I'm just a guy in Kansas playing around in his garage. Come along in my adventures riding, racing, modifying and repairing my small fleet of unusual misfits.
Jake, you won't believe it. My father purchased new in 1957 a 57 Fairlane 500 Convertible , black and white two tone. That's the car he dated my mom with. We still have pics of it. You have a cool car. Good luck with it.
The trim pieces you don't know what they are they're for the sun visors the sun visor slip on that Long rod so now you know.
I love how the headliner is the original 50's alien mind ray protection series.
It is great to see someone buying and keep running a 4 door sedan. Beautiful car. Wishing you the best of luck with it. It would be great to see more 4dr and wagon classics.
Aw hell. Now I need to get the '56 Oldsmobile in my garage back together and on the road.
Good luck, I had a neighbor with one back in the 70's. He said parts were scarce & expensive
LOOK ! A Grimes sighting! 😊😊
The sepia toned musical montage thru older section of town was 100% solid
I believe the white arms with square base are for the sun visors. Thank you for saving this ol' girl. You're working in reverse from a bunch of us. We started here and moved into modern cars. Always enjoy your content - congrats on a great car.
A new video from Jake is always a fine adventure. Even better if Grimes comes along. Not my kind of car but pop the hood and proceed down memory lane.
Knowing youtube and your audience, i imagine this video wouldnt perform well, but damn is this thing cool! Its awesome to see you messing with older vehicles, the sort of stuff i love!
I am hoping to get some of that Vice Grip Garage audience with this one :P
@@100PercentJake hell yeah bud! Best of luck to you!
@@LM-id1bb seeing other VGG clones that won't work it works for him as that has always been his TH-cam persona it just comes off as a cheap knock off when other people imitate him.
@@LM-id1bb yeah he really kicked off the will it run boom so much so that he's backing off from them and having to get more radical because there's so many of those videos now with the nearest rusty 70s $500 shitbox in a field.
Do like the Chevrolet T-shirt 100 % is wearing while working on his Ford ! 😅😅😅
Ah ... the irony.
My mom had a 57 convertible in red/white two tone with white top. Stunning car. Made regular appearances in our local parades for years.
Don't know if anyone else mentioned it, but i think those 2 "unknown" white triangular pieces (if that's what you were talking about) are brackets for sun visors. If there's no headliner it makes sense that they were kept. If that's the objects you were speaking ofin the pile of extra bits and pieces.
70% Jake, 20% Grimes, and 10% alcohol by volume. The "new" car seems to fit well with the cozy looking shop Grimes is working out of now.
Cozy is a polite way to put it
RE PARTS, hey Jake, I think the parts that have a plate with a rod sticking out are sun visor brackets (judging from your video)...
btw sorry if I'm the millionth person to say that.
Awesome vids
I had a '57 Ford with a 272 and automatic. Those transmissions are actually 3 speeds. In Drive, it starts in 2nd gear. In the L position it starts in 1st. You can actually take off in L, wind it out, then shift into Drive, then as soon as it shifts pull it back down to L, and it will stay in 2nd until you move to Drive and shift to 3rd gear.
I'm impressed with Grimes' knowledge of a car that is 67 years old. ☹️
Cars are cars. 😊
Love it, when I was 15/16 I got may dad to buy a fairlan, diff trim then yours this was in1959, it was a mechanocs car and he talked to my dad for awhile. It had a 312 4 barrel and FX tranny, we added outside oilers. It was pretty quick as I found out try to beat a 63 409 chev I took him off the line by a good car length. Doeskin tan and white. Good luck with this one.
We had 57 T Bird full disc on it and 57 Pontiac fender ornaments.
Remember Robert Mitchum's in 'Thunder Road'!!
Heads up if you replace the windshield, the 4 door windshield is about an inch taller than the 2 door windshield. A friend of mine is into the 57 Fords and we discovered that trying to swap windshields between a 2 door donor and a 4 door car.
These 1957 Fords were about the first American cars I'd ever seen as a child. I was enamoured with them then...I'm enamoured with this one now. What a beauty! Enjoy the living heck out of it!
Your description of current car shows couldn't be more accurate.
there's radwood witch is the same thing with 45 years olds instead of 70 year olds and then a 20 something car meet witch usually ends with the cops called because the 18 year old with the TDI or 10 year old audi started 2 stepping in the parking lot.
I am heartened by the knowledge that you are not a slave to garage organizing.
Great video Jake, looking forward to seeing more of this mean machine!!! 😉
Such a cool car and as a plus, no check engine light
I want to get one of them cars but it's got to be a Fairlane 500 with the retractable hardtop if you have never seen one of them they are awesome
My father had this exact year in blue... After doing some repairs with his uncle, they took a test drive, and the hood decided to unlatch and wrap itself around the windshield. After that, he had a Blue 1957 Fairlane with a red hood. But after seeing the hood open forward, maybe it wasn't a 500.
Hoovie is rapidly approaching your location.
He has his checkbook out.
Looks like that push rod has Peyronie's disease. I bet they did that with the heater hoses to keep the length to hook it back up in the future.
Why is Tyler touching gross domestics?!?!
It's a beauty. I especially like that it's a 4-door post sedan that has survived and wasn't sacrificed maybe 30 years ago to save 2-door hardtop.
For improved reliabilty give it a new mechanical fuel pump[ engine block, lobe on camshaft drives the fuel pump, install when fuel pump drive arm is on base circle of cam, not on the lobe or you will have trouble bolting in the fuel pump to block. A fresh, or more recent diaphragm in the fuel pump will improve reliability, unless it vapour locks, which is another reason to go with electric LOW PRESSURE fuel pump instead.
i believe they used a road draft tubw instead of a pcv, pcvs came later
Oh one more thing change out the vacuumed wipers to electric. Not expensive and the vacuumed didn't really work well when new
Nice old Ford. Unless the trans has been swapped, it would be a 3 speed dual range Fordomatic. 2-3 in drive and 1-2-3 if you fully depress the pedal or shift into L to start then back to D. The 2 speed Fordomatics didn't come until 1959. The old Y blocks are pretty easy to work on. I think you'll have a fun time with it.
That is a cool new project! 😊👍🏻 I really like your videos man! 😍👍🏻
Just stumbled into your channel. Great content. You earned a new subscriber.
Nice wheels, errr, boat!! Enjoy. Cheers!! 😊
You boys are havin' some fun. Keep it up. When do the fuzzy dice get hung?
Welcome to classic car ownership! She's a beauty.
@1:10 - why am I picturing the scene from Joe Dirt where he buys the car from the widow (who threw her husband in the wood chipper.)
Love these old Fords.
The automatic trans is a 3 speed. All 57 Ford engines have vac advance. The 292 is better than a 312 for several reasons. Yblocks have exceptional valve trains and are very durable engines, (with a proper center cam bearing). Never get near a spinning old fixed blade fan even at idle it can kill you. Change the wiring but don't see a problem with the rubber fuel hose on the engine? To bleed the coolant system? Do you not see that big radiator tank mostly full of air? Its a flushing port. Do you know what will happen if you port the crank case to the intake? You guys need proper information sources but the body is worth the rebuild.... and trade that rear bumper for one off a custom..... aaaand install front disk brakes, cheap and easy.
Ford Fairlane the car > Ford Fairlane the movie
the beauty of older cars is, if you wreck one, it'll wreck you back. you HAVE TO know how to drive and if you don't, you'll pay the price. ❤
We restore and collect classic fords. If there is anything we can do as far as advice please don’t hesitate to ask. You have a great car, and we are glad to help keeping one on the road.
I like it, Jake 🤙
Good job Jake! I love those 1950s Fords. They sold really well, so I am not sure how car shows became tri-5 and Camaro festivals. Enjoy it!
I spotted a 57 Ford on a trailer heading to a neighborhood away when I was around 14. I found the guy who bought it. He said "I'm going to fix it up". A year later it was a show car
I never pegged you for a specific type of car nut....except for your BMW habit, which I don't understand...but that's ok, I'm not working on them....my vote doesn't count. btw...I think the Corvette was a great buy for you! But this 57 Fairline? I think that's a great boat to add to the collection. You can go out on the lake with it....and take it to other lake regattas, etc. Did you register it yet? I don't see the registration numbers on the sides of the bow. LOL Seriously Jake, this ride is cool and sometimes it's good to get out of out comfort zones and try something new. Look forward to the restoration!
I suspect Jake likes BMW's the same reason I do there a pain in the ass when they need work, but when there fixed or working enough there fantastic all around do everything cars just it's not toyota camry.
@@TwoDollarGararge Yeah, I hear ya, when the BMW is working, it's a great day to drive! A co-worker had one and we used to laugh at each other on how much we liked the other's ride. I have a 2015 Lexus RX350 (Toyota Camry SUV). His car was in the shop a whole lot more. I'd rather not work on my car if I can avoid it.
@itsnotme07 I'm on my 2nd porsche and 8th bmw I'm used to having a less than perfect car with small issues. It's fun to drive that makes you forget about the money.
Why is this 57 starting in Park? This car starts only in Neutral. Where is the original Neutral safety switch? Also, please get rid of that electric fuel pump and rebuild the mechanical pump it came with. You went through the steps to fix the generator and avoid converting to an alternator so why not do the same for the fuel system? Get non ethanol gas and use that bottle of lead substitute and don’t worry about vapor lock.
We found out that the NSS was bypassed
Green coolant only for copper/brass rads.
I love how you’re rocking the steering wheel a quarter turn as you’re going straight and the car doesn’t respond 😂 reminds me of my 56 Studebaker
Janet Leigh drove the same car in Psycho. What's wrong with the fuel system? they worked fine in 1957, why can't anyone now understand how to fix them? The fuel pump comes apart, you install new pieces in the correct order, put it together and start driving. That also appears to be a dual-action pump with one side being the vacuum pump for the wipers. People repaired those pumps on the side of the road back then. It's not a road draft "thingy", it's a road draft tube. A "thingy" is a...never mind. Have fun with it but try to be a little more respectful that it's a classic car and not a junker you're trying to make a YT video on.
Another thing that will greatly help drivability would be to put on a 4 barrel carburetor, probably 600 cfm with electric choke and vacuum secondaries. It would be much more tunable and forgiving throughout the rev range and power demands.
You'll love the next episode with this.
@@100PercentJake Combining foreshadowing with a segue. Nice.
The shots of the Ford reminded me of the tv show The Wonder Years. Well done as always, Jake.
You need to remove the intake to fix it.
Props to you for getting it back on the road, that was probably the old guys pride and joy, imagine the stories it could tell.
Wow!!! That car is beautiful! Great cruiser❤
I'm using a mix of propane and butane (camp stove fuel) in an old R12 system. it works fine. With straight propane it was too cold on the low side at R12 pressures and things freeze. Butane bumps the temp at that pressure and puts it closer to the R12 temps. Basically at 30psi on the low side it can't be below about 35F or the evaporator just ices up.
I think that `1957 was the year that Ford outsold Chevy.
in 1957 the fords outsold the chevys.
True enough, but if you count Pontiac and Olds which were selling close variations of the same design, GM was probably the real winner that year compared to Ford-Mercury. Also, as much as I love old Fords, there were probably some good reasons why there are so many '57 Chevy survivors still around compared to '57 Ford Fairlanes.
looks like the car wizard lost another mechanic, hmmmm! i'm thinking he's crappy boss.
I recommend a progression ignition distributer if you want to eek out some more power. Little pricy. Junkyard digs has a few videos and the car sounds way happier with one
Buy a set of freeze plugs amd a block heater. After removing old freeze plugs you will neet a cut up coat hanger which you can reconfigure [non-bluetooth] to fit inside the now open large holes in the block and ream out the rust sediment with coat hanger and garden hose to allow water and coolant [rustprooofing] to actually surround the cooling jackets around the cylinders to absorb heat for the first time in 50 years. Install new freeze plugs and and block heater [optional depending on location] and the engine can cool itself properly..
Got to love the old girl. Put most modern crap to shame for DYI fixes.
Oh did you know the 57Ford outsold the 57Chevy? You can do a one wire gm alternator conversion much cheaper.than what was quoted . Check around old hot riders or with the wizards tractor buddy they might have a used one to save money. Also check with John Ross he had an aftermarket full injection system that would go nice on your y block . Remember to put zink additives in your oil when you change it, to protect your cam and lifters. Use ethanol free gas in it. The alcohol will eat up your old tank and lines.
This is so much more my style than a perpetually broken bmw( bust out my wallet again)
Ordered a 1 wire alternator and the adapter bracket a few days ago. Stoked to put it in along with a PCV conversion so I don't smoke out every intersection I pull up to!
and don’t forget to use lead substitute in your gas.
Thank you for the great video, Jake. You did a great job describing the thought process behind getting a car you don't see at most car shows.
In 1957, we were in NYC, about to emigrate to England. My dad rented a Fairlane 500 to drive our cases to the port. Back in San Francisco, we'd had a Renault 4CV and then an aluminum-bodied Panhard Dyna. I remember being mesmerized by the Galaxy's size, especially the enormous steering wheel.
1:13 The 1957 Fords were absolutely not a ""knock-off of a '57 Bel-Air". 1957 was the last year of the three-year body cycle for the Chevrolet. In other words, it's a 1955 body. The 1957 Ford was the FIRST year of the Ford three year body cycle. The '57 Chev compared to the '57 Ford was taller and stubbier. Both Ford and Chrysler went "longer, lower, wider" in 1957 and actually sold better than the Chev in 1957 because they looked "newer".
I think the 1957 Chevrolet, especially the Bel-Air but the other models as well, is a fine looking car but the Ford for 1957 is very different.
I've always thought Ford handled the whole fins issue better. Chrysler had their Forward Look "Suddenly It's 1960" design with huge tail fins. Chevrolet was working with a three year old body shell and did a decent job but the fins ended up as vertical triangles. Ford canted small fins at a 45 degree angle and made them both a continuation of the side profile but also nicely integrated into the round "jet exhaust" tail lamps. To me it just looks more complete as a design.
Boomer here. F cking epic!
Don't adjust voltage regulator.
Generators don't putout much if any charge at idle.
57 Ford wouldn't have safety belts when new.
Your oil file cap is vented, don't mess with PVC.
Very cool, Jake. It's primitive and cool was my motivation for taking on this 1972 D100 that had sat for over a decade. Plus it was basically free. But now roughly $1,500 later the 225 slant needs a head gasket. This video was after I finally made the brakes work. th-cam.com/video/PkJ4BGaFzcw/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared
The smooth-face wheel covers are '56 Ford. The dog dish cap is '52-54. Did you know that the '57 Ford outsold Chevy that year by 7200 cars?
My first car (in high school) was a two door Fairlane 500. If I only make one comment, it would be PAINT THAT DASH . No dash came from the factory white. It will reflect onto the dash and become a safety hazard. It would need to be a dull darker blue.
In Canada, Ford Canada, had a Meteor Division, which was across between a Ford and a Mercury/ Edsel and wasn't sold in the U.S.
The car is literally in almost mint condition and your wondering if it can be saved. Is this video a joke or what you drove it. Me personally when I ask myself if I can save a particular vehicle it's literally got no drivetrain. It's rotted to the point it's amazing it's not in a junk yard. It has no interior literally nothing no seats nothing. A shell a husk with a VIN number and a title. And it says please buy me because my current owner is an idiot and I'll never see the road again. Challenge accepted and the journey begins.
My father got a leased car every two years for his Midwest salesman’s travels. He was able to “add options” at his personal expense. He always added air conditioning and “the safety package” to these basic sedans. A state trooper told him one time that the officer had “ never unbelted a dead man” which my father took as an endorsement for lap belts.
If you plan on upgrading the electrical system to a modern system then why did you buy classic car. You should keep it original.
The unknown parts look like the sunvisor mounts
Yup! It took a few minutes of googling "weird moving stick piece 57 ford" before I finally figured out what I was looking at
Leaded petrol. in '57.... Change the valve seats, or use an additive to keep the engine healthy......
If I was you I would go with the factory mechanical fuel pump and you should take compressed air and blow out the fuel lines back to the tank it will blow all the crap out of the lines
After listening to you list all the problems with it, are you sure it isn't a BMW with a very elaborate body kit?
Your mechanic friend has cats...
😂😂😂... I know because I do too... LOL
Finish it and flip it for a few k profit.
Agreed
Since it's a four door maybe custom. Continental kit, fender skirts.
nice purchase! Your GF looks less than amused about it though..lol
I’m jealous. You have leinenkugals beer in Wichita.
@34:52 - The vision of a not so happy GF. I have a feeling Jake paid for that later.
Why would you want to make a fool of yourself on You tube. By not knowing what you are doing.
My grandpa had a 57 convertable top fairlane. One thing I remember is he always used a "lead additive" mixed in the fuel. Something about valve seats maybe? I don't remember.
Good call! I'm sure that that old motor really requires some lead to keep the valves happy.
Keep the tech out and keep Uncle Sam OUT!!!
And have fun on the DL.
Swap in one of those sweet BMW V10’s for reliability.
Now you have gotten yourself a real car !
Your camera is not happy with the sun reflecting off that white paint. urk
28:39 Grimes literally made me do a spit take lmfao
😅
My brother in law has the same car in Oklahoma. His is yellow and white.
What a great looking car
more videos of this fairlane please!
At least you got the push rod out without having to take the intake off.😊
fun video, great job!
Wowza…nice ride…!!!
How’s Hoovie like it…?
Wondered what happened to Mr Grimes…
Geese Wizard has some turnover mechanic’s…!!!
I’ve been working on my own stuff 😊
