I do a coolant flush every few years on my cars, I replace it with the OEM stuff and a new thermostat, I've never had a problem with rust or sludge. If you buy a neglected car then yeah maybe you need to do this.

I hate to break it to some of you but there are several reasons why someone would chemically flush their cooling system. And why the Author of this short doesn't explain this to you guys is beyond me. The number one reason that someone would flush is if they let their coolant go too long without changing it because the inside of your hoses start to deteriorate slightly over time and can contaminate your cooling system as well as small gasket particles that break off from tightened parts or scraped gaskets from parts changes that falls into coolant ports ect.. Also, if you have mixed different types of antifreeze (and most do because they forget from fill to fill what type they used) it could and probably will start to sludge up inside your cooling system over time. There is also standard maintenance. If you have let it go too long the rods inside or your rad. will start to restrict and your car will start to run hot. Just saying guys. Maybe keep an open mind and thank the guy for passing on his knowledge to you all. Antifreeze doesn't last forever. It does need to be changed over a period of time. And as far as using tap water goes, I suppose if you have hard water it would be best to use distilled water. Although, in my 40yr career as a professional dealer trained mechanic I have never seen anyone use distilled water for a flush.

when the tap water reaches boiling temp it releases contaminates like lead and chlorine, although the quantity varies based on location. better just spend the extra $2 on gallon distilled water jugs. plus some of that water will stay in the block and contaminate your coolant over time

Distilled water in 1 gal bottles are the same price as drinking water where I am at. Over 40 years of experience, you should have spotted limescale and hard water deposits like I have. There is no reason to use tap water as it has impurities. Use distilled or de-ionized.

Well, when I changed the coolant on a motorcycle with a non-original one, I drained the old one out. Then I poured distilled water inside and started the bike and waited until the fan came on. Then I drained it out again and poured in new coolant. The reason I did this was to flush out the old coolant so the residue wouldn't mix with the new coolant. That I used distilled water instead of tap water so that the tap water would not leave scale in the engine.

Great idea if you then flush it out and add thermocure. Prestone radiator flush does not do enough if you have a rusty block. The rust is coming from the block normally. Thermocure removes the rust and coats the metal so it won't rust again. Prestone is OK for a normal flush and loosening up rust before using thermocure.

@Big 1 if your using detergent to clean the inside and dont wash it out properly , you can make it worse then it was before.
you could tell if you need to replace the coolant by measuring the ph, and putting fresh clean coolant in is not the answear, you might have leaking gasket and over a fairly short period of time your coolant will go bad again and your just wasting money
and most of those cleaners are just snake oil, if you have rust, sludge or lime inside , some liquids are designed to remove certain things, beacause you either need acidic or alkaline detergent to takle a certain problem at a time

I guess distilled will be best but will be costly plus using regular water should hurt the system much since it won't be sitting inside for long. Maybe last flush should be done with distilled for sure to stay on the safe side.

The only issue with flushing using water is that there's still water left in the block when you're done flushing. So sure you can fill it back up with 50/50 mix but it won't be true 50/50 due to the left behind water. I recommend you do coolant flushes with actual coolant and no water
