- When preparing for a backpacking trip, how you pack your pack can contribute towards your comfort almost as much as the weight of your pack. In this video, I show you how I pack my gear as I prepare for a six day backpacking trip. How things are arranged in your pack is important!

New to backpacking after a lifetime of truck camping and yours is my favorite channel: real advice from a real backpacker and not some gear sponsor shill who you never actually see out on the trail. Truly appreciate what you bring to the table. Also a fellow Midwesterner (SW Michigan) and looking forward to seeing all the trails the Midwest has to offer.
There are actually a lot of ticks in the black hills/paha sapa. They can also potentially carry Rocky Mountain spotted fever. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Good call on the permethrin
Fellow MN native here. Love your channel and it has inspired me to get back out into backpacking again after 10+ years of hiatus (due to a wildly terrible 100+ ticks & black bear trip that scarred me in 2013.) I love your Dorito ritual and plan to adopt it. Hope you don't mind. Imitation, flattery and all that... :)
That’s a lot of ticks, but that’s REALLY a lot of black bears!
Oh man...the Black Hills?! So awesome.
Great content, always love seeing how people pack!
As an aside, AITA or does the cinematic mode on the iPhone look jarring? Silly, even. It's supposed to be a "shallow" depth of field, but really it's just a heavy blur set vaguely around the subject. It's all I ever focus on when someone uses it in a video.
I'll be hitting the Centennial Trail with my son on Aug 25th. We loved the loop trail you shared with us so we had to go back for more!
Pack. Repack. Pack. Repack. Guess I’m not the only one.
I’m starting the Centennial Trail on Sunday. Can’t wait for your videos.
@@tonybabcock655 have fun. Elk creek water was good last week.
@@MidwestBackpacker heard it was running yesterday. May cache water. I do have capacity for 5.5 liters.
@@tonybabcock655 not really that long of water carries from Lake Dalton to Elk Creek and Elk Creek to Alkali. Nice to camp away from water though. Pizza at Whispering Pines Campground!!
@@MidwestBackpacker I figured 6ish +/- hours between each. I carry two 1 liters and my dirty bag is 3L. Worst case is it dries up and things work out that I have to overnight in between. I could also sneak up to Wonderland Cave if I’m desperate. Picking up my resuppply a Whispering Pines. Planning on Pizza!!
Nice setup!
At least you don’t have to worry about bears in the Black Hills. Scariest thing there is the mountain lion which you will be lucky to ever see. Also, lots of rattlesnakes so you have to watch your step
Appreciate it, I use the ridge runner/thunderfly combo as well, but my base is more then you, wonder what is your weight for your hammock and your tarp.
@@cleddy-qx9vx I am not sure. I do have the carbon fiber spreader bars. I made ultra stuff sacks for both which probably weigh a bit more but are waterproof.
For the Centennial Trail, are there any permits you need to get prior to the trip for any of the parks you hike through? or all they all walk up permits?
@@collinrumpca8167 no permits. If you want to camp in a campground (I did not) you may need a reservation. Trip videos start next week.
@@MidwestBackpacker Thanks! the setup for trips like what permits are required and travel and such aren't really discussed on youtube and I always get worried about it when going on some trails. Some places are strict to where you can and can't camp within the parks etc.
Grab Shokz headphones and dump the speaker, otherwise nice setup
There’s no such thing as paying “a little bit extra just to make it a little bit lighter.” 🤣
I bet costs to upgrade average around $40 for each ounce saved.
