the later boards' on-board ethernet won't work for XP (32bit or x64) so with x99 and later boards you likely need a dedicated ethernet card. And use whatever highest-end Xeon processor available for the board.
