It was this (following last episodes' iconic "Hello, I'm the Doctor" scene) that cemented Matt Smith as The Doctor for me, back when this first aired. The visceral reaction to what he discovers in this episode so perfectly encapsulated the disappointment and betrayal of the Doctors faith in humanity, absolutely one of my favourite 11th doctor moments

"And then... I will choose the new name, because I won't be the Doctor anymore" - hits deep. At first time watching this before this phrase you wouldn't even think of the consequences for him alone for willingly killing the Star Whale, the last of its kind. And then it hits you. Love this scene.

Everyone thinks Matt Smith is lighthearted compared to Tennant and Capaldi, but this Doctor has just once again sent his entire planet and species into the void of the Time War, while losing his best friend. The sad clown carries on laughing.

With what we learn later about choosing his name, it makes that line hit so much deeper now. That's about as ambiguous as I can make it to avoid spoilers as best I can. Hopefully those who know.... know

One of the best episodes for a companion realizing WHO The Doctor is in a realistic, dense manner. Most others knew conceptually, but had to have information learned over time about him being the last of his kind, being old, being kind, etc, but Amy had literally only imagined what he must be like before he came back when she was an adult. Everyone else took time to acclimate. Only Amy truly grasped so much in two episodes. And only one other got it faster, when Donna met him in 1 special, and was the one to tell him that he could stop. The two best companions of NuWho.

Agree on all points, its rare to see a NuWho companion who has the courage to stand up against the Doctor in what can be considered one of his darker moments, the only other NuWho companion I can think of is Donna who tells 10 to stop in her first episode. "Or if the hypothesis were offered us of a world in which Messrs. Fourier's and Bellamy's and Morris's utopias should all be outdone, and millions kept permanently happy on the one simple condition that a certain lost soul on the far-off edge of things should lead a life of lonely torture, what except a sceptical and independent sort of emotion can it be which would make us immediately feel, even though an impulse arose within us to clutch at the happiness so offered, how hideous a thing would be its enjoyment when deliberately accepted as the fruit of such a bargain?" - William James
This quote inspired an Ursula le Guin story, 'The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas', which portrays this dilemma eloquently. And it (and/or a similar passage in Dovstoevsky's Brothers Karamazov) clearly inspired this story.

It riffs on the classic sci-fi short story "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas" by Ursula K. LeGuin. You should read it.

Building a world for a 45 minute episode of a TV show is not an easy task. You start out with a concept, and you build it up with mythology and then find ways to explore that environment with your characters to allow exposition and excitement and curiosity... and hopefully, at the end of the 45 minutes you've entertained your audience and given them something coherent to enjoy.
In the classic WHO era there was a story called Paradise Towers. If you spend about 5 minutes thinking about how the Towers came to be in the situation they are in when the Doctor and co arrives, it really just falls over. There's so many plot holes. For me, this story is that. Sure, it's enjoyable while you're watching it, and I finally had "my Doctor" moment for 11 when he was checking out the glasses of water. That was top notch Doctor right there. But for me the concept falls over after 5 minutes of consideration.
Not saying it's not a good story. It entertains, it's got great characters, Liz 10 is da bomb! But aside from the fact this was one of my oldest kid's favourite episodes, I would not have given it much rewatching. (I've watched Paradise Towers much more, because of course, Red Kangs are best.)

This is the beginning of my love for new Who. I first watched Doctor Who with the 4th Doctor. When new Who came along, I watched, but didn't love it. I watched a little more with David Tennant. But Mat Smith got me back to loving the Doctor.

I do really like this episode, but i feel like it shouldn't be the 2nd episode. It seems too soon for Amy to understand the Dr that accurately. I mean, yes, all the clues are technically there in this episode, but to me it doesn't feel like an authentic conclusion for Amy to reach. Just sort of a plot point that needs to be reached. Don't get me wrong, it's not that i think Amy is wrong -- it totally works on me, and get choked up every time -- it just seems premature for her to be so right about him.

The whole difference between Rose and Amy, summed up nicely.
    Rose: My mom!
    Amy: Me!
