  • Beorn is a skin-changer we meet in The Hobbit, and his descendants, The Beornings, followed on after him. But who are these large men that could potentially transform into great bears?
Hopefully you enjoy finding out what we know in this video! :)
And do not forget, can we get this video to surpass 7500 likes?? (As well as leaving the comment of "Great Chief" too!)

Beorn is a corruption of the Scandinavian Bjorn, meaning bear. Hence the name for a character that could transform into said bear :)

All of it was taken from Scandinavian history and legend. They have cool sounding names. I was convinced all those black metal bands are just Tolkien nerds but they won't admit it. Turns out their language wasa wonderful and metal foundation for our dear JR.

What if beorn took the one ring, perhaps as a payment for Thorin's company's lodgings. Or perhaps feeling beorns Power it falls out of bilbos pocket as he sleeps and Beorn steals it.

I have often wondered if Tolkien had the legendary berserker in mind when he created Beorn.

      BERSERKER!!

    • @minnumseerrund
      @minnumseerrund 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I would say no.
While the sources are shaky and we dont really have much evidence that they were an actual thing, the /concept/ of the berserkers of Norse tradition are tied to the practice of shamanistic trance and the cult of Odin. In this way, they are more like a Norse parallel to mythic knightly orders like The Knights of the Round Table, ie a sort of spiritual warrior-society. See also the Jomsvikings and the Úlfhéðnar.
Furthermore, the defining trait of berserkers is (obviously) the act of going berserk (bersærkergang), ie going into a primal frenzy during battle. While berserkers are often depicted as donning wolves' or bear pelts (sometimes even eschewing all other clothes and armour in battle), this doesnt necessarily allude to shapeshifting as much as to channeling the nature of the beast, in a shamanistic sense - or maybe just 'hey, bears are cool, look I made a hat out of its head. I'm like a bear now lol.'
There is, however, a sort of overlap between the portrayal of individual mythical berserkers (such as Stærkodder/Starkad) and the Norse rendition of skinchangers (primarily werewolves and werebears) as tragic heroes/villians roaming the land or living on the edge of society. Several sagas and historical accounts also claim that the berserkers are immune to both iron and fire, a trait shared by skinchangers in some renditions.

There are several mythical tales surrounding humans who change into animals and specifically bears (voluntarily or otherwise).
The Saga of Hrólfr Kraki is one such tale, and it is known that Tolkien studied it and wrote about it, so chances are that was a stronger inspiration.
There's also the fact that one of Tolkiens favourite works of literature was "Beowulf", a work which most definetly inspired other parts of "The Hobbit" in major ways.
And the name "Beowulf" likely translates to "Bear".

The only ones with power to skin change MUST have descent from the Maiar... specifically Melian. Dior had two sons and a daughter... the sons were never found, though I suspect they were the fathers of the Beornings, perhaps raised by bears and married to women of the Haldor? Dior's daughter could skin change into a swan... so it stands to reason.... doesn't it?

She was granted that power, not born with it- And all Maiar can shapeshift, as their true forms aren't corporeal.

You forgot that in the Hobbit book when Gandalf introduced Thorin Oakenshield to Beorn, then Beorn replied, 'I don't need your service thank you, but I expect you need mine. I am not over fond of dwarves, but if it is true that you are Thorin (son of Thrain son of Thror) and that your companion is respectable, and you are enemies of goblins..... etc.
So Beorn at least knew who Thorin was.
