In this video, I take a trip down memory lane installing Windows XP x64 Edition. As a bit of a tutorial, we'll install Windows XP x64 Edition using WinSetupFromUSB utility. We will have a look at a few games and the end of the video.

I downgraded from Vista to XP x64 and it was awesome. It was basically Server 2003 with the XP stuff on top. I remember it being rock solid, but getting drivers for anything was an absolute pain back then
Agreed!! Also, I didn't think about this while making this video, I installed x64 SP2. I actually don't remember if I used x64 before or after SP2 was released.
If your were fortunate enough to have motherboard drivers for XP64, there was always a crappy printer or scanner back then without driver support.

i ran xp x64, it ran smooth. but there wasn't a lot of 64 bit software at the time.. the big thing about it was it could handle waaay more ram, which i needed.
Yeah, I remember the system I bought specifically to run xp x64... It cost me a fortune and it made me so mad when it caused me grief. Lol
It didn't make use of the extra RAM above 4GIG, then I had idea in mind, if won't use it, I made a RAMDisk with it, and redirected my swap file to it.

remember that your experiment is at the end of driver development with no ongoing windows updates. when we were getting xp 64 as it came out, driver development was ongoing and buggy. windows updates were coming in, breaking stuff along the way. being at the end here has its advantages.
Yes! This a brilliant comment! Earlier today I was reading another comment and it sparked this exact same thought in my head! I actually do not remember what year I tried X64 XP back in the day.... I feel it was at the beginning of the life cycle. The ISO I used in this video was Windows XP x64 w/SP2!

I think the only issue most folks had were obtaining drivers when XP x64 came out. It was not that the OS was bad, it was that the OEM/hardware manufacturers were a bit slow with their release of signed drivers.

I have XP X64 Edition installed on my 2010 Classic Mac Pro with as of now an unsupported AMD Radeon RX 580 8 GB, but it's either this GPU or a flashed Radeon HD 7950.
Mind you, this machine has not seen anything beyond Mojave and Win 10 / XP installations riding along from a previous system.
SPECS:
2 X Xeon X5680 at 3.33 GHz
64 GB RAM
AMD Radeon RX 580 with 8 GB Dedicated (have yet to test this GPU with Metal and AI apps).
I had the chance to have two retired Mac pro machines from work a couple of years ago. (Before I started this channel) I wish I had of taken them.
I had a really good experience with xp x64. No driver problems or anything.

It IS actually cheating using newer hardware, because it will have more mature/stable x64 drivers. The bad eXPerience with XP x64 back in the day was mainly driver support/stability. Updates where also hand-me-downs from Server 2003 which also brought some bugs/problems. Using Server 2003 x64 was probably a better experience than using XP x64. I went directly from XP x86 to Windows 7 x86/x64, so I'm just recalling what I read from people experiences.

It’s funny, but I remember XP64 the same way. Back in the 2000s I predominantly ran Win2K on my work PCs and XP on my home and gaming machines. I honestly cannot remember why I had avoided XP64. Heck, I was still running XP all the way to 2015 and inadvertently skipped over Win7 entirely lol.
Last year I came across a bunch of LGA775 motherboards and components I forgot I had, and built out a few XP machines. For shits-n-giggles I decided to give XP64 a try, and damn do I wish I had done it back when it was still relevant. An overclocked Core 2 Quad Q9550, with 8GB of DDR2, and an ATI HD5770 is an absolute beast of an XP machine.
Every game and piece of software I have thrown at it has worked flawlessly. Granted I am not using the system on a daily basis, but I have had zero stability issues running the old CAD/CAM software I used back then as well as hours of gaming. Only thing I have not yet tried, is some of the 16bit software I have kicking around from the 90s that I was still using well into the 2000s.
LGA775 is a great platform for Windows XP! I still have few complete parts sets kicking around. Even though I've only used the build in this video for a week, (I've been going crazy with games I have not played in a long time!) It has been rock solid. It's not what I remember from back in the day.
@@kmprojects2023Oh I know the feeling lol. When I finished building mine, I dug out one of my old CRTs then proceeded to install almost my entire CD catalogue.
I ran XP x64 on my Core I3 first gen with 4G (later 6G) DDR3 RAM and integrated Intel graphics laptop. The computer came with Win7 Home Premium and I installed XP on it just for fun. First time I installed it in IDE mode and then installed SATA AHCI drivers but later I slipstreamed AHCI drivers and made my custom CD with all the drivers needed for that computer.
It ran great, rock solid, without any issues. All the driverswere spot on and overall using the computer was a really good experience. The only difference to Windows 7 was that the battery lasted more on Win7 than XP.
I really miss the Windows XP days... It was such a good OS. (I mean, Windows 7 eventually was awesome too)
yeah i remmember x64 being a nightmare for driver support back in the day felt like a poorly done prototype OS.
I think it was rushed to support the very first x64 Pentium CPU.
@kmprojects2023 lol the itanuim that was the titanic of cpu's which totally failed.
I tried to run it way back when, and it was a trainwreck. Went back to 32, and smooth as silk.
Besides, at the time, so few 64 bit software titles that were out there that it made no real difference.

I never had a problem with Windows XP 64bit, it played many dozens of games and every piece of software and hardware I installed worked.
Most the problems people complain about was during launch, companies were slow at first making drivers - but as time went on companies caught up and it wasn’t much of a problem.

I had xp64 before, mostly for some emulators like Mame that started supporting 64bit and they run indeed faster than their 32bit versions, all perfectly stable.
But other than that, I dont remember xp64 being something more useful than the standart xp, plus later 64bit applications didnt support xp64 but needed Vista or 7.
So that was it, just an experiment from Microsoft, perfectly stable at least.
Yeah, I think you are right. M$ had to start somewhere with x64... and I guess Windows XP made sense to them.
I had no idea the perception of x64 was that bad in places, I ran an early Opteron chip using it for the longest time since I had all the drivers in 64-bit land as well. Smooth as butter in my experience from the day.
Yeah it's wierd how many ppl have such different experiences with x64 Edition. This current built is totally not a daily driver... but it's been rock solid.
I had, and still do have Win XP on one of my computers, win 7 - 10 on the other 2 computers :). I will NEVER use win 11. Look people, before you start calling a dumbass. I PAID 199.00 for that Windows XP Pro when it came out :)

I used XP Pro x64 edition for like 3 years, it was perfectly fine. Compatibility for certain things was hit or miss, but overall it wasn't bad.
You know, I tried to remember how long I actually used XP... I and I struggle to find an answer! I do know that I really liked XP. I am not sure if it is my favorite.. because, you know... Windows 7.... hehehe. But yeah, it was great OS. Thank you very much for watching and commenting!
Use windows XP 64 daily still, on an work machine (no internet access) very stable, but atlast it will be replaced, mosly due hardware it run 24/7 on is getting very old noe.

64 bit xp was the best windows o.s ever.
As much as I want to agree, I've had no end of driver problems and general incompatibilities with it. I think Windows 2000 is the best ever version of windows. No frills, all business.

I'm confused by your comment of the RAM being too big if a capacity to fit? In a 64bit OS RAM capacity is not a limitation like it is with 32bit systems. The maximum addressable memory of a 64 bit OS is theoretically 16 Million Terabytes, so I'm super confused. I have had windows xp 64 edition with over 8gb of ram working. So again, really confused by the statement.
I had to rewatch my own video to see what your statement was. Hehe. I didn't explain it correctly in the video. That ripjaws RAM, even though it is still DDR3, it can be problematic on older boards. I am not sure if it is the chip density on the actual RAM module or what... ("too big") Also, it is not listed in the memory QVL for this board as it is much newer RAM than this board is.

I used win XP x64 on a single core AMD Athlon 64 XP machine and the experience wasn't good, mostly because of many applications not supported on 64 bit OS. As far as I can recall even MSN messenger didn't run. It was however stable.
Yeah, this is the same scenario I remember. Just constant little issues that annoyed the heck out of me.
My core 2 duo e8500 and nvidia gts 450 both had drivers and all was running smooth, i ran it back in 2009, found it better than windows 7 at that time.
It was however a cat and mouse game, if your hardware was older.
I loved my core2 duo system!!! I had an e8400. I also had SLI with two 7 series GPUs. I also miss SLI. LOL

I used Windows XP x64. Considering very unstable RAM patches for XP x32, x64 is really the most normal version for using XP on not-that-old PC.
l miss the XP days... I still have vivid memory of building the computer with the parts I bought specifically to install thIs brand new OS that I couldn't wait to come out. I bought that hardware over time as I could afford it and had it sitting on the shelf waiting for XP release date! That was the only time I ever did that.

It is a plain case for sure but I actually like it! I grabbed three of them when my work was recycling computers during an evergreening project.

A well meant suggestion: Speak a bit faster/with fewer pauses, please. It might sound more natural or like a hangout. But for someone like me, who randomly clicked your video, it doesn't hold my attention very long if you hm and hah your way through the computer parts for the first two minutes, when this video seems to be about WinXP.
I thought it was fine. You need to watch less TikTok and TH-cam Shorts, most people don't need subway surfers gameplay on the side and 30s videos to focus on things.

did you just spread the thermalpaste with your finger ? I mean using the cooler to spread or that thing is 1 thing but the finger
Hehe... I was waiting for someone to comment!! I have a little plastic spatula that I normally use but I couldn't find it. I am not a fan of using the cooler to spread the paste as you normally need to put way too much on for it to work reliably. Also, you really don't need much paste if it's pre-spread.
