The best thing about Sweet was that they never took themselves remotely seriously, which was quite a rarity in early 70s rock ! One of them (Andy Scott probably) said " Bowie was an alien rock star, Bolan was a a magic pixie...we just looked like construction workers in drag " which pretty much sums it up. Good time, party band. No frills, no pretensions, platform boots. Can't knock it.
I'll wait patiently for Teenage Rampage...

Their later material was much heavier than their earlier stuff. Several people have already mentioned "Love is Like Oxygen", "Hellraiser", "Fox on the Run", and "Teenage Rampage", but a couple heavy tunes to add to the list include "No You Don't", "Action", and "Cockroach". I just watched your reaction to Wig Wam Bam and you asked for info about Sweet. You got it. The group is well named because these were probably the sweetest four guys you could ever meet. They deserved better than they got. Of the four members only Andy Scott, the guitarist, is still alive. The first to go was Brian Connolly. He was jumped in the street by three guys because he had been flirting with one of their girlfriends. The last blow was a kick to the throat. The thug said "that ought to do it". They were about to tour America with the Who but had to cancel. It was six months before some of Brian's voice came back. He never really recovered. With his body torn up by alcohol he began having heart attacks. I've heard as many as nine a day or as many as 13 a day. Then the shakes started. I heard a promotor talking about putting a Sweet reunion together. He met the plane and saw all but Brian coming off the planes. They told him Brian was coming. The last person off the plane was Brian. He was only a shadow of himself, a bent-over little old man with the shakes walking with a cane. And his voice was gone. There was no reunion. Brian spent his last years living a what they call a council flat (small apartment paid for by the gov't) and died in 1997 aged 51. Mick Tucker was next. He had everything - worldwide success with the band, and he married his high school sweetheart. The she was killed in a car crash and he was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia. Even a bone marrow transplant from his brother didn't help. Mick died in 2002 at 54. After the band split up Steve Priest has moved to L.A. He died in 2020 at 72.

The only thing that bothered me about tv in the 70’s when I was a kid in Sweden was Jimmy Savile. He was just so bizarre looking and acting, he gave me the creeps. My parents couldn’t stand him either. It turned out I was right: he was a creepy bad guy.

This was not Top of the Pops, but Disco - a German equivalent (from 1971 to 1982-during my teenage years). Luckily, Jimmy Savile wasn’t present. Disco was hosted by Ilja Richter, the gentleman who opened and closed the performance. Lots of British bands were guests at Disco. Germany didn’t experience power outages during that time, but we had Car-free Sundays because of the oil crisis. You could play football on the Autobah.😁

Sweet were a good rock band , they had a string of commercially pop based singles which were written for them by the song writing team of Chinn and Chapman and not by the band themselves which made them one of the biggest selling singles acts globally in the 70s.
Their albums however didn't sell as well as their singles.
This track is one of their biggest sellers, they eventually managed to start getting their own songs taken seriously, but by that time their star had faded.
Fox on the run I believe was their biggest success as songwriters in their own right

This was written by Chin and Chapman. Chapman went on to produce Blondie. They also wrote stuff for Suzie Quatro and loads of other Glam Rock bands in the early 70's in Britain. But after getting stick for not writing their on songs they had a very big hit with one they wrote in 1977 or 8 called Love is like oxygen which is very good and proved they could write their own songs.

Ballroom Blitz and Fox on the Run definitely worth a listen too. The Sweet - the archetypal British Glam Rock band of the early 1970s🇬🇧😎👍🏻

I always play this song it's so much fun. It always made me happy when they mention Running bear and Little White Dove because that's from a song called "Running Bear" by Johnny Preston. My mom would play that song all the time when we would clean our house and we always had a good time.

My Brother was a big Sweet fan , and at School ( in Essex ) he and his mates did a tribute band , my brother was on the drums. I mention it to him now and again and we both roll our eyes. The 70s was a happy time for us, so it has nice memories . Cheers

Guys great reaction. One of my faves from the UK 1970s. There were a few huge bands in that era including Sweet - others were T.Rex (who I think you've reacted to twice, 'Get It On (Bang A Gong)' and 'Hot Love' but there's lots more hits); and Slade, who were the biggest selling band of the 1970s in the UK. They had 6 consecutive no.1s, a feat that wasn't repeated until the late 1990s, by Take That - and you had to sell a lot more to get a no.1 in the '70s!

Grew up as a elementary school kid in the 70's. This is my childhood! Absolutely love The Sweet! All kids parties played these. Sang these songs until I was hoarse as a kid. Still love them. Please, please do "Chirpy, Chirpy, Cheep, Cheep" by "Middle of the Road" - it'll make you smile. Your children would love it too.

I only know a handful of Sweets songs but "Fox on the Run" by them is a great song, other than "Ballroom Blitz" I think it was their biggest hit.

One more comment! In the earlier part of their career, Sweet dressed glam, but their hits were written for them by the successful songwriting team Chinn & Chapman. These were known as Sweet's 'bubblegum' hits: 'Wig Wam Bam', 'Little Willy', 'Blockbuster', 'Poppa Joe', 'Funny Funny', 'Co-Co', 'Hell Raiser', 'Teenage Rampage', 'The Sixteens'.
But Sweet were a hard rock band influenced by the likes of Deep Purple. They wanted to be known for their heavier sound rather than the bubblegum. They wrote their own songs which were heavier, and appeared on many of the B-sides of their Chinn-Chapman A-side hits. After a while they left the CC team to write all their own songs which are great hard rockers, some also hits. Try any of: 'Action', No You Don't', 'Done Me Wrong All Right', 'Set Me Free', 'Cockroach', 'Love Is Like Oxygen'. You already did (I think) 'Fox On The Run' (the album version doesn't have the keyboards of the hit version, it's all guitar, so is a bit heavier)
Like most Sweet fans I love both styles/periods, it's all great, bubblegum for the lighter fun and the heavier stuff is more serious while still being catchy. Having said that, 'Blockbuster' and 'Hell Raiser' rock out pretty well!

People who are not songwriters don't understand how hard it is to right catchy songs like this. Sweet made it sound effortless (it isn't). They were amazing.

The UK went through a Glam Rock period, at least as far as the charts were concerned, in the first half of the 70s. Sweet were part of that, as were Slade (Mama Weer All Crazy Now), Marc Bolan (Twentieth Century Boy), Wizzard (See My Baby Jive) and several others, including that one in jail just down the road from here.
It was easy to dismiss The Sweet as an insignificant pop group but scratch beneath the surface and you have a band that could really play. Some of their album stuff was fairly heavy. I'm not sure if you've done Fox on the Run, but that was one of their own rather than coming from Chinn and Chapman like a lot of their hits. Most of the Glam Rock bands were actually fairly decent bands in their own right.
You have to remember that anything you see on Top of the Pops from that period - like this - was mimed, so bands could pretty well do what they wanted, often taking the Mick out of the whole miming process. Having the drummer out front was quite common on that show.

IT WAS AWESOME for a 12 / 13 year old!!! The Joker by Steve Miller played, a lot....Hot Chocolate's: You Sexy Thing...and, Amii Stewart's: Knock On Wood....ALL GREAT SKATE TUNES!!! This was a FUN ONE!! Glad ya'll thought so, too!!! HUGS!! ❤❤❤❤❤

Sweet were borderline bubblegum sometimes, but they always rocked, which was their saving grace. I sometimes wonder what Native Americans though of this song.

  • @HalcyonHammer
    @HalcyonHammer ปีที่แล้ว +2

    1) This bubblegum sound is what got Sweet started (with the poppy songwriting team of Chinn/Chapman), but they wanted to escape that and play heavier stuff (like on Desolation Boulevard and Give Us A Wink albums).
    2) Try "Lies in you eyes" (official video from Supersonic TV show in 1976 is best) from Give Us A Wink album. Awesome rocking song... it's harder. Set Me Free and Action are good too.
    3) How have you not done SLADE yet?? Glam kings, and great fun rockers! Unfortunately, there are a lot of crappy 70s TV lip sync videos out there for them, so please choose wisely - want you to have a good first experience! My fav is "Mama Weer All Crazee Now" on Supersonic in 1977... Pure live, pure loud power. Balloons, streamers, and real fun from Slade.
