    9 years out of the game due to a back injury. Just getting back into it recently. Saved up for the stealth irons and just brought some home a few days ago. I like them a lot and hit them well. Saving again now for the rest of it. Found your channel very helpful. Keep it up!

    Quality as usual.
    I agree re: the loft, as a golfer irrespective of handicap, you hit each iron a certain distance, the number at the base of the club is irrelevant if you know your yardage.

  • @hudsonrilke
    @hudsonrilke 2 ปีที่แล้ว +26

    Great review and I agree the loft number is all relative. That said my AP2 7 iron goes a fraction under 150 yards and my mates are hitting 9 irons that far. Stronger lofts and faster swings. Sometimes makes me feel a bit weak but if I get the lower score then what’s the problem?

      I have the 710's and the 7 iron is 35deg. I hit it around 140 yards but who cares? We are probably playing off a lower handicap if we're using these.

      @chrisgirling1097 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Have a look at Bry Roberts long drive channel were he compares his Nike 7 iron at 35 degrees to a P790 at 29 degrees, longer distance from P790 as you'd expect but delving in to the figures you find that peak height and decent angles are roughly the same for both irons

    Played with them for the first time yesterday, absolutely love them. Not sure if psychological- but straight and long. Decided to keep them. Shaved 0.3 off handicap to 17.6 - working towards “average”! Great video…

    @brianmicklich9292 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Absolutely true. The experts assume they know best for you. I went to a PGA Superstore to try and demo some Ping Blueprints. The “expert” didn’t even pay attention to what I wanted and determined that I needed some Taylormade P790’s. He never asked about my golf history. I’m a 4 handicap and have hit blades most of my life. I let him do his spiel and then politely left. I right now use some Ben Hogan Icons and Wilson Staff blades, but will end up with some Miura 101’s. I love the look and feel of a blade, and maybe it’s a mind game thing, but if I like the club and feel confident with it, I play my best game regardless of brand!

    I’ve been a callaway man since the big Bertha days, but after buying a Mavrik driver and not being that impressed, I tried a TM SIM 2 driver and wow! The difference was significant. I bought one the same day and have been hitting it very well . My swing speed is only 98 mph on average but The ball flies off the face . So that led me to look at the TM irons too. I tried the P790 and nearly bought them, but I waited for the stealth irons to come out. I had a fitting and I was blown away. The sound at impact would have been enough for me to buy them, but I could shape shots left and right with ease. The ball goes farther for the number on the bottom( of course) so I am just getting use to the adjustment. One word of caution. If your swing speed is quite low, then you won’t see much benefit from the longer clubs after a 6 iron.

Took a chance on these Stealth irons.....and they seem to dial back the years. Comfortably hitting shots i was 20yrs ago for distance. Not won anything this year so far but just need to eradicate the mistakes. All in all a great iron

    Great video, as per usual. This is camera-nerdy, but I super appreciate the use of shallow depth of field you employ - really takes the videos to a much higher level.
    As a player of the original Sim Max (not OS) irons, I've got to say how impressed I am with the looks of this new iteration. Love the (slightly) slimmed down effect, and the backs are just beautiful, especially in comparison. I've had no issues with the lofts being stronger - instead of a 5-iron, I'm pulling a 7 - just know your distances and it's all the same (except making my old 3-iron much easier to hit now as a 5 ;) ).
    When it's time to upgrade (definitely not yet), these (or whatever iteration they're on) will definitely be on the list.
    One question, though - how do you feel these compare to the PXG 0211s? I quite like the looks of those, and the price certainly can't be beat (especially when on sale). Any difference at all in feel/launch/spin?
    Thanks for all the content - truly appreciated!

    April is when the irons will be hitting the fitters. I tried the TM irons on Trackman since 2018. Each time, I’ve compared them with my current irons (PING G). Fitters look at the data, shrug their shoulders and I keep hitting what I have. I’ve not played with Taylormade irons, I own and play a TM M4 driver and bought TM hybrids but put them in the closet and kept using my custom fit Cleveland Mashie 3,4,5 hybrids. My point is, get fitted, play what you have confidence in. That’s what makes it fun.

    Totally agree with you on the loft. Why would the loft of a club matter to anyone. To me it’s all about performance. Average yardage for that club is what matters to me. Being a super senior if technology can help me from losing distance I’m all in. If they make that iron “Stealth” all the better. In golf they never ask you how just how many.

    I think these look great and they are easy to hit. I just picked my set up today. My normal 7i was total distance 155. I am hitting these 7i total 185-191 with 81 club head speed. I can’t wait to try these tomorrow on the course. Got the 5-AW and 4H. Changed from Mavrik Max clubs. My only problem is my 7 wood rogue st is same loft as my new 5i at 21 degrees. Most likely won’t need both as they will probably be same distance. May sell my 5w and 7w and get a 3was my 5w and 7w are fairly close in distance.

    The Loft Police…😂
    I just demoed the P790 and the stealth and came away really impressed with the stealths. I don’t have a fast swing speed so the stealth fit me well.
    I was getting an extra 10-15 with the 7 iron compared to my gamer which is 2 degrees weaker but the stealth got great launch with good spin and decent.
    And I think they look great. The top line doesn’t look big and chunky at all too me. Very playable looking.
    I want more distance in my game in a good looking forgiving package.
    Think I’m gonna put these stealth’s in my bag.

  • @johnk.atchley5079
    @johnk.atchley5079 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good review, logical, pragmatic, realistic and helpful. You make a good point that what the average player should focus on is having clubs that will give him distances X Y and Z, not which club number it is. There are excellent fitters doing demonstrations of these irons that I have watched and who actually hit 207 to 212 with the Stealth 7 iron. The thought the clubs were good, touched on the same points you did. But for them personally they felt the distances were more than they needed and might leave them with gap problems at both the long iron and wedge end. For them, the more important thing was tight dispersion and consistency and repetition of carry and spin. But you are right about the average recreational golfer. By the way, one thing I wonder about is whether these irons with so many parts will be durable for years to come and when exposed to wide ranges of hot and cold temps as they sit in players trunks (boots to you).

    I guess I am one of the rare breed that really isn't bothered by what my clubs look like. I get fitted every 5 years and play whatever jumbled up mix of heads and shafts that give the best numbers/gapping. My current bag: Original Rogue driver, Mizuno Fli Hi 2 iron, Rogue 3 and 4 hybrids ... Mizuno JPX 921 Fli Hi 5, 6 and 7. 8 through GW Mizuno JPX 921 HM. Callaway Jaws 56 and 60. I do see not much use for a 5w now a days due to my 3i hybrid hitting about the same distance and cleaner on average. Something for me to work on is understanding how far a clean hit 5w should go so I play it when I should and that's what winter video practice is for :)

    I really like the look of this iron but the lofts are crazy. I'm talking about the 6 degrees of loft between PW and AW vs 2.5 degrees between the 4 and 5 irons. I think TM assumes that the golfers that buy these irons are high handicappers that have a huge front to back dispersion they won't notice that the 3 lowest lofted iron all fly nearly the same yardage.

    Looks: TM have a winner, seriously good looking for a GI/SGI iron. I love the fact that TM has gone the opposite way to so many others on the back with no decals other than their name and the Stealth brand, I call the infestation of decals on the back of irons, Cobraitis because I blame Cobra for it.
    Lofts: I agree with Andy, I do not really care what the lofts are provided each iron delivers a consistent set of numbers, and there is about 10-12 yards gap between carry distances of each club.
    In terms of performance: Again I agree with Andy, the issue is whether the irons deliver sufficient stopping power on greens. The spin rates are slightly lower than ideal from the loft they have but nothing unreasonable but the flip side is that the peak height & descent angles are higher than I would have expected from the loft. So unless you only play on links courses with firm/very firm greens these look to have good stopping power, more than I would expect from the loft.
    I do, however, have one concern which would need to be tested. Some of the loft gaps between clubs are very large - 6 degrees between 9i & PW, 6 degrees between PW & AW, 5 degrees between 8i & 9i. I would want c. 12 yards gap in carry between clubs and I do worry that the large loft gaps might deliver a significantly bigger gap. Testing with a complete set would be nice to check whether or not my concern is misplaced

    For me, the conundrum I now have is that my irons need to be sandwiched between my 5 hybrid (23 degree) and my 48 degree wedge. Looking at the lofts, I'd probably need to have the stealth irons weaker by about 1 degree, and then slightly strengthen my 5 hybrid - and then it very may well slot in nicely from 6 to PW!

    • @guyr7351
      @guyr7351 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That seems to be the way the game is going, longer irons replaced by hybrids, more wedges for the short game.
      I think most of the courses average golfers play, are off the yellow tees, (UK) a lot of par 4 holes are a good drive / 3wood then a short iron into the green, so the traditional mid irons rarely used

  • @harryp.3920
    @harryp.3920 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    My current irons are 4i - LW at 24* - 58* and really can't hit lower than 24*. My gapping, trajectory, etc. are good so I don't see how I can get the same performance (gapping) with 2 fewer irons since the stealth 6i is 24*. Also, maybe you are saying that I might be able to hit the 21* Stealth because of the tech but I am sure that there is nowhere I can demo that club especially off the grass.

    In my experience in using game improvement irons easy to hit, great speed, low spin, high launch, high towering shots, steep descending angle, hit the green and stop, but only when the greens are soft. Hard greens they hit and keep on going over the green. I don't have that problem with forged blades. Pluses and minuses, choose wisely for your game!

      @@mrwoo33 Actually, not to be contradictory, but if you order directly from TM, you can, in fact, go up or down on loft - I'm at the website now. You just have to select "customize this club" on the "Stealth" (or any club, for that matter) page, and there you can adjust both lie angle (up to 4 degress flat/upright) and loft (up to 2 degrees weak/strong). That would make the 7-iron 30, which while still strong, is much less "oh god the loft police are coming" and more "yeah, so what, I can hit my 7 iron as far as you hit your 6 - I'm THAT strong cough cough." :)

    Good review we’ll explained. Clearly good clubs that will help many players. Could be a problem for specific yardages as so many of these game improvement irons end up flying off the face but often the difference between the front and the back of the green, not knowing which it will be. Still if it is on the green that would be useful.

    If you prioritize “look” I prefer the p790s. But if these irons perform for you, that is much more important and you have spent your money wisely.

    • @TheAverageGolfer
      @TheAverageGolfer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would say these are more playable than the P790 for most and around £50 an iron less in cost

      The Average Golfer. I’ve recently opted for the P790 and am not sold on them. As an 18 hcp I was apprehensive as to whether my swing would be good/consistent enough for the P790, perhaps I should have opted for the stealth, but the again they weren’t around October time last year.

    I'm not a Taylormade fan but I would never buy a iron named after a driver, there resale value plummets after a new driver is released. I would go P790 if I was looking for distance and improvement!!

    PXG 0211, thin top line, forgiving, looks superb,,,,,,,,,,,,, AND CHEAP, proper cheap ! Less than £700 for 5 iron to L wedge. Other manufacturers wake up and smell the roses.

    A lot of what you say is true....But for a golfer who is 15 to 20 handicap and games these irons an want to stay there OK but because of the lofts, A 7 iron at 28 deg, my Hogan is 34 and Wilson is a 35...This would blow your mind when playing irons with this great of loft difference...To me this is a faults sence of security....Why don't these golf makers make a game improvement iron with some real lofts??? Don't think I will be getting interested in Taylor irons thou these look great...Mizuno 225 would be a better fit for me and a players improvement iron as well...Thanks for you view point...

    • @TheAverageGolfer
      @TheAverageGolfer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      When the manufacturer moves the CG so far back to help promote high launch there has to be a stronger loft to avoided a ‘ballooning’ effect, in other words the ball goes high but not forward, hence the stronger loft 👍

    The number on the club is irrelevant. Loft is irrelevant. As long as you have a club that goes the distance you need it to and stop as quickly as you need it to, all is good. But that aesthetic? Yeah, that's a "nah" from me.
