    Is your tent sitting on top of your sleeping bag at the bottom? Or is the sleeping bag slightly moved so the tent is on the bottom of the pack?

    • @MirandaGoesOutside
      @MirandaGoesOutside  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +33

      The tent is touching the bottom, or very close-to! When I separate my tent poles and tent body, I'll also shove the poles down so they are touching the bottom of the pack.
      With a heavier tent, I'd recommend separating the poles and body because just packing the tent straight to the bottom on one side could be uncomfortable.

    • @thisbeem2714
      @thisbeem2714 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

      I learned recently that I prefer putting my tent on the outside of my pack at the bottom. I dunno why, but it was much more comfortable for me. Hesitated to do that because folks say don’t put things on the outside. I am always interested seeing how people pack because I was super intimidated and worried I would do it all wrong.

      @@thisbeem2714 Really depends on the tent ,, unless it's one of the ultralite versions , most tents can be about the heaviest pieces of gear you carry (next to your food bag) ... Mine is heavier model and prefer heavy items vertical , in the middle , against your back .. on the outside ,, strap on top ...

      Excellent tips! Thank you! Just wondering why you didn’t pack your first day trail lunch in your insulated Big Sky pouch, and cut down on one bag. I love my Big Sky pouch and use it often as a small cooler bag. If I am taking meat, for instance, to cook on the first night, I will place it, frozen, in a ziploc bag inside the sky pouch and it is perfectly defrosted just in time for dinner.
      I have also used it for crackers or something fragile, to keep it padded in my pack, until I need it for insulating a boil bag at dinner time.

    This video was so nice, coming from someone who's been accumulating gear for *too long* and has yet to actually go backpacking. This demystifies all the things, and reminds me what I still need to obtain for a safe trip! I would love a video about gear maintenance - I'm familiar with washing down, for example, but what about other things? For example, do water filters need to be cleaned/maintained to still function? And how often does gear need maintenance - every trip, every year, etc?

  • @arghyamukherjee9748

    Nice video! But I would recommend a pack liner and to put your sleep system+ dry clothes + battery Bank and cables in at the bottom and to keep your tent more accessible. Even if in the desert a pack liner helps to keep your sleep gear clean off sand that can seep in through other gear that you keep on the ground, like your bear can or chair.

Anyhooo.....I can't be the only one who does this but, within a week of returning from one trip I'm already packed for the next. No matter when that might be. With the exception of food and some clothes, my ten essentials, along with my 'cleaned' tried and true gear are ready. Learned behavior from years ago. When all it took was a phone call with minimal words spoken "you ready to go" and within 20 minutes you were getting picked up. Lost a lot of jobs back then in lieu of adventures. Now living vicariously through Amanda types. Keep on keeping on and live lady, live!

    This is a quality gear Packing video ,,well done ... For a couple of days ,you're set ... ..I'm sure it's a good water resistant pack ,, but I would still put the quilt in a compactor or Nylofume bag liner , even if only for the quilt ,, just as precaution of heavy rain on hike in ....
    ... As a user of the original Nalgene bottles ,, I think you would like the ,,Humangear CapCap ,, for a wide mouth Nalgene ... I have used them now for a couple of years and think it's the answer to help those that seem to have trouble drinking from a wide mouth bottle .... also with your total weight ,, don't forget to fill both your water bottles ..+2.2 lbs. ..
    ....... with the low trail runners , regardless of socks , maybe a pair of Dirty Girl type Gaiters would be an option to keep "stuff" out of your shoes .. .... These are MY Tips .....Gosh Darn !! ... Have a good hike ...Stay Safe ...

    Great video seeing how you have to adapt to what you are carrying each trip. One major question I have not seen answered. Why is a pocketknife in your pack? It is in the name pocketknife. It is a scout essential for camping and you put it away in your pack. You can argue about different types of knives but for so many reasons that needs to be readily available.

    Miranda and Rainer your “killing me”!!!!!! I’m a photographer and I had a really good day pack that I could throw over my shoulder and go anywhere. But I wanted to get out overnight or even longer.
    So after researching a lot I decided on a pack from what I guess is a cottage company. And it’s absolutely fantastic!!!! I guess too fantastic!!!! Because due to getting old and health I haven’t been able to get out as much as I want to. So I have been sitting here packing and re-packing my bag and it’s fun, but it’s not the real thing!!!!
    So now after watching this I’m going to repack my bag and maybe decide that 22 lbs. is always going to be 22 lbs and just packing and repacking isn’t going to help. So I’m going repack it one time using your advice and get on the road. Love y’all and “That’s my show gosh darn it”!!!!!!

    Gummy candy always and forever on hikes. My gang is partial to frogs, but my fave are the mini gummy bears.

    I’m loving all of this. Just got to adapt it to the uk where I always have to bag everything in dry bags. Rain is guaranteed! So we always have to pack spare clothes as well. What do you wear to sleep in?

    Miranda, love your videos. Question for you, if that’s ok, Is your backpack waterproof? I was kind of surprised you didn’t put your quilt inside some sort of dry sack. I’m always thinking my tent might be clean and dry now but by the next day it will not be and I don’t want it to be packed next to my sleeping bag and clothes. Thanks again for the great videos.

      My pack IS waterproof!! When I’m using my other backpack (the REI Flash 55) I’ve started using a pack liner, but with this bag I don’t bother. If my tent is super wet in the morning, I’ll strap it to the outside of my pack instead!

    I’m very interested in the reusable bag for the gummy worms! That closure system and how it opens is so functional. Where’d ya find that?

    What is the lotion that you pack in the little tin? I've gone backpacking in Idaho and it's dry enough that multiple people on the trip had cracked and bleeding fingers. I agree that LMNT is fantastic. It's not too sweet and makes a difference in preventing headaches for me.

      It's a Nivea Creme tin, can find them at most drug stores, Target, etc. 🙂 I'm an Aquaphor junky myself cause it's more of a multi use item- can use it for both lips, hands, feet, even for light nicks and burns, etc but this one is good too!

    Thank you so much for the humangear pee funnel recommendation! I have tried several different pee funnels as well, but they typically all need practice to be leak free. This one has been leak free from first use. I love how small and light it packs. If you have any influence; ask them to create a glow version for night peeing.😊

    Ha! Ha! It's called, "Murphy's Law" - whatever can go wrong WILL go wrong! 😂🤣😅Just thought I'd add, have you ever considered hiking gators to keep the rocks/dirt out of your hiking shoes? My husband and I both got the Kahtoola gators which even keeps every grain of sand out of your shoes. They work like a charm.

    This could be a dumb question but I’ve always worried about the smell of food from trail snacks in my pack and food scent on anything kept in a bear canister. Does the scent of food last or is the reason for the bear canister purely to protect your food source from animals and bugs?

    • @MirandaGoesOutside
      @MirandaGoesOutside  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I meeeean I think in bear country, you should be as cautious as possible. With small critters, it’s often enough for them to just smell food that was in your pack to make them curious - or they’ve become socialized to backpacks = food and will chew through anything to see if they can find a snack. That being said: I have full on spilled olive juice on my pants, accidentally gotten tuna on my backpack, and for sure had a whole slew of smelly things make their way onto my gear. I think it’s important to know that a bear can smell your food in a bear canister. They can smell you, they can smell your chapstick, all of that. The whole point of a bear can is to keep them from *getting* to that food - not necessarily to keep them from smelling it. So yeah, if you get food on your pack or if it leaves a trace of a smell, try to clean it off, but most often the animal is going to go to the most concentrated smell - the bear canister - and if they are deterred from getting to that food, they’ll move on.
      Take allllll of that with a grain of salt, because of course it depends on the campsite and how accustomed animals are to people! But I wouldn’t worry about it too much. The scent isn’t going to last that long, and all your other human smells will mix up with it. It’s not a dumb question at all. If you are ever in doubt, talk to park rangers in your area or wherever you are backpacking, and they can give you insight into the behavior of animals in that specific spot. 💚

    Have you weighed the pack the next day again? Because, I'd suspect it might have lost some weight in form of gummy worms over night... Maybe that's a mysterious case for Peter Rounds to solve?
