As an 83 year old who remembers playing with balata balls and persimmon head woods, I have to chuckle at the new fad for mini drivers. They’re really just what were 2 woods in our old sets, albeit benefitting from technology that didn’t exist 50 years ago. But mini driver sounds sexier and more powerful than 2 wood. And doubtless more forgiving than a strong 3 wood.
Looove my Ping G410 7W. Got it off my Dad because he wasn't into it, and it just worked for me straight away. Has replaced my 4 Hybrid and 4 Iron. Got it lofted down to 20.5, and it covers a lot of bases for me. Highly recommend trying one.
Great points -- appreciate it! I was particularly tickled by inclusion of the 7 wood. I put one in my bag about 8 years ago and never looked back (repleaced some long irons I never carry anymore).
A few months ago, I played Cleveland launcher HB turbo clubs and couldn't believe that i could hit a 4 iron beautifully again! Put a 4, 5 & 6 in my bag and I'm delighted. Long, high and straight. So, Andy - you are spot on with this one. (PS opinion seems to be that this older iteration is better than the current model). Great video, thank you
I use the 7 iron of the HB as a gap between my usual 7 iron and the 9 wood I have. My irons are older and the lofts are weaker. I tried for weeks to hit the 6 iron of my set but found the HB turbo 7 to be the same loft and much easier and consistent
Hello Andy , thank you very much for producing this video even in the rain. I heard what you said but it is up to each player to follow every trend. Some people out there are no more able to hit an iron in a proper way. They walk around with these hybrids and wonder how to approach the green. Glad I play all irons well and don’t have this issue. 😊😊😊
Brilliant information. I think almost all of the points you've made are things I am looking to do over the coming months or have already benefitted from. I recommend the 13 degree TM mini driver, moved to a Ping 5 wood, use hybrids up to 27 degrees and want to try the jumbo grips. Just need to try the new putters. Thank you.
Andy I am on my third season with the Jumbomax Ultralight grips. I have on all clubs all the way to my 58 degree wedge. You have to go all in these you can’t mix grips and have true success. It doesn’t take long to get used to them. These help me keep a lighter grip, which helps my speed. I would never go back. I have the Medium size.
@danielgreene6480 , historically we expect the fat grip to send the ball more right, as the player has a more difficult time rotating the fat grips. But I was looking for some recent opinions as the 60 years worth of information I am aware of seems to be changing somehow... Thx
my mate has a bigger grip on his driver. Not a jumbo but definitely bigger than the usual, and I have used putters with a jumbo/bigger grip. I think they are absolutely a game changer. Idk if i would put them across my bag but I would definitely consider putting them in my putter and driver.
The larger grip on my putter has been a game changer for me, it quieted my hands a lot. My driver grip has a few extra layers of tape so it's slightly thicker and I like that feel a lot as well. Rest of the clubs are normal sized. I agree with your line of thinking.
Great run down of these trends Andy. I have added a 7 wood to the back at the end of last year and find it a great club to use as well as suing Callaway cb wedges with a full face both of which came to be after watching you demo and discuss them. They have made the game a bit easier by times for sure.
The addition of adding a 7 wood and a 9 wood into my rotation of clubs gives me more versatility depending on the course that I am playing vs. equivalent hybrids. Especially on the courses where the rough is deeper.
I was on the verge of a mini driver then I tried the G430 max 10k and no longer needed the mini driver, dont use a 3w as my 5w is more accurate and pretty much as long. Dont have a gap in distance for a 7w, have 2 hybrids that go well for me. I need to upgrade wedges, but cant see the point at this time of year as greens are getting softer and the summer run is dissapearing. Possibly heading towards the Opus wedges but will see.......
Excellent review of trends - all of which I already have or am considering. I suppose my opinion that this is an excellent video exists because the video confirms my own thinking. Apart from that I also admire the video capture and editing on your channel - great asset.
I use mid-sized grips Andy and love them, one thing I will say is just pay attention to the swing weight of clubs if changing the grips putting heavy grips on can change the swing weight by 2 to 3 swing weights!
The Jumbo golf grips are interesting. Would be very interested in a video that takes a deep dive into jumbo v normal grips pretty much throughout the bag testing identically set up clubs whose only difference is the grip.
Switching to jumbomax grips has dropped my HDCP 6 strokes this season. I have never had better control and my distance improved 15 yds on driver and between 7 - 10 with my irons. You won't regret it. Test one on your driver. Get the correct size. It's easy on their website. Good luck.
As a somewhat long hitter, people are sleeping on lofted fairway woods. More forgiving and a better descent angle than a similarly lofted hybrid. Now, if you are in the UK or west Texas, sure... Stick with the hybrids.
3d printed irons are going to be a thing FOR SURE, maybe not next year but in the next 5 they will be prolific across many big brands. Also +1 for lie angle balanced putters, probably the biggest game changer for me since the Odyssey two ball.
The Mini-Driver will evolve to be very much like The Callaway Great Big Bertha with the warbird soul. 20 years prior it was "The Ginty".. It's on a 20-25 year cycle
Agree with everything you've said, Andy. Jumbo grips is my next stop. Perhaps not jumbo, Jumbo😂 but medium or large jumbo. My 5h was difficult to control, so i changed clubs. I'm hitting the new one, so much better, but I'm now wondering if it's due to a naturally thicker grip.
I can’t recommend the mini driver enough. It is an awesome club that gives me a lot of confidence. It is really fun to hit off the tee. It is my second option on a tee shot if the driver isn’t working that day.
Could this benefit also come from knowing the head is smaller and makes us swing a bit better because of that? Man I wish I had kept my Taylormade 300 and put a modern shaft in it just to see how good it was.
I found an older mallet putter with an eighty degree lie angle. I am an amateur club builder so I lengthened the shaft and made a long putter. This made it hard to control and gave me a bad case of the yips. About that time Bryson started using the putter he holds against his forearm. So I shortened the shaft and regripped it. The only difference is I hold it against my right forearm and grip the left hand at the top of the grip. The face stays square through the swing making it deadly accurate left and right. All I have to do is hone in the distance and that will come with use. My question is does gripping the top of the shaft and holding it against my forearm instead of gripping it down with my other hand make it illegal?
I've been playing the TM Mini since it was first introduced in the SLDR configuration. I upgraded to the Original, the 300, and then the TM BRNR. I haven't carried a 3-wood since. Because the USGA outlawed using a stand-up putter (like my Bloodline) beginning in 2025, I've been forced to switch to a more conventional putter. I chose the PXG Allen because of its zero-torque design.
@@TheAverageGolfer It's on order. It takes about a week to receive it. However, I had it fit at PXG, so I got a chance to get the weights right (for me) and try it out. It's deadly accurate, though. You refrain from manipulating the face during the swing. It goes straight from almost anywhere on the face.
It seems a “no-brainer” to me why club manufacturers don’t offer more full faced grove (FFG) wedges. I game Cleveland wedges (46, 50, 56, 60). A mix of Zipcore RTX6, CBX Full-Face 2 and Zipcore CBX4. Both the CBX2 and CBX4 come with FFG face, but both of my RTX6s have a traditional face. Although the RTX6 have additional milling on the face out to the extremities of the face. I would be more than happy to have all my wedges with FFG faces. However, Cleveland don’t manufacture the loft and bounce that I want in the product range of clubs they offer with FFG

What I did just get is a 24 degree 9 wood, for which I plunked down the princely sum of $36 Yankee dollars ($34.99 + $5 grip upgrade and 10% off sale). It is a clone club from DTC Diamond Tour Golf (owned by the Sub 70 people). Mine is supposed to be based on a Ping G400. So far, the thing hits great; kinda makes me giggle. @BillyDenton-nx3oy it's harder to hook the ball, usually your grip will be a little more neutral to weak. That's probably why.

I have to ask! What is the difference between the mini driver and the 3 wood?
