I met him at Celebration one year, I wondered why his line wasn't moving. Then I got to the end of it and realized it was because he was stopping to talk to EVERYONE in the line. It was money well spent in my book.

His point in the beginning is huge. A lot of people got so into the OG Star Wars because it didn’t treat you like a viewer seeking information. It dropped you in an established universe and left you to piece it together.
That’s a problem in a lot of entertainment now honestly
And that he made an entire universe feel lived in (and now we've seen that) when some directors/producers/ set designers fail to make even fictional towns seem real
I remember the way he described it was "a fairy tale in space" because nothing really existed that was comparable to what he wanted to do. So you get "once upon a time" (A long time ago), you have the monomyth, magic etc. And the thing about fairy tales is that they don't need to make sense. No one questions why there's a gingerbread house in the middle of the forest, there just is. That framing allowed him a tremendous amount of freedom.

Sam Witwer is the rarest breed: The actor/voice actor who so love the material they're working with, and match the passion of the fandom, that they both vocalise and express their appreciation as much as possible. It's so nice to see, compared to the regular, obligatory 'I just do this for the paycheck' actors who take an active distance from caring about the material, particularly if it's 'nerdy'.
Also makes some pretty killer music too 😁

that's the difference between mocking and impressions. mocking requires no respect for the other person and is almost always so over the top that only certain things can be used to identified who's being mocked. impressions like this one always have a gargantuan amount of respect for whose being impersonated and sounds near-perfect. sam is absolutely the man, and then some. if we never get a canonical adaptation for the Starkiller, i demand sam gets to make his own film/ series.

Sam literally made the Force Unleashed for me. He also nailed Darth Maul in Clone Wars. Seeing him do this kind of speaking engagement is music to my eyes/ears.
Tried playing it REALLY want to play it got both 1 and 2 and Basically... as I have a controller on my PC the keyboard controls dont work and it really doesn't like proper movement/camera motion so I'm just "PLEASE LET ME PLAY AS DARTH SAMWITWER"
@@AlMcpherson79 even tho both version are trash in PC the second one works SLIGHTLY better so my recomendation would be, play the first one in a PSP emulator (they work fine on PC) and the second one with a fix or mod for controllers and some corrections. There was a pack of mods that fixed a lot of problems for them and that's how I played them once my PSP got damaged beyond repair and got a decent (nothing to extravagant) PC.

Sam nailed just how these studios think in regards to sequels. "Yeah the first one made so much money, let's do it again but MORE! Let's have more Jawas, more Tattoine, more death stars!" - basically just more of the same. George did the opposite in regards to Empire, he didn't repeat the first in anyway. He made a darker story that goes in a completely different direction, with Luke separated from the others, a focus on more chases in space, different locations never seen before, and of course the big revelations at the end. This is why a creative auteur who has control over his property with no studio interference can work wonders.

@@Freefall984 Disney bought it and made every classic mistake a corporation does over an intellectual proerty. That's because they're in it to make money, not to genuinely want to push boundaries in cinematic storytelling.
Lucas was only successful because he had a great team. People disregard everyone else who made Star Wars great, and as soon as Lucas lost his team he went stale. Very talented man, but forgetting the team is what lead to a lotta problems
While i agree with your sentiment it cannot go unsaid that the first cut Lucas had of a new hope was simply…. Crap!!! It felt too much and confusing. That movie was saved in editing and turned into what it became.
He had the freedom to go in a new direction based on his negotiations and Empire was actually not loved when it came out cuz it was so different… today its easily recognized as the best in all the series. My fav is return of the Jedi.
So executive and producer interference while costly at time can be great and lead to great things. I think the movie that best exemplifies it is Ford v Ferrari. Shelby working as producer of vehicle w a artistic love but know how got the artist what he needed but also got him to play nice enough to get the result they worked tirelessly for.
@@derekskelton4187 A New hope had to be wrangled into position with his teams as he got overexcited in places, then Empire had to be wrangled with people like Gary Kurtz fighting with Lucas to keep the ship straight and leaving Lucas to do Return of the Jedi on his own almost. We then hit the prequels were people said "yes George, Sounds great George" atleast with Phantom Menace, between Jedi and Phantom Menace we saw too much play into kids and merchandising (despite being a kid watching these, Ewoks and Jar Jar....did succeed on me not as an adult) so after being taught a lesson on reception, Ep II and III got into a better place.
As you said it needed the others in the productions to keep Lucas focused and help him get the best out of Star Wars than getting unfocused and losing his audience is nearly did during the prequel sand has done since his pass over of copyrights to Disney.

A lot of movies use his company he created Industrial Light and Magic (the shirt Sam is wearing btw) for CGI and I believe sound effects at Skywalker Ranch.
You should really look into it, the effect Star Wars has had on movies is huge.

The reverence you can hear from him, as he talks about George Lucas, the prequels and Star Wars as a whole is inspirational. Not only does he get to be a part of the Universe, but you can hear he understands the fundamentals of it's storytelling and has such a respect for what it's done for Art, Film and Millions of us across the world. Sam Witwer is a legend, and I will happily support him in every piece of media he is attached to.

GL packed the suit case that is Episode IV....he packed it SO well that we're still unpacking it today, and will be for decades.

Man I loved this. I've been binging all the interviews, podcasts, comicons and what not of Star Wars and LOTR for the past 2 weeks and I can now appreciate them so much more than before for all that I've learnt about the people behind it!
I had no idea Lucas financed it all himself and that he developed all the audio and digitals? Wow! Very respectable to say the least. Thank you for sharing this.
Lucas explained it long ago, he wanted to set up a story, a tale to tell. For Empire, Lucas wanted to start the heroes of the story in an impossible situation to convey hopelessness. While he was also a micromanager and had thought the film was garbage because he didn't direct and it was mostly overseas (UK) his Wife again rescued the film. She edited All 3 Star Wars and is an unsung hero in making these films amazing. She knew what George wanted to achieve and went to work supporting his vision.
Noooo, didn't you hear him? All of this amazingness, from the editing, to the writing, to the software other people engineered... it all fell fully formed out of the genius that is Lucas.

Both in his overview of Lucas' accomplishments or should we say 'BOSS MOVES' and the initial reaction to the prequels as OG Star Wars fans with decades of prequel imagination in our minds. We too looked forward to these movies since they were a whisper of a rumour and were disappointed at the result...until we figured out with the help of Filoni the story that Lucas' was actually telling at a deeper level and respect that he didn't rehash everything. Soi good to hear someone talk about how they LOVE Star Wars for a change ;)

I became a fan of Lucas after going to the drive in theatre with my parents to watch American Graffiti. As a kid I didn't know who he was, but me and my brothers loved the film. Star Wars hit me harder than that and I didn't think it was possible. BTW, HUGE fan of Sam Witmer. He reminds me of a guy I would crack open some beers and sit around a camp fire just to BS. Amazing guy and even better voice actor. Loved his work in Callisto Protocol as well.

That's weird... I'm 44 and I also dreamed about the prequels and fantasized about them ( I, II and III) and the weird thing is... They're EXACTLY and better than I imagined them. I'm one of the 3 people who actually love those movies.
You are not alone. They are fantastic films, there is so much to love and admire in them. The story is literally one for the ages: a modern myth, a Greek tragedy in sci-fi veneer. The characters, the settings, the action, the conflict, the political backdrop, the emotional turmoil; George crafted every element with immense care and wove them all into a beautiful tapestry, the likes of which we will *never* see again. He financed those films himself, he made them exactly according to his vision, he found the best artists and craftsmen who all got to shine-every prop, every painting, every costume, every effect is a work of passion, of pride, of fantasy turned reality, of imagination refined. The sheer quantity of content to engage with in the Prequels is staggering. You can watch them forever and always find new things to marvel at.
Mate you're one of many people who love the prequels, the prequels haters are very few but very loud, these movies are a treasure and it's a shame they got a bad reputation when they are so incredible. Personally I like them so much more than the original trilogy
What sort of ideas were you expecting when you thought of how the prequels should be? It's honestly really fascinating how people can just think of something and they get proven right. I mean, I did predict Hux's betrayal in The Rise of Skywalker and Luke showing up in The Mandalorian, but, of course, I wasn't expecting how it would happen.

@@slimdankbeams8165 Me too. Everything about the prequels is more interesting than the original trilogy: the worldbuilding, the plot, the characters, the set designs, the costumes, everything. And there is nothing else out there that resembles them. They're almost a genre unto themselves. It's magnificent.
The one thing I really admire about the original Star Wars trillogy is how it genuinely feels like the middle of a story.
It is so much more intriguing that way. I wish more films and games were like this.

very insightful from sam witwer. not to discredit george, but i wouldn’t say all computer digital editing came from him. he did help influence, it but it took a whole bunch of people to change the industries and how we all do our workflows. one example is john knoll, who did the first adobe photoshop (his name is on the early startup splashscreen), and did pirates of the caribbean, and continues to this day in movie vfx. there are legends in the industries. george worked with talented people. he was a visionary but it took a team to go with it.
Thank you for voicing this, Sam. This is why I will forever be a supporter of the "fan theory" that Jarjar was a Sith lord in disguise the whole time. You go back to the making-of documentary about Ep 1, and George flat out says it. Go back and research the movie, pay close attention, and you can see it. Ahmed Best did a fantastic job in his performance, and ILM did a fantastic job bringing George's vision to life. I really wish George hadn't taken the fan backlash at the time so to heart, and had followed through on his original plan and vision for Ep 2 and 3.

It IS a fan theory because nobody has ever said it is accurate in all the years since the movies were made. It was 23 years. Lucas has revealed so many other things; that Anakin wasn't intended to be Darth Vader... that Yoda was never originally part of the plan... Leia was not the 'another' referred to in Empire...
And yet he has never ever once confirmed that Jar Jar was a Sith Lord. He said he was 'key' and, yes, he was - he was key to the audience identification of Phantom Menace (remember, Lucas writes the movies from one or two character's perspective - Jar Jar is Phantom's). Additionally Jar Jar is key to the empire being created... no manipulated Gungan, no power for Sidious. Jar Jar is key in a lot of things.
But something nobody - Lucas, Ahmed Best, Rick McCallum, Ben Burtt, any of the producers, creators, actors or anybody - has even confirmed, even when asked, is that Jar Jar is a Sith.
Lucas would expose even things which contradict his claims that he always had a plan but won't reveal the hidden story of a character he will never write or direct for again? No. Just, no. As the Doctor once said "Heh. Humans. Always looking for patterns in things that aren't there."
Lucas is all the things Sam Witwer said he is. He also changed his plans as he went through and although he did have, what he himself calls 'beats' planned out, he has always been open and honest about these beats. If Jar Jar had been a Sith, by now, we'd know. It fits *nowhere*. With nothing. Two Sith there are. Not three. Sidious is ruling in RotJ, not Jar Jar.
I’m thankful and grateful that we have people like him, and Dave Filoni, and Jon Favreau. It’s people like them that are moving Star Wars forward in a great, creative fashion.
Sam talks about how moving in a new direction is the way to evolve, which is why the sequel trilogy failed. It’s beat-for-beat the original trilogy. In episode VII, you have an orphan on tatooine becoming a part of a rebellion, and the megastructure that is capable of destroying a planet (in this case it can destroy a solar system.) In episode VIII, you have the Jedi training while the rebels are fleeing the oppressive force, and a big twist at the end. In episode IX, you have this huge, climactic battle as a background for a smaller, but very significant battle.
Episode VII and VIII may have been good, but it doesn’t excuse the blatant nostalgia banking they did.
Episode 8 was not good. None of them were. Disney took too many creative liberties with those films. Episode 7 was JJ ignoring the prequels, episode 8 was Rian telling JJ to fuck off while simultaneously taking the story in a completely opposite direction, and episode 9 was JJ trying to course correct Rian's disaster. Not to mention the absolutely ridiculous premise behind 9. "Somehow, Palpatine returned."
Stupid movies. They should have used George's story. I know they infused a lot of his ideas but it was Frankensteined into what we ended up with. Ridiculous. Fuck Disney.

Oooooooh that's the feeling of myself being humbled.
I'm not gonna say I was wrong about the way I feel about the prequels, but listening to Sam so articulately break down the reason for his passion...I realize I was entirely too quick to judge without considering so many other factors. There's nothing wrong about judging a film on its own merits, certainly. But, for me personally, these kinds of backstories explaining the how and why behind the process make a big impact on my ability to enjoy a film I might otherwise not.

My dad was part of the team contracted to install all the new computer tech for ESB. He was astonished by the forward-thinking and innovative approach Lucas took to the entire process. I grew up hearing this exact diatribe.😅
A true fan right there, he could see through the initial.... confusion of the prequels and see what George was saying. I grew up with my dad praising these movies, and I watched them. And it was a super special moment, when he could take me, at four years old, to see Phantom menace and share this franchise with me in real time. George may not have been perfect, but when he struck gold, he struck hard.

To say Lucas created and pioneered technology is true, from a certain point of view. What he did do was use his talent and skills to allow you to create and pioneer your own view. Love Lucas.
Yeah, and he also made it possible for movie studios to slash FX budgets and make crappy digital effects that ruin movies.
@@thehmc "slash FX budgets" Huh? GFX is still one of the most expensive parts of movie making, not counting "marketing". You notice the "crappy digital effects" but you don't notice the countless FX that is happening in almost every shot in every film. Bad art design and choices stands on its own, it isn't the fault of the tools. It's under the same vein as how certain games still look just as appealing as when they released 10-20+ years ago and others look dated af a year after launch. It all comes down to the talent of the person using the tools.

I feel like Sam should be working with Dave Filoni, he has the same mindset, the same love for Star Wars and the same respect for George Lucas' vision. I bet he'd make a fantastic director one day just because of how keen he is to study and learn about how great minds like George Lucas approach film making.
Sam Witwer is a Star Wars treasure. I would love to meet him one day. He seems so genuine. My first intro to him was Force Unleashed, but he is so many characters by now, it's almost impossible to not love a character he's voiced somewhere.
