  • Balin’s expedition into Moria is one of the sadder, more horrific tales that takes place in Middle-Earth. This Dwarven Colony in Khazad-Dum would have some success at the start, though fate was cruel to them and they eventually experienced a terrible end, locked in the chamber of Mazarbul. What Happened to this expedition? What successes did they have? And was there any way for them to avoid their horrific end?
    These questions and more as we explore one of the many mysteries in the Lord of the Rings.

      Even more interesting and sorrowful when you realize that those words were written by Ori. He was the dwarf that had been shot by an orc arrow and who died, sitting by the tomb of Balin. His skeleton was still holding the book. Ori had been the record keeper and kept them right to his final moments. Gandalf took it out of his hands and read his final words. I can only imagine how he must have felt remembering Ori from when they were on the quest to reclaim Erabor. Blows my mind. That must have been really sad. Also so sad for Gimli to know that Oin had been killed by the Watcher in the Water. That was his uncle. The brother of Gloin. So much sadness in this part of the story that we dont think of when reading/watching Fellowship of the Ring. Great video!

      Loved him in the film, though his implied age made him seem almost like a father figure to Thorin, when in fact Thorin was seventeen years older than Balin. I'm re-reading the books again, and I do believe Balin did come and visit Bilbo at least once, accompanied by Gandalf. I also found it strange that in the LOTR films, Bilbo tells Frodo he meant to return to Erebor but that old age caught up to him. Granted, the films cut out the seventeen year interlude between Bilbo's birthday party and the start of Frodo's quest. However, in the books, Bilbo did in fact return to Erebor, and only later settled in Rivendell. I can only imagine he was crushed to learn what happened to his friends in Moria. 😥

      Balin was the kindest dwarf to befriend Bilbo and admired the hobbit for his new found courage during their adventures together. He'd already seen so many of his loved ones die, most especially Thorin - the one he'd survived Smaug's attack with years and years before, and then reclaimed the Lonely Mountain for....I always imagined that he couldn't have felt content or happy being in an Erebor that was not ruled by that dear friend and member of his kin. So it's easy to imagine that even as an old dwarf, he was restless and needed to just........move. Do something. One last hurrah for something that felt worthy.

      probably because Moria being overrun, and both gates being taken, meant that no one could send a message out to say 'help, we're being overrrun' and it wasn't uncommon for dwarves to not get involved with each other unless they are directly asked to. Erebor and the Iron Hills are a good bit away from Moria. so they probably followed a 'no news is good news' policy. they weren'tr calling for aid, any info they had previous was probably good, and no one would consider the idea that a hero of the battle of five armies, or one of the company that helped destroy Smaug would fail at reclaiming Moria from a bunch of rabble orcs.

    I remember reading The Hobbit as a child, and then again during an unpleasant time at the hospital a few years later. Of course I watched The Lord of the Rings trilogy (who hasn't) but I never read all of it.
    At this point Tolkien has become part of our culture and even people, who have never read anything he wrote, or just casually read a little, like I did, have a general idea what a Hobbit is, that elves and dwarfes hate each other...Many ideas that pop up in pretty much every fantasy world today that originated from Tolkien.
    I enjoyed the stories and I knew that he created a vast world, but only after watching your videos I found out how vast it actually is.
    It's like every character that is mentioned in passing in any of his books has a complete backstory that could fill a book of it's own. I'm truly amazed at how many things I didn't know. And yet I never felt I was missing something, I still enjoyed the stories. It's more like "Here's all this backstory. You don't need it, but it's here if you want it."
    I really enjoy listening to your videos and learning about all these things I never knew about. Your knowledge if the lore is amazing and the way you talk about it just leaves me wanting to know more.

What i love about your videos is that you meticulously piece together his works to create a more complete picture, and then offer us fills for those gaps yourself.

    I wish they had hired Peter Dinklage for the "Hobbit" trilogy. I think he would have made a great contribution. I think it was rash of the dwarves to try to return with so few. Balin wasn't one of the more martial dwarves of "Thorin's Company." I don't see why he apparently wasn't satisfied with Erebor returned. That was a huge victory for his people and he was not young when they reclaimed it. Being of a more peaceful nature, I don't see why he would want to go on a personal mission that even Dain Ironfoot was doubtful could be achieved. ****On a side not, it states very clearly in "The Hobbit" that the River Running issued forth from the front gate of the Lonely Mountain. "The River Running was a 600-Númenórean miles long river that poured out of the Front Gate of the Lonely Mountain, descended over two falls and swirled around Dale." He was 7 at the time Smaug moved in (2770) and 178 at the retaking of Lonely Mountain in 2941. That is middle age for dwarves since they can reach 250. He left for Moria in 2989 at the age of 226 (kind of old for questing) and so he lived there 48yrs under Dain's rule. I just wonder what the catalyst for leaving was.

    • @Dadecorban
      @Dadecorban 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      There is no evidence really in any of Tolkien's writings (that I'm aware of) that Melkor or Sauron was concerned with using gold or any other type of transferable wealth to assist in the control of men. Sauron did not need to bribe men; he was a master of controlling the minds of men from afar, of poisoning the minds of leaders, and spreading the worship of Melkor and himself as religion capable of controlling men in a far more reliable way.

    • @sualtam9509
      @sualtam9509 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@Dadecorban There is the general motive in all of Tolkien's writing, that gold or riches in general corrupt.
      Although it is not explicitly stated, we can assume that Sauron used gold as a mean to corrupt.
      After all how do you think came control the minds of men in the first place? The catalyst was man's lust for power. Gold can buy power. It can decide the fate of war and turn family against each other.

    • @Dadecorban
      @Dadecorban 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@sualtam9509 Yes, there is that underlying concept of riches corrupting. Melkor exploits it directly by creating a race giant serpents that like nothing more in life than finding the stores of human wealth (the centers of dwarven society primarily, but also Elves in the first age) and sitting on them forever. It's a great way to control such a powerful creature for your own ends indirectly. Give it a life cycle that coincides with your intent.
      Sauron has the ability to project his will across large distances and impose that will on the weak minded (men) or when lacks a physical body, he can move through a land at will and set his magic and malice upon it towards that same end. He does not require gold to do this. That being said, just because Tolkien never once writes a single line about Sauron (or Melkor) directing looted gold or other wealth (save for rings of power or other magical heirlooms) to be returned to Mordor let alone mentioning its intended use or sending his agents across Middle Earth to seize or negotiate for hoarded dragon wealth, or giving explicit orders that the wealth of sacked cities to be sent back to him doesn't mean that wasn't the case (or that I haven't missed a line somewhere)
      However it does indicate that it wasn't a very high priority for Sauron as we much evidence for other activities that we know were high priority. (ring making, ring retrieval, corrupting the Numenorians without a single coin exchanged)
      Additionally there is no mention of Mordor being a natural source of gold nor Sauron's minions conducting rare metal mining. He doesn't have a natural source of it, and his kingdom has been destroyed several times and likely looted each time; thus when he returns during the third age it's likely his gold supply is down to 0 anyway and not a significant factor. Additionally Moria hasn't even been effectively looted as Balin's company are finding valuable shit laying around (somehow). It's likely the Mercenaries from Umbar were operating on the implied promise of profit as they were tasked with raiding and harrying the coast of Gondor (which is what they are inclined to do anyway, and didn't need to be directly paid to do it)
      Sauron also had a penchant for corrupting leaders of men (not with gold) with promises, deceit, Trojan gifts (rings), and madness. It's these leaders of men in the east that already have the wealth in the east in the first place. Gold may well be one of their means for maintaining power, providing supplies for Sauron, and projecting their own military power, but it didn't require Sauron making a single currency transaction. Additionally, the promise of wealth from sacked cities was a medieval standard and probably another feature of the feudal/tribal contract that motivated men in the east to go west and fight.
      In summary, there's zero evidence for Sauron giving a single gold coin to anyone or requesting that a single gold coin be taken to Mordor. It may have happened, but was not required and not plentifully available to him.

      Well if they managed to deal with the Balrog somehow, I imagine they'd have sent reinforcements to Erebor when it was besieged during the War of the Ring. Gandalf also probably would never become 'the White', so I guess it's for the best that they failed!

    It's pretty ironic that the dwarves gain supeficial confidence from the slaying of Smaug by Bard, a human and at the cost of causing countless death of innocent lives especially the residents of Lake Town. There is nothing to gain by causing misery to others by letting a beast run amok and gaining credits on the slain beast by a human. Of all dwarf leaders, I thought Balin was the wiser than Thorin and Dain but like in every kingdoms, like kings, like lords. At least, dwarves of Warhammer had more honour and valor than the ones in LOTR.

    Was indeed to soon. What they could possible achieve was be there for shortly period instead of try to establish Moria again. The dwarves didn't had the numbers or a security to stay there. That time was only a briefly pause between storms.
    But I didn't know Balin was killed by an orc arrow, instead of the Balrog itself. A lame death. =[

    Moria....one of the most faschinating places of middle earth. Exellent video as usual...it tells what we know. The questions i always asked me have been what kind of advice Dain gave to stop the expidition...i mean he basicly knew of the balrog...wouldnt he have told them...and if he did why did they go anyway?...Also its interesting to specualte if the orcs that came were called upon by the balrog or sent by Sauron...or orcs with their own agenda....can wonder if the orcs had some stronghold close by moria...the goblingate seems to far to frequently send down orcs to moria.

    Balin's company in Moria has always been one of my favourite parts of Tolkein's canon
    The efforts of the expedition, its early success, and ultimate defeat, have been a fascination of mine since I read this decades ago
    It was rash to try to retake Moria at that time, but it seems to have always been in the Dwarven minds to recover lost realms - their love of history and their ancestors create a drive for this and I've always believed that Balin (or another Dwarf) would be obliged to recover the mines (and dwarven treasure) as soon as they could
    Great update and love these on a Sunday night

    Hey Karl,
    - Frist of all thanks for makeing this 👍😉 always love your Lore explaining and entertainment from Lord of the Rings 😁🐉
    - I understand why Balin and his fellow dwarves after reconquer Erobor, that they also wanted
    Moria. (Rush decision or not I still understand it)
    - Moria was once there home... (All the dwarves we see from Hobbit had lost there home until the day of the battle of the Five Armies.)
    - Once home, country or kingdom it's a very big part of it's inhabitants identities. Once you will lose with out. I and think maney people can associate or relate to this. Example: ( After most of Europe had been conquered by the German in World war 2.)
