This song was actually used as an example of heavy use of it, especially in the beginning of it. I am old and I remember it. I may have been wrong about which pitch corrector they were using, but they were definitely using one. And one turned way way up. Like Cher famously did in Believe.

Fun fact. The shoot for this video took way longer than expected, and everybody was getting bored, so Siobhan went for a wander, found the bar and got absolutely smashed on vodka. When she showed up to do her part she could barely stand up, but they went with it and the result was brilliantly and hilariously over the top.
Also, the name Shakepears Sister is the title of a song by The Smiths.

More importantly, the hypothetically tragic life of Shakespeare's fictional sister is given in a speech by Virginia Woolf in the 1920s to the young women of Girton College, Cambridge, and subsequently published as the essay 'A Room of One's Own'. It imagines a sister of the playwright attempting to work in theatre in a world where women were denied an education, and any career beyond bearing children and keeping house.
Woolf: 'Any woman born with a great gift in the sixteenth century would certainly have gone crazed, shot herself, or ended her days in some lonely cottage outside the village, half witch, half wizard, feared and mocked at. For it needs little skill in psychology to be sure that a highly gifted girl who had tried to use her gift for poetry would have been so thwarted and hindered by other people, so tortured and pulled asunder by her own contrary instincts, that she must have lost her health and sanity to a certainty. No girl could have walked to London and stood at a stage door and forced her way into the presence of actor-managers without doing herself a violence...'

The angel of death Is Siobhan Fahey (* 1958) formerly of Bananarama who had become tired of the pure pop direction Bananarama was going. So she left in spring 1988 to form Shakespears Sister. Her biggest hits were "Stay" (1992) from their second album "Hormonally Yours" and "You're History" from their first album "Sacred Heart" which includes my favourite "Run Silent". The girl with the high voice is Marcella Detroit (* 1950). She was fired by Siobhan in 1993 maybe because of jealousy. But they reunited in 2019 after 26 years of silence and released the WONDERFUL single "All The Queen's Horses". All of the songs I mentioned plus "I Don't Care" (1992) are definitely worth checking out!

Virginia Woolf wrote an essay entitled “A Room of One’s Own” in which she contemplates what it would be like ‘if Shakespeare had a sister’ as talented as he. Would her works have been recognized in a world run by men? Would she even be allowed a room in which to write?

What happened with Shakespeares Sister was sad. It was Siobhan's solo project originally - she was the lead and Marcie was brought in as a backing singer.
It was their management who requested that Marcie be lifted into co-lead and Siobhan felt strongarmed into it. Understandably, there was an element of resentment, even though they were dynamite together.
Siobhan went through a very rough patch with her marriage and her mental health and it led to her sacking Marcie very publicly at an awards show, having not told her before hand.
They didn't speak another word for years, right up until 2019 when they started mending fences.
They got back together properly a year later and are now releasing music and touring together again.
Im glad they've buried the past and hope they do another album because their 90s work was amazing.

Shakespeare's Sister were SO underrated back in their day, and they were AMAZING! The lady with the angelic voice is Marcella Detroit, and the Angel of Death is Siobhan Fahey (pronounced 'Shivorn Faye,') formerly of another well-known eighties girl group Bananarama. Fun fact: while making this video, Siobhan had to do many hours of waiting around before she got to shoot her bit, so she passed the time drinking... a lot. If you were thinking she looked drunk while she was performing in this, that's because... she was!

Stay was the group’s second hit . Their first hit You’re History , Siobhan takes the lead in the vocals and sheds her blonde bob hair cut poppy Bananarama image and shows off her deeper seductive voice while Marcella Detroit brings her high voice and gives the song a bit of an eccentric feel .
It’s not surprising you guys didn’t recognise Siobhan even though you did Bananarama’s I Heard A Rumour recently . She changed her image and singing style dramatically several years after leaving Bananarama

The power of Marcella's voice shook the room! Thank you for playing Shakespear's Sister. I was fortunate to have Marcy come off the stage and pull me to her and sing the WHOLE song 'Stay' to me whilst looking me in the eyes. It was a moment. The song was co-written with Siobhan's former husband, Dave Stewart from The Eurythmics, Siobhan was in Bananarama, and Marcy was Eric Clapton's backing singer. The video was made by Sophie Muller who did Annie Lennox's videos, and it won a Brit award. ALSO - Siobhan was SO DRUNK when she descended down those stairs as the Angel of Death, she nearl;y fell down them. She had been waiting all day to film her bit, and was nervous, so she polished off nearly a whole bottle of Vodka. This song was ay number one in the UK charts for EIGHT WEEKS, and came out when my great grandfather passed away, and became my grandmother's favourite song. This song came from their second album, released in 1992, called 'Hormonally Yours' because it was written and recorded when they were both pregnant. Marcella Detroit (American) took part in a British TV show called Pop Star to Opera Star, and she sang a notoriously difficult Mozart aria called The Queen of the Night which involves some unbelievably high notes - an F above a high C - and she was INCREDIBLE! It was quite a while ago. I think she, unfairly, came 2nd to an English woman from Bucks Fizz (if I remember rightly). I can only imagine it was because the public wanted a British person to win. Shame on them if true - speaking as an English woman myself. Marcella, hands down, deserved to Win 🏆

The story goes that Siobhan Fahey grew really tired of waiting on them to film Marcella Detroit's parts for the video. So she got a bit drunk in the back with the crew, and performed her parts as the Angel of Death slightly inebriated. It makes for some of the most amazing moments with her gestures, looks and the wonderful eyeroll that she gives at the end.
Thank you both so much for checking this out!! If you want to hear more from them, anything from the "Hormonally Yours" album (which this is from) is great. I especially recommend "I Don't Care" if you want to hear more of Siobhan though.
