Missed the chance to talk about how Mike leach developed Minshew at Washington state. In recruiting him to Washington state coach leach called him and the first thing he said was “how would you like to lead the whole NCAA in passing yards”……he did.
2018 Eli Manning: 4299 yards, 21 TDs, 11 INTs, 92.4 passer rating. Daniel Jones matched this only in 2022 and had the Giants not drafted him, they could and probably would have drafted a QB in the 2020 draft with a far better QB class.
As a Broncos fan, I would argue that Drew Lock wasn't really given a chance. He had a head coach, Vic Fangio, who didn't care about the offensive side of the ball. Fangio wasn't interested in developing a QB, he wanted an old veteran. During the one season where Lock was the starter, Fangio admitted that they only used about half of the playbook, because he and the OC didn't have confidence in Lock, nor did they want to work with him. That said, part of the problem with incoming QB classes is due to QBs like Mahomes. Now if a rookie QB isn't immediately an all star, they are deem worthless.
Should have rode it out with Lock one more year and drafted a QB if it didn’t work out instead of mortgaging the future in that awful Russell Wilson deal.
I always liked Drew Lock and felt the same way about him. Always felt like the dude had potential but he could just never get to that starter level for whatever reason. I watched him throw a pick in a preseason game fighting for the Giants backup job the other day though, so idk if he’s gonna make his way back lol. He was definitely one of those guys who was failed by coaching, rather than just never being able to live up to his potential at the pro level.
Gardner Minshew is just the new Ryan Fitzpatrick lol. He is really that in between QB. A well above average backup QB but just slightly below average starting QB.
When you reach for ANY player INCLUDING QBs you’re going to see some spectacular disasters. It’s not just that teams reach for QBs, but those teams often don’t know how to develop QBs. Has anyone wondered why QBs drafted #1 overall don’t generally have overly successful careers, especially with the team that drafted them? Strong arm, decent stats at the combine and his height and weight look good. But you need a lot more than that at the NFL. The big issue that I think you see is the INTs he throws and won’t make him good at that level.
