Great point about the other bears dancing, I do not think that he was alone. His bees were also a wonder, being somewhat tamed by him but much larger than other honeybees.

    Another great video! Beorn and his descendants are definitely enigmatic and seem somewhat out of place in Tolkien’s legendarium compared to his later works, similar to Tom Bombadil and the stone giants. Then again the Druedain were another primitive race of men who also possessed mystical powers as exemplified by the story of the Faithful Stone. One theory I have heard is that these races of men were given strange powers by Yavanna to serve as guardians of nature similar to the Ents, and this would explain why they both lived close to nature and why Beorn was a vegetarian and great protector of his animals. Perhaps the reason his descendants ultimately lost the ability to shape shift into bears was because they ceased to be vegetarians and guardians of nature.

  • @justinah7400
    @justinah7400 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    A his ability came from a Maiar ancestor was the lover of one of the men of the first age, The Edain. Just like Melian had a child with Thingol, Luthien. Luthien inherited special abilities from her mother. In Beorn's bloodline the traits of his Maiar ancestor continued to pass down each generation.

  • @spookyshadowhawk6776

    The LOTR version of the Berserkers, as no other race has this ability, it seems to come from something older and more powerful than a mere Spell, which other's would know. Good to see you back again!

    • @MrBigCookieCrumble
      @MrBigCookieCrumble 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Agreed, it seems to go deeper than "simple magic", elves were magical by their nature and the Noldor and their descendants were capable of great feats even in Bilbo's time, but there are no examples of elves being able to shapeshift that i know of, even dwarves had access to a kind of magic with their runes, but again no shapeshifting. The only examples other than the Beornings are Valar and Maiar (Sauron shapeshifts into different beasts and animals in the Silmarillion for example). I wonder if one of the Edain after the time of the Silmarillion married a maiar, or had a relationship with one, like that elven king in Doriath? Another, perhaps more likely, thing would be that the "founder" of the Beorning line of people had performed some great feats of valour and/or good and kind deads during the first age, and was given it by the valar for this (just like the numenorians!) but in a different way, given the technique and ability to shapeshift as a reward. It always felt odd to me that of all the people's that were grouped under the name "Edain", who fought for the good guys for so long, ONLY the numenorians were granted such fantastic awards for their deeds, but.. perhaps they WERENT the only group to be rewarded, but that all the Edain were rewarded in different ways depending what fit their deeds and people.

The party where they danced till dawn. I bet you that was all the Bears in the World..... This dudes children were just bears that learned to be Men... idk made more sense to start with. Perhaps Beorn's knowledge of Radagast is a clue as to his shape shifting ability. Radagast could have given him that ability or maybe Radagast possessed that ability himself and was able to share it with Beorn. Sauron was lord of the werewolves and he took their form at least once.

    Great video as usual! I like Beorn and his ability to shapeshift, I have mostly seen it as a part of his being, like its something he simply can do since he seems as at ease to be a bear as a human. But if you look at one of Tolkiens mayor inspirations the norse sagas there are stories there of people being able to either shapeshift into bears or while sleeping apearing at another place in the form of a bear and that was mostly linked with some kind of magic also there are stories in scandinavia about people changing into bears and attacking their own families since they didnt have any real control over themselfs in bearform...all these elements seem to blend into Beorn that is truly one of the faschenatings characters of middle-earth. I would like to say that i was exited when I heard Persbrandt was set to play Beorn since he is a great actour and has a natural scruffyness about him ..being loud, rude but yet heartfull in many intervies i seen him do...but as usual Peter Jaksson managed to screw that up...he looks like a freaking giant hedgehog and with the lines and story he is given...not much good could have come out of it...he did the best of it...but its still just a mess.

    I know it's not the best theory, but it's fun to think that Rhadaghast enchanted Beorn's forefathers or even sired a child with a local woman. Or perhaps it was more like (Game of Thrones reference coming) Thormund's night with a she-bear 🤣 Probably it would not fit the lore well but a Rhadaghast who is able to shapeshift into animals seems like an interesting twist to his meek character.

    I really wish they would've shown Beorns fight in the battle of the 5 armys that would've been quite the sight seeing him shred through essentially hulking out getting angrier, bigger, stronger and tougher if ol bear dude single handedly turned the tide it really must've been quite something to witness.

    Given that the Rohirrim came from this area of Rhovannion, and how the Rohirric language works, perhaps the name Beorn and Beornings is rather pronounced as B-yor-n and B-yor-nings due to E and O making a ‘yor’ sounds when together, similar to Rohirric. As Eorling would be pronounced as Yor-ling due to the absence of the accented É. If the E is accented then the the vowels are pronounced separately. Much similar to Éorlingas. I’m not too sure if this is entirely correct but I like to think it is. Either way, you’re the lore expert and this was another great video (as always).

    I understand the approach that you’re trying to take with explaining Beorn’s power of shapeshifting, but Tolkien already explained that it was a trait he shares with the rest of his species: The Skin-Changers.

    So interesting! Is there anything known about Beorn's partner, like if she was human, where she came from and all that? There's lots of knowledge about his sons/descendants, but with all the stories about his solitary lifestyle (and the fact that he's a part-time bear haha), it's very hard to imagine him founding a family and all that!

      In the book of Fellowship of the Ring, they mention that Beorn had kids who now take care of his land. Apparently, he married a woman of men so his kids are half-shape shifters and half-human :)

    I never thought it was that Beorn used magic to change, I always believed that either Beorn or one of his ancestors was put under some spell from someone else and it just passed down with each generation.

    He looks like he belongs in a Narnia movie in the movies. Absolutely hated his portrayal in all honesty. He looks so goofy and cartoonish and it just doesn't do his character justice.
    He had so little screen time too, yet they managed to add in all of the necromancer backstory and other random things.
    In typing this I realize it was an adaptation, probably shifted towards another audience, perhaps younger, so it's great another generation will see the beauty of The Hobbit and LOTR lore at least.

    I have always wished that Tolkien would have had Beorn appear at the end of LOTR as the hobbits were going home west of the mountains, and that they all went to the pool of the Watcher in the Water, where as a bear he destroyed the dam and killed the Watcher. Now that would have given wonderful satisfaction.
