Trivia time! Bernard Cribbins, the actor who played Wilfred Mott served in the military from 1946-1949, and the line about him never having killed a man was added on his insistence. He served in the military, and didn't kill anyone, and was very proud of that fact. He felt Wilf should share that detail
I think we can officially call Wilf a companion. He has travelled in the TARDIS, even though it wasn’t far. Even if that isn’t enough, the love we all have for him should be. RIP, Bernard.
I love that Wilf, who totally deserves it, is stepping into the role of Companion. I feel like at this point in the Doctor’s story, only he could be the companion that Ten needs. No one else would have had quite the same understanding and empathy for him in the cafe scene. And of course it broke my heart seeing Wilf begging the Doctor to bring Donna back.
A fun joke/reference you may have missed at the start when the Doctor is saying he "got married, that was a mistake. Good Queen Bess. And let me tell you, her nickname is no longer... _ahem_ anyway." Bess is short for Elizabeth, and Queen Elizabeth I was known as the Virgin Queen. She didn't seem very happy to see him in _The Shakespeare Code._
For those of us Old Whovians who had been lucky enough to avoid spoilers, and dumb enough not to figure out what was going on, the sight of those gorgeous/absurd Time Lord collars in the final scene were a jump-off-the-sofa moment - _the_ signifying feature of Time Lord costume since 1976.
I was outside the cafe while David Tennant and the late Bernard Cribbins were filming. I wasn't expecting to spend a spring bank holiday in Swansea watching a small road turn into London at Christmas time, but definitely worth it. My little sister and I ended up securing some baubles from the Xmas tree prop
All the interactions between The Doctor and Wilf in this story are so beautiful and emotional......Wilf steals the show.... Is it tomorrow yet? But then again....I don't want the story to end......
That talk Wilf and the Doctor have, just incredible acting from both of them. Easily one of the best little bits of the entire season IMO. Can't wait for tomorrow now, should be an um, interesting reaction I think to the 2nd part. Yes, interesting.
The reveal of Rassilon and the Time Lords is one of the greatest cliffhangers I’ve ever experienced live. They spent four series building on the foundation that the Doctor was definitively the _Last_ of the Time Lords, and even the Master surviving was an act of providence. The Daleks always make it out but they’ve been very specific about the fact that there are no more Time Lords and Gallifrey itself is gone. So for the final cliffhanger of RTD1 to not just be another Time Lord but to tease, at long last, a return to Gallifrey and the Time Lords? I don’t think anything else could have compared. It is the perfect amount of suspense and hype associated with their return, combined with the dread of realising that they are the thing that is returning to bring about the End of Time.
The beginning of the end ❤. Casting perfection - David Tennant, John Simm, Bernard Cribbins, and Timothy Dalton - amazing performances from these 4 (and the rest of the cast too) Edit: oh, and Brian Cox as the voice of the Ood Elder too
I love David Tennant's absolute delight in that special - he's so happy 😊 I also love 'The Ballad of Russell & Julie' that he and Catherine Tate perform in another 'special' 😂
I always thought the multi Master thing was so silly - but worth it for the “master race” joke, because it’s so bad it’s funny xD. Also makes sense with the plot.
Even worse - The Master has created a race of blonde Anglo *SAXONS.* He’s not just making a stupid pun, he’s making a stupid *history* pun which only the Doctor is going to understand.
So back in series 3 Russel wrote in the ring coming out of the fire when burning the masters body with the original intention of having a opening to bring back the master if he had left the series before doing so. He picked up this plot point for these last two episodes. Also this was the gate the trickster referenced in the wedding of sarah jane which in terms of filming i think was filmed after these last two episodes
4:19: "I didn't exactly come straight here, had a bit of fun, you know? Traveled about, did this and that." The Trickster to the Doctor in the Wedding of Sarah Jane: "The gate is waiting for you..." 9:18 "Prepare the gate!" Even when the Tenth Doctor's running from his fate, he still gets ominous messages related to it. Talk about a tough break.
While I didn’t quite like how they handled The Master in this one, especially the “master race” joke near the end, there are some great moments in this episode. The scene between The Doctor and Wilf at the diner was incredible. Two fantastic actors at their best. And the revelation of the Time Lords at the end… 😮 unreal.
In an interview at the time, John Simm said that one of the main reasons he came back was to work with David Tennant again. 😊 There was also a picture taken, of an for the entire cast and crea, in which everyone's face was replaced with John Simm's. 😂😂😂
Five great actors in one episode: Tennant, Cribbins, Simm, Harewood and Dalton. Space for everyone, no one's left out, perfect ensemble acting. Oh, it's all a build-up to the 'Master Race' joke but I'll forgive it. That RTD knew how to write. 10/10 for recognising the best Bond, by the way. Normally met with a vacant stare.

I love the idea that while the doctor spends his time going around helping people in his adventures. The Master spent his time finding ways to gain power for himself so he has all these contingencies.
Technically Wilf was already a companion - in 1966 Bernard Cribbins played Tom Campbell in Daleks' Invasion: Earth 2150 AD starring Peter Cushing (Grand Moff Tarkin/Dr. Victor Frankenstein) as Dr Who - a non-canon to the series movie adaptation of The Dalek Invasion of Earth (the second serial of the second season of Doctor Who - with William Hartness as the Doctor - 1964). In this movie the Doctor is not an alien time lord - he's just a scientist who invented a time machine (I don't remember if there's any explanation of why the time machine is in a blue police box in this sequel - or the first movie Dr. Who and the Daleks - based on The Daleks from season one of Doctor Who in 1964).
You can not remember the nightmare, but still remember the feeling. It's depressing. And if it repeats night and night again - you are just constantly miserable, and you're just partly aware, why. Also, I've conducted a research =)) the most frequently played Christmas song on New Who is Merry Xmas Everybody by Slade.
There is tradition started back in Classic Who where the Doctor gets visions (clips) of all the companions (and sometimes opponents) from his run on the series before he regenerates (You didn't see it last regeneration because it was only Rose. The Tom Baker one took about 20 minutes - because of the extent of his run). Waiting to see what you think of the way they handled it this time.
There IS a set of stories where Ten is the Time Lord Victorious, ostensibly set between his appearance in The Sarah Jane Adventures and The End of Time Part 1. The majority of said story arc is told via two really short novels called The Knight, The Fool and The Dead and All Flesh Is Grass. Other aspects of the setup for said story are done through audio dramas but you could just read the two books. They're short and fun if you have the time. There's also a few surprise guest stars.
I don't recall if we knew the Time Lords were returning going into this episode or not... But having Timothy Dalton as [the as yet unnamed Time Lord]?! Wow!
I always thought this was the weakest of the 4 specials (mainly because it's mostly set-up for the second part) but there are some *fantastic* moments. The scene with Wilf in the cafe still gets me every time I see it, and what a cliffhanger! So excited to see how you react to the second part. I'm sure it'll break you more than Journeys End!
DINNERTIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIMME! That line read is great, always makes me chuckle. Timothy Dalton was an inspired choice to play Lord President Rassilon of the Time Lords! He has such perfect gravitas for the role! Rassilon is mentioned a bunch in classic who, but I can't remember if he ever actually appeared in it. Not in any of the classic who episodes I've seen, at least! Timothy Dalton as a Time Lord certainly explains how James Bond has so many faces and is still kicking after all these years!
Timothy Dalton is a time lord here aka James bond aka James bond is a time lord, their alot of James bonds but all have different faces aka regeneration. And the women at the end is the doctor mother, Russel T Davis acknowledged it's his mother.
They don't actually say who she is, because RTD wanted people to make up their own minds, but in his book about writing this series, he did say what he meant her to be, and that he told everybody working on the show, including the actors, who she was supposed to be. I won't say until next episode, but it is fascinating to hear what people think.
People have a lot of fondness for this two-parter, on account of it being David Tennant's final story. And to be clear , I love it too. Wilfred's "don't say that like it's shameful!" is one of the stand out lines in all of Doctor Who for me. But... this is a VERY silly TV story. I don't have room here or time to list all the ways in which it is ridiculous, but I think it is perfectly encapsulated by the fact that the whole narrative bends over backwards to tell that "Master race" joke. One of the things that they don't mention about the master apart from later on in the next few series is the fact that he can hypnotize people to an extent that is not been known before. They presume that the viewers know, even though this is new who
The Master shows you how one ultra super genius alien can be trouble. Now just imagine an entire planet with millions of them. Until The Time War, they were non-interventionists. The Doctor locked them away to save the universe from destruction!

Wow wow wow we’re here already. The end of a great era. We even had Brian Cox voicing one of the oods! Brilliant! Except some WILD moments in part 2. Part 1 has problems and is messy, part 2 definitely isn’t imo. Its bounds stronger. The clock is striking eleven… exciting things ahead.
One of the things that they don't mention about the master apart from later on in the next few series is the fact that he can hypnotize people to an extent that is not been known before.
They presume that the viewers know, even though this is new who
And yahoo for calling out the music. Tomorrow is a killler.
The sad thing is, the guy who plays Wilf is dead now 😞
I still like to say "Shimmer" occasionally. Just for fun.
The Master shows you how one ultra super genius alien can be trouble. Now just imagine an entire planet with millions of them. Until The Time War, they were non-interventionists. The Doctor locked them away to save the universe from destruction!
It’s time…
…for time to end.
Well Chris going into this 8 wanna say it was a very good time watching your reactions for the last few months
I'm a bit sad because Tennant is the best Doctor and letting go is gonna be... Pain
can you make sure to keep us updated on your intros when it comes to how far you have actually watched because many patreon people doing the same thing as you are alert us so that we know: ok he is already 2 episodes ahead of the youtube schedule so that way most can keep in mind to limit what information they can give as i can see youve watched 5x8 already
It’s kind of hard to be specific because sometimes I release double episodes. I’m always 8 weeks ahead, so right now I just finished 5x9 :)
Shim-ahhhhh!
Good luck with the tears tomorrow.
My main problem with this episode is the Master's CGI skull effect. It just looks too cartoony and completely takes me out of the moment.
Tomorrow?!
Tomorrow!!
Tomorrow is another day!
Shut up, Scarlett.
