Enjoyed this video a lot! Beautiful courses - it was fun to see them, and fun to see you hitting an M2 so well. Makes me think there's still hope for my M4 : ). (My game just doesn't deserve a better driver yet). Enjoyed getting to see these courses - was TH-cam time well spent!
A couple of years ago, I watched Tiger and Charlie (Woods) play the PNC event. That was the one where the Woods' birdied the last 11 (or something like that) to finish 2nd. The next morning, I saw an interview with Charlie. He said Tiger wouldn't let him play anything else but blades. I got to thinking that maybe practicing with a less forgiving set of clubs might be advantageous. So, I went out to the local used sporting goods stores, and ended up finding a set of Titleist DCI (black) irons -- 4i to PW for $85 US. They looked like they had maybe been used 1 or 2 seasons. The long irons were pristine. After hitting them on my simulator for a few weeks, I put them in the bag and gamed them for about 6 months. They were every bit as effective as my Mizuno JPX 921 HM irons. The lofts are almost 1 club weaker (48 degree PW). But loft for loft, they are pretty equivalent. The DCIs are not as forgiving, but the dispersion long to short is considerably better. If I got these re-shafted in graphite (vs. the current steel, stiff), I could absolutely play these and I don't think it would have a huge impact on my ability to score. Pretty amazing exercise, considering the Titleist irons are from the early 90's-- 30-some years ago.
First brand new clubs i ever bought myself were the x22's. Absolute rocket ships. You could hit them anywhere on the face and have no idea. The 4 iron was like a hybrid

I had a set of X-22 irons, they were good for me. I liked them.
I haven't tuned in for a while so I will say, your swing is so much better...but why do you sometimes have a 2-part move? The swing is all about FLOW. You've done a wonderful job eliminating/reducing your major inside to over the top move. The stop and go thing makes no sense. I've seen a few try it but they dismissed weeks later. I'm 72, reasonably fit and still play a set of Callaway X Tours 4i to PW and a GW . I have Phil's 56° and 64° SW (14° bounce) and LW (10°bounce). I still love them. Keep up the great work...play!

I always wondered how do you custom fit someone who has a very inconsistent golf swing. Once fitted, should the swing tendencies change do they lose the "custom rated" status? Great video and location.

I added a used M2 to the bag last year. It's a rip roaring driver. SAS Golf had recommended it. Belter.

Andy...if ever proof was needed that we DON'T need to be custom-fit, that was it right there!...well played!...I've never seen you drive the ball so straight!...and the 'breeze block' wasn't so bad either!...as for the swing change, I spotted it from your very first shot...but please explain the rationale
As I said you don’t need to be custom fit but why would you choose not to be? What’s the negative to optimising your golf clubs, it’s a big investment so I fail to understand why anyone would suggest it’s a bad idea.
@@TheAverageGolfer Primarily because PXG is not sold at the retail level in golf shops and PXG fitting can be quite difficult as well as time consuming and expensive to travel to a PXG fitting studio. That's why.

Guess your swing change is from Mike Alexander, which I've been using recently to great effect.
I actually got it from a Nick Faldo tutorial from the 90’s
Unfortunately for you mate is that I dispute your opinion as all it is. Just an opinion and I get that. I, on the other hand was very, very fortunate to have witnessed and can verify if need be with their permission of course, that one individual aged about 40ish at the time that we became club friends and was an officially registered 2 handicap. The one thing that struck me about this amazing individual was his mixed bag of clubs with one particular club a 20 year old persimmon 1 driver which if my memory serves me right, was either a Ben Hogan or Jack Nicklaus as was his 5 wood. The next surprise was the only 2 long irons were the 7 & 5 which at the time were 10 years old but the other thing was the variety of wedges. A pitcher, gap, sand, and a lob (which I wasn't aware was a golf club in them days) and were a mix of brands as well. We played many rounds together. Most were club comps but occasionally the odd social at other courses in the region. He was a very low key individual with a tall wirey frame of 6ft 1-2 in. From the first time I witnessed this effortless, smooth rythmic swing he performed from start to finish, I was totally blown away by the accuracy and distance he possessed. At the time which was from 2000-2008, I was at lost as to who I could compare his swing to of the elite world class golf players of those years before or after. His ball striking was so pure the ball would defy gravity for distance and accuracy was unbelieveable. His ability to finesse his wedges around or to the green was to know that having a pair of hands of softness that was so intune to demonstrate such a sensitive feel from the palms of his hands all the way to the face of whatever wedge he had but more so to allow the specific type of shot expected from whatever position he had in front of him. Wether it was a shot onto the green which were primarily between 120m wedge in or a 1m bump in from the egdes of the green or a softly executed green side bunker flop shot, it didn't matter the circumstances. Today in 2024 I have yet to have met or known a pure golf exponent of the swing mechanix and in many occasions, a sense of almost total control and purpose with clubs that today would test any technically advanced club wether it be the current models that could match the performance he generated from those ancient comparisons he valued that gave him that confidence to navigate on any type of course in service today. His uniqueness to me was why I loved the game of golf.Because sports equipment change in the blink of an eye as technical advancement advances within minutes, hours and days. And so has the golf swing to a certain point. No one in the early days had workout routines or swing coaches let alone mental coaches etc back then or the golf balls and clubs we use today. But no one had a swing like a Ben Hogan, Sam Snead, Robert Trent Jones or Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods. They were all unique and were not created but were born with a natural talent. They created there own style. Give them a "Masher" and the gift of natural skill was self evident.

I also hate 3 wood, i listened to you and got a 7 wood (xxio12, no need for xxio13, 12 better), it hit as far as 3 wood with 5x successs rate and 10x forgiveness
Currently in Spain myself visiting my brother and playing some golf, weather's great, foods excellent but courses are expensive. Still it's not the UK cold wet and miserable. So we'll happy overall. Also drinking too much lol 8.45am tee off tomorrow.

Did you actually say why you were using these clubs? It felt like you were about to tell us multiple times but never quite got there.
I initially assumed it was because an airline lost his clubs but it turns out that he played someone else’s clubs to prove that you need to be custom fit but ended up proving you don’t need to be custom fit but you should still to be custom fit. Something like that!

It might pay to check the sound recording while you are playing, can always hear all your breathing. The huffing and puffing is a bit off putting. I don't know if maybe it's an uncovered mic

I think if you are a 5ft 9 player of average build with an average swing speed with average strength and an average transition you can definitely play of the shelf clubs. Like most of us we don’t fall into those parameters, that’s even before you consider dynamic delivery and how you swing the club. I would say we can all play standard clubs but to get the very best out of the game, fitting or should I say a good fitting will allow you to play your best.

I dont bother with custom fit .. iv had it in the past and was standard for everything .. so once you decide what type of irons or driver you want.. no problem in buying off shelf or online .. i play if 6.. if i was off plus 6 i might see the benefit..
You was ‘standard for everything’…….what is a standard club head speed? What was your standard shot shape? What was your standard bad shot/miss? Sounds to me you had a bad custom fit experience 🤷♂️

And have went between reg and stiff over the years without seeing any difference..
I'm not saying it's not good for certain players - just think for most amateur players it's bit over rated.. as you you proved ..

Played all three of those courses back in april bit tricky when you dont know the layout but all superb. If your still there andy seek out the big bull steak house in torremolinos would highly recommend.
I returned home on Saturday, agreed all quite tricky and a little nervy on the tee

So we never did find out why you played with that odd set of clubs. Given you're missing GPS and other gear could it be that Ryan Air lost or created other issues regarding your usual gear?

Please explain to me the difference between "optimal performance," and "good scores." More to the point, explain to me why I should give a damn about the former if I can achieve the latter with supposedly "sub-optimal performance?"
Why did every iron come up short…..sub optimal performance, irons launched too high and spin was too high, just one example 👍 hope that helps

It’s a bit of a confused video but I’d say you’re of a height, build and swing speed that doesn’t necessarily require custom fitting in order to play good golf. I think the more someone reaches the extremes of height and swing speed the more important custom fitting is.
I’d strongly disagree, yes you can play golf with hickory clubs if you choose but they will never perform as well as custom fit clubs that are built with your swing attributes, that includes swing speed whether it be slow or fast, how you deliver the club which includes many variables
@@TheAverageGolfer Fair enough although “strongly” disagree might be a bit much given the video - which is in line with the experiences of my average height, average swing speed mates. I’m 6’4” with a relatively slow swing speed and I definitely benefited from custom fitting whereas they’ve all concluded it was unnecessary for them.
The swing change looks like .....at the start of the backswing you are activating your wrists by pushing down on the handle of the club with your left palm and pulling up with your two middle fingers of your right hand.

Yes I noticed your swing change..you;re welcome! Now a bit longer backswing without the left elbow or wrists breaking down and you will be good to go.. You can just send me a new set of those fancy PXG clubs and we will be all square. I;m still swinging a 910d3 driver and Exotics cb1 3 wood circa 2010...It's the archer not the arrows. Just swing something reasonable and learn how to use it better.

You have an odd little hesitation on your backswing but you have also lost the over the top move. Is that due to a tempo change or focusing more on swinging inside?

You performed well on challenging courses. Learn the clubs, as they did their job. Not buying the whole “performance” rabble. Highly doubt you would have done better with your set. Hitch in your backswing is the new thing you’re doing. Many up and downs/one putts. Take it easy on the fat girl(putter) that smiles back at you.
In Kentucky, USA we say you have a little hitch in your giddy-up on your backswing!
