  • I return to complete a second thru hike on one of my favorite trails, South Dakota's Centennial Trail. This northbound solo, 5 day, hike starts in Wind Cave National Park at Norbek Dam. On the first day, I walk 28 miles and walk all the way through Custer State Park to legally camp in Black Elk Wilderness. I interact with prairie dogs and bison long the way and stop for dinner at Legion Lake Lodge. On Day 2, I visit Mount Rushmore and make my way up the trail on a hot day and camp just past Samelius Peak and the highest point on the trail.

Dude I was out there too! On my last day hiking on Bear Butte Miyagi asked if I saw you anywhere👀…um nope but I would have gladly delivered you trail magic! I also hiked many of the same miles you did in addition to the Black Elk Peak loop…I encountered 3 separate bull bison on 3 different trails in Wind Cave that would not get off the trail😂

I like the wind cave section the most, had some great bison encounters. I really hated the section down from the peak, really seems like endless wandering until you get to Sheridan. Also not a fan of the rock climb out of fish Creek. But it really is a great short through hike.

Please tell me they offered to validate your parking when you purchased the charge cable while carrying a fully loaded pack-most hilarious moment of my hike there last year. I just gave the poor girl the longest blank stare, then just politely responded with a “no thanks, I walked” and got a blank stare in return.😂

Sounds like you were up there the same time as we were - interested to see what your weather does. We had a day of 98, followed by a day of 48 w/rain and fog. We were playing tourist so some of our hiking got altered. We weren't very well prepared for 48. & we only saw George @ Rushmore (fog).

Bison tip: Get out of their sight and they will move along. You are something out of the norm so they will stop and watch you. Works for predators, not so well with two legged predators with firearms.

How was the initial 28 mile push to Iron Creek compared to your first time stopping at French Creek? I thru hiked last year in 6 days, want to come back and do it 5 days next year prepping for the Tahoe Rim Trail.

22:30 When there is a tourist helicopter, you should climb up onto the highest point you can find and bring some rocks and sticks. Then shake your fists into the air at the helicopter and hurl your rocks and sticks at it while yelling gibberish. This is good for tourism. Bonus points for rolling in the mud first.
