In this video I am going to show you my current favorite backpacking gear and how I pack it - in REAL TIME! I'll show you EVERYTHING I bring, including my food, my clothes, and my smaller items like toiletries and luxury items too. This is the most detailed video on packing for backpacking I have EVER done! How I pack can easily work for pretty much all gear and systems, so you can follow along with your backpacking gear even if it's different from mine, or just watch this video to get some sweet gear recs and packing tips you might not have considered before! How to Pack for an Overnight Backpacking Trip!
#backpackinggear #ultralightbackpacking #backpacking #hiking #camping #2024 #adventure #mirandagoesoutside #mirandainthewild
Is your tent sitting on top of your sleeping bag at the bottom? Or is the sleeping bag slightly moved so the tent is on the bottom of the pack?
The tent is touching the bottom, or very close-to! When I separate my tent poles and tent body, I'll also shove the poles down so they are touching the bottom of the pack.
With a heavier tent, I'd recommend separating the poles and body because just packing the tent straight to the bottom on one side could be uncomfortable.
I learned recently that I prefer putting my tent on the outside of my pack at the bottom. I dunno why, but it was much more comfortable for me. Hesitated to do that because folks say don’t put things on the outside. I am always interested seeing how people pack because I was super intimidated and worried I would do it all wrong.
@@thisbeem2714I also prefer mine on the outside!
@@thisbeem2714 Really depends on the tent ,, unless it's one of the ultralite versions , most tents can be about the heaviest pieces of gear you carry (next to your food bag) ... Mine is heavier model and prefer heavy items vertical , in the middle , against your back .. on the outside ,, strap on top ...

Thank you for sharing your gummy worms with me! And by sharing I mean that I stole some and I’m sorry. Kinda. Not really.
😅
🤣
😂
Excellent tips! Thank you! Just wondering why you didn’t pack your first day trail lunch in your insulated Big Sky pouch, and cut down on one bag. I love my Big Sky pouch and use it often as a small cooler bag. If I am taking meat, for instance, to cook on the first night, I will place it, frozen, in a ziploc bag inside the sky pouch and it is perfectly defrosted just in time for dinner.
I have also used it for crackers or something fragile, to keep it padded in my pack, until I need it for insulating a boil bag at dinner time.

“If you don’t pack a rain jacket, it WILL rain” - Peter Rounz
I genuinely can't remember the last time my wife and I went camping or hiking and it DIDN'T rain.
@stich3163 Also known as the Peter Rounz effect, the famous meteorologist explorer who nearly dies after forgetinng his frog togg😅
@@christianmartel5247 oh, I about choked on my food. Well played!
I live in Florida...so we just live by the mantra...It WILL rain (usually around 3pm)...doesn't matter what you pack.
Truer words have never been said
I want the cut of Miranda trying to find all this stuff around the house. Release the Rainer cut!
Give the people what they want!!
Yes we need another storage video next.
IMO, The first thing that should go in any pack with any chance of rain or water crossings should be a pack liner. Even if the pack is waterproof.
Trash composter bag or contractor’s (garbage) bag. Thick and won’t rip.
The region I live in is going through a drought so when there is rain in the forecast I sometimes don’t pack a rain jacket so that I don’t scare the rain away.
That's really sweet
I used to camp with a guy who was a rain magnet. If he came, it rained. It was to the point that he planned a trip to an area out west that was drought stricken and it was record rainfall his entire trip.
The pita rounds reminds me of The IT Crowd when Jen was dating Peter File
I just received my first order of LMNT. I hiked 6 miles and drank more than I normally do ( good thing ) and really liked the watermelon. Today was a non-hiking day. I was a little run down and decided to add 1/2 pack of the grapefruit to my water. It was just the pick-me-up I needed. Miranda, thanks for recommending this product. LMNT, thanks for sponsoring Miranda, my favorite hiker TH-camr.
Consecutive Miranda Goes Outside!! videos without a burp: 0
Yes, real time videos are a nice change up. A few here and there.
"This is mud, not poop"
You can't fool us Miranda
Miranda "Goes" outside
Mud is just Earth's poop.
Nice video! But I would recommend a pack liner and to put your sleep system+ dry clothes + battery Bank and cables in at the bottom and to keep your tent more accessible. Even if in the desert a pack liner helps to keep your sleep gear clean off sand that can seep in through other gear that you keep on the ground, like your bear can or chair.
Sand is my nemesis
first comment glory! *Edit*. Just wanted to secure the covetted spot lol, thanks miranda for your awesome personality! Keep being unapologetically yourself!
Wooooo!!!
Edit: Aw thank you! I will 💚
I'm literally going to be hiking/camping Grand Canyon next week...so, this was a good gut check pre-trip. It's also nice to know that you "try your pack on prior to leaving" I do that and walk around my driveway much to the puzzled looks of my neighbors. Have fun!!! :)
Oooh, I was bringing the little Nivea cream tin as well. I find it that my feet do so much better against any accidental blisters if they are properly moisturized daily. Wish I did it regularly, instead of on trips only, but it is what it is. And when I got a nasty sunburn, it helped as well.
Thanks Miranda, thats a very useful video and some great packing tips 👍
So practical and helpful! Thank you for making this!! :)
Was looking up backpacking trips for this summer and this video couldn’t have come at a better time! Awesome work! 👏
Thank you for sharing this! It is so helpful!
All that is awesome thank you for sharing that
Awesome! Just finished my first backpacking trip of the year!! Excited to put in more!!
Woo I love to hear that!! I hope you get in some amazing trips!
The dice are a fun idea. Thanks!
Man, I love packing videos. It's so helpful to hear the what *and* the why. That's much more helpful for deciding what I want than just saying, "you should carry X."
Yes! And the where in the pack too!
I love watching packing for backpacking videos. I am an experienced backpacker but I'm sure there are still plenty of tips and tricks that I have not thought about. Thanks, Miranda!
What great timing! I’m literally packing for a week long backpacking trip and we leave tomorrow!! Thanks for all the great tips and tricks! 💫
Loved this video. Would love more realtime videos like this around meal prepping, picking your gear, and anything!
Awe Miranda in her Jean shorts! So cute! Loved this video!
We love Miranda so much in this household! Thanks for the video!
Aww thank you household!!! Love you back!
Great video! Thank you so much!
awesome video! i have recently been getting into bikepacking and have been watching your videos for ideas and then applying them to bikepacking. more please =)
watching this as I'm unpacking everything in reverse after my weekend trip. Hope you enjoyed your trip as well
Would love a review on your Yonderwear!!
Jolly good video!
Great video
Love your enthusiasm and sunny disposition. Enjoyable and uplifting to watch!
Aww thank you!!
I love your videos. Constantly laughing and having a good time, makes for really enjoyable content! ❤
Thank you, Miranda!! 🎉😊
Woo you’re welcome Taylor!
You and Rainer make even packing up fun.
The more time that we can spend with you, Miranda (and Rainer), the better!!! You are delightful!!! ❤😁
"More, please!" Thanks for another GREAT video!
I love your videos! I can never decide if I should stuff my sleeping bag or quilt without a stuff sack or not. Next time will try your way.
This was so helpful to listen to your thought process behind why you pack the way you do! I would love to see one about menu planning or route planning in real time too!
Going on a 2-night hike this weekend, so this was great timing! And I love ❤❤❤ that pack - now I want one! (Like I don't already have a couple lol!)
Just used this video as accompaniment to packing for my weekend bushwalking trip down in beautiful Tasmania, Australia... definitely made me faster and more concentrated on my packing than usual!! (and this weekend should be my first snowy hike this year so I'm excited for that!)
Very helpful! I love your videos! Something I really enjoy is the text and cartoony inserts. That makes you stand out. I like the intro and end music, suits you.
Aww thank you so much!!!
Great video, thank you! I fully agree with you on LMNT 🙂
I will always bring a chair! That's my one comfort item lol
I really enjoyed the real time format! Something about the way my brain works makes it easier to digest it this way. Plus you (and Rainer) are so fun to watch (and listen to)!
You guys crack me up! That was a super rad video. Learned a lot!
THANK YOU for the honest comment on the Xero shoes. I have been on the hunt for a hiking shoe with a wide/ natural shape toe box and Xero is more affordable. I love the pair of Lems I got for work so I’ll probably invest in one of their hiker styles.
I loved this style of video! Maybe a similar one for when you get home from a trip?
Oooo great idea!!
I LOVE the Sahara hoodie! And it’s all thanks to you!
YESSSS IT’S THE BEST!!!
OMG I needed this video. I just bought a backpack.
Yessss!! So excited for you!
Love this Miranda. Do more of this style please.
I love these type of videos. 🎒
These real-time videos are awesome, and really help (me at least) bring into sharp perspective how to approach things. Very helpful!
That’s so great to hear!!! Thank you 😊
Perfect timing, thank you! About to go on my first trip of the year this weekend 🥾
I’m missing your camping and hiking videos a bunch. Hope there will be more soon.😊
There will! If you haven’t seen I have a couple backpacking trips recently uploaded - a long one in Utah with fellow TH-camr Eric Hanson and another solo overnight trip here in Washington. I just got back from another great backpacking trip and that video will land on the channel soon!! And even more coming after that! Going to be putting out mostly camping and backpacking content through the summer! Tons of adventures big and small in the works. Thanks for watching and being here! 💚
Cosmic whimpout video 🙌🏼🙌🏼
Another nice video. Personally, I love the REI Sahara sun shirt.
I have a Nemo Hornet 2P tent. For just me. For a few extra ounces, the space is worth it. A 3P is good for 2 people.
Enjoyed the video as usual. Would like to see a 3 day bike packing video with you and Ryan Van Duzer. 😁
Cheers 🌞🚴♀️🖖
I ordered LMNT. I really love it. Chocolate and spicy mango!!!
I have the same design as your phone case, but as a power bank! Also love the colors of your pack, more gear should be colorful
I agree!! I loooove rainbow colorful gear! I'll have to look for that powerbank - I love this phone case!!
I love sun hoodies 🥳
SAAAAME. Total game changer for keeping cool!!
That bottom pocket made for snacks during the day, so you can eat without stopping. That was the original thought among uber-ultralighters, but the pocket also collects small trash items, etc., as a stuff pocket.
As a beginner backpacker this was super helpful!! I overpack (professional teardrop camper w/ EVERYTHING packed and no weight limits haha!!) so seeing everything you bring and how you pack is so great! FYI - link to the pee funnel is broken (adding that to my kit!)
This went well
i need to know what the container/bag you have the gummy worms in, that is so rad!
Gummy candy always and forever on hikes. My gang is partial to frogs, but my fave are the mini gummy bears.
I love the idea of camp games/activities! Maybe you could do a video of a list of ones you like or you have seen others use that are practical to bring on a backpacking trip
My LMNT is on way!
The rain jacket tip applies to umbrellas too. lols
On your next garage grown gear order get some hmg packing pods. I have 3 pods.
1 quilt
2 clothes
3 misc small items and ditty bag
Then my food bag.
My tent and rain gear goes in my big mesh pocket. If I think it will for sure rain I move my rain jacket to my left side pocket where my filter is. Right pocket has my filtered water bottles.
Edit i also put my chair in the big mesh pocket beside the tent.
WooHoo Cosmic Wimpout (and a shout-out to all our late 70's tourneys in South Hadley Massachusetts ). Anyhooo.....I can't be the only one who does this but, within a week of returning from one trip I'm already packed for the next. No matter when that might be. With the exception of food and some clothes, my ten essentials, along with my 'cleaned' tried and true gear are ready. Learned behavior from years ago. When all it took was a phone call with minimal words spoken "you ready to go" and within 20 minutes you were getting picked up. Lost a lot of jobs back then in lieu of adventures. Now living vicariously through Amanda types. Keep on keeping on and live lady, live!
Also, I use the gossamer gear pad to put under my sleeping pad. Gives me a tiny bit more peace of mind that nothing will poke a hole through my sleeping pad.
This is a quality gear Packing video ,,well done ... For a couple of days ,you're set ... ..I'm sure it's a good water resistant pack ,, but I would still put the quilt in a compactor or Nylofume bag liner , even if only for the quilt ,, just as precaution of heavy rain on hike in ....
... As a user of the original Nalgene bottles ,, I think you would like the ,,Humangear CapCap ,, for a wide mouth Nalgene ... I have used them now for a couple of years and think it's the answer to help those that seem to have trouble drinking from a wide mouth bottle .... also with your total weight ,, don't forget to fill both your water bottles ..+2.2 lbs. ..
....... with the low trail runners , regardless of socks , maybe a pair of Dirty Girl type Gaiters would be an option to keep "stuff" out of your shoes .. .... These are MY Tips .....Gosh Darn !! ... Have a good hike ...Stay Safe ...
I am loading up with fun stuff next weekend during the REI anniversary sale. Time to re-pack!
That's so exciting!! Yess the perfect time to repack!
Amanda, where did you get your colorful backpack? I clicked the link and it only had black. Thanks for the great video! I really enjoyed it.
Ha! Ha! It's called, "Murphy's Law" - whatever can go wrong WILL go wrong! 😂🤣😅Just thought I'd add, have you ever considered hiking gators to keep the rocks/dirt out of your hiking shoes? My husband and I both got the Kahtoola gators which even keeps every grain of sand out of your shoes. They work like a charm.
Miranda, I am curious why only some items "boop" when they get packed and others do not. I also "boop" things into place at times and thought I was the only one!
The first time I packed my own pack I was so anxious about doing it right, where to put different items for easy access and then remembering where I put those items. 😅 I’m much better at it now but I still forget which pocket I have stored certain things in.
Hey Miranda, been looking for some gaiters to add to my hiking shoes and wondered what kind you have! I love how colorful they are and have been struggling to find something I like. TIA 💗
Mine are from UltraGam! I love them - highly, highly recommend, and they come in tons of fun colors! Check it: alnk.to/7BeGnAW
Peter Rounds: on the case 😂
Peter Rounds XD
I loved this video! I learned a lot about how to pack properly and products that I may want to check out. What type of camp shoes do you have? They seem to pack down quite small (better than my crocs at least). Thank you!
My camp shoes are the Teva Original Universals! I highly highly recommend them - the perfect little camp shoe. Check them out here! alnk.to/esWgz6d
@@MirandaGoesOutside Thank you for the 411!
I’m loving all of this. Just got to adapt it to the uk where I always have to bag everything in dry bags. Rain is guaranteed! So we always have to pack spare clothes as well. What do you wear to sleep in?
You have such a happy go lucky vibe, great vid. Please be careful using your windscreen with a gas canister, it could explode.
Great video seeing how you have to adapt to what you are carrying each trip. One major question I have not seen answered. Why is a pocketknife in your pack? It is in the name pocketknife. It is a scout essential for camping and you put it away in your pack. You can argue about different types of knives but for so many reasons that needs to be readily available.
A chair!
I just heard Kile sighed 😅
Thank you so much for the humangear pee funnel recommendation! I have tried several different pee funnels as well, but they typically all need practice to be leak free. This one has been leak free from first use. I love how small and light it packs. If you have any influence; ask them to create a glow version for night peeing.😊
Any other lightweight games you recommend? Cosmic Wimpout looks great!
do you have a video of what goes inside the repair kit? I'm curious of how to assemble my own! So far mine is just the spare stuff and repair items that comes with tent and sleeping pad
Agree, I'd love to see more about putting together a repair kit!
I’m actually dropping a DIY video this Sunday that includes how to make this little repair kit, and what I keep in it!!
Please do a tent review! :)
That rule about rain is so real. It also works with the south... if you don't pack warm clothes it'll be cold when you go down south.
miranda seems like a really nice person
I love you colorful pack!! Did you design it ?😊
I didn’t design this one! This is one of LiteAF’s patterns! You could get one too!
The timing of this couldn't be any better. Currently packing for an upcoming trip!
Woo this video was made for you!!
@@MirandaGoesOutside Yay I got a response! Camping/backpacking is a relatively new hobby for me and your videos have taught me so much! Keep up the great work!
I love that your silicone gummy worm pouch it opens so wide. Where can these be purchased from/what brand are they? Thank you. I've never seen any designed like that.
Lmao 🤣🤣🤣 you call that a bag of gummies?!! 😂😂😂
*Stealthily slips my 1kg bag of candy out of sight* 😅
I’m very interested in the reusable bag for the gummy worms! That closure system and how it opens is so functional. Where’d ya find that?
Oooo it’s SO GREAT. It’s from Humangear! here’s the link: alnk.to/h6FBQvu
Looks like the Coghlan's squeeze tube closure that we use for peanut butter & honey on "Peter Rounds" LoLz 😆
Could you please include info on you water filtration system?
Hi Miranda, what brand is the zip bag with the gummy worms? Cool how it holds itself open at the top! Totally agree that gummiea are an essential hiking snack (although heavy!)
It’s from Humangear! This is the smaller size, but I also have the medium size and I love that one for cold soaking meals. Check it out here! alnk.to/esWf7UF
9:36 i would have loved to hear the gummy worm debate! 😆
